For everyone who dislikes having the Attack hotkey being changed to 'T' instead of 'A' after you switch to custom grid mode, you can set it as 'A' still by going to grid (1:38) and clicking the 'T' (top right) and setting an alternative 'A'. I don't think this will negatively affect one's game play, and it most definitely resolves some problems that some may have with the command settings. :)
I got about six minutes into this video, paused and decided to say thank you LowkoTV, it is very hard to find help when playing RTS games however you do it perfectly and for my personal favourite RTS game SC2. Thank you!
Just make sure that if you split a group that you hit alt + 4 and not alt + F4 This was super helpful. I've been playing SC and SC2 using a lot of these commands, but never the placed camera one, didn't know that was a thing. Also I may give the grid layout a try for a bit (I usually just use standard).
10 years of playing SC ll - Happy Birthday StarCraft ll. Just started playing again and wondered why I‘m sucking that much. This video helped improve my skill so much! Thank you Lowko.
Soo, I just bought sc2 and after finishing wings of liberty, I changed my hot keys to the grid layout, so I didn't have to much of a connection to the standard layout, means that changing all the hot keys at once worked for me pretty well. This video also is extremely useful, and I am glad that I can learn from all your videos, they are great advice for a new starcraft player like me
they did it intentionally so ignorant ppl (who never actually read all the available hotkeys) will be at a disadvantage muwahahaha... just kidding, just kidding, but never miss things like this, because I'm usually the nerd that read the whole manual to pass time while downloading or so xd
they probably didn't think it through, as far as player could set any action to any key, the goal was just to make a game and assign each action to some key, so that it's not blank. I mean, allot of fps games still have arrow keys for movement, even though everyone normally uses wasd
I know this is years old, but it is a common occurrence that ppl rebind capslock to backspace and then the binding makes a lot of sense. Who uses capslock anyway?
I've been finding myself questioning some of the biggest developers default controller configuration schemes for years now-- thanks to Lowko, it proves that I've been on to something all along.
Been playing SC2 since beta and I had not found the base camera setting and also did not know the Alt + ControlGroup trick to add more units to a group! Thank you so much! It's the little things!
if you don't have locations bound and a base gets attacked, you might end up cycling through all of your bases before you get to the one you need and then if you accidentally hit the space bar too many times you have to click the map or cycle again and at that point you may as well have just clicked the map to begin with. cycling through bases is great for injects as opposed to binding each queen or hatchery individually
Thnks a lot Lowko... I will pratice this video... to improve my skill... i,m return to play since 2010.... its a different game.... Thnks again 43years old SC2 Player
When I was gold I switched from the standard to a custom hot keys setting; basically, I move the camera with wasd, and got all major buildings around them (in keys easy to hit, lice c v e...), and almost all abilities or upgrades (rarely units have more than 2 actives) on q and e. I found this preeeetty useful
Thanks Lowko for the video! I was holding off learning Starcraft 2 multiplayer play because I know hotkey are very important to Starcraft gameplay. Thanks for making the video K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) and I will feel more confident in learning Starcraft 2 now!
5:48 you can hit CTRL+F to center on current selection. This way you don't have to click on the portrait. It's pretty neat. I use space for that, but that's because my Grid setup is pretty heavily modified.
Hey man, I hadn't subbed for a long time. That's cause I thought you were doing fine, and didn't need any more support. But now I see you only have 177k subs, when you should definitely have at least 1 mill. I'm definitely resubbing, and watching every video. You deserve it, keep up the good work dude!
alt will create a new group to a new key while subtracting from the original group. control creates a new group, but the new group is also still bound to the old key.
omg!! thank you so much lowko! I have been saving my queens to hotkey to numbers and just double tapping the number to move camera to my different base queens so i can hit my injects. I had no idea there was a base camera key.......... That is soooo much easier. Expansions don't have a queen right off the bat so im never able to go to those bases when first built. thank you so much!
I've recently made a custom almost-grid setup. For units I have abilities on QWERT, movement and attack on ASDFG and the middle row as well as morph abilities on ZXCVB. Almost everything else is like in grid layout. For example, building a hatchery is QQ. Also, switching to different hotkeys setup isn't as hard as it may seem. If you aren't particularly good at utilizing the setup you have, switching shouldn't be too hard.
