I genuinely think that "it's for kids" is not an excuse to make something lazy and bad. By saying "it's for kids" just means it's low budget and they didn't even try because kids have no standards and are easily manipulated by marketing. Although, if you read through the comments under the trailer, even the little kids are complaining about how bad it looks, which is when you know it'll do bad. Even the kids hate it already.
For such a square-shaped character like Steve, they certainly chose the most round-shaped actor in Hollywood... they think kids can't differentiate shapes, I guess.
@SMacCuUladh I didn't see that movie but that is totally valid. I enjoyed him in School of Rock but there were some movies where I was confused or offended cause of him.
Jack Black voiced the Audiobook of "The Island", so he does have some Minecraft form. He actually did an awesome job on that one. The trailer for this movie looks awful though. I just hope the final version is better, and that Mojang is able to get involved with creative direction to make sure it's consistent with spirit of the game. I would hate for it to end up just a rehash of Jumanji.
There are tons of minecraft animations, kids do pay attention to them anymore, this one makes it more engaging for them and Jack Black is hilarious, I also love Jason Mamoa showing off his whimsical side, who cares about the outfit, its all just good fun!
@@LimegreenLlama "Just good fun" and "whimsical" I don't think is what they should have been going for, and obviously lots of other people feel the same. @eugene9852 Fair enough, I understand your point, I just don't feel that all this negative feedback is necessary, and if it's a kids' movie, then can't they just enjoy it? At least the actors aren't ragging on Minecraft like with Snow white...
And this isn’t a quick fix… the sonic situation took a lot of work to correct I’m sure but this one is kind of irreversible since they used real people and not cgi/ animation of any kind 🫤
Minecraft was released in 2011. This is not a movie targeted for kids, but rather a nostalgia movie just as Mario was. Although kids do play these games, they were made for an older generation that still plays them on a regular basis. The greatness of Minecraft was in part due to the facilities it gave people to make changes to it, which turned into a huge growth of its modding community. Here are the ages for mC players: 41% - 15 to 21 yo. 21% - 22 to 30 yo. 20% are 60+. So no, although it was once a game for toddlers, it is no longer the case. I am sorry but kids can't decide to go to the movies, and Jack Black isn't changing my mind on this one. The cast of characters looks absolutely ridiculous, they just don't get it... not everything has to be live action. Also, every single character in that trailer looks like a HUGE checkbox. They need to stop.
Although I'm not denying that a large audience of players are not kids, I question the merit of those statistics. It is easy to lie about your age or for the parent to make the account and let the child play the game. Sure, Roblox and Fortnite are way more popular for kids, but Minecraft is probably in the top 10 most played games by kids. Everything else you said I completely agree with.
This movie definitely is made for kids, the humor and the quality points towards that, which sucks but it is what it is. And shut up about „check boxes“ just because there is black woman in there, its starting to sound ridiculous.
A Minecraft movie should be a horror movie. Exploding creatures, death farms, screeching shadow demons and fireball spitting ghost babies? And none of that is as bad as the speedy child zombies... C'mon, this game is nightmare fuel!
Guy 1: Hmm... Who can we cast as Steve? A slim, agile character that everyone knows and loves... Guy 2: I got it! Jack Black! Guy 1: What? But he looks nothing like Steve??? Guy 2: I got the perfect thing for it. *Hands Jack Black a blue shirt* Guy 2: That's Steve! Guy 1: Yeah, that's steve!
I'm definitely NOT surprised by the melanzed woman. I mean, they JUST HAD to get an obese woman when there's tons of sexy representation?! That's the DEI culture baby 🤢
It's literally a sandbox game. You can do ANYTHING with it. The possibilities are literally endless. *This* is what they picked? I mean, OF COURSE this is what they picked 😂 We aren't allowed to have nice things anymore. We can't do silly/fun anymore! Everything has to be wrecked with a woke message!
This movie is trying to be a live action cartoon. Those really only work in the right hands. I’m sick of the amount of disrespect Hollywood has for animation!
Another movie with 16 producers…. 16… I work as a professional cinematographer and I can tell you the one thing that kills any creativity is having too many producers with corporate mindsets..
Yea I don’t think the diversity is the issue with the Minecraft movie, it’s how bag the cgi looks. Although in the game, Steve is brown, so casting a white actor for him is kinda weird lol.
My kids WERE excited about it...I tried to not mention the trailer after I saw it so they wouldn't ve disappointed..... Turns out they saw it day 1 and lost all interest. Not impressed. For years, they have made and watched animated stories from other players, which all seem more creative and memorable for other users.
There are animation studios, like Squared Media, that could have made the movie for them, and done it much better than this appears to be. I just hope this doesn't harm Minecraft overall. If everone hates the movie, it could even impact how people view the game.
To make the problems all about race and casting is to completely ignore all of our VALID complaints. It's a bad writing choice to bring modern people into a VERY beloved world and have them say things like "WHAT THE HELL??? This guy is such a tool bag! Ewwwww" It's an attack on those of us who love the world (and Steve, THE TOOLBAG) and don't view the world as a cross-eyed, disgustingly animated sheep. What a disservice and mockery to the minecraft community. ((Not to mention the blatant dismissal of BASIC minecraft mechanics. The crafting mechanic is mocked and the fact that piglins have come to the overworld WITHOUT turning to zombies proves this was a cheap movie with little research into how the game works. We would have love to see SOME minecraft youtubers, like a tribute to Technoblade!!! but this looks like they just dont care about our community))
I grew up with Minecraft having two characters, Alex and Steve, Alex being a redhead girl. Suddenly they add new characters into the game with diversity and then make this trailer. As a Minecraft fan since 2019, I'm vary disappointed (Edit: I'm not upset they added new skins, I just think it's fishy they did this right before the trailer, I just think they intentionally did this for the movie, not for the game)

