Best review I have seen. I saw this movie back in the 70s and absolutely loved it. The mistake most people and reviewers make is that they view the movie based on today's standards. You can't do that. You have to put yourself back in the period it was created. You can't listen to Louis Armstrong's hot fives and hot seven recordings from the 1920s based on today's standards. You have to put yourself back to the time the recordings were made to fully appreciate what was created. Thanks again for a fantastic review.
Thank you guys so much for being here and doing what you do. You two have introduced me to so much and broadened my horizons so far. This was just the kind of review and recommendation that i needed after a really dismal time. You guys are the best and I'm so very glad I'm a fan.
Folks often overlook Ruth Gordon's success as a screenwriter (and plywright, and poet). She (and much younger husband, Garson Kanin) wrote classic Tracy/Hepburn flix"Pat & Mike" and "Adam's Rib". I'd suggest you review that pioneering feminist flick. Thanks for this review. So funny.
The Graduate - 1967, Harold & Maude - 1971. I heard of this movie all my life but I had no idea what it was about and I'm glad I didn't. I never dreamed they would have any kind of romantic relationship! The movie was delightful. It is my humble opinion that Ruth Gordon is the only woman who could have pulled this role off. She is soooo lovable! Maude gave Harold permission to risk letting himself love. "Go and love some more" was a fantastic line and delivered by her, it was a loving order.
Quite awesome to see people still enjoy this amazing film. I first watched when I was quite young (15) and enjoy it just a bit more every time I view it. It's a lovely film exploring some rather deep and dark emotions with wonderful bits of whimsy and some of the most side-splitting moments of comedy ever filmed all set to Stevens's beautiful soundtrack. Thanks for turning more folks on to it fellas. Everyone who loves cinema should see it and if doesn't illicit an emotion, you might want to check your pulse
While not my favourite Hal Ashby film (that is still Being There) Harold and Maude is a wonderful film made for all those ‘eccentrics’ of the world. Never thought you’d review an Ashby film but glad you did. Great review.
Cheers guys. A grand review for an excellent film. I saw Harold & Maude (1971) followed by A New Leaf (1971) as a double feature decades ago. These films really left their mark on me. They remain among my all-time favourites.
Love all the old iconic Bay Area CA places in this movie. When I saw this around 1980 in an art theater in Oakland, everyone cheered when Harold said "they're going to draft me" and Maude says "Don't go!" Where they were sitting side by side was Emeryville and the water was SF bay, people used to sneak out onto the mudflats and make really great sculptures.
Thank you for this review! So glad you both loved this the way you did. There are definitely hidden gems in earlier films that younger film buffs truly need to experience ❤️
When I was about 7yrs old in 1980 I remember trying to figure out if that was his girlfriend.. I've been into movies as long as I can remember and I still cry at the end like the first time I watched it even when you talked about it lol
This is one of my father's favorite movies. It was watched so many times in our house growing up we wore out the VHS tape. Such a hilarious film that not many people have ever seen or even heard of . Hopefully with you're review more people will try to find and watch it . 👍
I saw this movie when I was 16 & loved it - still do. But now, I don’t know if I love the movie quite as much as your review. Totally enjoyed the enthusiasm of your positive review. Thank you!
wow sirs! this is a great review as always! But I had no idea of this movie at all - previously when hearing the title I would just picture "Benny & joon" which I have seen.........thank you both for bringing this to my attention, I must watch immediately!
This film is simply beautiful. I was so happy to see that you were reviewing this movie, I knew you would give it a proper description. For any film lover, I highly recommend watching this classic. EDIT: Oh, and Cat Stevens RULES!
Another great review and I have two films to suggest for you guys, if you haven’t seen them - it’s worth looking into. It’s called “Charly” from 1968 with Cliff Robertson and the other is “Soylent Green” with Charlton Heston.
Great review of a magnificent film Gary and Iain. Just stumbled across your channel, and am addicted. Thank you. Other reviews I would love to see would be Duel, and Silent Running. A brilliant sci fi movie with Bruce Dern. Cheers guys.
I didn’t know if you guys were still doing reviews and here you are! I caught your review of once were warriors , would be cool to see you do review of what becomes of the broken-hearted, bout Jakes redemption
Indeed a unique film, is well made, well cast and performed, and has things to say adding also symbolism to many scenes, movies like this are not made often nowadays, probably this movie would be criticized today for the way it shows and depicts some of the themes and concepts.
This film’s fucking great. Funny, moving and endearingly weird. Only over Hal Ashby film I’ve seen is Being There, which I also loved, so I gotta check out the rest of his filmography sometime
Loved this when I saw it as a kid on British TV sometime in the 70s. I acquired a new way of looking at the world shortly afterwards. It's post-Graduate by the way, by about 4 years. For anyone looking for more of the amazing Bud Cort, check out an absolutely mind-blowing 90s movie called Brain Dead, with both Bills Pullman and Paxton. It is simply astounding. Be sure to go in knowing nothing though.
I've been searching for this movie for most of my life. A friend's dad told me about a film where Harold faked killing himself and was told Not Funny Harold.
The concentration camp mark on Maude's arm, how no characters ever mention it, and how it has almost no importance in this story is like with the scary German guy in The Monster Squad.
Come out to San Francisco and I can show you guys those steps! I live right by the beach and they are just a short walk away from my lady and mine’s place!
what the fuck? Harold faked his suicides? this is a completely new reading to me. I thought he successfully killed himself many times, but could not die. in reality he wanted to die, but could not do it. the movie tells his feelings rather than his actions.

