Me at the beginning of the video: The answer’s gonna be different for different hair types. Amy at the end of the video: The answer is different for different hair types.
Same thought, but was hoping for more depth in regards to that element. Along with the scalp will adapt based on the product or lack of product, which takes multiple weeks and washes. with the 4 different approaches, it'd probably need to be at least a 4 month long experiment
Exactlyyyy. As someone with 3c hair, I love conditioner. Everyone in my family with straight hair? Swear up and down bout how AWFUL conditioner is. I literally cannot brush my hair without conditioner
@@danielstandford4930my hair is straight when it's less than shoulder length. If it goes past my shoulders, it starts to get wavy, then curly. My cousin is vice versa. We both absolutely hate our short hair when it comes to our styles and appearance. But, we both also hate the change in maintenance and care to our longer hair
Another thing to consider is your shower water itself! Some places, especially cities, have "hard water" which can make your hair dryer and more prone to an oily scalp. One thing to combat this is a shower filter-- but a cheaper option is to do a quick rinse of lukewarm water in your sink after your shower. This kind of locks in the products with a healthier water option. It has made my fine hair shiny, soft, and thick!
I agree the water you have is a big factor! I grew up with soft water, then moved somewhere with hard water and the difference was wild! I had to buy a filtered shower head in the end, because even with tons of conditioner my hair was still dry like straw and all sticky and tangled 😫
What helps me is every month or so using a very dilute apple cider vinegar like 1:10. It can be overdone which is why I do it so rarely but it strips all the nasty from the hard water.
As someone with thick curly hair that only just started actually taking care of it, I can't wait for the video where they talk about hair types. I never knew until about a year ago that I even actually had curly hair because of the type of shampoo I was using and only just recently heard about deep conditioning, leave-in conditioner, and double shampooing.
I have wavy hair and use 2-in-1 shampoo every other day, except on weekends, when I just let it be. I've noticed that waiting longer between washes leads to wavier waves, especially if I brush with a wave comb and gently hand twist my hair while still wet and allow to air dry. I do occasionally apply extra conditioner, but my major problem is my skin tends to break out with conditioners, and I'd honestly prefer flatter/frizzier hair over itchy/bumpy skin any day.
Warm water + shampoo then warm water + conditioner then cold water rinse has yielded best results for me since I was a teenager. For some reason, it also helps my scalp, which also get scaly if I don't do the cold water rinse.
Warm water is usually much harder because it comes from your hot water heater, where a lot of chemistry happens with those Ca and Mg ions, dramatically increasing their concentration. This deposits on your skin and results in the dryness
@@sarahcooper3751 Oh for sure! Calcium can really build up on your hair and make it harder to get it clean if you don’t have a water softener system and it’s something no one really notices unless you’ve lived with both. There’s also things you can put on your shower head I believe to help with that if you can’t afford a whole system
The way I was taught to use conditioner was to never apply it to your head, only the loose part of your hair. Basically pull it back into a pony tail and apply it to the tail only. I was happy to see the hot to cold trick, another point for contrast showering!
As an active and greasy teen with short hair in a hot summer, I would NOT HAVE survived if I used ANY conditioner then! However as the seasons change and I get less sweaty and overall less moist, conditioner quickly has become part of my routine again. Seasons, and age, and lifestyle of the person make a huge difference on hair care needs as well.
Definitely. When I was a teenager with chin length hair working at a summer camp, 2in1 was fine. Now that I have long hair that's curly and I understand how to take care of it, I need all the steps.