I love minecraft so much. I im 21 years old and love building massive builds to my hearts content. Its a wonderful creative outlet for what ever you are wanting to do. I am very sad how the movie is looking. Kids deserve good movies too.
The movie looks 90% CGI, why not just finish off that 10% with CGI characters, you can even have Jack Black voice it. My 10 year old niece who loves minecraft doesn't know who these actors are, there's no need for them to be live action.
It just looks terrible. Seems like there's no story really (some call it Jumanji 3), and on top of that... IT LOOKS BAD. The charm of Minecraft is that it looks cheap, everything's square and flat because it's supposed to be the easiest textures and polygon number your computer can render. Now they just made everything high-poly and with realistic textures... but square. Why? What audience are they targetting? I think they never got past the thought of "Minecraft is popular, let's get popular actors and millions of dollar and we got a hit!".
As a Minecraft fan, I wish this movie would go in the direction of something similar to the theme and mood of stranger things, since there are monsters literally everywhere, and we, as mc players, have to face them in order to progress. I think it would’ve been easier to make if it were animated, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Just imagine how confused players would be by exploring a cave, finding diamonds and reaching the nether (even trying to sleep in the nether) and trying to interact with Piglins. That’s just me thoufh
How is it racist to not like the idea of someone being cast solely for their skin colour over their acting ability? I swear just bringing up race at all gets you labeled racist these days. Do people just not use their brains when they read anymore? Have people forgotten what racism is?
I am 55 years old and I have been playing minecraft in creative mode for years after playing it with my niece and nephews. When I saw the trailer, I immediately hated it. The movie should have been animated not live action.
I get it but there have actually been a rare few good gems in the last 10 years. For example:A Dog's Purpose, The Sound of Freedom, Lady-Ballers, IF, The Expendables films, and the recent Reagan movie.
I don’t like the excuse “It’s for kids” . There’s a lot of movies, tv shows, and games for kids that adults can enjoy too like Star Wars, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Super Mario Brothers
I can understand the cartoony feel of the world. I don't care much for the live action MCs. Even if just Steve should have been cgi. And that is what may lead people to belive it's DEI. All of them could have been transformed into their MineC skins, instead we get real people in what seems to be a checklist.
It’s a bit hypocritical to get upset at the black woman being casted and making assumptions about it without any context, yet conveniently brush over the fact that the character Steve is traditionally a black man In the game and is being played by Jack Black lol
I don't know much about Minecraft, but what I do know has me wondering how one gets a movie out of it. There is little to no story as far as I know. It's just building stuff and keeping it from being destroyed. I think you play as Steve, but I'm not sure, so I'm guessing Momoa and company are meant to be real-world players. As far as Momoa himself goes, I really don't know what they're doing there, and I'm not sure that I want to. As for Black, yeah, that's just straight-up lazy. My final verdict? I won't be seeing this movie. Yes, it is partly because I don't like Minecraft. I'm not much of a Pokémon fan either, but the Detective Pikachu trailer at least made me want to see it, and I very much enjoyed the movie. This, however, doesn't make me want to see it.
I mean they bullied the creators of Sonic til they got the design right. I watched the trailer for Minecraft & I got really confused I really thought they were going to make it similar to The Super Mario Movie not a Live Action with CGI...Also if a movie is "Live Action" but then they use a shit ton of CGI is it really live action?
I’ve been playing Minecraft since I was like 12, since the very beginning (25 now, still play sometimes). I lived through all the golden ages of the game on single or multiplayer. It was pure imagination and creativity. This trailer is pure pain and shame for the spirit of the game.
my nephew that is now 17 used to play it but since he’s playing high school football, I don’t think he plays it much anymore at all, but he used to play it probably 5 or 6 years ago
Minecraft was released only 13 years ago & is STILL the highest selling video game of all time... 🤔... Delete your foolish message, teenager... 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I don't mind the diverse casting. It anything, I think it plays into how most people have their own skin that they design. I also like to imagine what it would be like if I were in the Minecraft world. I'm not sure what the plot and all is, so I'll hold judgement until I see the movie
I’m 21 and have been playing Minecraft since I was a kid, Minecraft holds a special place in my heart. Saying the trailer was a disappointment would be an understatement. I also wouldn’t put it past Mojang to add woke ideology in the movie. They have those little splash texts on the main menu, and I sometimes see one that says “Be Anti-Racist!” But I. More worried about the fact that this movie looks awful. They gave us Minecraft story mode which was basically a movie. It had a great story, it was animated well. The characters were enjoyable and memorable. But this… I can’t get over the realistic cgi. And it’s even worse when you have watched all these Minecraft UA-camrs who have made amazing Minecraft stories and set the standard high, and MOJANG can’t even meet that standard. They’ve been disappointing fans for years so this isn’t anything new. I just hope they see all the discourse and go back to fix the movie. I love Jack Black, but when u think Steve, the last person that would come to mind would be him 😭 Also now I feel like Amala needs to make a video of her playing Minecraft for the first time 😈 that would be so fun to watch.
They made it about Minecraft Legends/Dungeons....not Minecraft....they could have made SO much about lore, all the fan theories but NO. They are apparently making a movie for little kids who are just starting to play MC but nooo...not for us who were there for it from DAY 1. The ones that waited for this movie, that deserve it. Dawn was white in the game. That's why people hate it. Because it's more beneficial to eliminate white characters to become black characters than it is to make a new character. Why isn't a Shaft remake getting done starring Tom Cruise as the titular character? Why are white characters always getting erased to be rebranded as any other race?
Me and my siblings have always played Minecraft. I haven’t in a while since I’ve been busy but they are all still in school and still play all the time. All of them are also worried about the movie. The youngest (6 years old) doesn’t want it to turn out like the last airbender movie did..😅🤞
I have played the game. Because of the variety of play options, I've spent plenty of time with it (especially since I try to extract as much enjoyment out of anything I paid money for) Steve - the developer and/or audience gave the player character a name. Initially it was very much a single player game, so when it became multiplayer (which existed by the time I learned of it) effectively every player was, "Steve" the NPCs were introduced before I found the game were originally Testificates later renamed Villagers. In a much later update "Illagers" aka pillagers (villager types with ill/hostile intent) were introduced. Fun fact, the iconic "Creeper" creature (One that seeks you if it sees you, and will explode if it is close to you long enough) was the first attempt to create a pig in game, but a mix up with x,y,z coordinates created the unusual shape, and it was turned into a hostile creature and re-skinned. I am not the person to explain Minecraft lore. I'm a casual gamer, and there are fun elements to the game to come back to from time to time. Aside from "Steve" there are basically no named characters in the game. There is the story of "Herobrine" but to the best of my knowledge that was a fake originally, which took on a legend of its own.
Lets be so for real, there are no black characters in Minecraft. There are two white protagonists (Steve and Alex) and there are ethnic villagers with different appearances based on biome and occupation. I'm not saying that the black character didn't specifically belong in the movie, but it does seem like the whole cast was just to fill checkboxes for diversity, and I would have much rather had a movie that looked like Minecraft instead of this overused live-action trope that banks off of an IP.
Oh my god are you special? There are no characters, just skin and there is black skin in the game, the one with a tank top and a gold chain and a black girl's skin.stop lying bout shit you have no idea bout
I just think they should’ve made the movie an animated movie. they could’ve even just based a movie around Minecraft story mode, which would’ve been 10 times better because there’s actual black characters in that too. But I think people are up in arms over nothing, I think the other Cass, besides Steve are supposed to represent players of Minecraft. So we don’t see why people are mad that there’s a black character. I think people are just so fed up with Hollywood at this point anything that comes out they’re gonna rip to shreds.
There is going to be severe wokeness. As someone who has been apart of the Minecraft community for the past few years and seen all of the "Minecraft Live" presentations since then, I can confirm that the Minecraft team is literally made up of THE MOST WOKE PEOPLE on the planet.
Told my kid we'd go to this before this trailer released. I did not know Jack Black was casted in this, let alone as Steve. So, yeah definitely not going now.
The black women lead isn't necessarily woke. But there's no reason for it to have adults in it. But if it's woke then I don't want kids to be entertained by it.
@@PolitikPolitik-fh2qcI mean idk bro it’s based off of a video game, like I would assume you want Steve to not be a white guy cuz he’s not white in the games, his skin colour isn’t white at all.

