  • The history of the epic Taito run and gun document retrieving extravaganza.
The third video I ever produced for this channel almost 5 years ago was the history of elevator action. The original video was recorded using a handheld mic with audio that sounded like I recorded in my bathroom. The runtime was also only nine minutes. This one here is a whopping 34 minutes which Was written and produced from scratch and is quite possibly the most comprehensive documentary on this classic arcade game.
    Enjoy.

I absolutely adored Elevator Action as a kid. Don't think I played the arcade version more than a handful of times but loved the NES port to death. For years wanted to check out Elevator Action Returns but never had the chance until I saw it randomly added to the eShop it's all I've imagined and more.

Elevator Action is easily my favorite arcade game next to Mr. Do! Back in '84 we stayed at a motel on Flaglar Beach, Florida and there was an Elevator Action cabinet in our stairwell. I was hooked. My record on MAME (no cheats) is level 11. I also had the Game Boy version in 1998, I had no idea it was created in 1991...

  • @thewingedavenger1007
    @thewingedavenger1007 Рік тому

This is easily the best video on Elevator Action! This game was really something new and exciting when it came out! I played it a ton in my local arcade.
It's great that the NES got a version that's almost arcade-perfect. It was made by Micronics, who also did a good job in porting Ghosts n Goblins and Twin Cobra to the NES. Most retro youtubers think it's trendy to hate on Micronics, but luckily you know what you're talking about and don't join the crowd! Considering the cartridge size limitations they had to work with, I say they also did a good job in porting 1942 and Tiger Heli. A lot of people hate the "music" in 1942 and it really does suck, but Micronics simply replicated the arcade music for their NES port, so the criticism should be levelled at Capcom, not at Micronics who managed to fit such an advanced game onto a meager 41k cartridge. For Ikari Warriors, Micronics were given the same cartridge size as Commando, which was a substantially more simple game and whose NES port (made by Capcom) was full of flicker anyway.
Thanks for the great content, and we're all looking forward to more!

Somehow the game with the Elevators fascinated me the most and stuck with me for some years. Unfortunately, Arcade games were banned vor children blow the age of 16 (Germany) shortly after, so they closed down the section of the cinema.

Elevator Action is the transitional game between the single screen action game (and Crazy Climber) and the arcade Walk and Gun shooter. These are scrolling games (primarily in the arcade) where the character walks slowly and shoots and maybe gets punchy/kicky. Games like Green Beret, Rolling Thunder, Shinobi, Robocop, or Spartan X. Many of these games allow the character to move quickly vertically in a prescribed fashion (like Rolling Thunder), but these games usually don't have complicated horizontal platforming.
I don't know if there's another game before Elevator Action that's a side scroller were you walk, shoot, and duck. The only obvious "Run and Gun" that predates it I can find is the top down "Front Line".

Those mechanical elevator doors are more of a cheesy gimmick than a game changer in the real world, but it's a really memorable one. There's an arcade here in Michigan that had a unit, along with other obscure entries like the House of the Dead zombie love story.
Anyways, kudos on going the extra mile. I started this up, skeptical you'd mention it, and instead got completely schooled on all the versions (Playstation store, LCD, Champ) and a sequel (2020) I didn't even know existed. (I also didn't know the Saturn tribute added new features.)

Nice. Much better quality than the original video.
I grew up in the 80's... and have played video games since the age of 3 (thanks Mom... rip).
Yet I have never played this... mostly because I was turned off by the NES version, and neither of my local arcades had a copy.
Thank jebus for M.A.M.E.... now I have another rom to add to my list!
    EDIT: "Elevator Action Returns"?
Make that 2 roms added to my list!

The maME emulator has been a godsend for retro gaming fanatics. It allows us to play games that would otherwise have no option being able to enjoy.

Oh yeah! I remembered being really impressed with the Elevator Action LCD game, when I was doing some research on LCD games, a couple of years ago.
I ended up using the same method, for a Javascript game, that emulated the Game & Watch style.
It was a short Zelda 2 styled LCD game.
