This has to be the single most favorite docu-vid you've ever done. TMNT was a HUGE part of my childhood and this hits even closer to home now that I am collecting the Arcade/Turtles in Time action figure line.
I remember getting the SNES port from Toys R Us and at the time I didn’t realize the arcade version even existed. So many great memories plaything the game with my best friend. It never got old and I still have my copy of it.
In MY opinion, you are right! I was so sad to see the very last Arcade on our local entertainment strip shut down. I remember watching people play games there, and the owner would come near and tell you to play the games, not just watch someone else play. But if you look around on UA-cam you will find Arcades in the US such as The Galloping Ghost Arcade *( the US's largest, second only to Arcades in Japan ) as well as private collections people have in their garage / basement.
Now we're talking! This arcade game was such a hit back in the day and the SNES port was utterly superb, and the less we say about the remake the better. Hopefully the new upcoming TMNT beat'em up can live up to Turtles in Time's legacy!
That Crime Fighter's game was nuts! I remember that game. To beat it, you had to spend a fortune on quarters. I played it on M.A.M.E and it was so difficult to beat, as I had to keep pressing the credit button to replenish my energy (indicated by digits) especially towards the end of the game when all the bosses gang up on you and pummel you towards the corner of the screen. That game will literally make you physically sweat, guaranteed! Lol
The farthest I've gotten was the Pirate Ship with Tokka & Rahzar! I was not expecting them 2 be the bosses in this game! You can say I died of shell shock! I miss the old days when consoles had different games. Now a days like TMNT: Shredders Revenge it is the same across the board. Back in the day SEGA had a different entry & Nintendo was closest to the arcade, but not necessary the best. I liked the SEGA Version the best for "TMNT: The Hyper Stone Heist" It looked darker like the comics. Now signing off to play some TMNT...I love being a Turtle!
Both sunset and turtles in time developed in conjunction with each other. BURY my shell is thought to be a little wink and a nod to the upcoming sunset
I love Turtles in time I got it for Xmas of 1992 unfortunately is the last game our father bought us because he died January 3 1993 a little bit more then a week. Me and my 3 brothers still get together and play this bad boy rotating the controllers so we can all get our licks in. We do it in the name of our father. Victory is bitter sweet because we're grown men in our 40s and late 30s but we cry like children because of the momory.
Wow! This is awesome! I was a major Turtlehead back then. I remember when this first came out and being a mallrat hanging in the arcade there. I believe they had just gotten five cabinets, and me and my friends going around singing, 🎵"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!"🎶...... and waiting for our turn. Ahhh! Good times....good times! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the nostalgia, Pat!
Fantastic documentary man I freaking love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles those old arcade games and NES and Super NES games of the turtles was definitely part of my childhood those days were awesome.
It's Turtle Time! Great video PatmanQC! Thanks for the history and humor. Great video as usual and a welcome addition to the PatmanQC History of Arcade Games and Conversions.
Nice documentary, a couple of little things to add is that you can choose a slight colour variation of the turtles in hyperstone heist between an anime look or the comic colour and secondly the hold/ ragdoll throw is performed on the second hit if the foot soldiers are hunched over so its not random it can be performed at will once mastered, and the run then two button flying kick or the run jump which performs a flip then whilst flipping the attack button to sweep.
I remember the SNES port being the first time I thought to myself “this is like playing the arcade game at home”. In my generation, we got arcade to NES ports that either just simply used the title and completely reimagined the game (Ninja Gaiden or Bionic Comando) or they try to stay faithful to the arcade version and did the best they could with the hardware (Bad Dudes). This was the one where I really remember feeling like we were getting really close to the arcade experience at home. I vividly remember renting this game (and a Wrestlemania, wish I could remember which one with my cousin, who was like my brother, got a big take and bake pizza, chips, candy and a THREE liter of Pepsi and I’m pretty sure we stayed up until four in the morning watching wrestling and playing video games. God I would give anything just to go back to those days just for a little bit. Anyway, thanks for the nostalgia!
You and me both but you can never go back. Such good memories of playing games with my friends and family and staying up all night laughing and having fun.
