- Our favourite off-the-rails squirrel was on his best behaviour back in the days of Twelve Tales: Conker 64. The drastic transformation into Conker's Bad Fur Day came about long before Twelve Tales was complete as a game in its own right, but to this day we come across people eager for a better look at Conker's origins. So why not? We've got a stash of unseen footage, we've got Louise from the Conker team, and we've got a tale to tell...

If Rare ever does a second Replay, they seriously should consider adding a graveyard/cutting room floor section, where these unfinished games can be played. (obviously put a warning that they're not completed/fully playable and are prone to crash) but it would make a fascinating addition and something no one has ever really done before.
Dinosaur Planet ans Sabreman would make another great one for the collection.

But isnt Chris more of a drunk person and not the true Conker? I know he voiced him in Bad Fur Day but if he doesn't want to do a new game for Conker with a voice, its time to find someone else for the role.
Hes probably lazy or too old to continue with the character anyway. If there could be a sequel, a new person could voice Conker and Chris just tells the game developers on what the sequel would be about, etc.

At least this video confirmed that the data of the game is not lost. I remember hearing rumors and stories of how the last remaining rom was deleted, or sold to a guy who died, with no where abouts on the rom's location. I always felt those stories sounded too fishy to be true, but Louise O'Connor pretty much confirmed that Rare still has the game in their archives. It's believable too, since the footage shown is without a doubt the highest resolution imagery and footage of the game, ever released to the public.
+SpongicX Shitty thing is someone who often shares has a cart of this game, but it is empty thanks to Rare's old security measures.
+SpongicX I heard that the developers catridge had volatile memory back then in order to reduce costs into making more of those catridges.
That's clearly not the case anymore, since Rare was able to dig out the game through their archives, and give us those clear quality gameplay clips. Whether the game is finished or not, I want Twelve Tales: Conker 64 to get released as either a rom, or as dlc for Rare Replay.

Honestly, this looks like it would have been an amazing game. What we got is great, but you can tell how hard they worked on Twelve Tales. Seriously a shame they didn't release it then make Bad Fur Day later on.

+TheCartoonGamer8000 This is old footage, but there might be a chance of it living because someone found a dev cartridge with "twelve tales conker 64" written on it but it is presumed that the data on it had been wiped.
The footage shown here has never been seen, and is in very high quality. This is proof that Rare still has a build of the game in their archives.
The drastic change from cute and kid friendly to adult and mature was single-handedly one of the greatest decisions ever.

I'm extremely glad this exists, I always wanted to play twelve tales as a kid, and tried to play pocket tail as my substitute for it missing. Seeing it documented brings so much unbridled joy to me that I don't think anyone else could understand.
I know a lot of people already said that, but I would love to see this prototype as DLC in Rare Replay.

1- Banjo-Threeie was never a thing, it was just a joke said at the end of Tooie as a reference to Snake Rattle n Roll's ending, and the Spaceworld video was just a tech demo showcasing the power of the Gamecube with reused Tooie assets.
2- Conker's Other Bad Day never left the concept stage, and again the Spaceworld video is just to showcase the power of the GC.
@kaymez I know. I still think including these protos would be a good DLC for Rare Replay. Maybe the Dinosaur Planet they'd have would be a different build than the one that was found recently.

As much as i loved Bad Fur Day i still wish that Twelve tales would be released as a prequel to Bad Fur Day!
you guys could have turned it into Conker's life as a child and transform the child like aspect of the levels and add Bad Fur Day's humor to stay true to Bad Fur Day! I would pay to see Twelve Tales as a prequel with the same levels they were designed to be just add adult humor movie references with each hat like BFD did and different mechanics to go around Bad Fur Day as well! It could have also told us the story of how Conker became so greedy and a drunkard!

I think that different hats mechanic is still in Conker's Bad Fur Day. In this part where Conker had to swim in this underwater place in a safe while avoiding these robo fish (I think it's a parody of The Abyss), he wears a torch hat and in this stone age part, he wears a black saber-toothed tiger hat.

