Lol, do you really think that Swedes build a vehicle that can’t handle the terrain? 70% of Sweden is woods and mountains and up in the north there is like no roads at all.
And 21 rounds is good and since the loading truck only need 8-10 minutes to reload. So that is not a problem. The problem is for those poor bastard that in in the way when 3 trucks fire 18 long-range shells that strike simultaneously in one area.

Not mentioned, connected to stealth, is the role of the shroud the gun retracts to before moving. It's a thermal shield hiding the radiation of a hot barrel. I know of only the Archer having this. The Shell and Charge magazine holds 21 shells but you can manually load the gun as you usually do a towed gun. To manually load the gun with a shell and charge and fire the gun takes around 10 seconds with a crew of 4, 1 in the cabin and the rest outside. So yes, slower than the autoloader. Autoload and fire are used in shoot-and-scoot scenarios. If you set up a firebase you can do sustained fire missions without using the magazine function. In Ukraine, the Artillery gunners call it a sniper rifle. Said they don't fire areas covering missions but can with normal shells hit targets within two fired shells. Used in the Swedish Army the Archer is connected to the national covering Battle Management System (BMS). With it, the Archer functions excellently as a counter-artillery system. The accuracy also increases due to the ARTHUR artillery tracking radars that report, automatically, corrections of shell impact points into the individual firing Archer, before the first impact, the first shell detonates. On the subjects of Artillery. Do Swedes know what it's all about? Well, base bleed artillery shells - were invented by Swedes. The US tried by themselves to develop the M982 (Excalibur) but needed a better understanding of ballistic artillery properties and aero control - Sweden provided that. The Strix shell and the Bonus shell were also developed with the help of Swedes. Do Swedes know things about movement through terrain? Well, the dumper truck the Archer system sits on were developed as a forester vehicle before it also became a construction vehicle too. It moves better though forested areas than any truck. A truck is only better on the road with a higher speed.

The reloading of the magasine takes about 10 minutes for a trained crew. The amount of ammo is not any problem, take the French Caesar, it takes 18 rounds on board, the 2S22 Bohdana takes 20 rounds. So the ammo is the same on most of these type of artillery.

So it's not just for when you are stationary. Same with the MBTs(Leo 2/Stridsv 122) and IFVs(CV9040C) Sweden donated to Ukraine, all of them got their "suite" on. I thnk I saw a photo of Ajax with it as well, on the Ajax wiki page.

The A30D is incredibly robust. Its also over spect a bit, by a few tons. Probably the most robust vehicle you can find on the civilian market.
I think a lot of the data claimed here is wrong, like the armour protection level and speed. The 90km/h speed is for the gen 2 archer. The gen 1 can only go 70.
The paint don´t reduce infrared signature, its the cammo that do that. And it don´t block GPS signals, that would be stupid
The camo is made to be on the vehicle at all time. There is video from ukraine that show how it works.
Archer (like most state of the art self propelled artillery system) have a out going radar, a doper weather radar, and a ballistic computer. It also have a relatively long barrel, so it is very exact even at very long range.
The reason for the fairly small magazine is that archer is not made to bring sustained artillery fire. Archer is designed for a battlefield where the enemy got counter artillery radar and its really just designed to shot half of the 21 shells at the time, then redeploy. The reason for that is that it should be out of there before any country artillery shells arrive.
At the same token, its built in radar, can allow it to extreme fast response counter artillery radar in its turn. So its intended to hit other artillery while not being hit back

Archer is a shoot and scoot system. Shoot 3 rounds, move, fire another 3 rounds, move. So they have enough ammo for 7 such stops. They're not to be used as traditional, stationary, artillery. So the 21 rounds is good enough, and the ammo truck isn't to far away either.

Like your experience was having a set up firing base with towed artillery, where, as you say, the site has been pre-stacked with artillery rounds to allow for a sustained operation. From ONE location. When you were supporting, how long did it take them to pack up, relocate, deploy at next position AND drag that comfy big stack of shells with them?

21 rounds is an upgrade compared to the good old Bkan that had 15.
The reloading video sure look horrible, but are old as balls. They hopefully got that thing smoother, and the claim today is 10 minutes for a full reload.
I also don't think ammo is a mush of a limit when used to shoot and scoot, and you only use 1-2 rounds per target and gun.
The Ukranian use it as a "sniper howitzer", claiming to hit with the first, or second round.
The mid-body stearing also make it nimble. Heard it got a reputation of being almost impossible to get stuck with from Swedish users. My worries would be doing 90 km/h with tractor tires.

Regarding the magazine, you cannot compare with the artillery support conditions that the US Army is used to, where their artillery can just bombard lower tech armies unthreatened from the same position for long periods of time.
If you look at Ukraine, the artillery must deploy, shoot a few rounds, and immediately be on the move again within a minute. This since a military, like the Russians, quickly zero in where the artillery is coming from, and return fire with their own artillery/missiles. As such a larger magazine vs a high tech army is near irrelevant, as your own artillery would be killed if you stay in the area and just keep firing.

BTW the Swedish army has adapted the barracuda as it’s standard camo-net for the army, so every unit use them.

One of the key reasons for the Volvo truck choice was that in wartime, spare parts can be very hard to come by for specialized vehicles. Since there are only a small amount of archers, being able to get a hold of parts even from civilian vehicles ensures a better chance of operability even in wartime.

Denmark had ordered 19, had a few delivered, and the rest were sent directly from the factory in France to Ukraine, while the Ukrainian crew was trained on the units Denmark had received. Denmark then bought Israeli Elbit systems instead, probably because Archer could not be delivered within a short period of time. no need when u are 30-40 kilometers from the target..its made for firing in forest places where the trees and terrain is a good protection.
Sweden is covered by 68% forest so good luck finding it..becase it moves and hides all the time..like the army and airfore and navy in sweden

Norway did not buy to much from sweden before. because.. we buy from the alliance partners. Now the the market are open to buy top grade stuff from sveden. Our allies. I wanted the sweden subs. But at that time we chose the German submarines. Now a day, we as allies, we can develop togheter. Kongsberg and Koppums, Nammo and Bofors. SAAB and FFI++

AFAIK only one Archer has been lost in combat in the Ukraine, in what seems to have been an attack from a randomly roaming drone. So for the next iteration they are looking into some kind of drone defence.
The Russians put a lot of effort into hunting them, but it's unclear if it's mostly for propaganda purposes or genuine fear of the system.

    • @staffanemren

It will be great hearing from the Ukrainians how Archer performes. And all the positive and negative sides. NATO countries had better decide on a few versions per type of weapon to increase performance. Oh, and reloading doesn't take that long.

This is probably less vulnerable than the tracked systems out there in some regards. The ammo is not even stored near the driver. None of these vechicles has been destroyed either so far, one however has taken a drone hit, but i believe it dident get completely destroyed.. Every single artilery vechicle/stationary thing is vulnerable to direct hits.

I think the Volvo A30D is out of production (or too expensive or something).
