Great video, exactly what I've been experiencing after starting to use: tretinoin, retin A, salisylic acid, azelaic acid, BHA & AHA, benzyl peroxide and adaplene. After fighting bance for a year I am seeing some great results since intoruducing these prpducts into my skin care routine. I also started keto diet and can already see positive effects from after just a week of my new diet plan. You got yourself a new sub from Finland!

      Thanks so much!
Ummmm one thing though: you're using a TON of actives, a lot of them are quite strong and can be drying, especially the BP and tretinoin. Like you're using every acne-fighting active imaginable...and I hope not all at once!!!
My concern is overuse, since dry/dehydrated/irritated skin can actually become MORE pore-clogging...So if you used a couple of these actives, I'd say you're purging, but since you're using all of them...It could be irritation.
      Something to consider!
      Love,
      Olena

Some people break out when they change their diet because their sebum production changes and their hormonal balance may shift, as well, especially if they stop consuming endocrine disrupters

Hii again, love this video and feeling so incredibly grateful for this free content💖 ever since I found you (about 2 weeks ago almost) I have completely switched up my routine with cerave cleanser. I also recently started a new birth control a week ago and I’m breaking out (or maybe purging) & blackheads in places I’ve never broken out before (yes I’m using actives like niacinamide which I used before) I think I watched a video on you saying it was normal to purge? I was just hoping for some clarification 😊I was hoping to look into your program if things don’t settle down as well.. thanks so so much🙏💓

Hi! Thank you for this explanatory video. I've been using more natural products (i.e., oils, masks, butters) for a while now (probably like 3 years), believing it is gentler on my sensitive, acne-prone skin. My skin is not getting any better, but I'm so scared of my skin getting even worst by switching back to more chemical based products. Do you have any advice for this situation? I'm sooo tired of my skin in this condition :/

I have a question, in your videos you mention that it takes up to 8 weeks to form a pimple (may not be full 8 weeks every time) but also that people shed their skin and become “a new you” every 4-6 weeks. Just wondering if you could clarify the lineup of those time spans. As in how could you have a pimple that’s been forming for 8 weeks if you have all new skin? Thank you for all your amazing videos and wisdom you share 💜

    • @Alkaz530
      @Alkaz530 2 роки тому

this is really late but when you shed your skin every 4-6 weeks that is just the uppermost one layer. pimples are forming underneath the surface much lower.

Hi Olena! Let’s say I’m using an acid, how would I know if it’s just purging or possibly irritating my skin? Is it normal for your skin to be irritated early on while using an active? And is it possible to just lessen the frequency of the acid until your skin tolerates it?

    • @OlenaBeley
      @OlenaBeley  4 роки тому +7

      Great question!
Depends on the acid formulation and strength -- if it has nonsense it it like Pixi, or is too strong like The Ordinary's Glycolic Toning Solution then I would discontinue use for a while until your skin feels way better.
Then if you're using one of these types of acid products, I would not use them more than 1-2 a week.
So definitely lessen the frequency and don't try to bulldoze through using an acid because you'll just destroy your barrier and likely break out more.
If the acid is 5% lactic acid or 2% BHA then you can build up your tolerance by starting 1-2 a week for a month, then 3-4x a week the next, and maxing out at around every other day.
      Hope this helps!
      Love,
      Olena

Hi. Omg watching this instantly made me feel so much better. I came from using bar soap and occasional moisturizers and oil on my skin, because i have oily acne prone skin. I was scared to use other stuff because i had a horrible cystic acne when i was 21 that left me with ice picks. After that my skin cleared up and i would only get acne a week before my period. A week ago i discovered The Ordinary and i started using niacinimide, retinol, glycolic acid, and serums in my skin and i started getting lots of acnes. I guess its what you described as purging. I was on the verge of quiting these active ingredients, until i watched your video, so thank you! Hopefully it clears up in few weeks and i'll have great skin!

I just recently know about purging. I started to use aha bha ordinary chemical exfoliation in dec 2019 and my skin did clear up a bit and i only experience 1 or 2 pimple here n there. But on mid jan all of sudden all my pimples seems to come out together all at once. It got worse but some of it heal itself the next day. My skin was left with redness n scars. I thought i was having a severe breakout. But then i only know that its normal to purge before u get a clearer skin if we're using active ingredients. Then they said to keep continue using the acid to get the results. Now the thing is im not sure if i can use ordinary niacinamide to help my sebum control and lightens my scaring during my purging. Please help.. I hope my skin gets clearer and healthier after my purging period. But now i just have to deal with the acnes...

