    How has the diet + skin connection impacted your skin-clearing journey?

      Once upon a time I canged nothing in my routine but only took out dairy and my cystic acne went away. I feel like my skin even on your good skincare still hates large amounts of sugar (and dairy i avoid because my gut hates it as well). Sugar makes my skin like irritated and dry or.. And my whole body feels shitty tbh :/ after eating loads of processed sugary foods. I kd you not but after 2 days of eating garbage I start craving salads and broccoli and stuff :)

      Hi, this is very convincing, so glad I found it! At least now for the first step I can try to reset my mindset, improve my relationship with food (those guilts and food blaming once a pimple shows up) and focus more on the actual skin part. Btw, seeing how rare this is, I got curious and looked at your older videos. I must say your recent videos are unconventional and awesome, but I found that some of your older videos are inconsistent with your recent contents (not only the ones related to food). I think it'd be better if you take them down or maybe add revised description on them? I totally understand that your knowledge developed with time and all the research and experience, but you know how with social media algorythm nowadays people are most likely going to be served only contents that're align with their own opinion/lifestyle/belief. So I thought it might prevent some people who will just stop at your older videos, not bothered to check out your more recent contents, from thinking that you still hold your outdated opinion. Anyway just a suggestion, really hope the skincare community will be more filled with this straight forward and honest information.

    Thank you so much Olena for this video. Needed to hear this! I've been following you for quite some time now and I know where you stand where diet and skin are concerned. For the longest time I had thought that the inflammation l had was because there was something wrong with my hormones or my diet , that's what all the doctors told me and trust me I've been to so many doctors. My relationship with food was deteriorating and the acne was getting worse as well. I'm so so grateful that I found you and I'm even grateful to myself that I was open enough and ready to hear what you had to say. I can't thank you enough. So my skin definitely reacts to what I eat. I don’t know if it’s just because my skin is really sensitive against everything but I can see my skin getting worse after eating A LOT of sugar and dairy. Both these foods bloat me massively and also worsen my skin. Best example: My skin was genuinely AMAZING for like a week in summer, no active breakouts, nothing. Then I went on vacation and ate tons of dairy and sugar too. My skin got worse again (+ I was totally bloated). Now again, I’ve had lots of sugar after relatively clear skin and it’s getting a little worse again. I don’t think food can literally cause acne but it can definitely worsen symptoms. :)

    • @OlenaBeley
      @OlenaBeley  3 роки тому +2

      Things may seem to occur at the same time, but it doesn’t mean one causes the other. It’s not fair to blame your food or digestion for causing breakouts. 🙈

    Thank you for this video, Olena. I had a naturopath tell me that my acne was likely caused by food sensitivities and so I ended up doing an extremely restrictive elimination diet for almost two months (for a couple of weeks the only things I could eat were apples, pears, lettuce, and white fish) that really got me nowhere in the end. It only made me food-obsessed and miserable. Not a recipe (ha, pun intended!) for healing, if you ask me.

    • @OlenaBeley
      @OlenaBeley  4 роки тому +2

      Amanda Shewchuk yup, my pet peeve is naturopaths putting EVERYONE on the most restrictive diets ever, and usually 20 supplements, creating the most stress ever in the most fucked yo self-fulfilling prophecy ever.

    Preach! 🙌🏻 My life is so much calmer since enjoying all the foods and not worrying about it causing acne. The kindness I was showing to myself with food spilled over into being kind to my skin as well. I’m still healing (and purging from tretinoin) but instead of blaming it on what I ate, I now may notice a breakout and say, “Go skin, go! You got this! I know I treated you badly for 6 years but I’m supporting you now and we can trust each other!” I cheerlead my skin haha. Thank you for helping me get to that place. ❤️

      I think the reason we fall for things like this is because we want a simple solution, that one thing that can help us. And the whole “food can solve acne “ thing sounds like it makes sense...so we try it, and then we don’t get the results, and we try harder and harder - only making ourselves miserable in the process. Only to finally realize that there is no one silver bullet...that we’re all different. 😅

    I don’t dispute your perspective about skincare causing some cases of acne, but it isn’t always as simple as that. If it was then how would you explain why lots of people’s skin clears up on the birth control pill which is affecting their hormones. We know that vitamins, minerals etc directly affect our hormones, so for some people I do think there is a correlation. That said, I think it is a holistic matter which needs to be addressed in terms of mindset and wellbeing, physical health and skincare. Doing one without the other is often not enough for many people.
    Btw, I think your videos are brilliant and you are a breath of fresh air...just think it’s not always as cut and dry as you put it.

    • @OlenaBeley
      @OlenaBeley  4 роки тому +3

      Natasha Darko I would have agreed with you a few years ago, but not after having healed the skin of hundreds of people.
      It’s no longer anecdotal evidence for me, it’s hands on experience.
      Vitamin and mineral deficiencies and even hormones don’t cause acne.
      Acne starts in the pore and that’s it - it’s a result of inflammation caused on the surface of the skin.
      Blaming pimples on hormones is akin to blaming a blister on hormones. It’s only due to a real misunderstanding is skin health and skincare, skin biology, the human body.
      The body needs to be taken care of period. Not for skin.
      We should not eat for skin - this will lead to eating disorders and nothing else. I’ve seen too many people suffer at the hands of the “cure your skin from within” myth and I will not promote it.
      Food does not cause acne.
      Birth control pills is a long story that I won’t get into here since I’ve discussed it multiple times on IG already - it’s not a solution for skin health either and it’s not what it looks like.
      Acne is not a complicated issue, it’s simply complicated by misinformation, marketing BS, diet culture, and false premises. The truth is always simple.
      Many people are looking to prove that there’s something wrong with them, so they won’t be ready for this information and they’ll continue to vilify certain aspects of themselves until they’re ready to accept that there’s never been anything wrong with them and that clear skin is not a full time effort.
      Skincare + self-love = clear skin.
      👸🏼

