I have long admired this art form and this was just a beautiful short film. The lady is such a joy to watch, you can see the happiness this brings her and her eggs are just beautiful! Thank you for bringing this to us!
My art teacher did this with us in grade school, for Easter. I always remembered how fun it was, and how much I loved the flame of the candle near me while I worked, and the smell of the wax melting. I bought all the stuff to do it this year at my house, 30 years later....
I learned how to do this as a child, and while my design skills were never very good, I did learn the technique. It's very rewarding to see all the layers of wax melted off and finally see the finished product.
I just can't figure out what she's using as a tool - here in the Balkan there is a small reservoir for the wax, but she seems to be dipping it and somehow it picks up enough wax without soaking it in?? I'm so confused!
So carefully crafted, just a beautiful result ... this woman is so talented, it's wonderful she does this and her mind is freed of all other thoughts, truly like a Zen meditation

I have totally been in love with these eggs, since I first saw them over 50 years ago! And I recently saw a few in person & I was so excited - because they are such beautiful works of arts!!

This is Ukrainian traditional form of art, though I believe that other Slavic nations do something similar. In Ukraine we call those painted eggs "pysanka". The oldest Pysanka found in Ukraine is 950 years old. Women make them before Easter but there are a lot of professional artists as well. We also have a whole Pysanka museum!) every region in Ukraine has traditional patterns.
The motifs painted on the eggs are specific to the romanian culture, they are also found on the romanian blouse (ia). As for the custom of painting eggs it dates back to ancient Persia

Bucovina is a name given be the Austrians when they extended their Empire in the XVIIth century when they conquered a part of the north of the Romanian province named Moldova. Part of Moldova was taken by the Soviet Empire at the end of the second World War. But tis is a Romanian teritory, under ocupation part of it.
Si in alte parti in Romania (in Transilvania de exemplu) se incondeiaza oua de pasti. Poate la Ciocanesti in Bucovina este o traditie veche si generalizata, daca si casele si le picteaza atat de frumos.

It really ticks me off that this National Geographic film starts off with a big whopping error! Pysanky are not painted. Painting has nothing to do with it. It's a batik process and anyone who knows anything about this knows that you"write" the design and dye the egg.

We had same technique here in Indonesia, but on fabric! It's called "batik". It is amazing how we are connected somehow by traditional art!
