Thank you for going through how to prepare backing I just took one to my long armer and told him I did not know so he was nice enough to do it but now I can do it next time
I’ve been subscribed for about a month now, and have really enjoyed all the information in the videos. You and your mom explain things plainly and simply. I’m not a quilter - yet - but I plan on starting as soon as I finish the other projects I’m working on. I do have a question, though. How do you store quilts long-term? I would like to make each of my 8 grandchildren a quilt for high school graduation, but the oldest one still has 8 years to go! I have no clue how long each quilt will take, so I’d like to get started as soon as possible. Thank you for such awesome and inspiring videos!
Another informative video, Fran. I usually select my backing from a coordinating color in the "focus" fabric too. I also agree with you about using at least a textured fabric if I don't use a print for the back.
I watch as many of your videos as I can and have a few years to catch up! I always find that in giving the detail you go through in choice of fabrics is teaching me so much about coordinating fabrics and working with colours. At first, I think, I don't need to know the top fabrics but yes, I learn something new every time! It really is an art to do this effectively and I'm slowly learning 😊
Thank you Fran, an excellent video on how to choose quilt backing. Your explanations are always so understandable. You are a great teacher and your sweet personality comes through on each video!
Very timely video as I have two lap size tops I have to prepare for the long armer by Saturday! This is really helpful and much easier than what I was planning on doing. Thanks so much❤
Hello Fran great show today. I'm a visual learner for the most part, I can follow a pattern but I have difficulties on some of the instructions. I learn so much easier seeing it done as you showed today. I'm wondering if you can do a show showing how to cut a twin size backing? As I said I'm a visual learner. When I make quilts from fabric Cafe I like to make them in the twin size. But so far I haven't completed a twin size quilt yet. So I really would like to see a visual on how to cut the fabric for that size. Before I cut the backing on the quilt I'm going to be working on very soon. Thanks for the time in making this video. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos from fabric Cafe.❤
Thanks for the helpful information. My grandma always used a solid for the backings which was great to see the hand quilting done! I like using a coordinating fabric preferably from the same line and usually it’s the focus fabric. Do you ever worry about lining up the design if it’s somewhat directional on the back? I made a horse themed quilt with a panel for a gift, and the backing had directional horses. My quilter somehow turned my backing so the horses were on their sides when you held the quilt upright! Oh well!
Oh no! That is an issue. One of the things we do before sending our quilts to the quilter, we place a safety pin at the top of the backing piece. This way she knows what is the top. Fran
Hi Trudy! Thank you so much. Not sure if we have the exact type of pattern, but you may find something similar browsing through our kits and fabric by the yard.
Sorry if this has already been addressed (I did look through the comments), once you have sewn your 1/2" seam, do you press the seam open or to one side? I am fairly new to quilting and just took a class featuring the Bitty Bungalow quilt and forgot to ask. I was hoping you would mention it in this video. Did I miss it? I did enjoy the video and learned a few new things. Thank you for sharing your gift! I really love the 3-yard quilt concept. Deceptively simple, yet many gorgeous patterns.
Hello! When it comes to pressing your seams, it is usually up to personal preference. Pressing to one side or pressing open will both work. We prefer to press our seams open so that everything lays a little flatter. Hope that helps! 🥰
This was a great video. I am a visual learner so seeing it done makes it so much easier. I see you have my favourite top on for this video lol. Just love love love it 😊
I try to match backing, but I try to use what I have in my stash as I buy 108s when on sale. Sometimes, it is cool to flip the quilt and see an unexpected backing, especially on kids quilts.
I was searching the internet over the weekend and I came across Flower Power - your fabric line from Blank Quilting - love it. Where can it be purchased and pattern 2 Flower Power doesn't say whether you need FQ or 1/4 yd fabrics - does that mean it should be 1/4 yds?
YAY!!! Yes, my new collection from Blank Quilting just became available. I'm so happy to hear that you like it! Keep watching our channel, we have a special episode coming up! Flower Power Quilt #2, as shown on BlankQuilting.com, has all the materials requirements listed in the pattern and the pattern is a FREE download. Thank you! Fran
Hi Deb! I usually don't worry too much about matching the fabric pattern. I find that it all blends together in the end. If this is a preference, you certainly can spend the extra time and match it up. Fran
@@FabricCafe thank you Fran..I see what you mean,. Sometimes lack of matching screams out and other times it just shrugs it's shoulders. Have a great day!! deb
We use 3 yards of 44"/45" wide fabric. Be sure to check out the free instructions for the lap-sized backing on our Free Goodies tab at FabricCafe.com. Fran
Enjoyed watching, learned a lot, thanks for sharing 😀
Pretty fabrics
Great video and tips ❤ from Canada

