your takes are interesting, and personally when i heard people specifically bringing up that owning a squirrel was against the law, i never read it as 'in defense' of the state that killed the squirrel, but moreso to acknowledge that when you take in an animal-wild or domesticated-you accept some amount of responsibility with that, including their care, wellbeing, and adherence to law, right? so i always understood that to be moreso highlighting how the couple understood the risks and made a negotiation with the law to break it anyway (which i'm all for; jaywalking in bright daylight when there are no cars along is still an offense to the law, but reasonable people acknowledge it as the kind of negotiation people make with the law all the time for normal functioning) also, i super agree with you that police enforcement (including swat) is a deeply problematic institution that has far too much power, and is far too prone to abuse that power. however, the more vague sentiment that there are too many 'people in government' is a worrying thing to bring up alongside elon musk mentioning he would remove people from government. because it should be easy to understand that musk knows nothing of statecraft, and that his intention with firing people isn't to 'cut back on bloat' as much as it is to hamstring the government from being able to combat the sorts of policy he intends. i mean to me it's clear he's just kind of a random billionaire recovering from a humiliating purchase in twitter, and failing stocks in tesla. it's also quite important to recognize that 'overregulation' is not an area in which trump specifically would 'win,' when he's openly professed his interest in turning the military on his political adversaries and american citizens. to me, this represents a significantly greater overstep of the state than failing to install a toilet lol, so i don't find that as compelling a reason to be 'radicalized' as your cohost does here. similarly so with a state putting down a squirrel, when the project that's supposed to radicalize you into has expressed interest in far more deleterious actions being levied against their own constituency. seems to me if this squirrel story is in any way animating to you, it should be to avoid MAGA (and republican more broadly) doctrine, for what it represents. also! to speak on how the system is broken, you should make sure to inform people that voting locally is the best way to fix that; that the presidency is not the be-all end-all of the democratic system. things like engaging with local organizers to get electoral college reform & campaign finance reform is a necessary step which we can do right now, and also in the intervening years between presidencies.
That's true about the local elections. I think people are lashing out at life generally being over complicated and Trump promises to be some sort of panacea, which of course, he is not. He's great at branding though. None of this makes any actual sense. Please, don't take my cohost too seriously
Ok so...I'm at 2:22 and....I had to pause.....just to acknowledge....that Maye...is a cat..... I don't know if I just missed some seasons or something and this is the new thing but....whatever it is....I like it 😂