I am currently using The Ordinary’s Nicanicamide 10% + Zinc 1% and Magnesium Ascorbyl Acid 10%. I was wondering if any of these products cause purging? My forehead and chin area started breaking out. They’re not blackheads, mostly whiteheads and skin colored acne. I dont get much acne on my chin but since I began using these products, I broke out more on my chin area. Should I stop using it ? Is it purging or just a bad reaction? HELP😭

Wow, super informative thank you! What is your opinion on dry oils like camellia? Everything you described was me couple years ago when I used coconut oil to cleanse and moisturize (😖I know) for a month. I never had acne until 31 years, then it hit me like a ton of bricks,, severe cystic acne :( its taken years to get back to somewhat normal skin (mostly due to really bad advice on how to treat it) and even now my skin yo yos...it’ll be perfectly clear for couple months and then get a cluster of acne, then clear again :/

I heard somewhere that in order to tell the difference between purging and breaking out from a product is the location of the pimples and size. Purge should begin in the usual areas you breakout meanwhile reaction to a product will cause deep pimples in areas you usually don't break out. This is just what I heard, so not sure if it's true. Feel free to chime in if you know if it's a myth or fact :).

I was wondering if you know about Dr Bronners Tea Tree Pure-Castile liquid soap? I started using that to clean my skin once a day and jojoba oil to moisturize.. 3 weeks ago. I am breaking out pretty bad but in the usual areas. I am so unsure if it is a purge from the soap?? or whether I should stop using the jojoba oil. I have an event coming up and it is pretty damn stressful :( I suffer most from winter acne and have had major sebum problems over the past year so that is why I thought these products would help me in reducing the sebum and staying moisturized. sorry this comment is so long. Btw you're beautiful :)

    • @OlenaBeley
      @OlenaBeley  5 років тому +2

Hi there, thank you for your question!
So this particular soap is highly alkaline while healthy skin is acidic, meaning that with time it throws off your skin's acidity making it more alkaline AND more prone to bacterial overgrowth!
I definitely don not recommend this particular combo, because it will only dehydrate your skin -- which will actually make it appear MORE oily unfortunately!
Jojoba oil seems innocent in the beginning, but I assure you that in 3-4 weeks of using it as a moisturizer you'll see increased clogging.
It sounds like you need a legitimate skincare routine that will cleanse, treat, hydrate, and protect your skin...which takes about 1.5-3 months of consistent use to see the kinds of results that you want.
But please don't stress about it, because it's only skin -- you're beautiful with or without perfect skin! This can be fixed and is only a temporary hiccup :)

      Olena

I think I am purging right now, so many spots, like 100 odd little whiteheads!!!! KILL ME.
I just started using The Ordinary salicylic acid on my spots/break out area ( added in hyaluronic acid & rosehip oil too) I am pretty sure it is purging, I have very combo skin - spotty around chin, forehead and can get big ones on my cheeks but I get eczema around nose & eyes. I also have autoimmune issues and have had some bad eczema flare-ups on my face, but this looks and feels so different from that - I don't normally get whiteheads when this happens.
Spots are happening around my normal troubled areas, but also my eye area got very red & puffy even though I didn't put any salicylic acid there and this started two days after using the acids so assuming its purging. Would you recommend carry on putting salicylic acid? I haven't since my skin flared up. Any advice or help??

I have no idea what this could be since there's not enough context -- it could coincide with a terrible skincare routine? I would always ALWAYS first look at the skincare, and then after implementing a legitimately good skincare routine for 3+ months you can see if it's really an internal issue.

Yes so I have an a excellent skin care routine that works amazing to get rid of huge cysts etc and worked wonders. but then they appear on my chin in huge formations (the rest of my skin is fine with decent eating and skin care) But when I have dairy or a lot of cruciferous vegetables they reappear. I also eat probiotics and drink a lot of water recently for my gut health from antibiotics but I don't think that's it.
      My routine:
I wash with a low ph gel cleanser or water depending on my skin and oil cleanse with fungal acne safe MC oil (just to be extra careful as I'm sensitive to oil) if I have makeup.
Tone with Avene spray or gentle toner
Apply Niacinamide & Buffet form the ordinary
Then use a x2 barrier cream (for sensitive skin that is free from tip 10 harsh things)
Sunscreen that contains Niacinamide or is gentle SPF50+
      For actives:
BHA Cosrx Blackhead power liquid (freaking amazing)
Vit C by the ordinary (Fabulous)
My doctors and derm both gave me clyndimicin and tretonoin but both have proven inaafective compared to Niacinamide.
Sometimes I'll use a mask for sensitive skin or korean mask.

