This is strange. I had an MRI done 2 weeks ago. It was of my left hand, I knew a previous injury would result in Surgery and I wasn’t happy about that. If you have had an MRI you know how the noise is even with headphones on. I use diversionary thoughts to be able to tolerate it. I was - in my mind- designing a quilt with Purple and green fabrics. I am not a green person, but the lighter brighter green looks great with any purple. Had my surgery yesterday, and I saw the you-tube from Shabby Fabrics, with the purple and green, isn’t that something!
Tammy, I want to thank you for the way you explain how to put your blocks together. It makes it easy for me to follow. You. Explain things very well. Thank you. And thank you for the pattern.
I have this layer cake and was just looking for a "perfect pattern" to cut into it. Thank you so much for the beautiful and quick free pattern and love the little pressing tutorial.
Tammy I so love to watch your tutorials I always learn so much by watching you. Thank you so much! Sometimes it’s just the little things of where to put a pin that can mean the perfect quilt or an okay one.
Happy that you enjoyed this tutorial and that it can help you! We strive to give you the best tutorials for you to learn and be successful! We appreciate your support and comment! - Abby
Since my youngest daughter's favorite colors are shades of purple, I have ordered this kit and backing. Of course, she has to wait for me to complete several other quilts for family members first. It'll be a great Christmas present. Thank you for all of the extra tips and tricks. Take care, many blessings to you and your families. Happy Easter.✝
That is awesome! She will love it and happy that you love it as well! You are welcome and we appreciate your support and comment! Have fun and Happy Easter! 🐰🐥 - Abby
This is a gorgeous collection. Love purple and green together. Plus, I have to say, Robert Kaufman was a favorite vender of mine when I was selling custom bedding and window coverings many moons ago (decades) at a design center in Orange County, CA. I'm so glad I watched this video. It's was the colors that drew my attention and I'm not even a quilter. I'm a beader and a gardener. But, I've saved my late husband's Harley Davidson and other novelty T-shirts for a quilt top. (Lost him Sept. 26, 2023) Obviously, the pattern won't be anything like the Camille collection squares, using jersey knit with large graphics, but I learned some important sewing techniques for quilting from watching. I was quite the seamstress in my teens and early adult years. Haven't sewn since my 30's other than minor mending and alterations. I'm really looking forward to sewing again now that I'm closer to 70 than 60. I may have to invest in a couple tools you featured. BTW, I think it would be impossible for me to put the Camille patterns together randomly. Ha ha! Thanks for the tutorial.
Happy that this tutorial can help you! We appreciate your support and that is such a great idea! You will have a lot of fun! Thanks for your comment! - Abby
I have never used the pressed open seam method in my quilts. You have just shown me some valuable information, particularly if you are making a scrappy quilt. I have saved in my stash, two flannel layer cakes, designed by Shabby Fabrics some years back, that I could never decide how I would like to use them. I think they would be lovely in this scrappy pattern. Hi to Jen.
Thank you for the very helpful tips and tricks! Even with years of experience, I encounter frustrating problems with construction but your instruction may help alleviate them in the future. Excellent tutorial!
I just received my fabric today. I love it so much. It is so very pretty. My goodness, I am in love with this fabric. Thank you Shabby Fabrics for offering this line.
I just discovered you and I need to say Thank You! As I am trying to learn & get started, you are the only one I've found that explains seam pressing and why. I will be a subscriber and watch lots more of you in the future. Thank you
Thank you Tammy for the perfect pattern. Just what I was looking for. I have a layer cake, Dance of the Dragonfly, that I want to use. My daughter loves dragonflies. The fabric you used is beautiful. As always you explain everything perfectly!
You are welcome! Happy that you enjoyed this tutorial and love this project! That sounds like those fabrics will be beautiful on this quilt! We appreciate your support and comment! - Abby
You are such a good instructor - very concise and straight to the point. Thank you for your expertise! I'm going to make this one! I love this fabric too.
What a beautiful spring quilt! Thanks for the great video, especially the pressing and pinning tips Tammy. This will be my go to video as I'm getting ready to start my first quilt. At the beginning you mentioned cutting a stripe material. Have you done any videos working with stripes / plaids? I tend to stay away from them as I can't get the design lined up evenly for cutting.
Happy that you love this quilt! It is gorgeous and we appreciate your support! While we do not have any tutorials for working with stripes and plaids to color your quilt, we do tend to find ourselves using them in patchwork style projects and as borders in our quilts. You can view some of the detailed shots in our Sweet Beginnings quilt and see where some of our checked fabrics do not line up: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p126258 Hope this can help you and thanks for your comment! - Abby