I’m mid twenties and still don’t use conditioner. Shampoo twice and sometimes hair masks. I wasn’t aware that sometimes greasy hair doesn’t go away as you age but I guess it makes sense if you’re on the finer hair side too 😕 Edit: I don’t overshower either, my hair/skin would be dry and awful if I did
Theory request: chapstick and other lip moisturizers. My wife says that products like chapstick and Burts Bees dries her lips out more than not using it. Meanwhile, I swear by Burts bees. Could you please do a theory on this subject? And include the Chanel lip moisturizer that is growing in popularity please?
i agree with ur wife, personally chapstick makes my lips dryer and therefore needing to use it more and more but if i wait out the dry lips, eventually it will go back to producing the right amount of oils and i think the chapstick replaces those oils, tricking the body into thinking its producing enough and thereby continuing to underproduce the oils
i also swear by burts bees! i go nuts if i don't have a chapstick in my pocket...but didn't have this problem in high school, when i didn't carry it with me. i wonder what happened.
I kinda wished there were more curly haired participants as well since the only ones that I could tell that have at the bare minimum have curly hair were Amy and the other guy I forget his name but he was brown skinned and had like an Afro curly hair I think he was on team hair care but I honestly can’t remember anyway as someone with 4c hair who has no clue who to take care of her hair (my mom does it) I would’ve appreciated some more curly haired participants to see how they turned out
@@harpurr53 Im aware of AJ being there and I'm not dissing the team Im just saying as a black man myself that itd be nice to see more for a more comprehensive test. But I also fully understand that they have constraints based on who is on their team and actually willing to do it.
9:37 The other two guys have less curl patterns than the other guy, obviously the other guy would need more moisture, plus his hair isn't exactly short, curly heads tend to have hair recoil making it look short. Honestly whished you'd consider different hair types and scalps cause everyone's routine is different 😭 The study isn't accurate cause you can't use the same products for everyone when everyone's hair length, the hair type and the scalp type are different.
Hi! I've been washing my hair with hot n cold water for a while now, a tip I've picked up on if you don't like cold showers is to just wash your hair in the sink, it helps with not getting your body shocked from the cold, and it feels pleasant for your scalp! :)
I also tried the hot n cold method in the shower. And I kept telling myself to imagine the water is tickeling... until it was actually cold. But after I washed my hair, I warmed myself up with hot water (because it's winter where I live), not my hair. And the end result was me getting the chin lenght vers of the Jaiden animations hair. Which is my goal in life: to have JaidenAnimation tuffty swoops behind my headphones.
Okay but I’ve got a ton of follow up questions! What about co-washing? Leave in conditioners? I just started my curly hair journey 2 months ago and am still a little clueless. Obsessed with Amy’s hair, I need to see more hair care theories! ❤
shampoo - conditioner - leave-in cream. let it air dry or use a *cold* hairdryer with the diffuser attachment. but never use a towel this is my recommendation for curly hair and it does wonders to me
conditioner only for most washings, shampoo at most twice a month unless hair is literally filled with dirth, no heat ever. keeps my hairs curly texture soft and managable.
Swavy curly Courtney and manes by Mell are two fantastic channels for guidance. They both go into the hair science more. But being on the more wavy/curly side, I've found Courtney to be more helpful for my hair type.
I’ve been told by professional stylists that my hair is an uncommon type. I have thin, fine curly hair, and I have a lot of hair. It certainly explains why I’ve had so many terrible hair cuts. At this point I just cut it myself. It’s either that or go to a high end salon to find a super experienced stylist that actually knows how to work with my hair, which is super expensive.
I feel that as allergies and just sensibility have become more prevalent cologne and perfume have lost their attraction. Also, historically we have used perfume and cologne to hide health problems and poor cleaning habits that are not as common as they were.
You should also do a theory on how to dry your hair after washing it! Should we use a hairdryer, or a towel, or just let it air-dry? Cause recently I started ditching the hairdryer even now when the weather is colder cause it tangles my hair so much and also makes it really frizzy...
I wished this video tackled hair porosity as having either high, medium or low porosity hair can easily effect how your hair absorbs in moisture and how fast it releases moisture.
Thank you for making this video!!! I remember when the shampoo one came out I was enraged(comedically) at Matpat's claim that conditioner does nothing and as a life-long, long-hair haver with moisture issues who lived in a DRY environment I have been praying for style theory to prove him wrong. I love the shower series!!!! the shampooing one and the shaving legs one has changed my shower habits for the better and I'm more confident, more comfortable, and am saving money!