I learned so much in this video. Thank you! I am still a low level player, so I am still learning how to use hotkeys for everything. The only reason why I haven't switched to grid setup is that I am so used to using "a" to attack move. But I want to switch to grid because it makes so much more sense.
Yeah, hotkeys are the thing that's really holding me back. My APM is below 100, and so far I'm able to beat Very hard AI in melee matches... but my lack of hotkey use is really a bottleneck in my ability to improve further. To be fair though... I've only been playing SC2 for about 3 weeks, and only 3-4 days ago finished the campaigns for the first time. But I used to play a lot of SC1/BW back in the day when it released.. And, I've been getting really into SC2 lately. So, thanks for this tutorial video.
Excellent video. Keep up the good work. I personally found that when using/learning hotkeys in wow pvp/pve the best way to learn is to just bind all your keys and learn to use them even if you are throwing yourself in the deep end. That is just me... and this could work by practise in unranked games for those players worried about losing mmr.
this info was incredible... I started to win with this information, really, I really love the zerg but I never used them for the difficult of the race... Thanks, I always watch you videos and are very good...
Thanks Lowko for all the tips you give in your videos ^^ Personally, I use TheCore setup, but with your tips I've climbed to Rank 1 Gold (soon to be plat). If you're reading this, have a nice rest of the day ^^
Yup. I use standard layout pretty often, although I find certain default keys pretty frustrating and too far away: immortal, such as. Tried grid layout in coop and worked pretty bad. However, control group key is something I rarely use. This video is just at the spot of introducing them. Good job.
A nice alternative (or transition) to grid controls are to manually set all the production and upgrade keys to grid and leave the ones that you are really used to as they are. Personnally I was using my mouse to upgrade because I found the keys for those things too much spread over the keyboard without real logic. Setting those to grid helped me greatly to trigger them faster with the keyboard.
As a complete nub and someone who has never played this competitively but suddenly developed an interest...I'll need to watch this a few hundred more times. Gonna just flip over to this right away so I develop the right reflexes. I've always found the standard hotkeys infuriating and confusing but this...this makes sense.
wow I just went from standard to grid setup and u are right lowko it is a little difficult making the change partly because I am use to using kerrigans abilities with qwe and now its zxc and its sometimes hard to remember but I think I will be fine with practice but oh man your advice is so good. I was able to get so many more queen injects just thanks to the jump to base hotkey it is so much nicer and easier to use I love it. ANd even though my Kerrigan hero and army was killed a bunch in a hard match partly due to ability hotkeys being different it didn't matter because I was able to rebuild and beat back the incoming wave thanks to the advice in the video. Thank u so much for this video I really believe it will and is helping a lot toward correcting some of the flaws in my game and making me better and faster
I found that clicking on portrait of command centre whilst building or even after finishing does not centre it or select it- only selects the SCV related to it control F however fixed this and centres on selected command centre...other than that a very good video!
Ive created my own grid system. I dislike the fact that buildings have units in the top and units have spells at the bottom. Thus the standard grid looks like this: QWERT for unit creation and YXCVB for spell casting. Ive simply gone through all units in the game, multiplayer, coop or campaign and keybinded their spells to QWERT as well.
this acutally gave me a boost on trying SC2 actually.. ive been watching tons of games/streams but always was scared about the hotkeys.. but actually its "easier" as i thought .. :o
Very good video I learnt a few things from this thank you, although you can do a complete hot key change to grid to save you doing 2 keys at a time and you can get used to it quickly using the hotkey practice game arcade in which is extremely helpful. I would love to see a video on it by yourself :)
Hey Lowko - great vid. As a zerg player, what I struggle with most is the inject. Hotkeying as you do, my queens end up running around the map and not staying put. Can i ask, what is the keystroke combination you use when injecting? Thanks.
Hi lowko. You explained that we can group units while they are in cocoons for zerg. Is there any smart equivalent for terran please ? For example, in a ideal word, i would like to groupe all my future marines in one group.
This is probably the most important video for new starcraft players to watch
Friedcheese thanks
sc2 is too complex haha.
I’m Diamond and trying to get better. Been playing since beta. Didn’t know about base cameras lol. This is good for everyone!
I agree! Helped me soooo much!
I was having a hard time with hotkeys myself.
After watching this video I proceeded to rearrange some hotkeys. Was doing pretty well, until I hit Alt F4.. Haha
XD ....
xD LOLZ
lmaoooo
I bet that made you autowin the game ;)
@@spagettech :)))) lool

