With this AF test between the C70 and R5C the result is really surprising result I found.
The C70 did quite well against the R5C.
Both cameras build around the Dual Pixel CMOS AF I is that an advantage or disadvantage only the future use will tell us.

This was a great test, that is awesome for everyone to see. I feel that we have to keep an open mind about what we're seeing though. You have to factor in the different lens performance and focusing distance of the lenses you're using. I think both of these cameras performed well under these circumstances. We all expect more out of the R5C autofocus, but I don't think we give the C70 enough credit because the AF is a whole lot better than people make it out to be. We can't ask for a cinema camera, and also expect it to perform like a mirrorless photo camera. I used to be a Lumix shooter before getting into the canon line, so my AF expectations are very low 🤣
You are spot on and I agree that we need to keep an open mind. I have a feeling that R5C is better than that and also we have really under estimate the C70 as we mainly compare it to the mirrorless camera specially the R5 or R6 line. I thought about the lens difference. The C70 had the 28 - 70 f2.0 compare to the R5C with 70 - 200 f2.8. I am going to test this week with R5 and to find out what we can learn. I was a lumix shooter as well before coming back to Canon again. I am feeling the pain of those time of AF pain haha.
We ALL expect? Actually no. We don't all expect anything from the R5C other than a Cinema camera. Certainly not expecting it to replace the R5 or R3 in AF performance. Would be like expecting an R5, R3 and C300 all in one camera for the price of little more than an R5.
Probably best to compare AF with the same lenses!

The R5C auto focus is disappointing to say the least. After using it for couple of months; I am kind of looking hope from Canon system itself. R5 has fantastic auto focus; but the files come put of it is not the same with issue of overheat. Then comes R5C to fix all those issues. But the auto focus is really bad. It looses the subject all the time if it is not a head shot. Battery life is horrible. In that tiny screen you can't see well the focus peaking. So you would find the focus issue only later. Unless you again need to carry a bulky external screen on top of every other heavy stuff. And not to mention; powering that heavy thing. Not really a feasible solution in remote locations.
I have a very important trip coming up and I am now really wondering if I should just sell off the R5C and buy a monitor that would record the video from R5 externally without any issue of overheat!
This is so stupid from Canon. They do have the technology; but that doesn't work with the cinema camera operating system as that one is old and the auto focus had not been updated the same was it had been with the photo side of things. In R5 they did manage to include the video feature on it. But of course R5C being an answer to the over heating; just seems take off some stuff they have add a fan and sell. Feeling a bit cheated to be honest!
Great tests, my son would never have been that patient at that age. A couple of points about the test. First there are different lenses on each camera. For a totally objective test, you'd need the same lens on each camera since AF performance can vary by lens. Otherwise you can switch the lenses midway in the test and check AF performance again. The other issue is that each camera is set to a different resolution. That too can impact AF performance.
Lenses make a huge difference and to make it truly a apples to apples test it needs to have the same lens.

To be honest I'm kinda glad the launch issues with the camera are only software. The hardware is there to run the full fat AF on the photo side, which means it should just be a matter of the videoOS dev team utilising it like the photoOS devs have.
Also, at 9:17 you've somehow turned your continuous AF off ('AF' icon greys out) rather than it fails to track. Just be careful you aren't pressing the 'AF-AE lock button' as that will basically put the camera into a full time manual focus mode.
Very nice job! I would only point out the exposure characteristics of both cameras was not the same. The Canon R5C appeared to be over exposed. You used the ND filters on the C70 to get your exposure correct outdoors. The R5C was hindered due to over exposure characteristics of the scene. In a better controlled environment the Cameras might have performed similarly. That's one patient young man. Keep up the great work. My current set up includes three Cameras C300 MKII, C70 and R6. Thinking about upgrading the C300 MKII but not sure if I want to get the R5C or another C70. What do you think?