:) thanks for taking the time to make this review.
Harold and Maude is a master piece.
I was born in that Hospital in September of 1971. And yes this is my favorite movie:)
Thank you guys so much for being here and doing what you do. You two have introduced me to so much and broadened my horizons so far. This was just the kind of review and recommendation that i needed after a really dismal time.
You guys are the best and I'm so very glad I'm a fan.
My favorite film reviewers
@@amansizedduck Mine as well.

Thanks for this review. So funny.
I saw this in college in film class and the zoom in on the priest will forever be one of the funniest scenes ever.
Harold and Maude came out in 1971. The Graduate came out in 1967.

I love how Gary and Ian review a wide variety of films from different eras. Hopefully one day they’ll do Harry and Tonto.
Maude is the friend we wish we had

Thank you Gary and Iain for reviewing this subtle and beautiful film. ☺️
Love Ruth Gordon RIP. She was brilliant in Rosemary’s Baby. 😊
She was brilliant in Harold and Maude also
I love it when you guys review my favorites, which you do often, and always love the things that I love about them!
While not my favourite Hal Ashby film (that is still Being There) Harold and Maude is a wonderful film made for all those ‘eccentrics’ of the world.
Never thought you’d review an Ashby film but glad you did. Great review.
Have you seen his first film, "The Landlord", starring Beau Bridges? Underrated, but sadly relevant today.
One of my top 10 of all time. I'm so glad you guys love it.

My favourite film of all time. I was lucky enough to visit some of the filming locations in San Francisco a few years ago
Thank you for this review! So glad you both loved this the way you did. There are definitely hidden gems in earlier films that younger film buffs truly need to experience ❤️
While true, this ain’t one of them; it’s very well known among all ages of cinephiles
When I was about 7yrs old in 1980 I remember trying to figure out if that was his girlfriend.. I've been into movies as long as I can remember and I still cry at the end like the first time I watched it even when you talked about it lol
Ruth Gordon's Maude is the OG Manic Pixie Dream Girl.
This is one of my father's favorite movies. It was watched so many times in our house growing up we wore out the VHS tape. Such a hilarious film that not many people have ever seen or even heard of . Hopefully with you're review more people will try to find and watch it . 👍
I was about to go to bed...then this treat! Thanks!!
wonderful film, so glad u guys loved it too
I only know this movie by name, it's mentioned in "There's something about Marry"
I was hoping you guys would have done this one and you know what thank you!
From Terrifier to this… love this channel and it’s really maturing in tastes.
I remember this film
I so appreciate your enthusiasm and thoughtfulness about this incredible movie full of philosophical lessons. May we all live freely, fully.❤
One of those hidden gem films! Worth a watch!
I saw this movie when I was 16 & loved it - still do. But now, I don’t know if I love the movie quite as much as your review. Totally enjoyed the enthusiasm of your positive review. Thank you!
Awesome review as always guys! 👊👊 This film is always a regular at the Prince Charles and BFI.

Maude, being a Holocaust survivor, lives in a train car.
omG. i never thought of that. gives me one more reason to cry.
For what it's worth......the world 🌎 is a better place because you two create these reviews. Thank you brothers. 😎
Another great review and I have two films to suggest for you guys, if you haven’t seen them - it’s worth looking into. It’s called “Charly” from 1968 with Cliff Robertson and the other is “Soylent Green” with Charlton Heston.
I just watched this movie. It was so WONDERFUL! I am glad you enjoyed it too.
Great review of a superb movie. The Last Detail is definitely review worthy. As is Keith Gordon's The Chocolate War, which also features Bud Court.
Great review, fellas
Great review of a magnificent film Gary and Iain. Just stumbled across your channel, and am addicted. Thank you. Other reviews I would love to see would be Duel, and Silent Running. A brilliant sci fi movie with Bruce Dern. Cheers guys.
This is an amazing film.

Harold has to be related to the food review brah
Funny how the supposed critics usually come around when the average person can see the brilliance in a lot of movies like this one. Fun review guys.
My grandpa showed me this, he loved the jaguar hearse
thanks for the great review. It was a wonderful film!
Never heard of this movie before and really enjoyed the review 👊👊
Harolds mother is a complete narcissist. Harold knew she did not love him, kids know these things. He had to meet Maude to know what love is.
Indeed a unique film, is well made, well cast and performed, and has things to say adding also symbolism to many scenes, movies like this are not made often nowadays, probably this movie would be criticized today for the way it shows and depicts some of the themes and concepts.

great talk on a great movie. thanks
My absolutely favorite movie! I've seen it at least 30 times!
The concentration camp mark on Maude's arm, how no characters ever mention it, and how it has almost no importance in this story is like with the scary German guy in The Monster Squad.
but as an audiance member's seeing little details like that makes it more powerful than if it was shoved down our throats
Absolute masterpiece, please do Brewster Mcloud with Bud Cort cult movie as well.
shelf life!
Come out to San Francisco and I can show you guys those steps! I live right by the beach and they are just a short walk away from my lady and mine’s place!
Hello neighbor!
You guys are ready probably know but she was in an episode of Columbo Try and Catch me
RUTH PLAYS THE 20TH CENTURY. LA BELLE EPOCHE, WWI 20'S AND 30'S, WWII, THE DEAD 50'S THE EVIL MAD 60'S. ETC.
Love this film 😍
Such a great dark comedy
I remember seeing this movie on TV when I was younger. Very weird
This was one of my childhood friends favorite movies and he would watch it all the time for some reason
It's a funny movie
Beautiful, heartbreaking, and hilarious. The film's pretty good too. 😉
This movie really makes you just want to reflect and enjoy life to its limits.
It's a shame it was shot on that really grimy looking film stock that was widely used in the late 60s/early 70s.
❤love this film and Cat.
I would like to watch movies with you. sure is fun. keep it up
Buncha goddang hippy bullmess I tellsya!
