    Best video I've seen on making Pysanky.....such a thorough explanation of the process step by step. I'm fascinated by these eggs and cannot wait to try making some. Thank you for this video.

    Great video!
    Small hint from me (if no one wrote this before, I didn't see all the comments) - is to use a syringe to blow the egg.
    In this case one hole is enough: you make a hole at the bottom (e.g. just like in your video), then take some air in the syringe with attached needle (!), put the needle into the hole (egg is rotated so that the hole is in the bottom) and blow the air into the egg. Should be repeated several times depending on syringe and egg volumes.
    Air will oust all the egg contents and your lips won't be coloured. And one hole is better than two. :)
    (I'm doing eggshell carving, and it's essential to make no cracks in the eggshell)

    I like the clear way you showed how to do this. Very well done!
    I wish you had shown us some of the ones done that were in the box.
    I have one with an animal head of a bird on it & used a big ostriches egg. I got it from a place down the road from our Salvation Army camp. They raise ostriches & it turned out great. I gave them another one I'd done of a cat.

    I do like your video. You have an easy way of explaining that makes it seem like I could do that. I also enjoy your northern accent. I’m a northerner living in the south. I see this video is several years old. I hope you are well and still doing pysanka. Incidentally I pronounce pysanka the way you do. Don’t let the know it alls discourage you.

    I start my hole with a thick needle by rubbing it lightly in the area I want the hole. It makes it easier to poke the hole with the tack. I loved your video. I've been wanting to learn for years. Do different patterns represent anything? Do you recommend any certain books to learn this?

    I like this video, i learned a few things. A tip when blowing out an egg. If youre not comfortable poking holes in the egg, use a dremmel tool. I use the thinnest flat tipped attachment. Hold the egg and use a little pressure as you grind the hole.. as long as youre gentle there is little chance to crack the egg then.

    Before doing anything always do a white vinegar bath on the egg, also do not hold your Kista in the flame, hold it at the wick area of the flame only, when you put the kista in the flame at the top it causes the soot to keep clogging your kita up. You said colors was leading into one another it is cause it isn't fully Vinger bath and you have to use pure beeswax other wax don't work it will alow the colors to blead.

      I have kept mine over a year without a problem. I don’t let the dyes freeze, though. I keep mine in pint canning jars.

    hi! great video...can i use a ordinary candle wax instead of bees wax? and can you tell or show me how to make a dye?? plz...thanks

      Ordinary candle wax or paraffin won't give you the same effect as bee's wax; it doesn't melt as smoothly or flow through the kitska as easily and it doesn't stick to the egg in the same way as bee's wax so it doesn't seal the color on each design layer. Plus, when you melt the bee's wax off at the end, it gives a natural sheen to the egg that regular wax would never give you.

    If your lips turn blue I would recommend not blowing it out that way or do it prior to doing psanky on it because the psanky dyes are inedible and I assume would not be good for you. You can also go to a Walmart pharmacy or a farm store like Tractor Supply and buy a large syringe and needle like an 18g. They're only a couple of dollars compared to the things they sell at a psanky store which I've seen some to be like $17.

    • @myathehappy_1
      @myathehappy_1  7 років тому

      Once theyre shellacked the blue doesnt come off

    • @myathehappy_1
      @myathehappy_1  7 років тому +1

      You dont blow them out before you seal them properly or your dye will fade from the bottom when it's draining. You cant blow it out prior to dying or your egg will float ontop and if you submerge it in the dye using a spoon the dye runs into the egg and dye's it from the inside ruining it. the spoon also leaves undyed areas on the shell

  • @hazelblair6634

    why is the egg not blown 1st before you start working on it.

    what did you use to die the wax? I would be afraid that it would die the egg

    • @myathehappy_1
      @myathehappy_1  9 років тому

      you can use charcoal, just strain it out after it should be fine

    In pronunciation, the stress is on the first syllable. Otherwise, it sounds like a completely different word.

      Lena Lewis : yes. She says Kistka just right (KEEST-kuh) but Pysanka must be said PIH-sahn-kuh, not pih-SAN-kuh.

      Thank you for your video. However I have been doing this for 50 years this Easter season and had I done as you instructed in putting my kistka in the flame as you suggested I would not have any of mine for long as each time you use it the wood would burn. We only use this method quickly to take off excess wax or wax that has accumulated to avoid blobs that would ruin your design.
