Great review. One of only a handful of NES games that I never completed back in the day. So with IronSword and BattleToads they decided to torture us and made sure no one would ever say such a thing ever again. Their response was always that they wanted gamers to get their money's worth which is why they made it so difficult. They even said something along the lines of "there's nothing worse than an easy game"
As a kid my friend had Battletoads, but I didn’t.. so making progress was slow and difficult. In late high school to college I picked it up for $5 used and gave it another shot. I've always been OK with the innumerable variations of TMNT cartoons and comics, so it wasn't a big deal for me. I think it could have functioned as an interactive TV Pilot episode for an ongoing animation series as well. Ha, that introduction with the knock-off imitation brands was funny! :) But also a good intro into these Ninja Turtles-like Battletoads. A difficult series overall, which I never got around to completing. Cool video history, Patman, thanks! Much like the arcade Jackal, I'm thinking I can tap in a 2nd player before losing all lives to extend the continues and chance of survival compared to only playing 1 player the whole game. I'd have to test it out next time.
You know I am not really sure. I try to think what other games would let you do that. I've got one right on the tip of my tongue. Pit fighter for the Genesis possibly? Thanks a lot glad you enjoyed it
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Pit Fighter, cool, thanks. It's a trick where also in Golden Axe on Genesis, you can start a second player game on the very last life/continue of player 1 to keep going most times if needed. Nice work getting through the levels of each game here for this video. I need to try to find the arcade version now. Great video, Thanks Patman!
The Nes game is something I've beaten without any cheats from start to finish, but I had to use Game Genie and infinite lives as training wheels to get to that point. My middle brother and I would warp staight to a stage, and get killed repeatedly till both of were good enough complete the stage together. We'd usually turn the game off after getting through the level. We go through level by level till we could put all together and do the entire thing. This of course ran into a wall at lvl 11, as you can't beat the Clinger Winger with two people as the second player controls are bugged.(Some other poster claims it's doable.) They will simply die over and over helplessly. No one ever made it far enough into beta testing with two characters to catch the bug in time. The Arcade game I think is probably the best overall experience as it's tough, but not as ball breaking as the NES title. Beating a 3 player beat em up affair, I think it grabs a much larger audience as it's not weighted down by the stupidly hard vehicle parts. I fiorst played the Arcade beat em in my early teens and just laughed my ass off when I saw the over the top animations. A younger kid happen to join in as I played, and we were both laughing so hard. I actually remember tearing up from laughing so much. Young boys definitely were the target audience for this game, as it was SUPER EFFECTIVE. I didn't see in too many places, or I would played it all way through. I didn't get to beat from start to finish till a year or two ago at the Galloping Ghost with a friend of mine who never played it before. He said was his favorite game he played that day when we went there for a couple hours with his wife and daughter. Battle Toads and Double Dragon was definitely more Battle Toads than a Double Dragon game. It felt like a mod of the NES game with the double dragon cast inserted. It's fun enough, and much easier than the original game, but I wonder how many people were like I want to play as the Toad not the Lee brothers, but were forced to as player 2.
In my opinion as the series progressed the difficulty Getting lower and lower. With that being said the fun factor went up for me especially with the arcade game. I loved the over-the-top animations as well.
I never got into those types of games but I'd be interested to see Dance Dance Revolution as well. That game always had a huge crowd surrounding it in my local arcade.
The sad thing about the arcade game is that it was originally meant to have so much more content, it originally had nine levels and nine bosses and even dialogue in cutscenes
Only reason I was ever able to beat Battletoads was the repelling Wookie Hole level. I got stupid good at getting extra lives from the crows in that level. It would give you throwaway lives so you could spend more time getting used to and memorizing the different aspects of the game. Add to that the warps in the speeder bike level and the snake pit - and even with that I only beat the game once or twice. The only level I could never beat was Volkmire's Inferno.
I still love the Battletoads, but do to my seizures I can never play it again. But I do remember when Battletoads and Double Dragon came out, my brother and I looked at each other and said this game would have been better if the Battletoads had been teamed up with the Turtles instead.
What?! Ninja Turtles?! This game wasn't based on Knight Rider and Fival Goes West: For Drugs Yo. ;) Addendum- I love your content and this one was really great. Further, I love your follow up comments to complete and utter nonsense. :)
I like the Toads and Double Dragon for the SNES, but my favorite game is probably the arcade. The original is a classic, but too frustrating to play regularly.
even thought 99% of players never got past the 4th level and beating the game in 2p mode is simply immposible, is considered one of the best games ever made, is really THAT good...
The gameplay and graphics were excellent for NES, but this game was simply too difficult for it's intended audience.