The run button wasn't in the SNES game, it was on Hyperstone Heist. I loved the fact that you could choose between the cartoon and comic colors. My only gripe with the SNES game was that you had to beat it on hard to get the ending. It was frustrating as a kid. Keep up the great work. Your videos are entertaining, even if I wasn't interested in the game itself, I still watch your videos.
I can understand the frustration, especially when on hard mode, Slash can be a bit of a monster until you figure him out, and even then he's tricky. Regarding the run button, you are absolutely right, though the SNES game does offer the option for a double tap to run, along with the auto run the arcade game had, so it is still at least a run on demand. I do prefer the button for running, though.
I have so many memories of playing the original TMNT arcade at Chuck-E-Cheese. Seeing it again brings back memories of sweat and stale pizza. I love it. Thanks!
Great Documentary. 👍 TMNT were also big I’m Latin American, unfortunately never had the chance to play the game as a kid but now things have changed. 🍕 🐢 Cawabunga!
Awesome video!! I remember playing Turtles In Time in the arcades and when it came out for the SNES I got it and was pretty blown away!! Thank you so much, The first thing I thought when I saw the super Nintendo version running was "wow, that looks arcade perfect" and it was very close especially back in the day
I was a bit obsessed with the first arcade game for a bit. I'd play it or watch it everywhere I saw it. By the time the sequel came out, I wasn't happy with the Turtles as a property anymore due to the nature of the marketing and all that. The first time I saw Turtles in Time arcade, it was right next to Sega's Spider-Man beat-em-up game, so that's where my attention went, and I got a bit obsessed with that one for a while. But there was no denying even then that Konami did a great job on the presentation. I didn't love the second arcade game at first due to odd quirks like the auto run, but I grew to enjoy it. The SNES version was improved in some ways in my opinion and I know I'm not alone there. I also enjoy Hyperstone Heist a lot. They're different enough to both be worth playing, and I'm glad for that. I always appreciated that the Genesis version has music very similar to the arcade version, which I vastly prefer over the SNES game's music. Luckily, thanks to the hacking community, there is a way to play the SNES version with the arcade music, so that's a great option to have. Very nice work on this video. It was very enjoyable to watch as usual and informative.
Somebody else had mentioned a super Nintendo hack so I will have to look into that. That sounds really cool. A friend of mine was also obsessed with the Spider-Man arcade game and I watched him dump $20 when it first came out just to beat it. I spent three dollars and tapped out LOL thanks for the nice words, glad you enjoyed it
Nice Tatsu Movie Card/Sticker flashback. I had an entire shoebox full of those movie cards as a kid that were given away in a yard sale when I was a kid, without my permission! The cards weren't even ten years old at the time, and I haven't seen them anywhere else since then except online for stupid prices individually.
When I was looking at pictures of Tatsu That image came up but I thought "wow, that's very cool I think I'll include it "and I'm glad I did . Keep looking, perhaps you will find your collection again :-)
Great documentary! I was obsessed with the SNES game as a kid (of course known as "Hero Turtles" here in the UK then!) and still play Turtles In Time at least once a week
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I can't wait for Shredder's revenge either! Sad the release has slipped to 2022 but it should be awesome. Did you see they announced April as a playable character last week?
When ya talked about the iconic theme song and then hit me with an ad I damn near dropped my phone. Didn’t expect that. I was already keyed up to start singing lol. Well played. 😆
These were good times. When you had 3 other buddies that loved video games and the ninja turtles as much as you. And just wanted to beat the game. They don’t make games like this anymore. To play with your friends you have to do it online. It’s a shame. I miss these days.
I never knew turtles in time was also released in the arcades! Thanks to you now i know 😅 I had only played the first version of the arcade game, which i reaaaaally loved. When i got turtles in time as my first game with fzero and chō makai mura for my sfc back in 1993, i was a bit disapointed by it found it a shallow and technically not up to the task (i had a neogeo aes as a second console so that may have been the reason for it 😅). The 2 frames scaling effect when throwing the ennemies out of the screen was a big let down, when i knew the sfc was capable of perfect background layer scaling effect, so why didn't they use that method?🤦♂️ I quickly swapped the game at a store to get another one after 2 weeks. And now i have to buy it again for 200€ 😂 Great video as always! I would love to meet you one day and have a cafe at a terrasse where i live in Paris France👍
Yes the scaling effect was not up to par but at least it was still in there unlike the hyper stone heist. I have never been to Europe but if I ever do I'll be sure and take you up on that fine offer. Thanks for the nice words and greetings from the states.