How are my younger kids supposed to see it? Edit: Mario Bros is a perfect example of a movie that appeals to adults' nostalgia and is also entertaining for kids.
It is racist if you have a problem with the mere existence of this black character in the movie, she's not race or gender bending anyone. Of course she might start to preach to us in the movie... but too early to start the hate on that. Lots of other reasons to dislike this though
yes! I hate the trailer because it just looks bad I have no idea why she's going on about wokeness and race, everyone in the trailer is white bare one person 😭
I have a hypothesis. Maybe Hollywood has been race swapping so many remakes of traditional European fairy tales that seeing a black character in a movie targeted towards children triggers a response in people who have been trained like a good Pavlov dog to respond to the race first or most vehemently since this is what Hollywood has been focusing on and forcing into movies for the past 4 years with the only reason being necessary DEI quotas to get grants and be eligible for awards. No big budget movie after 2020 is exempt from that reality of forced DEI quotas so seeing a black/disabled/minority ethnic/exaggeratedly queer character in anything nowadays immediately triggers this skeptical response because even if the movie is good and the characters fit in the film and tell an original story, the fact is that part of the reason why non-white, non-straight characters exist in a movie is because of those DEI quotas. And that's a very sad fact that everybody knows about. But this is just a hypothesis. A film hypothesis. (Seriously, people should stop calling hypotheses "theories" since everything with massive amounts of empirical evidence behind it like "gravity" is a theory, not a hypothesis.)
But why does everything have to look ugly nowadays? This trailer almost physically hurts to look at. Most of the appeal of Minecraft is that it looks nice in its block-y kind of style, which is why you want to build and explore
@@Ashbringer36THATS WHAT IM SAYINNNN IF they wanna make an MC movie... make it IN MC or make it a full animation like that fan Case0h trailer Live actions are dead now
People are jumping the gun with this one. There's no sign of wokeness or DEI and we don't know if it's meant to be funny that Jack Black is Steve, maybe the characters themselves are going to be in disbelief that he's Steve, we don't know what going on yet. So i'll reserve judgement until learning more about the actual setup and plot for the movie.
I think what's supposed to be funny, is that Steve think's he's super special, and the other characters literally don't even know who he is. Doesn't seem like a great idea. I'd guess this was made by someone who really doesn't know anything much about Minecraft.
I have the feeling they're going with a washed up Steve who has given up adventuring, but still acts like a big shot hero and they have to get him to realize his potential again. Though it just reminds me of what Disney did to Luke Skywalker in the sequels. The first time we get a Steve on the big screen and he has to be a washed up version.
what's funny is there were post saying "Minecraft gets more views than Sonic 3 trailer in one day" but fail to mention the dislike ratio. The Sonic 3 trailer like like 99% thumbs up and hardly any thumbs down while Minecraft is about 25% thumbs up and like 75% thumbs down.