Personally conditioner is my life-saver. I've got curls that translate to waves when long but maintain a short curl underlayer that can get SUPER frizzy. Conditioner is what makes it possible to brush my hair without it hurting from tough snarls every step of the way.
I can't wait to see the "hair type" video when it comes out. I have extremely oily hair and an extremely dry scalp. It makes no sense, and would love to hopefully find something that would explain this. I'm sure I can't be the only person with this phenomenon
There’s actually multiple reasons this happens. I’m sure some derm has made a video on it at some point. Try Nizoral. If that doesn’t work, exfoliating scalp treatment
Why wait when there’s many UA-camrs out there that have explained it already lol. There’s something in your routine that’s making it like that, what exactly are you doing?
13:03 this is so funny. my mom always said that, but she never read and study the 2in1 and the ingredients, she just knew 'cause she's mom. she used to tell me that in case of using 2in1 i should apply a little bit of conditioner on my ends to feel my hair normal
Personal experience has always been that it depends on length. I only cut my hair once every 3-4 months when it gets long enough to be a bother and I do find that conditioner makes it feel more manageable when the hair is decently long.
I appreciate that you added Nicole to this episode to represent someone who fries and dyes their hair like I do, it changes the texture and health of my hair so much that I can tell when my roots have grown out just by feel
Theory idea: does different lengths between washing hair make a major difference? Like, I only wash my hair about once a week, or if it smells weird, for both shampoo and conditioner. Does washing more frequently make your body produce more sebum to try to conpensate for removing it and lead to greasy hair more quickly?
Yes. It makes a huge difference. Many hairdressers actually recommend that you only wash your hair with a minimum of 3 days between washes for a more healthy hair, so I would assume that washing it once a week is even better for the hair.
Same here I am a psoriasis suffer so I found out years and years ago that I wasn't told as a kid a friend who was going to Beauty School her teacher told her to tell me to not wash my hair but once a week cuz you're stripping the natural oils out and that's why you get the flaking and your hair looking like horse hair also my hairdresser told me to put a lot of conditioner in my hair leave it in for an hour then rinse it out so my hair doesn't look frizzy
I have really thick hair for a caucasian person, like a 3b or 3c. I've always had an oily scalp with dry hair until recently when I watched a video explaining what I could be doing wrong. I forget which UA-camr said this, he's a bald hairstylist, but he said to stop conditioning your scalp, especially if you have bad dandruff or have an extra oily scalp. AND, he recommended the classic shampoo twice method, and if you use shower conditioner, don't use leave-in conditioner and vise versa. SO, once a week-ish, I would shampoo my hair twice in one shower and apply leave-in conditioner every morning, avoiding putting the conditioner on my scalp. This really works for me - my hair has been the best it's ever been.
I found no noticeable difference with a hot a cold method however if I absolutely need conditioner if I was to brush my hair I prefer two separate products over two in one
if the cold is uncomfortable, you can try gradually cooling down the shower, so your body can get used to the change instead of just jumping in. It's like stepping into a pool, how at first it's cold, but then you naturally adapt to the temperature. maybe it doesn't need to be too cold, but like room temperature and it could still work
As someone with long hair that's fairly dry in the mids to ends and extremely oily at the roots, I do not let conditioner anywhere near my scalp. I used 2-in-1s when I was a younger teenager until a stylist finally convinced me I needed to be washing with both separately for my hair type and I will never forget the advice she gave me. I only use shampoo on my scalp and the ponytail area. Basically massage into a lather and then come that lather through the first inch or two of my hair, right where my fist closes when gathering my hair into a ponytail. When I rinse my hair, the lather running down to my ends is enough to get the rest clean. Then I condition from the other side of that ponytail area all the way down! The shampoo washes what it's really needed for without fully striping down the ends those oils will never reach again, and the conditioner moisturizes and protects everything that is not already getting all it needs from the natural oils.