The reason they didn't use proper scaling is because video mode 7 which allowed that scaling could only support a single background layer. As the game had full backgrounds, there was no way they could have foot soldiers also be part of the same background layer. It was technically impossible. That is the reason most mode 7 stuff takes place over a blank background, like in Castlevania 4. The game actually uses one of the system's three background layers, in whichever video mode that is, to do the fake scaling of the foot soldiers. That is why you can't toss them at the screen during the first stage for the period of time Krang is in the background trying to shoot you as all three BG layers are in use at that moment. One is the bridge, the second is the city backdrop, and Krang is the third. As soon as he's off the screen, you can toss the foot soldiers at the screen again.
Hyperstone Heist was another one of Konami's B-efforts in my opinion. That gauntlet level was just cheap crap too. The level of love Konami gave the Genesis really seemed to depend on what day of the week it was. Sometimes they'd give it amazing games like Castlevania Bloodlines and Contra Hardcorps, which were every bit as good as their SNES counterparts, and other times they'd do stuff like Sunset Riders and this.
Sunset RideRS And turtles in time were developed at the same time. There is even speculation that the wild West level in this game was done as sort of a bridging of the gap between the two.
Technically the original arcade did not have a super shredder as boss. The Snes does bc it shows him being mutated right before the last battle. The shredder does seem to be unusually tall, however by all means still is regular shredder. I can’t remember if super shredder was in genesis port, I think so.
Amazing job with the vid Pat! Turtles in time has a very interesting history with it and all its ports and the differences. I'd love to see a remake of it but somehow include everything from all of them into one amazing game. 👊
Thank you so much, there was technically only one port available and that was the super Nintendo version which I talk about in length at the end of the video. I like to get the remakes other items associated with it before I tackle the conversions
If I'm not mistaken, the level known as "Burn my shell at Wounded Knee", was put in the game, to pay tribute to another Konami classic, Sunset Riders, which was also released in 1991!
You know, when you think about it, the whole stealing the Statue of Liberty thing actually makes way more sense in Hyperstone Heist than it does in Turtles in Time, so advantage Genesis. 😂 The SNES and Genesis games are both great, though. Get well soon, Patman! 🙏🏻
I love this game! I played it a little in the arcade but mostly I played it on the snes. I crack up when Rocksteady and Bebop show up dressed as pirates. I love those guys.
PSA: the 2007 TMNT PC Game cannot run on a modern machine due to changes in CPU instruction sets. The game's own launcher cannot identify a Ryzen CPU, regardless of which OS or Virtual Machine (such as an XP install) you install TMNT under. It was a fun platformer Turtle game. It will only run on an authentic, older CPU architecture.
The throw and slam were not random; at least the snes version wasn’t. U could trigger the slam by stunning the baddies with at least one hit, approach them and press down on the DPad and a press of the attack button. The screen throw was done the same way but u had to stun approach and press forward and attack. U can beat the level on Snes with throwing the soldiers toward Shredder (screen throw) if you know how to do it.
No need to get touchy bro. 🤣 Just thought people might want to know how it was done just in case they didn’t know since u didn’t specify that in your video. Still good video my man. Didn’t mean to strike a nerve.🤷🏽♂️
I played this game with my brother non stop when it came out and still have my snes copy. After all this time I had no idea THAT YOU CAN CHANGE THEIR COLORS! I think the SNES version is actually the best version because of the extra levels and bosses.
Not sure if it's different on the arcade but on SNES the screen throw and slam are not random. You can trigger which one you want with the correct timing and placement.
It's funny you should mention Mr Kabuki. The machine is also known as Mr Goemon based off of a famous folktale thief from Japanese history similar to a Robin Hood. The character went on to star in a series of games starting on the NES, ending around the time of the Game Boy Advance. I'd be fascinated if you did a history of that series as there were so many games we did not get in America. Plus, I'd just like to know your thoughts on the character designs and music of this unique import.

