I use the Neutrogena melting balm! I love it and it doesn’t leave my skin with that “squeaky clean” feeling. Leaves my face feeling soft. I have to double cleanse to get off my physical sunscreen. I feel like I can still feel some of its residue on my face if I only use a cleanser.

Not sure I see a huge difference in my skin but I wasn’t getting all my makeup off until double cleansing. I always still had a little mascara lingering the next morning. I try to use really hydrating products and my dry skin never feels stripped when I double cleanse.

That's why I started pre-dissolving my makeup with regular cooking oil about 8 years ago, way before the double cleansing hype reached my neck of the woods. Before that, I'd go to bed with my eyes red from aggressively trying to scrub out the mascara and still waking up with remnants in the morning.

I love the science based explanation! Thank you Dr Angelo! A single cleanse with my face wash doesn’t completely remove my makeup. Double cleansing with an oil cleanser completely removes my makeup and makes my skin softer and more moisturized, but I break out like crazy! So now I am double cleansing with two rounds of my free and clear cleanser. It completely removes my makeup but does dry me out a little bit if I don’t moisturize immediately. It seems to be worth it though because it works the best. I just hope I’m not stripping my skin too much.

omg there are so little comments!! the clinique balm has phenoxyethanol as a preservative, so thats why they didnt provide a spatula i think. But phenoxyethanol is weak against mould and yeast so i would do the same thing as you, which is to wash your hands before dipping the fingers in and throroughly dry your hands with a towel. I would keep in mind that mold is everywhere through the air, so using it up quickly is a good idea. It seems to have only a minute amount of water, but combined with the moisture from your hands it can start to be an issue

I have a couple of layers of water-resistant on by the end of the day (Elta MD SPF 41 + Cotz + Altruist 30 SPF on my forehead: for some reason, my forehead is ball-up-city for most stuff). As a PhD who does research for a living, I’m surprised how little published research studies there appear to be in dermatology on questions like this. Maybe there just isn’t funding for it and/or enough unbiased (financially) non-corporate researchers to carry out the research? Also I just found your Instagram, great content!

My skin has never been better since double cleansing with an oil cleanser and then water based foaming cleanser. Purely anecdotal, but the oil breaks down my makeup and the cleanser cleans out the rest of the impurities. I was also apprehensive about putting an oil cleanser on my face and had acne PTSD. I’ve been double cleansing for almost a year now and have not had one blemish (I used to have at least one a week). Despite the lack of research, I’m sticking with it because it has helped my skin more than I ever thought something could.

Nooo not Clinique 😓 there are way better choices out there! Also, I have acne prone skin & I know it seems very daunting putting oil on your face, especially once you see your sunscreen & makeup melting off it seems so gross. But it all washes away and it’s so satisfying afterwards. The water just mixes with the oil to become a sort of gentle cleanser. It hasn’t irritated my acne at all, and once you find one that works with your skin it’s a game changer 🥰 hope you give it a try.