The orginal conker actually looks really fun, imfact if that version was kid friendly it probably would have sold more then banjoe kazooie, but as somome who loves conkers bad fur day i'm glad we got the more ranchy version
My guess is that both versions could work really well. It's so disappointing that a game that was almost finished got cut just because some idiot wrote a bad review. The fact that they put so much work and detail in a promising game that got never released is just bad. Twelve Tales would become another hit, maybe even better than SM64 or BK. Don't focus on the cuteness when the title itself is full of pure fun, great ideas and innovative gameplay. Rare made a big mistake here. They still could have released BFD for an older audience later.
So....are we getting a new conker game or what? I understand conker had a heck of a dev change, from kiddy to mature. I am sure there is something for us you're teasing us about. :)

H4mm3rSp4c3 same here, and ya true. I did hear the voice of conker said that, the team that made donkey kong 64, didn't do a great job of optimizing the game, compared to the conker dev team. Granted this was 10+ years ago. their dev team is pretty small now.

The unreleased version should be put on Nintendo's N64 Virtual Library.
Oh god tell me that's footage of a Twelve Tales ROM, because this is too high-quality to be a video that was uploaded 8 years ago, or 30 minutes worth of footage given to different magazine publishers like Nintendo Power, in the form of a VHS. Besides, we have so much fun playing all your other unreleased games that are found, dumped, and let loose and free for other players to enjoy, such as the cancelled Battletoads GBA game, Diddy Kong Pilot, and that's about as much as I can think of. If that is a ROM, please release that ROM, because it's been too damn long, and Conker's Pocket Tales has gotten a bit boring, not to mention CPT wasn't well-recieved, but that was because of it's top-down perspective. It has been 18 years since Twelve Tales' reveal, and 14 years since Conker's Bad Fur Day came out. Besides, ever since Twelve Tales' cancellation, I desperately dreamt day & night about playing that game (not all the time, but when it popped into mind, I did). I mean, even if it's just the E3 1997 beta, and not the one from the half-hour long footage, we'd still play it, give it a 12 out of 10, and wait for the other one. Basically, no procastinating, dump the ROM now, and let all out lives be complete. That, or Twelve Tales as Rare Replay DLC.

Renzo Ugarelli Not to mention, to further prove that the footage is emulator-quality, the emulator is a bit glitches, so although the footage doesn't look too bad, Berri uses Conker's eye graphics, and the clouds in the main area is all glitched up. It might be something to point out that they might've used Nemu64, as that emulator's known for having graphical messes. Just look at Super Smash Bros. running on Nemu64. It looks like puke compared to running it on Project 64, a much better and handier N64 emulator. What other N64 emulator has widescreen?

With further inspection, the resolution actually looks to be 494 by 360. I'm not sure why it would be such an obscure resolution let alone aspect ratio, but that's what I'm seeing.
The FPS of the footage seems to be Proyect64's. And there's almost no shadowing so im guessing it IS P64
I wouldn't know exactly, because I use v1.7 of Project 64. I looked at v2.1, and it somehow acts crappier than v1.7.
This is something I've ALWAYS wanted to play!!! I wish you guys release a Beta of it sometime in Rare Replay. It's been a dream of mine since I was little to play this game!!!

I can't help but feel Tweleve Tales would have been a far better game. Although I see the point of trying to stand out among platformers, I think it would have been a real strong competitor. The idea of different hats per level, with different abilities, mirrors the transforming in Banjo Kazooie, and if it's one thing the world needs, it's more platformers like Banjo-Kazooie. Let's hope that one day a rom surfaces.
I wish this game was unlockable in Rare Replay similar to Star Fox 2 on the SNES Classic Edition.

