can't imagine such high quality content is available for free. Thank you Simon for creating this channel
Glad you enjoy it!
Little known fact regarding longer lenses creating a thinner depth of field: using a shorter focal length lens of the same aperture, but moving closer so that your subject is the same size in the frame, the depth of field is the same!
Which program do you use to layer the images with different focuses on top of each other? 🧐
@@cloud.3 Photoshop
I really love the blurry background.... I can't afford a really expensive one but I got a Canon 80d I haven't learned it I like it better than the Nikon D5000 I call it a clunker maybe it's the lens
Simon, not only do you have vast knowledge on photography, but perhaps most importantly, you have a wonderful, lovely way of presenting and explaining things! Thank you so much!
Wow, thank you
My favorite Teacher on UA-cam Academy. 10/10
Mine too
This is so incredibly helpful and really sets you apart from a lot the other photography “educators” on UA-cam, in that your content is, imo, much more useful and educational. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Yesseri. I am glad I found this knowledgable man. He is a great help!
Simon is the best!
After asking people for year's( and being told it was just LUCK) ,this was the fist time someone told me how EXACTLY to shoot a sunstar. THANK-YOU very much for that. I'm a happy camper.🤩
184k views and only 9500 likes.
Come on, guys. Hit the button. It's not often you find a video explaining something so clearly and it not be overly wordy. Precise and to the point, with clear examples. I appreciate this guy.
I’m trying to cut back on UA-cam’ers who I follow, I get so many reminders that I struggle for time to watch stuff.
BUT, I have to subscribe to your channel, the subject’s you cover are so good, the quality of the images you use to promote the content are superb and I can’t wait to see more from you.
Thanks for the hard work putting these together, it hasn’t gone un-noticed by me and it really shows 👏👏👏
Thanks Killer!
How is this not a masterclass! Thank you 🙏🏽
Wow, thank you!
While watching the video that's exactly what popped up in my mind too. Absolutely fantastic video. I have learnt much more in less than 14 minutes than what I have learnt about photography over the years. 👏👏👏
This goes way beyond the description I was taught before where wider aperture just means more light and thinner depth of field. This is one of the most interesting and useful photography videos I’ve seen, one of my favorites from your channel! Thank you Simon!
Summer of 2023 I discovered your channel and the opening song was stuck in my head as I watched your videos every night after shooting all day. It was a great summer. Cheers from San Diego
These are some great tips. When I started my photography journey, I bought an entry-level camera and spent the majority of my money on learning so I did a diploma in photography. The great thing was my assignments made me test all these settings and I had a professional photographer as my tutor correcting me on my settings, light and photography.
This is the first aperture video that I have understood. The graphics referring to depth of field in conjunction with aperture size were particularly helpful
One of my favorite videos! I actually understood everything you said about the subject! There are very very few videos out there like yours!! Great job for the beginning photographer!!
Awesome! Thank you!
You mentioned a neutral density filter for your waterfall photography. Please consider a video on various filters and their uses. Thanks for the videos! Super helpful!
How am I just finding this channel! Thank you for sharing such great content for a novice like me. 😇
Welcome to the channel!
Simon, you articulate these concepts beautifully. Thank you.
This dude is a legend, other youtuber the younger gen focus on tech and not lens and how to shoot.
Never touched the AV-mode before I found your videos on youtube. Tried to use this mode for the first time today and I'm over the moon with the results & differences compared to my earlier pictures. Thanks for posting these videos! I now finally understand the impact of aperture, shutter speed & ISO.
Just catching up with some of your older videos and how wonderful they are. Full of easy to understand explanations that even I can get to grips with. Yours is the best and easiest to understand “photography made simple” UA-cam channels out there by a country mile. Thank you so much
Glad you like them!
The sunstar tip alone was worth it. Of course I'm more than happy to watch the entire video to get there.
What a remarkable clarity in explaining the topic! The photos shown are very impressive as well!
Thanks!
Simon: This is by far the most useful and understandable aperture video I've seen. I learned a lot. Thank you for putting so much thought and effort into your videos!
The detail in your video's you teach us is second to none. Love your channel and thank you.
I would add to the other very favorable comments that you've received, and that is that you have a voice that would do well in broadcasting. I think it adds interest to the already fine content you present. You have excellent production values.
Simon, I just found your channel, and I'm soo pleased! I've had some success as a real estate photographer for 7 years, but I'm a one trick pony! Any time people ask me to do anything other than what's in my skill set, I have the toughest time. I've been devouring your videos and feel like I already have a MUCH better grasp on how to use my camera more efficiently.
Fantastic!
What I like most,,,, I always learn something new Thank you
So nice of you
Thank you sir, I just want to say that I can understand your explanation even though I'm a complete newbie and just got into photography.
Great to hear!
Thanks! Great video:) I've replaced the "F" with a 1 as in a (math) fraction: 1/4 is a bigger value (a bigger hole) than 1/11 Easy to explain and makes the illogical aperture numbers easy to understand and visualise. An excellent online tool to learn and practise how the DoF works is free and called dofsimulator net :) Beautiful tool.
Great tip!
