This was one of my favorite games to play with my father. I grew up in the 80’s and my parents were both gamers. This game was hard but fun and addicting.
back when you needed at least one ounce of skill and experience to beat a game. Now you get to the final boss and get half his energy down and then it breaks into a cut scene where everything is flying around in cinematic view and all you do is push X when you're supposed to, and poof, no point in upgrading your character any more. Unless of course you buy more content.
Arc Systems Works ported Battletoads to Sega Genesis. Yes, THE Arc System Works that brought us the Guilty Gear, Blazblue series, and soon Dragon Ball Figther Z. They are the real deal.
Battletoads & Double Dragon is definitely the one to go for if you wanna play any Battletoads game, at least to start off with. It's much, *much* less punishing than the rest while still being very challenging, and focuses mostly on the awesome beat 'em up gameplay that you tend to wish was in more of the game in the other versions. Plus, Rare did right by the Double Dragon series, implementing tons of the most iconic enemies in fun ways. It's just a fantastic game and one of my favorite beat 'em ups of the era. Then when you're ready to tackle some of the hardest games of the time, try out Battletoads and Battlemaniacs (which imo is totally decent). They *will* kick your ass but as was said in the video they're very rewarding to master.
I had that game and offered to play it with someone. He'd never heard of it, and said it was weird. Not cool, just weird. Young people are spoiled as hell, just like on back to the future when he finds the wild gunman arcade cabinet.
Great vid as always. To be fair, Bucky O'Hare and TMNT both debuted in 1984 as comics, so while Bucky seems like a 90s cash-in, it's a TMNT contemporary, albeit a less popular one, and was reinvigorated by the early 90s toy/cartoon/comic craze.
Whoever designed the damned hoverbike level should have been punished with "If you want your paycheck this week. Complete the level in the first try!" every week they worked there.
You are not alone in remembering the turtle takeover of the 90s, I remember being 10 and seeing the first movie on opening weekend and having plenty of the toys... Well turtles and Ghostbusters.
I loved the turtles and my son does too. We watched the entire original cartoon series and we play the arcade games all the time. I am glad he gets to experience the awesomeness while I relive the glory days. We played the arcade Battletoads and I showed him the legendary difficulty of the Battletoads NES game. To this day being able to beat the game is a hell of a feat for sure.
Mate, i'm from Brazil and I discovered your channel a while ago and I loved these videos about the history of franchises,at the first sight xD . Keep up the great work, friend. I always follow!
I love me some Battletoads, I beat all the games without cheats. One of the best accomplishments you can get from gaming. Also Super Battletoads is my favorite arcade game :)
It's quite ironic that it was Battletoads being so hard, it sent me back to playing TMNT for the NES because it was easier and I finally beat it when I was a youngin... funny how that works out.
I thought Battlemaniacs was amazing because the toads had their own fighting styles. I'm a big martial arts fan so Rash was immediately a godsend for me because he was a martial artist, while Pimple was a big powerhouse
I wonder how difficult the new Battletoads is going to be. I feel most of the difficulty came from bad game design choices (friendly fire & hot detection) and something like that is hard to duplicate on purpose.
What New Battle Toads? this was an awesome game on the original Nintendo, was really hard though perhaps it was because of my age but I could never get past the underground ice level. I was just looking on the Steam store hoping someone had released a remastered version to play on PC with a PS control.
Still was much better than most other NES games in those regards. I know this as i have played this game multiple times through, it sounds like someone is just a little bit salty :) friendly fire is still shit though
I had a friend who couldn't get through the levels with the cars. I had a specially modified NES where I could control both players with one controller. At the beginning of that level we would pause the game, switch on that modification, then I would unpause and play for both of us. The key was to move the players to the bottom left corner of the screen so that they would be on top of each other. After I beat the level I would again pause the game and switch off the mod so that he could resume playing.
TMNT and Rare Replay got me into Battletoads, 3 years ago. Also glad to see someone else is as big as a TMNT fan as I am, grew up with the 2003 series since I was 2
Ah, I've been saying this recently with different channels but the feeling remains the same. It's nice to come home after a long day of work and see a new "Complete History" video. Thank you, man.
Battletoads is one of the top twenty greatest games in history. The next Battletoads game should be on the Xbox 360 Xbox one ps3 and ps4. Just a suggestion Microsoft make this happen asap.
Well done! I also have and love the Genesis version as well as the Double Dragon/Battletoads cross over game. You gave me a HUGE reason to pick up the RARE compilation disc. Thanks again for an awesome episode!
Kids today won't ever have an experience like this. I think it's awesome how big games can be now and how amazing the graphics are, not to mention being able to be multiplayer. My Daughter has had gaming experiences I could only dream about when I was her age. But to be fair, although it may seem outdated in comparison now there was something truly great about the NES classics. Such fond memories 😊 (and no, I'm not an old git lol, I was born 1987 so was lucky enough to grow up with the experience of the NES being quite developed in the UK, but before the SNES came out so kind of the golden age of that console over here).
I grew up loving everything TMNT, me & my cousins also loved playing BattleToads video games too. We still talk about it & now XBOX gamepass has an upgraded version of BattleToads for the new gen consoles that I definitely have been playing recently.
Bucky O Hare is a classic. First time I ever remember throwing a remote at the TV screen was when his lady rabbit got kidnapped. My grandma was pissed. Good times.