TEAM CONDITIONER 4 EVER! I have thick long 4B hair type, and the most important thing my hair needs is moisture. Conditioner really helps my curl patterns to stay together and not frizz out, while also making it soft!
@@DrCocofruit That's so interesting to me. I know there are various types of hair, so I'm looking forward to seeing her cover it in another video, but my hair personally is mixed-race and different strands are fine, others are coarse, but as a whole it wants leave-in conditioner at least in certain areas of it. (my hair is so weird)
loved watching this as an apprentice hairdresser - everyone who works at my salon washes their hair with cooler/cold water because it not only keeps moisture from conditioner: it keeps your vivid colours in order. If your vivid are not lasting the way you want them, cold washes, I promise they're not a scam!!!
Regarding the long hair feeling dry without a conditioner- it's possible that you are just washing it way to often! A few years ago I watched a video from a doctor who said that the reason your hair "dry out" so fast after shower is because you don't let the natural oils to build up & do their thing before you wash them all again. And as so, the doctor warned from washing hair every day, and said that you need to wash only every other 2-3 days. That way you let the natural hair oils to build up & smooth your hair other those 2-3 days, while not leaving it for long enough to make your hair greasy. Washing every day would prevent the oil buildup, leaving it to dry out more often and force you to add moisturizing in yourself to cover up on it.
This is definitely true for my hair, I can't wash it everyday or it gets super dry and brittle and frizzy. I think using heat to dry and/or style your hair makes a difference too. Heat makes the dryness way worse for me, and adding product doesn't help because my hair is very fine and just gets weighed down / greasy looking.
I would very much appreciate an episode on dandruff because it used to be a big problem for me now not that much but I've been feeling very itchy for days on because of dandruff. Nowadays it's not really that much of a problem
Having had to take a lot of cold showers in my life (siblings), I have to admit that I laughed hard when the last method worked out the best for most of the participants. I'm also really glad that I don't have to worry about that sort of thing anymore.
as a someone with thick wavy hair (that sometimes poops out a nice curl or 2)and a dry and itchy scalp, i shampoo every 2-3 days and use conditioner on my ends once every 2 weeks i use rosemary coconut oil on my scalp to promote growth & help with dry scalp/ flaking, as well as a leave in hair mask on my ends, i double shampoo after that
As someone with a super oily scalp, conditioner is death. I have to wash my hair every 2-3 days or it tints darker and gets all stuck into strands, no nice flow or anything. The only thing I use is head and shoulders shampoo twice during the shower (I've tried other brands and this one works best). For context my hair is straight, shoulder lenght.
If your hair is naturally super oily, Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner will help immensely. Washing with shampoo twice(once or twice a week) will help clean your hair better and then using conditioner will help make your hair softer.
I always knew I had dry hair so once I tried the hot and cold method I swore by it, but couldn't understand why my hair still wasn't as moisturized as I wanted so I included a leave in conditioner but nothing changed until I heard about hair Porosity. Hair Porosity has three levels low, medium, and high. It identifies how open your hair cuticles or "scales" are. By using the *cup test I discovered I had low Porosity hair meaning my "scales" were very closed and couldn't obtain moisture unless they were opened by warm water, so I ditched the cold water and continued with the leave in conditioner and my hair was finally what I always dreamed it'd be. Plus knowing your hair Porosity means you can learn what oils work best for your hair, Hint: Coconut oil is low porosity's enemy 😤 Now this doesn't mean the hot and cold method doesn't work, it just works better for someone with high Porosity hair because their "scales" are wide open and struggle to close. This matters because if they're always open then the moisture will just wash away. I encourage everyone to find out what their hair type and Porosity is to create the best hair care routine that best suits your needs. Happy learning ❤️ *The cup test is a method used to identify hair Porosity. Get a clear cup and fill it with lukewarm water. Then place a strand of hair in the cup. Make sure it doesn't stick to the edges and is fully submerged. Wait five minutes to view results. If the hair strand is at the top you have low Porosity, middle means medium Porosity, and bottom means high Porosity.