I don't quite understand? You're using lactic acid to wash your face? Is the lactic acid the main ingredient or way down on the ingredient list?

I just started using a Missha toner and essence. I’m not really breaking out technically but it’s like my skin is becoming more congested around my chin. Should I worry that these products are just clogging my pores rather than it just purging?

Ooh I tend to stay away from K-beauty and don't recommend it for my clients since a lot of these products are mostly just overhyped moisturizes -- containing little to no actives, while also usually containing alcohol and/or fragrance and a bunch of plant extracts.
You might not be breaking out currently, but that's because congestion does take time -- usually about 1 skin cycle (about 4-6 weeks). That means that today it can be congestion, but in 2-4 weeks it can be full blown breakouts.
      Hope this provides some clarity!

    • @OlenaBeley

Ooh interesting, and I'd love to form a conclusion but I don't have enough info. Like the rest of your routine matters, how long you used the product, its ingredients etc.
If you've used it for a month or more and you see these bumps then likely it's your skin reacting, but if you used it for a few days, that's not enough data to make a conclusion.
Also some other product in your routine can be causing the issue, or you might be purging on this product...

It depends on the actual strengths of the AHA or BHA, most cleansers don't contain enough, but some still contain enough to cause unnecessary dryness and irritation, especially around the eye area.
I would avoid acids in a cleanser, and opt for serums that contain them with actual percentage strengths so that you know how strong they are.

Likely not, usually clay masks don't contain any actives. But I do not recommend clay masks since they are SUPER drying, they will suck all the moisture out of your skin and won't actually help the breakouts since dry/dehydrated skin means that your skin cells will stick together more instead of sloughing off naturally, creating more clogging.

I recently just started a new diet along with exercise, I drink a gallon of water daily, I noticed I have been breaking out when I usually only have breakouts around my cycle can this be purging or a reaction?

Me! Idk if I'm purging or not. But I started having pimples and some whiteheads on my forehead and jaw area. But the white heads do go away pretty quickly so idk if it's a break out or purging 😭

Beautiful video thanks. I'm using niacinamide from the ordinary, still getting breakouts and don't understand if it's just purging or not.. Apparently for some prople works magic for other actually causes breakouts (not purging)

      Thanks for watching!
I don't have enough context to comment about your reaction, however...
The thing, niacinamide alone will not necessarily stop the problem, especially if the rest of your Routine isn't supporting your skin (like the wrong cleanser, heavy moisturizer, no scunscreen, irritating ingredients). Actives alone can't do all the work....
I look at a skincare routine like a team, and if one member isn't playing well, then the team loses the game! :)
      Hope this provides some insight...
      Love,
      Olena

    Can Vitamin C cause purging?

Unfortunately you’re incorrect in the way you’re framing the science behind sweating.
Sweat definitely can contain heavy toxic heavy metals, organic compounds (for example herbs or mushrooms that people eat often lend a certain odor to a person’s perspiration), and even drugs like meth can be transferred from a drugged up caregiver to an infant from the sweat of the adult absorbing into the infant’s skin.
But you’re correct in saying that toxin removal isn’t the sweat glands main function, and that toxins removed are not high enough to really pose a health benefit, though there really aren’t many studies about things like saunas, etc. just based on the math, they aren’t anywhere near as effective as a big glass of water and a trip to the potty or chelating medications etc.
If you have anything coming out of your skin and causing skin issues (YES, THAT HAPPENS!) you need to see a health care practitioner immediately.
This can happen due to liver failure, metabolism issues, very serious diseases and heavy metal poisoning.
As a medical professional the scent of a patient is actually part of an exam.
I get what you’re sayin, that your skin isn’t flushing out toxins it stores up, the body doesn’t store toxins, period, or that the skin isn’t running a filtration system for the blood stream, but what you’re saying about circulating blood and sweat glands is scientifically inaccurate.
It makes it hard to trust the science behind everything else you’re saying. And at the end of it, skincare is a science.

Lost and Found I'm happy you see and agree with my main points! And for the purposes of the conversation about acne and not toxicology, this video helps people determine the difference between breaking out, purging, and “detoxing” (a term that is overused and misused in skincare and acne communities). This article sums up my position on skin not being a detox organ nicely. :) www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/the-dubious-practice-of-detox