    • @nightbuyer
      @nightbuyer 2 роки тому +2

      @Natasha Darko, I agree with you. I always had perfect, though oily skin, but in my twenties had to go on a huge amount of antibiotics for reoccurring staph infections. I used to be able to eat anything I wanted with seemingly no effect on my skin, but 10 years of strong off and on antibiotics changed that. Now, eating certain things foods cooked with safflower or sunflower oil will *immediately* cause my face to become an oil slick. And since I had created more inflammation in my body, this oil that didn't used to break me out before would then break me out every time. BUT, healing my body inflammation *and* using a lot of Olena's skin care tips have helped my skin to break out less often. My skin is much smoother than it ever has been. Now if eat safflower or sunflower oil (like in some (not all) chips or certain friend foods), I will still get oily right away. I still break out a little. But the breakouts are smaller than before. So I agree with you that although Olena's tips are really great and truly work, it's not quite as straight forward as "food has no effect on acne." For me, certain foods promote more oil on my skin, which may or may not be a big deal for my body depending on other factors.
      Btw, context: gluten does not seem to affect my skin (although too much affects my digestion) and my entire body LOVES dairy. I don't eat much sugar, but don't sweat it if one day I eat a whole pint of ice cream. Also, I don't know if Olena still recommends supplements for clear skin, but the ones she did recommend helped my skin improve. Supplements affecting your skin is the same principle of food effecting your skin.
      I appreciate Olena's posts for lots of reasons and I think her videos are a very helpful backlash against naturepaths or other folks boiling all skin problems down to food, which is a definite oversimplification. I saw lots of naturepaths when I had staph on my skin and none of them helped at all. Olena has a much better understanding of skin, so I appreciate her. However, once I had improved my digestion that the antibiotics nuclearized, I was better able to absorb nutrients in food and that was step #1 in healing my skin. Olena's tips were step #2. With both of these steps, I am 99% better.

    Olena do you think it can be that for some people skincare + healthy food or skincare + avoiding some types of food is the way for clear skin? For sure skincare is key but do you believe 100% that what we eat has no influence of no ones skin? I mean why people that eat whatever they want, drink lot of coffee and smoking and have almost no skincare routine, using oils, forget to wash off make up etc (my sister for example) have clear skin? Why, when I did not change anything in my diet or skincare and read about milk causing acne, I stopped eating milk products for a month and saw a drastic change? And no, it was not my mind, as I did not expect anything from it, due to I tried to exclude other stuff from my diet with no result. I just don‘t get it 😞

      Why their skin is doing well is likely because they don't care about it, while the people who obsess over it have the worst skin.
      Everyone's skin differs in terms of resilience too, but the skin can only handle BS for so long. I would not compare yourself to other people who abuse their skin...their skin will not look good as they age, it's only a matter of time.
      We need to implement good skincare practices now regardless of what anyone else is doing or not doing.
      How can you say it wasn't your mind if you gave up dairy because you read it caused acne?
      We create our own experience...so if you want to give up foods, do whatever you want.
      I'm just saying that the clog starts in the pore, not in your stomach.

    This is the first time I'm commenting but acne is related to your body health and diet is the main thing that cleared my 6 years acne when i stopped eating sugar, dairy and proceed wheat and started taking zinc, vitamin d and cod liver oil capsules and it was a blessing for my skin. Acne occurs because of excessive amount of androgens in our body soo you need to be stress free, vitamin d and ashwagandha really helped with my stress. I also took healthy fats like pumpkin, sunflower and chia seeds. Lastly, trust me I swear your acne will get better just get up and exercise and walk. It is the most important thing, trust me❤

    • @OlenaBeley

      This is a huge myth. The majority of people with acne are in perfect health (as proven by medical doctors). Acne is usually the result of unintentional mistreatment of skin.
      What you had may not have been acne, since most people overuse this word and call everything acne whether it is or isn't even close. A subjective interpretation of a person experience doesn't mean that objectively, it's what happened.
      Finally, skin heals, yes. You might mistake all the busywork for the reason the skin healed, without understanding that it could just heal without the busy work. Correlation doesn't always equal causation.
      There is no biological mechanism for food to cause acne. To say this is to say that you don't understand how the skin or the body work, in general...Something to look into!

    • @samaira2114
      @samaira2114 7 місяців тому

      @@OlenaBeley all acne is hormonal and this is said by a dermatologist Dr. Dray on UA-cam. When we eat high glycemic index foods like sugar, dairy, processed carbs, our insulin spikes and it influences androgen hormone and our sebaceous glands are very sensitive to androgen hormones so it tells to produce more sebum that overtime forms into acne. Majority of people got benefit by just reducing their carb intake and exercising. Also acne related people have a lot of deficiency like vitamin A, D, E and zinc. When they fulfill these nutrients in their body, their body heals. Skin is the largest organ in the body and when something is wrong in the body, it shows up on skin. Also we need to restore our skin barrier because natural remedies don't work for everyone. Regular cleaning, moisturizing, sunscreen and one active like salicylic acid will work wonders. Stress is the major cause of acne and stress hormone cortisol is the one that influences more androgen that influences sebaceous gland to produce more sebum. So, we need to exercise and walk in the nature to reduce stress also take vitamin b1,d, magnesium and adaptogens like ashwagandha. Also, need to sleep 8 hours. You are saying we need to apply certain things that don't clog our pores but you need to understand it is all internal and also we need nutritions to manage our stress to. When our body will be healthy, our mental health and skin will too. So we need to focus on low card high in protein(Salmon, grass fed meat), healthy fats(avocado, walnuts, nuts and seeds) and trace minerals diet first .
