I love this movie! My fave line is from Centauri after he fixed his "car", Alex insist he's just as kid in a trailer park and Centauri replied "If that's what you think, then that's all you'll ever be!" Mike drop!

I'm voting for a 12 Episode Series titled "The Last Starfleet" with Alex's younger brother now in his late 40s and Alex's son early 20s. A big chunk of the series is them finding and gathering the potential starfighters from other planets while running from a new enemy who is hunting them down. Maybe Alex was killed or is missing, but sent one final message to his son to find his brother, as the brother is experienced enough from the arcade game but also somehow has knowledge of the whereabouts of potential recruits for building a fleet of starfighters. Yeah. Something like that. Or maybe a little less Star Wars esque as I'm proofreading my comment.

From a 13-year-old when this classic came out, the computer graphics very much like Tron blew our minds. What a great time and what a great film. As always lads top review. Did anyone notice when Alex get's the tag put on his lapel at 15.38 it was the inside board of a casio digital watch?. Death blossom baby.😛😛

Are you sure that's a good idea? Hollyweird is obsessed with THE MESSAGE, gender- and race-swapping like it's a real life "Twister" game.;) Leave almost-Classic movies alone. 'Disney will get it"!? No, no, no, a thousand times NO!

Given the mass appeal of the original script (everyday lad gets invited to save the world in a sprawling space epic), and if you consider how far CGI has evolved , there is no better candidate than this movie for a reboot in my opinion. Instead of a remote arcade machine you got the massive online world of video-gaming to work with.

You have to give it to Commander Krill. Where most villains would curse the hero, rambling about how their plan should've been foolproof, Krill figured "Oh well. We done screwed up. It was fun while it lasted" and was willing to do the honorable thing by going down with the ship, accepting his fate.

There is a line in this movie, that literally saved my life!!! That particular line is a brief chat between Alex and Centauri, after he was fixing his vehicle. Alex insists that he is just a kid in a trailer park - and Centauri said: "If that's what you think, then that's all you'll ever be!" I was watching this movie with my older daughter, who really is into all of those classic 80s sci-fi and Fantasy-stuff I grew up with as a kid. When Centauri said this in the movie, I suddenly bursted out into tears. My daughter asked me why - and I quickly replied, that I was remembering something... Why I cried? I struggle with a heavy depression since my early childhood. I don't know why, but ever since I was a child, I always felt sad and totally out of place. Lost. Since I am a father of two, it got better, but it still haunts me every now and then. And I fucking hate it! There is no romantic or cool aspect about it. I hate being so powerless and being condemned to wait for something that won't come or happen. Some people might think a depression is some kind of longing you get, while attending a sunset at the beach. No, it is not. It is a fucking freezing rain. And what takes the most power is to hide my depression, especially in front of my children. They sense that I am sad and even my younger daughter asked me, why I am such a sad man, but I try my best not to show it... But this line changed something in me. When Centauri said "If that's what you think, then that's all you'll ever be!" - I started thinking about myself and how I see myself as a part of society. Do i think that I am a depressive person? What do I want to be? Who do I want to be? I started thinking and my honest answer is - I want to be light and happy, a loving dad, a good husband, a friend and someone to rely to. Not a depressive person anymore! That changed my life!!!

I was lucky to find a paperback of this movie in a booksale and the book beautifully expounded the story. The relationship between the Rylan Ambassador and his son Xur, the frustrations of the Ko-Dan with this Rylan upstart, Centauris' desperation to get Alex to accept his "gift to be a Starfighter" and many more. But what I love is how the Rylans view other sentient species as immature, and we find out that Earth was going to become a member of the League when its inhabitants stopped fighting with each other and have matured. Also the Beta unit! He couldnt stop whining and cursing Centauri for dropping him to work in a backwater planet! The gunstars? They are antique warships and that the starfighters are relics of their violent past, that's why they are recruiting because Rylans lost the ability or "gift of doing battle". Victory or Death!

