    uhm. i think you forgot one significant detail: the emulsifying step. after you massage the oil onto your face, getting rid of all that sunscreen and make up, you need to add water to emulsify the oil and therefore be able to rinse it properly. you're left with a clean canvas actually, so no, your waterbased cleanser doesn't work harder. finishing off with the classic: english isn't my first language so please forgive me if there are any mistakes.

    • @OlenaBeley
      @OlenaBeley  3 роки тому +43

      If an oil cleanser contains an emulsifier/surfactant then you won’t need another cleanser afterward - the point is, one good cleanser will clean your face and you don’t need two like in the double cleanse method.

    Honestly, I believe the double cleansing system makes a lot of sense - because I have seen a lot of change in my skin since I started. Its an age-old technique used by Koreans that really does seam to work. I mean look at it, first you break down the oil based impurities with an oil cleanser and then the water-based/other impurities with a gel cleanser.
    However, while I'm pretty sure you could do the same with a single good cleanser too, I don't know how many cleansers are "good". I mean a lot of stuff is falsely advertised so you cannot be 100% sure. To me double cleansing is the safer option, but hey, each to their own :)

    I'm not sure whether you talk about pure oil or formulated cleansing oil/balm because the formulated one have emulsifier in it, so it just need water to be removed, not water-based cleanser.
    Plus, the formulated one isn't really comedogenic, but still depends on each individual.

    As someone who had severe cystic acne and was told to use an oil based double cleansing method, I would formally like to ask those people to pay my dermatologist bill! In all seriousness though, I had tried every cleansing oil under the sun (even the ones claiming to not clog your pores) and my skin kept getting even more angry and more clogged and my dermatologist finally told me my last hope was accutane. So I did take accutane. I’m nearly three years off of it, but my acne will begin coming back if I don’t use the right products on it, so I’m very grateful for finding informative videos like this with advice that works, because even post-accutane, skincare is so so important and understanding how your skin works and how it reacts to different ingredients is key to maintaining healthy, clear skin!

    • @OlenaBeley
      @OlenaBeley  3 роки тому +3

      Totally! That’s why so many people see the acne return post Accutane - because they haven’t learned how to care for their skin in the meantime. Happy to hear you’re listening to your skin! ❤️

  • @mollyclare1691

    Speaking as an MUA, double cleansing is not ALWAYS necessary for the EVERYDAY person. Day to day your normal cleanser should be enough to remove sunscreen, dirt, pollution, and SMALL amounts of makeup. However, people that wear makeup everyday and a lot of it at that, not only is a cleansing balm far more environmentally friendly than makeup wipes/micellar water and cotton rounds, but removes makeup, even stubborn waterproof eye makeup effortlessly. I have personally NEVER been able to find a water/gel based cleanser that removes makeup to the same extent, as the oil in balms breaks down makeup in seconds. If I have used a water/gel cleanser that is able to remove all makeup, it is normally very foamy and therefore very stripping/damaging to the skin over time. So after a balm to remove makeup, I tend to use a very gentle gel based cleanser after. If your skin has even 5% residue of makeup left on it, it will not absorb any further skincare products you put on your skin in the same way, and can easily result in breakouts. Your skin being clean is one of the most important steps in your routine and if you are someone who wears heavy makeup daily it is important to do so properly, and I think a double cleanse is necessary for this.

    • @joannam1284
      @joannam1284 3 роки тому +13

      I agree with this. The only people who *really* need an oil cleanser are very heavy makeup wearers. And anyone who feels like it makes a difference for their skin I guess. I do also agree with Olena though about them being a marketing gimmick in a lot of ways. I tried probably ten different formulas the past couple years and I hated every single one. My skin does so much better sticking to one water based cleanser.

      Hi, I know this is pretty old, but do you think I can get away without double cleansing? I'm a student on a very tight budget so I make do with what I have and incorporating another cleanser into my routine is way beyond my budget. I have oily very acne prone skin, never wear any makeup aside from the occasional eyebrow pencil and eyeliner. I use Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF 50, Cerave's SA Renewing Cleanser and a soft cleansing facial foam as a gentle exfoliator. Any response would be much appreciated.