I still have absolutely 0 idea what happened between the kid-friendly platformer the first builds were and the decidedly less kid-friendly release version but I'm glad it happened.
You tease me with telling me that the game is still in your archive and you still don't give us the rom of the game T~T I have always wanted to play Twelve Tales and even more so since the game was technically finished and just delayed and delayed until they just scrapped the release because of Banjo and other platforming games coming out. I find it saddening to hear about gaming being canceled to release because of other games coming out. If you have the rom Rare, can we please have it? I would love you more than the 100% I already do....
This is what was missing from Rare Replay.
I mean, the games selection was great, replaying Bad Fur Day in its uncensored version was great and all.
BUT, what would have been cool was to release some prototypes (like the Banjo ones) and especially Conker 64.
You REALLY should release some of these.
My favorite Rare/Microsoft is Pipsy the yellow mouse, along with her boyfriend Pipdy the green mouse in Mouseland.

Conker's Bad Fur Day had fantastic humor and a super multiplayer mode but I think the single player campaign was too linear and too short and after replaying it I think it's not even a good platformer because it has some issues however I have fond memories when I think about it. I wonder how Twelve Tales would have turned out because it looks very promising.

This game looked almost finished it's a shame they decided to change it. Don't get me wrong I love bad fur day but I would love to see this game be released as well it looked fun and cute. No graphical update would be needed I just want to see the original vision
Rare should seriously consider going back and finish this project, bad fur day is a good game but its also not the game I grew up reading about in magazines and having high expections of, this game could be just as good bad fur day if not even better.

Really saddening to see what Twelve Tales was shaping up to be. From the look of it, that could have been one platformer I'd have very fond memories of had it come out in my day - so much that it could have been the Crash Bandicoot that drew me to the Nintendo 64 rather than the PlayStation. Alas...

While I adored Conker's BFD, but I have to admit you ruined Conker. If you wanted a mature game, you should have create a new character (like a rabbit to parody Bugs Bunny or a fox to parody Fox McCloud, for example, you hadn't those animals in Diddy Kong Racing, they would be totally new), but not turning an inocent cute adorable loveable squirrel into a drunk violent sarcastic irresponsable squirrel. Your choice may have been good in that time, but not for the future of the character. Conker will never be featured again in Diddy Kong Racing in any nintendo console (DKR without Conker is not the same), it'll never be also featured in Smash Bros (if BK chances are nearly 0%, Conker are certainly zero). cause Nintendo will avoid having a character associated with toilet humour in her games
Did you forget that Nintendo has founded Bayonetta 2. That game is pretty violent and Bayonetta herself is somehow slutty.
FINALLY, we get to see footage from Rare themselves. Allow me to say those of you up there at Rare, if there is still a build of this game lying around, I would LOVE to get a chance to play this!
Its not something you would have to spend much money on to get out the door since it already exist. Just putting a nice polish on it and throw it up on the Xbox Live store, I would buy this in a second!

As much as I loved Bad a Fur Day growing up, seeing this really makes me wish they had released Twelve Tales instead. BFD played out more like a linear movie and, for all it did extremely well, it never really felt like an actual "platformer" in some ways. Especially now, seeing all the things they ended up taking out. A real shame...

Well, it's a console that is no longer produced and has no games produced for anymore, so I don't think Microsoft really cares. Microsoft also doesn't care much for the portable gaming market, which is also why Rare was allowed to create games for Nintendo's handhelds.
This is a yt channel. For example, you CAN say Minecraft without licensing, AND the game isn't copyrighted by Nintendo, so yeah.
This got canceled because it was too similar to Banjo Kazooie and too cute. Bad Fur Day was OK, but I'd still prefer getting this game. In Fact, I would've gotten both Banjo Kazooie and Twelve tales I wouldn't care similar they both made by the same company, as long as they are both fun to play I wouldn't complain. Plus(Beta Fact) Twelve Tales was already in development way before Banjo-Kazooie. Twelve Tales was(origin title 'Conker Quest')intended for N64 while Banjo-Kazooie was(origin title 'Project Dream')intended for SNES. if you think about enough "IT'S NOT FARE".
By this video showing these betas/demos/prototypes in high resolution (meaning that these videos were recorded recently) we can absolutely tell that they still really got all of these roms safe and sound. I recognised almost all the video game scenes seen from early VHS footages and photos from magazines. It would be amazing if those roms leaked. Unfortunately I think they can't release them officially because of the logos/trademarks and other copyright material of Nintendo and other producers/artists. So a leak would be the only way of getting us to play these prototypes.