Should note that the PAL release fixed the Clinger Winger P2 glitch.
Honestly, I've only made it to level 4 once. Usually, I would hit the warp in level 3, going straight to Surf City.

Yes he also did the music for the battle toads cartoon that's on UA-cam. Was going to mention that but forgot to include it
This channel is so underrated with subscribers
Thanks a bunch, I appreciate the nice words
18:27 Wow, thats a blast from the past. "Whack!" Lol. You gotta love the 90s.
LOL, no doubt
I was waiting for you to do this.
This is going be fun.
Hope you enjoyed it
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I already have.
👍
Thanks! For doing a Battletoads video!
How very generous, thank you so much
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries thank you so much again. If you ever do a dedicated video on the Battletoads Arcade, I will donate even more. Perhaps, even consider adding information on the unreleased Battletoads novel/ screenplay. It is a riot to read.
I played the gameboy port of this a ton. It was so hard and I never beat it. But it was fun so good job!
Yes it turned out rather well
Great Video! Battletoads was the hardest game I played and beat!
Battlemaniacs is an extremely hard game to complete. One of the hardest ever as I see it.
I always thought the NES version was a bit tougher
Please do a standalone episode of Battletoads Arcade. I would love to hear your full opinion on that game!
Hardest damn game ever
Indeed
Certainly seems like what they were going for. Absolutely unplayable in 2-player mode.
Missile Mayhem (SNES version) in B&DD: Best song in the entire series.
Entire soundtrack is excellent
Patman should do the history of Guitar Hero, i have been a big fan of PatmanQC for a long time and it'd mean so much
I never got into those types of games but I'd be interested to see Dance Dance Revolution as well. That game always had a huge crowd surrounding it in my local arcade.
The sad thing about the arcade game is that it was originally meant to have so much more content, it originally had nine levels and nine bosses and even dialogue in cutscenes
That stinks, otherwise the arcade game is fantastic
A part of my childhood. Great video.
I love your videos! Such great care and commentary
Thank you so much!
I’d be down with that standalone video on the arcade game
Finally got to watch it. Great video as always man. 😊
Thanks a ton!Cheers
Ah, a new Patman video! It's gonna be a great day!
How nice of you to say, I hope you enjoyed the heck out of this video
Love Battle toads but many levels have haunted me in my dreams for years
LOL, no doubt
I would get a tattoo at the battletoads emblem. Looks sick
Hours and hours of ultra-precise button pressing and yelling at the screen fun
LOL
i remember battle toads back on the nes days. but i never got the chance to play the game until now.
Excellent, try not to throw your controller in frustration
you might hear a lot of cussing & using the f word. but that's about it@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries
Im a nerd but I still listen to the Battletoads soundtrack. Especially the super cool Super NES Battle Toads and Double Dragons game.
I like that retro music as well
I have the arcades version on my arcade machine. Love it.
It's a lot of fun
What?! Ninja Turtles?! This game wasn't based on Knight Rider and Fival Goes West: For Drugs Yo. ;)
Addendum- I love your content and this one was really great. Further, I love your follow up comments to complete and utter nonsense. :)
LOL, you would think so. By the way I try to respond to each and everyone's comments No matter how ridiculous :-)
As a kid it was the speed bikes I couldn’t get by. Then when I finally did, the rest of the game wasn’t too bad for me.
It was fun but also very frustrating at times
I remember renting the game after reading the Nintendo power and being totally disappointed that it was so hard. I took it back really quick.
Which is terrible considering how fantastic the graphics are. A lot of people never got to see them
You didn't mentuion how awesome the pause music was!
No I did not
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
Indeed :-)
I like the Toads and Double Dragon for the SNES, but my favorite game is probably the arcade. The original is a classic, but too frustrating to play regularly.
I agree 100% plus the graphics and ridiculous gameplay is awesome in the arcade as well
Thanks for the awesome video! Love me some Battletoads!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks so much
This game irritated the piss out of me lol. Glad you chose to bring this one to light.
Thanks my friend
Battletoads was so much fun to play, with and without The Game Genie!
I agree
nice one the arcade game of 1994 looks fantastic
It's a lot of fun
Great episode as always!
Thanks a ton
You’ve got friendly fire backwards. There IS friendly fire in the game, and you can’t turn it off. 12:34
I really wish Microsoft would make Rare Replay available on PC.
It's on Xbox not sure about Windows
Every snack in the intro made me hungry.
Ah, the Dark Queen. The original Dommy Mommy!
LOL
I still can't reliably beat the turbo tunnel 30ish years later despite getting this for Christmas the year it came out.
This game was always a bear for me
