Great Karate! I have great respect for Sensei Kanazawa, my father trained with him many years ago, his karate style is perfect. Shotokan Karate is the best!! OSS!
you dont need a high resolution to know this guy is a master. The balance between speed adn power here clearly showed is amazing, all his kata vids are soo useful for learning and mastering the katas. Thx sensei
I think i've finally "got" this Kata, just need to start perfecting it now...... I've recently read Gichin Funakoshi's book about his life and think I am gradually getting Karate and now realise that I am going to have to put a lot more effort into it to further my training - training that will probably never end. Thanks to masters like Kanazawa for bringing us videos to help us, it doesn't matter if people think the styles vary or the belt colours are different, it's what Karate does for you
When you took a break from karate because of corona and then you join in person later than everyone else, then to find out that some lower ranker does this kata better than you so you keep rewatching this sensei's videos so you can be sure to beat that random kid next time well aware that he probably hasn't even acknowledged you :) edit: i got promoted to the next next belt, finally 😭
I see no reason why any heian would be unsuitable for a yellow belt, especially since a yellow belt probably can't show a very good nidan either. I agree that having beginners learning Unsu and such seems a little bit pointless, but praticing heians is always good, whatever your level is !
It's not about what belt level you are. It's the amount of hours of hard effort you've put into practising. A yellow belt who trains 4 hours a week in the dojo and then comes home and practises more is going to be more advanced than the orange belt who trains 1 hour a week.
Been doing Shotokan-based karate for over 16 years, this stuff is basic once you have muscle-memory of the moves. It all comes down to knowledge, application (bunkai/oyo) and technique. All the Heian kata are traced back to one 'mother' kata, called Kanku-Dai. It's a very long kata, and if you do it properly you should be exhausted about halfway through. =)

I really can't believe that people are saying Kanazawa's Kata is bad. He is one of the highest ranked Karateka in the world, of any ryu. He has achieved more in Karate than any of us are ever likely to, show some respect.
I remember watching my senior do this. That time, I was 8 and learning yondan. Months passed and it was time for my grading. Got brown belt at the age of 9. I had to shift to another state, my dad got a job offer in a different state. Tried to find an academy that teached the same form. Didnt find any. 3 years of hardwork gone to waste. I didnt want to start from basic either. Now im 15 and watching the katas for nostalgia. Its sad thinking that had I not moved to another place, by now I could have been a black belt.

This is the Shotokan version of the kata called Heian Godan. But close to all the traditional style practice this kata (called Pinan Godan in all other styles). Of the biggest karate styles in the world: Shitō-Ryū, Wadō-Ryū and Shotokan practice the Pinan/Heian katas.