as a shampoo only person, i dont use it cause my hair is a greese ball- in hours after a triple wash of my hair it can be grease to the touch again. i at most use a scalp hydratorsense i have an oily hair and wet scalp yet also danruft, an odd combo
I've actually got some insights into this one: dandruff isn't usually a dry scalp thing, it's more to do with stuff like genetics and overactive yeast. So you can have dry scalp with dandruff or wet scalp with dandruff.
What the other two comments say. I the same way, and I been using tea tree oil since I was a teen. I know what happens without it, Ug! Tea tree head and shoulders is the best thing ever for my scalp. But a normal tea tree shampoo will work.
i used to have dandruff and oily hair as well. started using a 2 in 1 and saw the problem basically get fixed. my scalp was getting too dry from washing it, which would cause the dandruff, and then i guess the skin would start overproducing oils to combat it, which would make my hair greasy
My parents always told me that you really only need conditioner if you have long hair, and want it to stay straight. Never used it myself since my genes give me a natural perm, like it or not.
For me, conditioner doesn't make my hair straight at all, but it does help with keeping my long hair healthier. My hair hasn't been straight since high school cause of hormones and genes and... messing around with a Curling iron 😅
My (shoulder-length, probably like 3A-ish) hair has gotten considerably curlier since I started using conditioner, specifically a shea butter based one. Went from frizzy and generally unkempt to strongly defined curls basically after one use. Also, the natural sun-based highlights just went crazy.
Please try the curly method! It includes taking out the sulfates from shampoo and silicones from conditioner and using different methods than a typical routine.
So I have combined my shampoo and conditioner into the same bottle. Two different bottles originally, now combined. I did the method of hot water and then finishing with cold water. My hair feels so soft and I'm really happy and relaxed ❤️
So uhhh, what if you don't use Shampoo at all? It dries my hair out regardless of how much conditioner I use afterwards. But for a while now I've actually only use Conditioner 😬 It works! Maybe I have super dry hair, but using Conditioner only helps my hair not go very frizzy, and still cleans and washes away any dirt from the day!
Nice to know that cold showers help, cuz I don't have access to hot showers. Like when I say "shower" that means cold shower. I've been shampoo only guy, short hair and it's fine. So maybe I'll try conditioner
I actually tried the same concept for the hot into cold shower a few months ago. I have never found a hair care routine that has ever helped me. Ive tried 2 in 1, ive tired individual shampoo and conditioner. Ive even used undiluted hair products straight from manufacture that dont foam up. Absolutely nothing has ever stopped my hair from absolutely frizzing up and tangling immediately.
I've been doing the hot and cold method for a year (plus shampoo and conditioner) but now and my hair has never looked better! The curls are defined and so soft. But to take into consideration, i have dry hair, low porosity, slight curls, and short hair. So this won't work for everyone, but it works great for me! :D
I love the shower videos!! Not necessarily bc you’re in the shower, but because I’m learning the science behind hygiene (which I think is super important). Thanks for shining some light!
strange, I sort of do the hot/cold method but the other way! I usually take cold showers until we're absolutely in winter weather, but I end with hot water because my hair doesn't take in my conditioner or mousse well when cold. Maybe I'll actually give the reverse a try now
I tend not to use conditioner due to my short hair; only shampoo or 2 in 1 products. I feel like conditioner just makes my hair oily. While trying out the hot and cold method, I noticed that my hair is less oily and it has become softer. Another thing I noticed is that the conditioner I had used to try out the method contained an alternative to quats. So maybe that is why my hair felt less oily. Might try the hot and cold method more often! My hair color: dark brown
I'm a black person with 4c hair and I have to use conditioner otherwise my hair will be so dry I can actually snap parts of it off :) Anyway, tried the hot/cold method after this video and unfortunately got some mixed results. My fringe specifically came out really dry, but everywhere else seems to have stayed silky.