I know in the snes version the throw controls aren't random For the snes version of you hit and enemy end stun them then on the next attack if you're holding right is left depending on the direction the enemy is facing you'll do the sceeen throw And If you're holding down or up in relation to them it'll do the slam grapple The amount of slams is dependent on how much health the enemy has

Bro we need these on switch or consoles somehow. License to print money! Figure this out konami! These games the Simpsons Arcade, Xmen Arcade, Avengers Arcade etc need to be on the modern machines imo. Great vid Patman.
Honestly I like the SNES version's arrangement of bosses better. Slash fits the prehistoric era, being a dumber and more brutal version of the Turtles themselves, and the Bebop and Rocksteady Cosplay as Pirates fight is downright hilarious as they get their weapons tangled up and do more damage to each other than you do. Didn't Razar and Tokka get moved to a different part of the game, too. I could of sworn they were still in it.

Yes the scaling effect was not up to par but at least it was still in there unlike the hyper stone heist. I have never been to Europe but if I ever do I'll be sure and take you up on that fine offer. Thanks for the nice words and greetings from the states.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries 😀😌
Been waiting. Your voice helps me fall to sleep.
Thank you….I think
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries right? That made me laugh.
@@louyork8379 LOL THANKS
Yooo patman qc thanks for the video!!! Im stoked for Shredders Revenge!!
You and me both! :-)
Technically the original arcade did not have a super shredder as boss. The Snes does bc it shows him being mutated right before the last battle. The shredder does seem to be unusually tall, however by all means still is regular shredder. I can’t remember if super shredder was in genesis port, I think so.
Im so excited they are releasing ALL TMNT games in a collection including the arcade versions!!!!
That should be a killer collection
Amazing job with the vid Pat! Turtles in time has a very interesting history with it and all its ports and the differences. I'd love to see a remake of it but somehow include everything from all of them into one amazing game. 👊
Thank you so much, there was technically only one port available and that was the super Nintendo version which I talk about in length at the end of the video. I like to get the remakes other items associated with it before I tackle the conversions
i will always love your documentaries Patman
Thank you so much :-)
Knew it would be worth it staying up late. Work be damned.
LOL, thanks. Sorry about that
12:54 TIL that Raphael and Liu Kang and the bad boss from Legend of the Drunken Master are all the same guy, Ho Sung Pak.
Nice work and Turtle Power!
Thank you! Cheers!
Would you consider doing a series on the Arcade 1UP games? Great channel!
Sure, it's something I could consider
I love this game! I played it a little in the arcade but mostly I played it on the snes. I crack up when Rocksteady and Bebop show up dressed as pirates. I love those guys.
That was hilarious
Super Shredder was exclusive to snes turtles IV, the arcade version was Shredder with a lightsaber
After watching yet another great vid, I had no choice but to open MAME and play this game. As I do after watching all of your vids
That's what I do my friend, bringing interest back to the games of yesteryear and tugging at those old nostalgic heartstrings. Thank you :-)
Mame? Is that an emulator? I play all these games through Hackchi on the SNES Classic.
Thanks for the info
Living in the sewers with Megan Fox wouldn't be so bad
No doubt :-)
@Angus MacFrankenstein a turtle mask or a N95?
Yes, like I said in the video is not random on the Home versions But it is on the arcade version
No need to get touchy bro. 🤣 Just thought people might want to know how it was done just in case they didn’t know since u didn’t specify that in your video. Still good video my man. Didn’t mean to strike a nerve.🤷🏽♂️
@@johnmecca9008 I was Not touchy at all, sorry about that
Great Video Patmac! TMNT Forever!!
You know it! Thanks
Patmac!
Oh 2020, my faaaaavorite year of all.
Thanks for the video, Pat. This was great.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you my friend
One of the top 10 best arcade and SNES games of all time
I'm right there with you pal
Amazing Video,Bring me Good memories about my Childhood, you're great Patman👍🎮🤟
That is kind of you to say, I'm glad you enjoyed it :-)
I never saw Turtles in Time in the arcade, even though the '89 original was everywhere.
They were both pretty popular around here
6:30 - I always assumed they either stole cable, or had it wired to an antenna on the surface. Donatello was quite the tech wiz after all.
LOL that's true
I played this game with my brother non stop when it came out and still have my snes copy. After all this time I had no idea THAT YOU CAN CHANGE THEIR COLORS! I think the SNES version is actually the best version because of the extra levels and bosses.