Thank you so much! I now how these things work (more or less), but I have never understood WHY aperture effect the result the way it does. You really explain tings, so everyone can understand.
Glad it helped!
I just bought a serious camera instead of the common point and shoot. I appreciate your information . This has become my go to channel.
You are by far the best at explaining technical aspects of photography. I’ve watched so many of your videos and have absorbed so much information. Thanks!
Wow, thanks!
Simon, you are a brilliant instructor. I have watched many great photographers explain how to control the aperture and the effect it has on the DoF and fail miserably due to making it far too complex, You have explained this in simple terms, making it clear as day. Thank you.
Thank you Simon! Your videos are great. I was into photography decades ago, long before there ever was a DSLR camera. But now I am learning photography from you. I am blind in one eye now, and have very poor vision in the other, but I have glasses, and I am going to try. I bought an old DSLR camera, and it will be here tomorrow or the next day. I can only try…it won’t hurt. Thank you so much!
In over 50 years of very amateur photography, I’ve never seen anyone explain photography as well as superb Simon. And love his splendid photographs used in videos.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you mr.Simon for sharing this valuable infomation in such an eloquent way!
I don't even have my first camera yet but I'm learning so much from your videos. And it's making me even more excited to get it and experiment with all the tips I'm getting from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
So very well explained and by a fellow Maritimer too! I've been going through all of Simon's tutorial videos and I've picked up an incredible amount of knowledge for use with my DSLR. Even though I've had an SLR for some time now, I've realized how little I really used it. No more just putting it on F11 or F8 and hoping for the best. I've re-discovered my enjoyment of taking photos and my telephoto lens is no longer just gathering dust - thanks Simon.
You're very welcome!
Master class on Aperture & DOF! Very useful in creative, art photography. Thank you.
It's unbelievable that these wonderful contents are available easily, thanks a million Simon🌹
Glad you like them!
Simon, very clear explanation of apertures, distance to subject and distance between subject and background and how these all play a role in how the final image turns out. Thanks so much for this, nicely done!
Rich
Glad you enjoyed it
Simon, your detailed and simplified explanations make it so anyone can snap amazing photographs! 5 stars out of 5!
You have a way of explaining things like a professor. I found this channel very professional and informative. Thank you, Simon.
Simon, I almost watch your videos exclusively. Have been since I started doing wildlife. I love everything you've taught. Thanks so much!
Wow, thanks
Thanks !! This clears up a lot of questions I have about aperture. I'm using a 70-300mm lens with Fstops 4.5-6.3 in mildly low light to get morning pics of hummingbirds at the feeder that hangs in the shade of a large tree behind my house. Distance from camera to subject is about 25 feet. The pics come out pretty good but not super crisp like I would like them to be. I'll try experimenting with smaller apertures to see what happens !
Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge and experience with the rest of us .
This is one of the very best explanation on DOF that I've seen so far. Very easy to follow and understand, especially the explanation why something works as it is.
Glad it was helpful!
One of the best videos and explanations I've ever seen on aperture. Thanks, really enjoy the videos. Cant wait for more
Awesome, thank you!
Very knowledgable and professional way of explaining. I've leaned so much from you.
I might have to watch this a 100 times as a beginner. I’m really excited, and so far, Simon you are my favorite! I’m really learning a lot watching your videos and love the photos you take!! It really inspires me to grab a camera and try to experiment. Can’t wait to get my first camera and try new things!!! 👍
Another amazing video Simon, I have been shooting for a while but I always love these little refreshers which make me rethink how I go about capturing new images!
Welcome!
Yes sir, you are a great teacher! Thanks for sharing.
I am loving your channel......always something new to learn and done in a way that is easy to understand and apply. I so appreciate the time you put in to doing these videos.
You are so welcome!
So much priceless knowledge! Thank you!
Awesome teaching style. I have the r6 and am loving it. My favourite subjects are always on the move, horses, birds, etc. I’m learning a lot through your videos. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing!
Once again, great video. Short precise and to the point..! You have an amazing way of explaining these things to amateur photographers.
My pleasure!
This was one of the most helpful videos I have ever seen, thank you so much!
Ive recently taken an interest to photography and your channel has been so helpful and informative. Thank you so much!
Gonna try the sun star shot tomorrow if the sun shows itself. Thank you for the lesson.
This is such a helpful video - now all I need to do is listen and watch a few more times until the info is instilled in my memory! I love the way you explain things so clearly and not too fast, so that I don't have to keep pausing the video to try and keep up! Have enjoyed and learned from every video of yours that I have watched. That black fox was a stunning creature. What a treat to be able to capture it on your camera.
Thanks! Those foxes are actually a genetic variation of a Red Fox that we call a Silver Fox.
Awesome info and well explained. Thank you for this!
Good video this morning with clear explanations, thanks Simon.
Glad you enjoyed it
You manage to pack so much clear usable knowledge in short presentation. Thank you for your efforts Simon. Also, your images are..... WOW!
Many thanks!
thank you so much! I have a photo shoot tomorrow!