That feel when you picked up rare reply cause you want conkers for a reasonable price and you end up playing battletoads even though you already have it on nes
Cranking out my childhood here, Slopes! Seriously, you've been covering like all my favorite games as a kid so far, lol. Now if you did Rocket Knight Adventures next (I know there's not as much there to work with, unfortunately.) I'd think we somehow knew each other as children.
I was a little surprised that the video mentioned so little about the arcade game's violence. I remember being blown away as a kid seeing the toads decapitate the rats, among other things.
Now just imagine this: Toad... in Battletoads. Yes, THE Toad. The screamy, mushroom fucker that we all love in Battletoads. We can call it Battletoadsandtoad.
Battletoads was the one franchise that made me consider an snes back in the day. I'm surprised the franchise has been dead because I consider it a high point in gaming history.
thanks for reliving my nightmare. i played this game so much and still have not beat it. i put this game in my bucket list of this to do before i die. ( i will beat this game ) great video keep up the good work.
Nice! I loved battletoads when I was a kid. I don't think I ever made it past that swimming level though. Still, fun game with a huge variety of gameplay styles.
Mentioning Genesis and Classic Game Room in so little time...this is clearly my jam, aside that i love Battletoads. I always remember that Sega Genesis exclusive code for some Mortal Kombat game that was "a-b-a-c-a-b" a reference to a Genesis album that i less like, but whatever, i love that band...the complete 70s-80s time of that band. CGR for life!
Can confirm, the Genesis port of Battletoads runs a little slower than the NES counterpart, so it is easier as a whole. There are some quirks in the physics between the two games that make it unique too, especially noticable in Turbo Tunnel and the rope level.
The Genesis version is my favorite too. The graphics and sound are slightly enhanced and the difficulty, while still punishing, is a little more forgiving.
What's something about Bucky'o Hare is that they marketed them the same way with the Ninja Turtles. Konami did the arcade and NES game. Playmates did the action figures.
I feel like people are always really hard on game boy ports….back in those days we accepted that there were limitations to handheld gaming that you don’t see today. So getting ANYTHING that resembled Battletoads was a win from the start
The original GB Battletoads isn't a port of the NES game (that was Ragnarok's World which you covered), it was a legitimate sequel. This was my favorite version because it took out the weakest parts of Battletoads (ie. the Turbo Tunnel segments) but still had vehicles which for the first time allowed you to shoot back.
Man, I fuckin' MASTERED that Tiger LCD Ninja Turtles game back in the day. Loop under the spinning fire trap, jump over the little bitey robots, complete the 'stage'. Even after I got to the point that I was literally able to get through it with my eyes closed, I still played the shit out of it... Cuz it was the only portable game I had at the time.
I swear to god that I did make a wish for the cross over with double dragon and a few days later I received the new. Can you imagine how exited I was? I was only 10 years old. That day was the best in my entire life.
I'm a Battletoads freak, love it, super nostalgic for me. I love Battlemaniacs, even the SMS port(through an Everdrive, wish I had that cart). Battlemaniacs is probably the one I rented most as a kid and the one I got first when collecting again. Most infuriating are those bendable toys u showed, I actually have all 3 of them, bought on ebay like 6-8 years ago. They were nvr on there then 2 listings showed up, both had all 3 but one had them all brand new on the blister pack. They were the same price, but I got bid sniped and had to pay the same amount for the used loose ones as I would've for the brand new ones. Still, I love my figures, so rubbery lol. And IIRC, I paid around $80-$100 for them, no idea if they're still that expensive.
I loved Battletoads as a kid, not because of the game which I doubt I got passed the first few levels, but because I loved mutant animals back then. Like, TMNT, Biker Mice, Mighty Ducks, and so on
I was so disappointed when Battletoads/Double Dragon didn't make it onto the Rare XB1 collection - especially so now that you tell me it was as good as I'd remembered it being!
It didn't make it due to Rare no longer having rights for the Double Dragon licensed. Although I believe the game could still be release in the future if Rare could make a deal with Arc System (maker of Double Dragon 4) since they own the Double Dragon property now.
Yeah, the rights issues really hurt that otherwise stellar pack. Beyond the insanity of trying to tell the Rare story without including Goldeneye, they made so many licensed games that absolutely deserve being cherished, but will languish in ROM hell for the forseeable future.
This was one of my favorite games to play with my father. I grew up in the 80’s and my parents were both gamers. This game was hard but fun and addicting.