    Loved this video !!! It helped me a lot to see what was already in front of my eyes it all makes sense and now I don’t feel the pressure of getting a cleansing oil or balm because it’s "completely necessary " to remove makeup and sunscreen and end up probably messing up my skin (which is very cystic acne prone and doesn’t like oils) .
    Btw if you love oil cleansing and it works amazing for you that’s great but I believe it is not for everyone and it is not a necessity and people/ brands shouldn’t make others believe it’s like an obligated step of a skincare routine to achieve clean skin. Skincare it’s not a one size fits all 🙌🏻

    I never even heard of double cleansing until I bought some Ponds Cold Cream a few days ago to cleanse my face and then started looking for UA-cam's on it. Suddenly everyone's second cleansing.
    What you're saying makes sense to me though. That a good cleanser should cleanse well and remove what needs cleansing. If it's not doing that maybe it's not a good cleanser
    That said,. I have extra dry skin (I'll be 65 in a couple of months). And fir me the more water I use on my face the drier it gets. So water based cleansers are not at all my friend.
    I do love the cold cream though,. It's been just great for my skin. My decision is I will stick with that. And if I have any doubt all makeup is removed, I can do a second cleanse with that. And remove with the moist facecloth

    Great video, as always ! That’s weird how people also blame the ingredient in their product without thinking of the concentration of the ingredients in the product. I mean, I have heard a lot of people saying « SLS is bad and harsh for your skin because it’s also used in dishwashing detergent » but I’m pretty sure they are more SLS in a dishwashing detergent than in face cleanser.. (correct me if I’m wrong)
    The whole point of my comment is, you are so right !! People need to stop blaming the ingredients and start blaming the formulation instead... « the dose make the poison »
    For the double cleansing I’m very ashamed because during a year or two I was thinking that way.. (even though I’m a pharmacist student, so I should know that’s not true 😂)

    As a cleanser I just use Bioderma Micellar water in order to remove my make-up and cleanse my face. Then I rinse with water. That's all 😉 I have combination skin and have finally learn that my skin is really prone to dehydration and double cleansing especially with foam based cleansers is aggravating this condition. I used a gentle based surfactant cleanser without cocamidopropyl betaine which is too drying for my skin even though is considered gentle🙄 but since the change my skin is no longer getting rednesses and dehydration ! Less is always more

    I still don’t understand; is one then supposed to cleanse twice with a water based cleanser (cleanse-rinse off- cleanse again- rinse off) or just do one cleanse, then rinse off?

      I actually do it in my night time skincare routine 😂. But I cleanse in less than 30 sec. Then rinse off. Then cleanse again less than 30 sec. And rinse off.. But i don't knowf if this right or wrong. Just do an experiment and see what happen 😅

    I do double cleanse with the same cleanser though, I dint do oil cleaning, balm creamy cleanser😬 my cleanser does not have any oil in it, helll noooooooo! It took me time and money to get my clean skin to start doing that again! Don’t do it y’all, I’m an esthetician and oils or any thick cleanser shouldn’t be used to wash your face or any other body part.

    • @cynthiasanchez6085
      @cynthiasanchez6085 3 роки тому

      But anyways all of this does not make sense in the esthetics industry because they just buy marketing and are too loyal to their brands. The cult of hippies and the peoples obsession with fillers.

    • @dianarusnov292
      @dianarusnov292 3 роки тому +1

      The oil is not used to wash your face, it's used to dissolve your makeup. This is why you follow up with a water-based cleanser, to cut through the oil. There are plenty of other estheticians and dermatologists who would disagree with you, just goes to show everyone's skin and opinion is different! My skin only properly cleared up after I started double cleansing with oil because it actually took all of my makeup off.

      Here's a video that you might wanna watch that shows that:
      "I used again the UV cam to check how easy it is to remove water resistant sunscreen. On each cheek I applied both an inorganic (mineral) and organic (chemical) sunscreen. They are both SPF 30 and water resistant. I applied them every two hours and I have 3 layers. I let them set and I removed them with just a gel cleanser on the left side, and a double cleanse (oil gel + gel cleanser) on the right side.
Results are quite comparable, and I actually did a better job just with the single cleanse. Yet, I want to mention that results can vary depending on cleansing thoroughness, cleansers and sunscreens. Anyhow, it’s fun to watch!

      Hi there! I recommend only double cleansing at once a day at night. I wouldn't recommend cleansing with a oil first then later on use face wash, use both cleansing oil following with a face wash in one wash if that makes sense :)

      Hello. If you use sunscreen/make up that's hardly removed when using regular cleanser, then double cleansing is a good option if you want to try it. This is because the oil cleanser help break down the sunscreen/makeup, but not really cleanse your skin. You don't need double cleanse if your sunscreen/make up can be easily removed by just using regular cleanser. Hope this help

    I double cleanse. I do a method called skin gritting, and it lifts up blackheads (the ones that are hard and feel like sand) from my pores. I can see it and feel it on my hands.
    The science behind it is that the oil attracts oil and then when you emulsify it with water, the oil comes up to the surface of the skin since oil is lighter than water. Then I follow it up with my cleanser.
    My skin is looking pretty good and it's pretty soft . I say don't knock it before you try it.