I was disappointed in the R5C at the start, but towards the end became impressed. I'm taking off eye detection now as it seems to lose focus more so than with it off. Also I think you should have matched the resolutions in full frame too, to make them as equal as possible. But other than that definitely a good comparison video for R5C and C70 users to check out. Look forward to checking out the low light tests.

Adding to your comment about eye AF, I think it’s a gimmick/marketing tactic. For photo, it makes perfect sense, but I can’t remember the last time I shot shallow enough or close enough to the subject for eye AF to matter. Even then, face AF gets the job done 90% of the time.

Canon needs to put the video settings back into the "photo" mode of the R5c. That operating system (OS) is so much further ahead in terms of AF and battery efficiency compared to the cinema side. Which makes sense, as the development team for the cinema OS always had cameras with huge batteries (so efficiency was less of a concern) and less of a demand for snappy AF (compared to photographers). I think the dual OS is cool, but what a shame Canon decided to gut video out of the photo side. Makes it worse than the R5 in so many ways. This is an easy fix and I think Canon would be crazy not to do it.
I cannot agree more with you that Canon need to bring the option for video recording in the Photo Mode like for example have the custom mode C for the setting. I think as well that a firmware update will do it. I also think what Canon gone for is a purely hybrid camera with distinctive functionality and OS to make it clear in which mode you are in to be only that. So far my test on AF is really surprising how good the AF is in the R5C. It is really good. I did a test yesterday compare it with R5 video to come hopefully today. I think from the experience of the R5 launch and overheating saga we become skeptical and judge the R5C before really known it well. As Canon always dose it improve the camera with every firmware update fingers crossed.
@@KHCAMS No No No. The R5C is not the R5. In cinema and movies, a snappy AF is not always desireable.

Could you also test AF functions in 4k 60p and 8k 60p modes? I heard 60p modes are often do not allow af functions without external power

Only raw modes in 50/60p require external power.
I just got this camera! I am struggling to figure out how to transfer videos to my phone or laptop. Would you know what cord I would need or any info at all will help! Loved the video!
Hello Jerod, do you mean the R5C? Either that is the C70 or R5C I think for now you can not directly transfer the clips from the camera to the your computer using the USB C connection but when I connect the camera I can Final Cut Pro to transfer the clip. So the option is to get yourself a card reader now you can get double card reader for CF Express and SD card to use to transfer your videos and photo to your computer or your phone. I hope that helps.
Also, it may be the settings on the R5c. One needs to find the sweet spot for the auto-focus settings.

How about the brightness of the settings displayed on screen? I’ve been having a hard time seeing my R5C settings in outdoor conditions, and never struggle with the C70. Your side by side clips show a big difference in the brightness of the text. Any solution that you know of to make it bright and easy to read on the R5C as it is on C70? (the text, not the whole image)

I really do not understand what is happening with UA-cam but I uploaded in 4K and till now in the studio it keeps saying HD and 4K processing. It is been more than 3 hours now. I am really sorry for the inconveniences.

@@KHCAMS Thank you. How do you like the 28-70 for video? I haven't bought any RF lenses yet but the 28-70 f/2 seems like an amazing lens. It's like getting close to a 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm prime in one and still can go to 70mm, Seems like a great option that would stay on the camera 90% of the time and then use the 70-200mm when you need a nice zoom. Is not having IS on the 28-70 been an issue for you?
@@pbfilms6356 It is wonderful lens I love it among all my lenses every time I go to it first I have not seen any issue with it so far even with no IS. The IBIS in the R5 and IS in the C70 really compensate really well. I think it is the best lens I own so far. Yes you are right you have 3 primes in one lens. I am now invest into get a super zoom lens.

Eddie did great. I'm surprised that C70 did much better. Auto-focus on R5c is the only thing stopping me from getting that camera. I will keep using my R5 for now. The jury is still out on R5c auto-focus. Maybe Canon will tweak it down the road on firmware.
No, I think it makes a big difference speed when you compare between eye and face.
I am telling I was chock to see the C70 holding up that much. Yes if it is the same as it is in C70 then that is not good. I think Canon will certainly improve it with firmware update. There is more to it. Let stay tune. I am going to compare the R5 with R5C to see how much is the difference there is. More to come.

