You have to assume that a weapon found in this pond has been involved in a crime , so the police should be happy to have them to compare firing pin and barrel markings against their database .
So the police are right , there are murderers might not want that evidence found, so if they see you searching , they may consider another couple of murders to stop you finding something that might convict them .

It’s kinda crazy that the officer asked them to bring it over to him. He has no clue what their experience with guns is. Did they check to see if it was loaded. For all we know it was chambered and could still fire.

By the way, the semi Automatic Pistol was a Stainless Steel AMT “Backup” .380 /9 mm Kurtz (Kurtz is German word for “Short”- so literally a 9mm Short). Actually a nice compact .380 Backup Handgun. Know more than one Officer that carries one in their jacket pocket as a “Backup” !

Back in 1983 I was working as a Deputy for Harris County (Houston, Tx area) at approximately 8:40 PM on June 11th, 1983 I made a traffic stop just off Hiway 59 north of Houston on the Harris County/Montgomery County line. The car was speeding and the license plate light was out. I called the stop in to Dispatch and gave my location. Another Unit said he would back me up (common procedure). As I approached the vehicle I noticed the passenger fidgeting. I explained who I was and why I stopped them. I asked if there was a reason why he was speeding to which he replied “No Boss, no reason I just wasn’t paying close enough attention”. (The term “Boss” is a term Prisoners in the south use when speaking to Police). I Asked for ID and Vehicle registration. In the process of getting the paperwork I noticed the butt of a weapon by the passenger. My back up had arrived by that time and I yelled “Gun!” Two more units arrived shortly and both taken into custody. Gave Dispatch their info and asked them to run them 10-28/10-29 and a “CCH”( wants and warrants and computerized criminal history thru NCIC {FBI National Crime Information Center}) Both were convicted felons with lengthy criminal history and Prison time. Shortly after my arrest of the two (I was still doing reports and booking sheets) a Texas Ranger, Phil Ryan( he was a Jerk!) walked in told me to give him my reports, that he was “Taking over and Control” of the two, that my work was “Done”. I started Protesting but my supervisor told me to “Shut Up and turn them over”. I explained I had been waiting on the CCH Print Out to which Ranger Ryan smiled and said “I have it”. It was then that I realized that something BIG was going on and it was. The name of the Two THAT I ARRESTED was HENRY LEE LUCAS & OTIS TOOLE!!! And when you see the history it only says Ranger Phil Ryan made the arrest for weapon charges! So yeah, I believe that there are murders around us and MOST you wouldn’t know- but when you feel your “flesh start crawling” you had better Pay attention.

Ask your law enforcement in the areas you magnet fish(particularly ponds) and see if you logging a GPS location when you find potential evidence from a crime would be desirable so that their divers could return to the actual spot where you found it for a more complete search. Handheld GPS is cheap and it might make them appreciate what you do more. All you would have to do is set a waypoint when you find something.

Just saying 🤪 because GPS isn't always 0,1 inch perfectly correct either. Idk, i would get annoyed having to go through gps files when i need to inspect the area anyways later on.

About five years ago, I was in the wood with my students, and they found an unexpoded hand granade. So I call the cops. The final comment from the policeman was something like 'why did you call us'.
They feel threatened when they realize anyone can do their job.
From a law enforcement point of view, we will do a firearm recovery report, do an ATF track, fire it(if possible) for ballistic/marking data, and return to registered owner if stolen. The firearm could be associated with any type of crime through any agency in the country, but they still have to determine a suspect. It could've been a pistol someone kept on them, and they accidentally dropped it in the lake while on a boat.
You should 3d print a cone for the top of the magnet to reduce the drag when you're pulling it up.

The gun is an AMT Backup produced by Arcadia Machine & Tool in Irwindale, California. Calibre is 380 ACP and it was first introduced in 1978

That's an AMT .380 pistol. I worked at a gun shop/range in northern California and a few officers carried them for a backup pistol because they are easily concealable.

Please, please, please,,,,,, take the time to learn some absolute safe firearm handling practices. You lasered your camera man, you buggy’s leg ,,,,, muzzle direction. You MUST assume all firearms are loaded and capable of firing. Some need 9 lbs pull and are pretty safe, others have been modified to a point they will go of when you sneeze,,,,,.
Just remember muzzle direction. You did awesome keeping your finger off the trigger. That’s a very big plus!

AMT is the same company that made the ".45 long slide with laser sighting" for Arnold in Terminator 1. That was the 1st all stainless 1911. This find shows the quality of their workmanship considering it was in water for any amount of time. So with that pistol, “Kurz” is the German word for “short”, and a .380 and a 9mm have the same diameter, but a 9mm is longer, so that just stated what cartridge this can take, so that particular pistol can take a regular .380 pistol cartridge or a 9mm short, so that’s what that means

The gun is an AMT Backup it's a .380 ACP pistol, it's a semi-automatic home defense pistol, manufactured by Ordnance Manufacturing Corporation of El Monte. And there's another type called the OMC backup
It's not a Home defense pistol, it's originally designed to be a backup gun for Police Officers. AMT stands for Arcadia Machine & Tool. I've owned the DAO version since 1994.