Great! We love our Longarmer friends. They are always so helpful 😊
I love the shirt you are wearing today!
Thanks! Fran
I learned so much…I will definitely be checking the panel as a background too,
Very good ideas. I'm always learning! Thank you for printing this info for us, and free!
Fran, Your mom is really correct. You have a wonderful gift of matching fabrics Thanks
Your demonstration of selecting backing fabrics was great. I especially appreciated the demonstration of cutting the backing. Thanks, Fran.
Let's hear it for the girl !!!! You are a great teacher Fran. I always learn something new from your videos. Thank you.🥰

Very helpful to see how you folded and pieced the backing! Thank you🎉😊

I always consider how the binding will look against the backing. Thanks, Fran; I love all your videos!
This was sooo helpful. Selecting a backing fabric can be frustrating. Great video, Fran. Thank you for the information 😊👍💕

Thank you! great tutorial.
Thank you for the backing cutting tips Fran. I always enjoy your fabric enthusiasm too! ❤
Thanks Fran! Best tutorial i have seen on cutting fabric for the backing! Great job explaining!
You are so welcome!
Awesome video, Fran. Your smiling face always makes my day!
Ya did it again Fran out of the ballpark!!!!😊
I generally piece my backing to make it interesting and also to use up remaining fabric from quilt top.
Thank you Fran. This newbie needs all the information
Wow all the quilts are beautiful Fran. Can’t wait to use your tips for my next project 😊
I love your kit with all the blue batik😂
Thank you Fran! Excellent information on backing😍
This is a huge help for me. I’m always struggling with my backing. Thank you!

I consider the focus fabric as well as the binding. I also have used minky as a backing. It can be tricky but I do my own longarm quilting.
I mostly use a coordinating flannel to back my quilts as I live in Wisconsin and it just adds that extra snuggly warmth factor.
Great teacher, I learned a lot 🤩🤩
Just got three of your books - having a blast with them. I'll be keeping an eye (or two) out for the ones I don't yet have!
Thank you, I needed this info today.
This is great, very helpful!
This is a terrific video. I saw "other" colors in the focus fabric just pop out when the backing was placed on the fabric. Thank you.
Love them all as usual!
Thank you for your ideas and suggestions, Fran. ❤

I also use a pieced backing sometimes, of course with 3 yd quilts you won't have a lot left to piece but I do with other quilts.
This was very helpful. Thank you!

I love your blouse! It is beautiful! Do you stock cotton fabric with the similar kind of pattern?

Wow! Thank you for replying so quickly! I didn't expect that! I will press my backing seam flat then.
Of course! Good luck! We're always here to help any way we can 🥰
I almost always use flannel for my backing

Here from Maine!
Hi Sara!
If I have a lot of white in a quilt I usually use a white backing. I hesitate to use a darker colour or bold print which may shadow through.
I usually go for a large scale expressive print on the back, since it won't be cut up.
Love that! Fran
How do you find the fabric for the original Ashford Square quilt that the “ mystery hands” were holding up? Blue, white and lilac in color? Thank you
Oh my...that fabric has sold out and is no longer available. It's a bummer too. It's GORGEOUS! (Mystery hands, hahahaha!) Fran

Beautiful quilts. Would like to see close ups of the backing fabrics to see their details. Not a fan of the background music as I find it distracting.
I wish I had the software program to look at my fabric choices in the designs…
We have some new projects on the horizon. Stay tuned! Fran
How many yards for the backing on a lapquilt? Ty.
We use 3 yards of 44"/45" wide fabric. Be sure to check out the free instructions for the lap-sized backing on our Free Goodies tab at FabricCafe.com. Fran
🤍💛🤍
I find music playing in background distracting. Is this some new?
I agree. The music is not necessary.
Thanks for letting us know. Fran
