From 27:30 "I hate to think of what Cole had to do as a child to survive." Have watched this movie at least half a dozen times and this never occurred to me. It's another layer to digest. Great movie, great review. Subscribed.

Great review guys, and well done wrapping your heads around this stellar slice of insanity.
Twelve Monkeys shines best through repeat viewings as you notice and come to realise how masterful the warped and intertwined story plays out on the screen, and in your mind.
    Awesome.

I have to admit that, back in 96 when i got this on VHS - i was around 15/16 at he time - i never fully understood this movie, at least thats what i remember. but watching your deep dive review was amazing, it made me realize that i remembered only a quarter of the movie at all. definitly have to re-watch it with some fresh old eyes and a broadend mindset! Thanks for the video, i love what you do. :)

I can not believe I never realized that "12 Monkeys" was a Terry Gilliam movie. I will say that I have always loved this movie. I never really knew if Bruce Willis was actually from the future or if he really was just in the mental hospital. Even at the end, when the actual virus is released by the scientist...did that really happen? Did it? By that point you honestly have no idea if this means that the story's premise is real...or if he's honestly totally let go of reality...

As I saw this movie as a kid I saw Cole's mission as successful because the woman scientist says "I'm in insurance" because she's gonna kill that guy

Hmmm, or maybe Cole was used to actually create the events causing release of the virus, and the "scientist" arrived after his death to insure its carried out. Only then does the movie make sense logically.

She might, however she knows that the virus was already released in Philadelphia. I think it's more likely that she aims to extract as much information as possible from him to stop him from releasing it in the first place. I think that's why she says that humanity will destroy itself, I think she's trying to use her womanly nature to get on the good side of a guy who probably hasn't been laid in a long time to spill his full life story so that they can shift the timeline for good.

A great, great film. Rich with theme, amazing in its look, enthralling throughout. The whole cast is great, and while it goes without saying Pitt is great, it’s always great to see Bruce Willis in a role where he gave a shit, and really acts his ass off.
No matter what one thinks of his conduct in the last decade, what’s befallen Willis recently is fucking horrible. He was a childhood favourite and I’ll always have respect for him

how the bootstrap paradox works narratively : Brad Pitt originally came up with the idea himself, but as soon as they sent people back talking about the virus the source of the virus became the time travellers creating a loop that bruce willis is stuck in. That's the paradox of the bootstrap is that the macguffin has no source it just 'existis'

40:12 It's white cop and black cop again! Thanks for pointing out an element I never noticed before. For me this is Gilliam's last great film, and it's really up there. (Dr Parnassus might have been up there, except the edit was rushed and Ledger was miscast.) Gilliam's first, Jabberwocky, is also great and doesn't get the attention it deserves. BTW, the 12 Monkeys TV series was surprisingly good, recommended if you want a longer watch.

  • @wendellwiggins3776

NICE EXUBERANT COMMENTARY by serious FANS of Terry like myself! His last two films are the only ones I didn't fully comprehend, NEVERTHELESS, 12 MONKEYS is PERFECTION. ALL the INTENTIONAL ambiguities you all point out are INDEED RESOLVED!!! Major things to remember throughout: The FUTURE has ALREADY happened which is provided in the opening scene which COLE repeatedly says throughout the film. WE the audience are DR. RAILY trying to understand as the confusion & questions are cleverly and brilliantly presented. The dynamics between her and COLE's love story is wonderfully paced as it builds. The way we are made to wonder whether he is actually insane or not throughout is incredible. It's aLL like a PUZZLE that pulls together piece by piece. THERE ARE NO WASTED SCENES or pieces that are not clues towards putting together the story. It's an absolute amazingly scripted mystery with a profound realization that's only completely revealed at the very end. It's both a sad but satisfying finale because Cole does succeed plus we were already notified of his impending death. NARRATIVELY & VISUALLY it's probably the GREATEST TIME TRAVELING SCI-FI film ever made!

honestly I've always seen the ending as a bad ending, as in the lady is on the plane to ensure the virus gets spread so society will collapse and she (and the other scientists) will be on top of what remains. in other words, she's there to ensure her own position at the top of the post-virus society. love your reviews!

lt's funny but ever since l saw the movie for the first time l thought the old lady had come back from the future for the virus sample, so to me it was not ambiguous but bittersweet given that Bruce Willis character had to pay the ultimate sacrifice in order for the future to possibly have a chance.

    • @adammuncy8475
      @adammuncy8475 3 місяці тому

The adult Bruce Willis from the fucked up future, yes. The child Bruce Willis can still be saved by altering the timeline to prevent the virus from being released in the first place, from then on we don't know that kids future any longer.

This was one of my favourite movies at one time and Terry Gilliam was also one of my favourite directors. Fisher King was a favourite movie of many of my friends. Many others had Fear and loathing as favourite. But Brazil is my absolute favourite of his, I think I have seen that too many times to be healthy almost, it is like a scarier more plausible and twisted 1984. The Lost in La Mancha documentary is also just absolutely amazing. I also heard the tv show 12 monkeys was good, but have not seen it.

I'm ashamed to say, that never found the movie that great. Maybe it's because didn't watch it at release date, but saw the ending coming almost immediately and the rest felt somewhat derivative, even though theoretically, it should had been my jam.
Tried to watch it again, and felt asleep 😂. The cinematography is great, and I do love Time Bandits and other of Gillian's films. The overall story wasn't just that unique, by the time I saw it.