Single most game changing video I've seen since I started playing SC2 around 3 months ago... and I've watched about a half dozen videos on the matter.
I got about six minutes into this video, paused and decided to say thank you LowkoTV, it is very hard to find help when playing RTS games however you do it perfectly and for my personal favourite RTS game SC2. Thank you!

Playing SC for the first time in 5+ years, your videos have been great thus far. Much obliged. Very fun game.
Soo, I just bought sc2 and after finishing wings of liberty, I changed my hot keys to the grid layout, so I didn't have to much of a connection to the standard layout, means that changing all the hot keys at once worked for me pretty well. I never understood why the base cam was defaulted to backspace. Why Blizz why?
Especially when the designers consider harassment units that can rape your mineral line in seconds to be "exciting".
I don't have a problem with that tbh. But the way they did it is too much
they did it intentionally so ignorant ppl (who never actually read all the available hotkeys) will be at a disadvantage muwahahaha... just kidding, just kidding, but never miss things like this, because I'm usually the nerd that read the whole manual to pass time while downloading or so xd

excelent tutorial, i needed this very much!
thanks]!
Yesterday i was thinking "i wish Lowko made a video talking about hotkeys" dude! this is awesome
Base cam cycles through all of them??? Dam I was creating custom camera locations for all of them xD...
I do both actually. It's more accurate.
if you don't have locations bound and a base gets attacked, you might end up cycling through all of your bases before you get to the one you need and then if you accidentally hit the space bar too many times you have to click the map or cycle again and at that point you may as well have just clicked the map to begin with. cycling through bases is great for injects as opposed to binding each queen or hatchery individually
same
Same... as Zerg... God damn it hurts me now (and My queens)
Anima Manager i
This is amazingly helpful i'e always wondered how people kept track of all the different hotkeys and bass and such.
Thnks a lot Lowko...
I will pratice this video... to improve my skill... i,m return to play since 2010.... its a different game....
Thnks again 43years old SC2 Player

Alot of people prefer using the mouse to move the camera. But everyone has their own needs i guess.
4:50 Return to the location with a single click. Meanwhile, the Grandmasters click F1 300 times to get to that location.
I just started playing SC II and this video actually helps me a lot now it's a matter of getting use to it. Thanks a lot ;)
This guy is my reference for SC2. Keep it up. They should invite you to comment on one of the official tournaments
jesus the amount i learned in this video, thanks man I've been really trying to improve and this will CERTAINLY help lol
5:48 you can hit CTRL+F to center on current selection. This way you don't have to click on the portrait. It's pretty neat. I use space for that, but that's because my Grid setup is pretty heavily modified.
this guys like the redmercy of sc2 lmao
Hey man, I hadn't subbed for a long time. That's cause I thought you were doing fine, and didn't need any more support. But now I see you only have 177k subs, when you should definitely have at least 1 mill. I'm definitely resubbing, and watching every video. You deserve it, keep up the good work dude!
Thx Lowko. The grid setup felt much better on the first game.
As a new Starcraft player, this really helped a lot
The alt key + # is crucial for marine spreading when responding to baneling ambushes I presume.
I have been trying to figure out the split forever thank you!
I still don't get why use Alt instead of Control key. It works the same.
Plus, what does alt + control do, it seems like control itself does the same.
alt will create a new group to a new key while subtracting from the original group. control creates a new group, but the new group is also still bound to the old key.
Oh really... I assumed they just grabbed them with the mouse. That's the way I've done it
omg!! thank you so much lowko! I have been saving my queens to hotkey to numbers and just double tapping the number to move camera to my different base queens so i can hit my injects. Thanks for the handy, dandy video. Pleasant voice and to the point; great as always!
This video helped me out. Thanks lowko. Keep up the content dude.
This helped a lot. DIdnt know about base cycling. it helps me inject larva massively.
Thanks Lowko for all the tips you give in your videos ^^ Personally, I use TheCore setup, but with your tips I've climbed to Rank 1 Gold (soon to be plat). If you're reading this, have a nice rest of the day ^^