Great tutorial! I'm a beginning sewer and am new to quilting, so I really appreciate your extra tips and tricks, and good camera work. You have a lovely teaching style, Tammy. Thank you!
Super... First time that I saw your show and it was just awesome the pressing suggestions were fantastic I can see where your quilts just look perfect thanks so much I really appreciate what you're doing
You are welcome! Such a fun and beautiful quilt to make! That sounds awesome, feel free to share project photos with us! Thanks for your comment! - Abby
No Donna, I only purchased the one kit size, along with the backing, then I purchased a charm pack to make a runner, then I purchased yardage to cut up into 5 inch squares to make for a border and the yardage will be borders. I ordered more of the color of backing to make sure I had enough for the backing.@@donnaerickson5701
@@ShabbyFabrics I have it in work right now. It is coming together very quickly. Reading the instructions is key to it all, especially the measure twice, cut once (OOPS).
Hi Patricia - Tammy chooses to pin the end of smaller patchwork pieces because that's where she finds her fabric shifting when she takes her patchwork to the sewing machine. You can definitely add more pins before sewing, if you'd like! -Michelle
We're glad this quilt inspires you! The pattern (www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/689) doesn't give the yardage for the quilt top, so you can just use 42 ten inch squares, or since 1 layer cake is approximately 2.8 yards of fabric, you can do your fabric estimations on that number. This layer cake in the Camille collection contained 18 fabrics, and each layercake has 42 squares. Divided evenly, that's approximately 2.3 ten-inch squares per fabric. Hope this helps! -Michelle
Because it sold out, I'd like to make this using yardage. Am I understanding that there is 42, 10" squares in the layer cake? Thank you for sharing! this is a beautiful quilt, and great instructions!
Hi Lindalee - We're so glad this project inspires you! Yes, most layer cakes contain 42 of the 10" squares. You can shop our current selection here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/c443/fabrics/precut-fabrics/layer-cake-10-squares -Michelle
You can make it bigger. It would be up to you to adjust the measurements in this kit. Happy that you love this quilt! It is beautiful for sure and thanks for your comment! - Abby
Yes, that is correct. You can find these measurements on the Free Download, available here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/689 -Michelle
Would this pattern work with fat quarters? I have about a dozen Halloween prints. Plus a 1 yard single cut for boarders and or binding. I'm looking for a pattern for a lap quilt to uses my fat quarters.
You should be able to use this pattern with FQs. Be sure to check out the Free Download here to check the measurements: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/689 -Michelle
I don’t have this fabric, but I have some green and purple fabrics in my stash. Sooo, you only used 10 of the 10x10 squares to do this whole quilt? Other than backing and binding?
Hi Grace - I believe Tammy only used 10 squares for demonstration purposes for this tutorial. This quilt top does require the use of all (or most of) the 42 squares that you'll find in a Layer Cake. Hope this makes sense! -Michelle
Hi Carlin - You'll need to do the math for that, depending on your anticipated finished size and factoring in if you'll be adding borders. Each of these finished blocks measures approximately 8" x 8". Hope this helps! -Michelle
Try this link to our website: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/689/how-to-make-a-ten-square-scramble-quilt-block Hope this can help! Thanks for your comment! - Abby
On seams, why not just press all of them open? That way you know each color behind it will have the same color as in front of it. Does that make sense or does it matter to fold them one way or the other
Hi Michelle - You can certainly press open if you prefer. Tammy was demonstrating how to nest your seams. This older blog post by The Crafty Quilter does offer some detailed insight on the difference between pressing open & pressing to the side: thecraftyquilter.com/2014/01/lets-talk-pressing-seams-open-vs-to-the-side/ You can certainly choose to press as your preferred method for your projects! Hi Jenny - We wouldn't consider this project "jelly roll friendly" as it does require some 4.5" squares - you would need to do some extra piecing & measuring to make it work with a jelly roll: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/689 -Michelle

Hi Carlin - You'll need to do the math for that, depending on your anticipated finished size and factoring in if you'll be adding borders. Each of these finished blocks measures approximately 8" x 8". Hope this helps! -Michelle

Hope this helps! -Michelle

Could you use a jelly roll?
Hi Jenny - We wouldn't consider this project "jelly roll friendly" as it does require some 4.5" squares - you would need to do some extra piecing & measuring to make it work with a jelly roll: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/689 -Michelle
