Ive been in this hobby for about 4 years now and I rember the first time I had to do the As150 battery connectors I was using cheap Solder wire and a cheap Soldering Iron man i tell you what it was the worst experience ive ever had. Now that im using good soldering iron and solder that alone makes a hell of a diffrence. And yes ive made many cold joints to in the begining. Also a biggie is yes flux is a must. A good soldering iron is a must! At least 50 W more is better. But a lot of those cheap soldering irons will claim higher wattage, but they really are not. Getting it hot is the most important thing. The hotter, the wire, the better and the bigger the wire, the harder it is to heat the wire. All Sauter has an average of 2.2% of flux already added in it. I personally do not use flux all that often as you can get a perfect solder joint without it. All flux is, is an acid in a to help clean and remove the toxin from the lead of the Solder. Check out the Pinecil soldering iron - does everything the big soldering stations do but with the bonus of running it from a LiPo if necessary!
I’ve got a pencil soldering iron, it works great for small and light stuff but when soldering heavy gauge wire I found it does not get hot and keep the heat like this station does.
When using thin solder like this for the bigger plugs, a tip is to create a thicker piece by folding two-three metres of solder in to a for example 50 cm length. Twisting the strands together eliminates the risk of having loose ends going outside of the melt pool as you feed the solder :)

Very good video! I'd add that for XT-like connectors it may be helpful to insert the other side of the connector just a little bit, so it's easier to keep the perfect form because the plastic could start melting. Also, it's better not to move the connection while the solder is setting, as it reduces the strength of the connection. And a very important thing - first put the cap on the wires and then solder 😄
Yes, it is good to put the opposite end and to stop it from melting on the XT connectors. I explained that in the video. A little bit of movement while the soldered yours is OK it’s almost next to impossible to not move the wire, a tiny tiny bit when you are that hot and it stays melted for that long, and yes, you should always put the cover on but when making charge leads if you don’t have the other ends on yet it doesn’t matter.

So is the solder acting like glue? Do the wires and/or connectors need to touch or will the electricity pass through the solder?
Soldering is fusing the two wires together as one. The wire should always touch when you are soldering technically speeding you could bridge a gap with solder and still make electrical connection but you would not have a strong joint.
This is a nightmare to me :). I hate soldering

If you don’t know how to solder wire you shouldn’t have this rc hobby .
There is a lot of people especially new guys getting into the hobby they don’t know. And it is something everybody should and needs to learn. But there is a lot of guys that have issues and cold solder joints.