Your videos are massively helpful. Thank you 🙏
You're a great teacher. One of the best ways I've seen these concepts explained. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Simon, thank you so very much for these videos. I teach Digital Photography on the high school level and use your videos all the time to help students understand many of the photography concepts. Fantastic information. You are a great teacher and I appreciate your help and expertise!
Welcome!
Hi Simon, That has to be the best "DEPTH OF FEILD explained" I've ever come across. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Wow, thanks!
Superb Sir!! You are hitting it out of the park with your value addition. Have been taking pictures for 25 years without understanding why my DOF is shallow with big apertures and the converse with small apertures. Today, I am clear as a crystal, thanks to you. Brilliant!!
Great consolidation of what an aperture can do for a photo.
i just started my photography journey. im so glad i found your videos.
I'm so glad!
Simon, many thanks for your excellent videos! I enjoy each one more than the last. I haven't watched them all yet, but I really enjoy them.
Glad you like them!
Well thought through and presented in a none condescending manner. Only found your site a few weeks ago, but enjoying your observations and tips. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
I've been shooting for a long time after watching hours of videos daily learning, but the way you just explained these different aperture situations was perfect
Thanks very much!
such an amazing and clear video! thank you!
7:17 THANK YOU SIMON! I have been wondering forever where one puts one's focus point - not only for landscapes and pics with deep DOF but also for street photography and other general purposes. Ever thought of doing a video on "Where should I put my focus point"? Some more golden info here...thank you again!
Specially the last tip, as to how to get those spikes in sun shine, was the most useful hint for me. I had been trying to get some information as to how to get those spikes and You showed me the way, Simon! You are awesome!!
Glad I could help!
Very well explained use/ definition of aperture. Diagrams were great. I appreciate this video as you don't simply explain what effects take place when changing aperture, but you go into detail of "why" these effects happen. Thank you for your contributions to this art. You're quickly becoming my favorite photography youtube content creator.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much. We went to the beach this past weekend and I've used your tips to try and better my bird photography. They have helped a lot.
Excellent!
Thank you , going to put this all to work at the weekend …. I have some good kit but have no idea. You’ve made things a lot clearer Thanks Fella!
Glad it was helpful!
Really cool, just got my first prime lens so I've been focusing a lot on depth of field settings, great timing of this video!
Such helpful tips. Great video thank you
Nothing earth shattering new to me as a long time photographer, but dang if this isn’t a fantastic reminder to me, with some subtle improvements I can make. Quality content! Hats off to you sir.
Another great session with tons of useful information packed into it! I hope you eventually get into the processing side of photography in future videos. in the meantime, keep ‘em coming!
I do have one on processing bird pics.
I so enjoyed this video/class. I have watched dozens and dozens of videos, attended endless webinars whose presenters for both are definitely knowledgeable and dedicated, but are not teachers. Your explanations in just the right speed to avoid replaying constantly and in layman terms, convey the subject in a way that can be grasped and understood by not only beginners, but as a refresher for intermediates and others who teach. Thank you..
Glad it was helpful!
You do a very good job at explaining things. That 500mm f/4 lens sounds really impressive.
Thank you! It was very helpful!
As always, great content.
I learned about aperture as a kid this way: Make a fist and leave a small opening and look through the opening at something in the distance. What you're looking at will appear sharper than if you weren't using the "fist viewer." Now gradually widen the fist opening and you will see the object in the distance become less sharp.
When I use Aperture priority, we do the work around to use for instance a set 200 ISO. We can do this on both the Nikon D5300 and the Sony A73. This helps alot when I am using Aperture priority but the ISO is higher then I want and it truly changes the sharpness on the image without the noise! High ISO settings tend to be noisy on both cameras when it gets set too high in the priority mode. Its a great work around to improve the image quality. If you set the ISO too low to work with the aperture set on priority mode, it simple won't take the picture. So its a practice shot before using it at times. Well work using and my husband was setting up both cameras the other day with this......I got the clearest Raven shots and a very far off eagle shot as well. So to confirm, the cameras both set the shutter speed only by doing this.
Really enjoy watching your tutorials. There a great help. Please keep up the great work. 👍
Thanks, will do!
Very well explained for a person new to DSLR photography and very helpful.
Super awesome. Thank you, mister d'Entremont.
You're very welcome!
Love the new background/setup. Thanks for your videos!!!
Thanks! My daughter did the painting!
Thank you so very much for your wealth of knowledge...
New subscriber and new to photography. I have started binging you videos soaking up any knowledge I can to help me learn.
I LOVE ALL of your videos, but this one I have saved because it’s so informative!
I'm so glad!
Just recently stumbled upon your chanel. I’ve been shooting most of my life ( just turned 70, gasp!), and though your vids are review of learned techniques, I love your plain english explanation of them. No need for all the ‘techno jargon’ most ‘educators’ spew. Your vids are easy to follow and understand. Your examples are stunning as well. Your labour of love is sure to help many. Keep it up. Much admiration here.
Thanks very much!
Love the way you where able to explain this Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks! I can’t express how much this 14min video helped me to understand how to improve my photography! Much better than 1 hour long explanations from other sources!
So well explained and presented.
Subscribing!
Great to hear!