I only just started to play 1v1... and boy do I need to learn/use hotkeys.
Started playing new and this saved my life thank you
Shame that this info wasn't in the campaigns of StarCraft 2 :D Guess it is basically for multiplayers, thank you lowko! :D
This was the thing that put me off learning how to play. You've made it ridiculously concise and understandable. Fucking brilliant video! Thanks!

7 years later it still so usful thx
Huige and grand thanks! This wideo must be on the battlenet!
That's probably your first video I watched that doesn't start with "hello everyone my name is Lowko.. " :D And I've seen A LOT of them
wow, actually i didn't know anything with ctrl+shift to delete wrong units in the group..thx lowko!
As a complete nub and someone who has never played this competitively but suddenly developed an interest...I'll need to watch this a few hundred more times. Gonna just flip over to this right away so I develop the right reflexes. I've always found the standard hotkeys infuriating and confusing but this...this makes sense.
Thank you so much, this helps me a lot. Enjoying your new focus on the channel great work.
Been sc2 ing since WoL. Didn't know about clicking the portrait thing.
Extremely well-made video!
This Video help me so much ,Thanks Lowko!

Still shining in 2020
Just what I needed! Thanks bud love your videos

Great tutorial. Was looking for this for a long time.
Thank you Lowko. It's been a long time coming :p
very very useful tutorial man!! Thanks
Haha, drinking game folks: Take a shot every time Lowko says ''First and foremost'' or ''Personally'' in this video :D
thansk man.. I've been looking for this for a couple of days.
Very good video I learnt a few things from this thank you, although you can do a complete hot key change to grid to save you doing 2 keys at a time and you can get used to it quickly using the hotkey practice game arcade in which is extremely helpful. thanks for the video, very efficient and very helpful. keep up the good work bro!
Wow... i had no idea about alt... ty!
+Xengard You're welcome!
Your'e such a nice guy for sharing this information Lowko, thank you.
watched almost 10 videos,wasted my time,i found urs,already got 2 wins :)))),very happy,thx lowko
Hey Lowko - great vid. As a zerg player, what I struggle with most is the inject. Hotkeying as you do, my queens end up running around the map and not staying put. Can i ask, what is the keystroke combination you use when injecting? Thanks.
Great video. Finally got the alt part. But, what do you have för warp in as toss?
Awesome video thanks Lowko
Definitely useful. Thanks!
wowowowowowo wish I knew about alt modifier for control groups
thanks lowko! this helped a lot!
I will now be subscribing and also checking you out on twitch!!! great video man your a great player. Id love to see you in the championships!!!!
wow, great video, just what I needed :-) Thanks LOWKO
I was waiting for this! Thanks, man!
Awesome vid, learned a lot!
Thanks Lowko!
Hi lowko. You explained that we can group units while they are in cocoons for zerg. Is there any smart equivalent for terran please ? For example, in a ideal word, i would like to groupe all my future marines in one group.
Actually I'm in the HOTS expantion yet, and ALT control group works just as you told.
Gotta give this video a like comment and suscribe 🙌🏼 thank you!
to summarize how many grp hotkeys are there ? shift, ctrl, alt, shift+ctrl and thats all ? did i miss any combination ?
this is AMAZING!!! all in one video thx alot u made it alot easier for me :D!!
Thanks Lowko, I forsee some training in my near future...;)
Excellent video.
Thanks for this!
Nice vid mate !
How did you select all the bases for Zerg?
awesome video tons of great info
Thank you for this valuable information!
Incredible
