i had black belt and stopped karate because of university but that doesn't make me stop practicing the katas. karate is a way of life, is not about getting belts.
I have studied karate for 10 years. Had to stop because I went away from my hometown to study. I loved my teachers and my dojo, and never found any dojo that was what I wanted, because I wanted my old dojo with my old teachers. They taught me shotokan karate. And they taught me about where it came from, and always had many stories to tell about it. They didn't care about belts, although sometimes they gave some to students who deserved it and started lacking motivation. They didn't care about competition either. In my new town, I couldn't find a dojo that was not into competition and that was rather about learning about oneself and encouraging going to one's pace. It's been 5 years now. I have stopped looking for a dojo, will come back to karate if I ever want it again. Now i'm turning to something completely different and starting capoeira. I love the dialogue between the partners and the lack of competitiveness in it, and it pushes me to explore ways of concieving space that I hadn't found out yet. Will never stop practising katas and karate in general though. And maybe will explore katas in other, new ways ? Have fun with them, explore, find new ways to fight. I will never be a karate master. I will never be a capoeira master. There are plenty of people that are better than me in many ways out there. But I'm my own master, I'm going at my own pace and having fun, loving everything I do and doing some stuff I love, and it's enough for me.
Beautiful story! Very intriguing and inspirational (emotionally). If I may say so, I have experienced something similar. Because of school and several hardships in my youth I stopped going to my beloved dojo for seven years(!) I always walked around with regrets because I had stopped, sometimes quitting felt like failure. Recently I started doing Shotokan Karate again. I have grown a lot physically and mentally, and thus I decided to start training again at my old dojo, under the guidance of my “old” sensei (teachers). I feel like my former self again, and I proudly wear the same kyu I used to wear when I “quit”. I would recommend anyone who has trained karate for years, like me, to pick it up again, and if possible, to find the dojo where the person started with karate (if you have good memories of the place). It motivated me to be in touch with Zen once more. (Much respect is due for my inspiration, sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa, the man performing Heian Yondan in the video.) ❤️🥋
part of the beauty of his katas is how he ends exactly where he began, just as you're supposed to. his stances, his form, its all spot on, this guy is 10 dan for a reason.
this kata is great, i remember i entered a tournament when i was like eight years old and i won second place performing this one i hope to come back to my dojo and keep training, i miss it so much
Thank you, sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa! Your posts help me a lot to remember the kata's. Hope that all of us, who are posting here, will be able to do that things, when we shall have your age from now .
+Noora نورة you are right i think that if you are in white belt and you are training alot and you are really into it you are better than people with brown belt who is not training at all...
I completely agree with you. I have a black belt, but I’m pretty sure there are people with a « lower » belt whose technique is on-par or better than mine. The black belt just looks nice on a resume, the real satisfaction comes from the practice itself and the feeling of improvement.
I have a black belt in shotokan karate and I worked for 11 years to earn it and I am proud of it. The black belt has taught me that my journey is lifelong and just beginning. That’s where it stops for me. I love training and practicing katas and self defense because I have natural love for training. Belt or no belt. Humility, self discipline and the goal of continuing to develop in martial arts are worth more than any money can give me. Teaching and helping others is also important to me. First and foremost is to give back to others as others invested so much in me when I started training and progressed from one belt to another.
No Dojo where I live now, so I tried to keep on training. Tried several channels but nothing to do with this Sensei. He has the formal technique preserved ages from the rest. I show my respect indeed. Deeply thankful.
Sure, but that's a mere gimmick... Kanazawa was very good at it and it remains impressive when performed well (starting and ending on the cross), but ending right where you finished should be the least of your concerns when performing a kata! (It's not even that difficult at all to do!) Besides, outside of Shotokan, many kata don't end at all where they start.

Without karate, there is zero balance in life, this sensei is phenomenal, I've watched a few katas now and I'm inspired to say the least, thank you sensei... osu!!
many people judge karate as a sport saying that it's too much "beat the crap out of your opponent" but a true karateka is disciplined and could never harm a bee
These videos are extremely helpful in while training at home especially when learning a new kata. However, these vids look as if they were filmed during the 70's and since then, some of the katas have been revised and slightly changed. Even still, it's proven very helpful. I can learn all the moves of my new kata within the first day or two of getting my new belt and spend the rest of the time perfecting the moves before testing for my next belt.
I'm talking about Shotokan, i have a test next week to get the brown, but what i know is: Whit ---> Yellow ---> Orange ---> Green ---> Blue ---> Brown ---> Black

The katas in turn make each technique make more sense, as well as increasing your fluidity and snap value. Good luck! Its nice having these on here because between this and running through each kata in my head, I don't have to think when actually trying to perform it, which is as it should be.
I've only been training for 2 and a half years, and most of that time was spend in competitions. It's a good way to practice, meet friends, get advice, and have fun. Who knows, you may actually end up with a big trophy or something! I go not to win, but to meet other martial artists who not only can give me tips and advice, but can help me train. I suggest going to tournaments if you can afford it, they're loads of fun :D

Hello again, just wanted to thank you again for helping me achieve or advance from white belt, yellow belt, and my gold belt. Did it in about six weeks. Would not have happened if not for your precise well demonstrated Katas. Wanted to let you know that I am putting just as much if not more time into my technique and precision into my learning time. I have studied your Heian yondan and Godan. Even though I would not be allowed to advance any further than the gold belt at this time due to world karate association rules at least I will have the Katas memorized and perfected by the time those tests can be taken. I would like to make one small suggestion, can some of the more difficult Katas be done with your back to the audience for position orientation reasons. I sometimes get things backwards when the instructor is facing me. If not, no difference, I will still study you above any other. Thank you and stay safe brother.

It will work in a real fight, if you know how to use it. Every move in kata has its purpose. Obviously you will not start to perform a kata if you are surrounded by enemies, but you can always use the moves that you learned to block/counter/attack. If you will suceed or not, depends on your training... (sorry for my bad english ^^' )