It definitely is the better version in my opinion
Criminally under-watched video.
How nice of you to say! Thanks
Keep up the amazing reviews Pat! Loved me some teenage mutant ninja turtles!
So do I my friend, thank you
Like humans were riding hoverboards in 2020. Oh wait-
LOL
I w really gotten back into TMNT with the Last Ronin mini. These games have always had a special place in my heart. Turtle 🐢 Power 💥
Absolutely, they are a lot of fun
Not sure if it's different on the arcade but on SNES the screen throw and slam are not random. You can trigger which one you want with the correct timing and placement.
On super NES it's not random, on the arcade it is
It's funny you should mention Mr Kabuki.
Mr Goemon is on the Nintendo Switch under Arcade Archives
Thanks for the info
Hello I am planning on filming my run through both of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game because I have both Raphael and Michelangelo in their license Monster Truck forum do you think it will help because I had the first Turtles arcade game on our Xbox but we weren't able to progressed farther
It couldn't hurt, give it a try
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I just love these documentaries about these games and I've been looking for these types of videos like how did galaxian was made what was the creation inspired by Space Invaders who in their right mind came up with the idea Galaga I cannot wait for more of these
@@hardlucknate6769 The problem with a lot of the older arcade titles developed in Japan if they are not very forthcoming with information. Those are all classics and definitely on my list but I try to cover things that haven't been done to death such as Mario or streetfighter I'm glad you like them so much thanks
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I'm sorry
One of my favorite games still to this day.
Absolutely one of mine as well
Oh yeah, the opening for Turtles in Time, Pizza Power actually originated from that weird Coming out of Our Shells tour,
It’s a trip look it up
Yes I mentioned that in the video
Oof,
Great video, as usual!
Thanks again!
TMNT was a lifestyle for me back in the day
I know in the snes version the throw controls aren't random
For the snes version of you hit and enemy end stun them then on the next attack if you're holding right is left depending on the direction the enemy is facing you'll do the sceeen throw
And If you're holding down or up in relation to them it'll do the slam grapple
The amount of slams is dependent on how much health the enemy has
Thanks for the tip
"Neon Knight Riders, 2020 A.D."
*sees it is August 8, 2021 A.D.*
Wait a minute...
They changed it for the home release for some odd reason
First time I played on the arcade!! I beat it through the whole game!!!
Holy moly, good job
How much money did you spend?
@@Keith2XS Dunno!!
this game is very special to me along with shredder's revenge they are both awesome and the snes version is wonderful
Yes I agree
I wonder if anyone that ever gotten an autograph from nash ever asked him about this role
He has talked about it in the past there is an image of him at a fan Fest wearing a shredder like helmet. Just google it
I liked the HD remake, despite it not being too popular.
So did I
I spent so much money on TMNT 2 that I could've bought a cabinet.
LOL, I feel that way about so many arcade games it's ridiculous
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries that's exactly right! Street Fighter, Final Fight, Ninja Turtles, just about anything you can think of that required quarters made a ton of money from me.
You failed to mention the Arcade1Up TMNT Countercade coming out in 2021.
Okay, what else did I fail at? Please let me know
I've been waiting for this one! The year is 1990.. IT!!
Hope you enjoyed it my friend
Awesome video buddy I love Tmnt
Same here, Thanks so much
Bro we need these on switch or consoles somehow. License to print money! Figure this out konami! These games the Simpsons Arcade, Xmen Arcade, Avengers Arcade etc need to be on the modern machines imo. Great vid Patman.
We need just a licensed konami brawler compilation with all of those. It would be easy money or they could get IP's sorted out. Thank you very much
I remember besting the game and being so proud
Turtles in time, mortal kombat 1 and 2 on snes was my childhood .
As was mine :-)
Honestly I like the SNES version's arrangement of bosses better. Slash fits the prehistoric era, being a dumber and more brutal version of the Turtles themselves, and the Bebop and Rocksteady Cosplay as Pirates fight is downright hilarious as they get their weapons tangled up and do more damage to each other than you do.
Didn't Razar and Tokka get moved to a different part of the game, too. I could of sworn they were still in it.