By saying "it's for kids" just means it's low budget and they didn't even try because kids have no standards and are easily manipulated by marketing. Although, if you read through the comments under the trailer, even the little kids are complaining about how bad it looks, which is when you know it'll do bad. Even the kids hate it already.
THANK YOU!
I'm so tired of that claim being used as a 'scapegoat' for lazy writing!

For such a square-shaped character like Steve, they certainly chose the most round-shaped actor in Hollywood... they think kids can't differentiate shapes, I guess.

M50 been playing since redstone. I didnt even know they were making a movie. So I dont think im the target audiance.
It actually came out in 2009 under the title “Cave Game”. It is why it is Minecraft’s 15 year anniversary this year.
@@OrijJiro Lots of parents like playing Minecraft also. I started playing it with my kids around 8 years ago, and we still play it most weekends.

Ewwwww"
It's an attack on those of us who love the world (and Steve, THE TOOLBAG) and don't view the world as a cross-eyed, disgustingly animated sheep.

Steve and Alex are the only characters that actually matter. Who cares if there's different races in the movie?

Jack Black as Steve alone... is worth the million dislikes....
It just looks awkward. Alumio did a beautiful animated remake of the trailer and i would pay to see that!

I have played the game. Because of the variety of play options, I've spent plenty of time with it (especially since I try to extract as much enjoyment out of anything I paid money for)
Steve - the developer and/or audience gave the player character a name.

@@44_woohoo_44 because when this kind of reaction to something happens some actual racists, sexists etc ride the wave for free :D