My friends hated playing the NES game. I didn't understand. Even though it was hard, I always had fun because of how ridiculous it was.
SNES version is the best.

CAPT. BUCKY O'HARE had a bad ass intro for the cartoon and the arcadegame looked and played fantastic .
Bucky O'Hare was hella rad!!
Yeah Bucky shouldn't be in this rip off group.

Looks like a fun game, I should call gamestop and see if they have it.
lol, I forgot all about that
Did they have it?
It was great fun and really quite hard as you worked through the levels.
Lol better hurry up and get your laughs now bc gamestop is a shit company and will go out of business by 2022.
flame nope
I loved the turtles and my son does too. We watched the entire original cartoon series and we play the arcade games all the time. A new Battletoads game is coming out for the Xbox One in 2019!
Really looks like it’s time to save up me wallet
And there is a new streets of rage for playstation
It just keeps getting better

Samurai Pizza Cats was genius
Yes! I didn't think anyone else knew about them!
The theme song is legendary 👌
Loved the series
One year later a new Battletoads was announced.
2 years later we would get dissapointed

BREAKING NEWS: There is a new Battletoads game coming in 2019!!!
That guy in pink who freaked out in GameStop was disappointed that they were sold out. Poor thing.
Really, I hope so, it was one of my childhood favs, one of the first games I ever owned.
Cannot wait!
Nope
Yeah, and it looks like shit. And hasnt even come out till this day (feb 2020) and that is for best.
The "DiC" voice dub was a brilliant touch.
I love me some Battletoads, I beat all the games without cheats. One of the best accomplishments you can get from gaming. Also Super Battletoads is my favorite arcade game :)
Ness Kirby the arcade version is a mindless button masher
Question: with or without warps?
There not even that hard
How in the actual fudge did you beat the SNES one? Its impossible for me!
Had a bloody blast playing the original and arcade on Rare Replay. I'm hoping we'll hear about a new one at E3 tonight...
It's quite ironic that it was Battletoads being so hard, it sent me back to playing TMNT for the NES because it was easier and I finally beat it when I was a youngin... funny how that works out.
"Yes, you're gonna die over and over again..."
Always on that one level. And likely _without_ improving much, because good lord at the speed!
I'm guessing it might have similar difficulty, but more checkpoints. Difficulty of these old games has so much to do with lack of checkpoints.

Young you had no idea, but Bucky O'Hare was literally released the same month as TMNT, both having their first comic adventure in May 1984
i think the joke was that at that age he could not tell, the samurai pizza cats were up there too XD
1:25 did anyone else notice the turtles signature colors were all mixed up?
Why haven't more people commented on this?
That actually made me fucking cringe
Why does everyone consider Bucky O'Hare a TMNT ripoff? He was created before TMNT existed.
No it didnt
@@mikemallory8580 yes it did, by a lot. Bucky Ohare was created in 1978.

Battle toads and double dragon was one of my favorite games