@@KHCAMS I meant to say the face detection is faster bc it's bigger than the eye. C70 performed better when its' face detection was competed against R5c eye detection.
@@bullwaves6681 Yes you are right I have also realize that. When I have them both on face detection only no eye R5C was better and with No Face Detection the R5C was again better.
Your example of the AF performance with various lenses on the Canon R5C is no representative of the AF in general as found by other owners. Expecting every tool and camera to be identical clones is sorta unrealistic and in many cases not a desireable feature. A feature set for a niche user group for whom the camera is not designed. Most C300 & C500 operators are not looking for the "Snappy Autofocus" feature found on still cameras. The R5C is a legitimate "B" cam and main cinema camera is some applications. Not sure those application require the "snappy AF". The R5C wears the "C" badge for...... Cinema
That’s a deal breaker for me. Hope they sort it out in the next firmware update.

What made you purchase the R5C after already owning a C70 and a R5C?

I always wanted a true hybrid camera in one body. The combination of R5 and C70 was the answer for the desire and now there is R5C which is true hybrid camera so I got my wish but above all I love comparing and studying camera share with the world in my channel too. No I am thinking of selling the C70 yet maybe in the future if there is the update to the C70 which can shoot 8K then I will to replace it with. otherwise for now I know that I have two good video cameras that I can use if I am doing a long format shooting like events or documentary I know that it will not overheat or stop recording because of the record limit. AF performance is variable by mounting different lens. This test is not fair. Not the same lens for each camera
I thought about that too. You have a valid point and now I am renting the 28-70 f2.8 so that I can have the same lens on both of them and test again and we can in that case so stay tune. Thanks

The c70 seems like it’s doing better or at least as good as the R5c. Smh. This means the R5c AF is not good at all compared to the R5. Because we already know the R5 AF blows the c70 out of the water. Hmm. I have an R5 and want a R5c and this is troubling.
Yes I was quite surprise to be honest. I am going to do more test and specially compare it with the R5 and that we can see truly how good is the R5C AF. And then it can help you make the inform decision. Thanks
@@KHCAMS my 3 worries with selling my R5 for the C is losing the battery life, ibis and great AF. I heard it only gets 30 minutes at 4k60. Damn! But I heard the oversampled 4k60 and FHD on the R5c are way better than the pixel binned on the R5. Also I saw the dynamic range and iso performance may be slightly better than the R5.
@@presise1620 in term of image quality I say wow is so sharp and crispy way better than the R5 and blow away the C70. In the video mode you have the IS as same as the C70 in the Photo mode there is no even IS. Battery life is terrible compare to R5 but you can do about 40mins when doing 4K60. I am planning a video to compare to it in term of battery life.
You have dual base ISO, I have test it yet to understand how good it is in low light. Dynamic range I am yet to test too. Thanks
Do you use Canon speed booster with C70? F numbers are different between both.
Yes I use the canon 0.71X speed booster EF - RF with all my EF lenses. It is great piece of gear for the C70
The C70 preformed better than the R5C because Eric walked out of frame on the R5C as the R5C is zoomed in more and has a smaller field of view than the C70,
I think you maybe right I tried to do it this way so that to negate the Super 35 of the C70. I am going to do another update it video of those two but with the same lenses attach and we can if there will be a difference.

How can you have such expensive cameras and then upload your video in 360p? I just don't get it...
I uploaded on 4K it is UA-cam still processing for the 4K even the HD still processing I really don't know why more than 3 hours. I just check it again on the studio and still saying process HD weird.
@@KHCAMS Thats really strange... still only 360p is available. Normally at least FullHD is available reasonably fast :/