What a crazy coincidence. I am finally seeing this movie on the big screen this coming Tuesday at the Drafthouse. I always regretted I didn't see this as a kid in the 80's when it came out. I plan on kicking back and enjoying a piece of my childhood a pizza and several alcoholic beverages, lol.

Sooo, when I was a kid, I had a computer (not a console) called an Atari 800XL. One of the games I had (cassette loaded mind) was The Last Starfigher, but,it was glitched, it took ages to load, and as soon as you died, the game crashed,so it had to be reloaded if you wanted to play again…. I played this game soooo much. Cheers geezers.

Great underrated movie. So glad you guys are talking about it.
Years after this movie, Lance Guest had a small role in the CBS TV series Jericho. Sadly he really didn't get much work.
Fun Fact: Granny also played the big head alien in the original Star Trek pilot The Cage back in 1965.
And Wesley Crusher himself Will Wheaton of Star Trek The Next Generation fame was also in The Last Starfighter as the friend of Louis, Alex's little brother. Not even sure if he actually makes an appearance on screen but he's credited.

Dan O'Herlihy is a GREAT example of what a good actor who takes a role seriously can do for a part. He gave Grig real, convincing alien mannerisms and movements and sounds. He made the role more than just "a guy in a funny mask," and crafted a genuine character, a steady mentor and warm friend for Alex. Without an actor who took that part as seriously as he did in that role, the movie would have been nowhere near as good.
Note that, when I say he took the part seriously, I don't mean he wasn't funny it. Rather, he committed to bringing the role to life in a real way, instead of phoning it in because this is all ridiculous. Robert Preston did likewise, taking the role of Centauri seriously but clearly having a blast playing "The Music Man IN SPACE!"

My junior high science teacher was a pretty big nerd. He told me he'd written a sequel novel to this, which concerned the return of the petulant villain - the Revenge (or Return) of Xur, I think he said it was called. I love this film, though - my dad recorded it off the TV on vhs (how we used to rewatch all my favorite films). Good review

Seen this just the once when I was a kid. My auntie had it on VHS and, since I was a big Star Wars nut, the cover intrigued me. Had a lens, and I remember liking it but not much else.
Shame it wasn’t bigger but you know what? Be thankful it didn’t get big enough to be exploited and diluted by needless follow ups. Things are special when they’re finite. This flick will always have its integrity, and when someone discovers it, it’ll be all the more special.
As though it was made just for them, turning up when needed

  • @citizenVader

It was just a period with a unique experience in science fiction. Although there were a lot of knock-offs capitalizing on Star Wars, the imaginations of the writers back then were still bold and dared to make a stand-alone gem here and there. Enemy mine, Inner space, Flight of the navigator, The Fly, The Thing, Tron, The Abyss, Terminator, The Philadelphia Experiment, Short Circuit, Explorers, Cocoon, Close Encounters Of the third kind, Krull, and Starman to name a few.. it's hard to match again..

As much as I love the movie, and I'll catch hell for this, wouldn't mind seeing updated CGI. Yeah yeah. I wouldn't ever say that about Tron but here we are. And when the hell are the writers of Rogue One going to get that sequel off the ground?

I love this movie as well. I know we all have remake and requel fatigue (deservingly so), but I’ve said for years the two remakes that would get me in a theater seat is this and a well cast Police Academy remake. I might have to add Revenge of the Nerds to that list as well.
I always loved this movie and had no idea about some of the actors and what this movie faced during its theatrical run. Thank you for the memories and the new information about this movie. Now to go find my DVD of this and give it another rewatch!

😊Hey dudes,uh wait, Hey Mates! Watch ya'll every review, years now. I'm a Houston Texan BAP black American princess. Medically retired teacher, down South in TX's gulf coast We call them *Nice 'family style' trailer parks* Manufactured Homes. It has no negative stigma 😂 or stigmata...those homes have everything including foundations some look like the inside of a 90s yacht room 🤔I guess that IS kinda oddly rich? Right,Southern homes don't all look like Antebellum plantations from DJANGO