Super Lucky's Tale is probably the closest thing that we'll get to this game.
I hope one day they make a full version of this totally reuse everything here but fully remastered and very beautiful adventure another idea have conker a playable skin in different outfits n such for defiance yes tons of people still play that awesome game have it where he does escape that tediz world and ends up on a votan earth in the future please bring him and krystal fox back it would be greatly appreciated by the goodhearted fans who miss conker n krystal so much, and if the tediz do come over they are outgunned outsmarted and outdated hehehe compared to the grid

As much as I would've preferred to play Twelve Tales. Bad Fur Day was a much smarter decision overall. Rare did need to keep the diverse library going and having Twelve Tales probably wouldn't have done well compared to Bad Fur Day in terms of their audience that have been with Rare since the late 80's to early 90's.
That being said I wish this was out on a rom or something :/
Young Conker is terrifying. The fake one, most of all. He has a terrifying face and body. Real young Conker, is terrifying because of the realistic design.

you know you could make a sequel using stuff from this called memory lane where conker visits a place from his past he shared with berri and finds the place totaled so he sets out on a quest to fix memory lane while evading dangers now and forgotten enemies filled twist and turns around the gameplay sort of like you crashed conker bad fur day 2 with 12 tails

Wow! I love these Rare Revealed videos. I've kind of been a Rare fan boy ever since I was little and realized that people actually made video games and that games didn't just appear out of nowhere. Seeing the kind of planning process that goes into things like this is really interesting to me.
Seeing this early beta footage is really fun too. I'm sure at least someone at Rare is aware of how much money people have offered for Twelve Tales-related things. This video is like dangling the game itself in front of them and giggling.
Not only would I have seen a bigger potential with Conker’s Quest sales whise, I also think it would have added something great to the N64 era and gaming in general, if we talk about feminism.
Rareware did something great with both Conker’s Quest and Dinosaur Planet.
Those games weren’t the typical “women are inferiour to men” or “let the guy save the princess or his girlfriend”. In these games, the female counterparts would have their own play styles, they would supplement with. Berri would add for more strategic gameplay by using assets from the environment to assist her, and Krystal would add for more stealthy attributes.
But no, those games had to be cancelled.
“Conker’s bad fur day” objectifies women and use them as sex symbols and Starfox Adventures used the basic “Let the guy save his love interest” formula instead of giving us the entire character campaign built around Krystal.
I’m not saying, that Bad fur day is a bad game, but it’s a huge contrast to Twelve Tales, and I’m really sad about what values it flushed away.

What happened to Berri at 2:30, why is she pink all of a sudden? I can tell the creators were experimenting with her appearance frequently. One minute she's all brown, then she's grey with blonde hair, like her final design from Bad Fur Day, and then she's pink with blonde hair.
A new mature Conker game will be a good move -- there been so many new movies/tv since Bad Fur Day to parody.

this game could've been finished while BFD showed Conker descending into grief while growing up as he faced hard times (or it could've been an alternate reality).
A *Rare* Look At Twelve Tales, what you did there, I see it. All kidding aside, this looks like it would've been a fun game, while Bad Fur Day is a great comedic game, Twelve Tales likely would have had better gameplay. Maybe they could've released Twelve Tales, then Bad Fur Day then Twelve More Tales and retconned Bad Fur Day to being all just a dream? I dunno. And if they wanted to add a little edge to it they could've gone the Banjo-Kazooie route.
This looks like it would actually have replay value, unlike BFD.
I always considered this game to be the "Young Conker" game. That's about to change. Just think how much better this would be instead of that abomination they're going to release.