Shampoo is for your oily roots and conditioner is for your dry tips. Don't scrub in tangle causing circles. Massage the scalp and run you fingers through the tips. Matt Patt doesn't believe in conditioner because his hair is too short to notice dry tips
You do all know that black peoples scalps are different from white peoples scalps so is our hair texture and the way we need to take care of our hair you all should take a hair type Quiz it really helped me out
This is also because sweat contains melanin. So the more melanin in the skin, the more melanin in your sweat. It's also the reason why the darker your skin, the shinier it is. The shine has nothing to do with the color itself.
Awesome Episode! I Would if love it if you guys could try out how the Minerals in the water also has an impact on hair care. for example, I live in Berlin, Germany, where we have really hard water which also has an effect on how the hair feels after washing. My roommate used to even wash her hair out with apple cider vinegar to get the lime out for softer hair
This is my biggest issue! Growing up I had great water. Once I moved out I ended up in an apartment with hard water and now no matter what I do my hair is never as smooth as it used to be. The hard water also makes my skin itch when I get out of the shower.
@@YuniX2 I lived in a place like that during university. I ended up buying a filtered shower head and it made a huge difference! I'd recommend looking for one, if you can. I don't think mine was very expensive, I got it online for around $30.
I'm a 31 year old White Man who cares about my hair, therefore I do use Conditioner because it does help keep my hair healthier. I only use the more natural/herbal/Tea Tree shampoos & conditioners, also my hair is naturally wavy. 0:15
would love to see some tests on no-shampoo, though it would also mean a longer testing period to allow your hair to acclimate. i've been no-shampoo for about 10 months now, and my hair has never been better!
i feel like the main thing that i have to take into consideration when doing this on myself is the fact that I don't just use one shampoo, I use 2 because of my dandruff and I don't clean my hair as often due to one it not exactly being healthy for your hair to clean it every day (especially in lava hot water like how i typically like it) and 2 it makes the color in my hair fade quicker because of it being dyed vivids and not natural hair colors. But as for the results it turned out pretty silky smooth but not as soft and poofy as I like it. I should also mention that I did not use the same products as used in the video so my data may be void but I thought I'd pitch in anyway.
I tried the hot and cold water thing and the results were absolutely amazing! My hair didn’t get tangled, it is so soft, and it’s overall just the best it’s ever been!
I have fairly short and somewhat wavy hair that gets greasy pretty quickly, and find that conditioner just makes my hair greasy faster rather than softer even if I put it on the ends and fully wash it out. My hair doesn't really seem to get dried out with only shampoo, so I generally avoid conditioner products. I do use conditioner on my extensions though, since they seem to get frizzy if I don't use it on them, unlike my natural hair. I do only wash my hair every other day though, so I suspect I might need conditioner if I washed my hair every day.
Yeah since you have short hair conditioner isn’t really needed. I’d suspect why your hair gets greasy often is because you wash every other day. It’s not recommended to wash every day so I’d go longer in between washes. When you wash often your hair over compensates because your natural oils are stripped, and it creates more oils and grease in return.
I have like 3a curly hair only use conditioner to help separate tangles during a shower. After that I use leave-in conditioner to help fully brush through. Works pretty well and keeps frizz down for a couple solid days.
This episode feels like it really needed to talk more with hair types because that is how you can figure out with how to properly wash and care for your hair. I remember at work, I was talking with some coworkers about hair washing. And one of them looked at me like I was crazy when I said that I only use shampoo once every one to two weeks on average. But some of my other coworkers who have either similar hair as mine or curlier hair said that they do the same as me with washing with shampoo. But then we also use a lot of things to add moisture like conditioner masks and things like that. Hair routines are mainly going to be dependent on hair type. If somebody has a 2a hair texture, their hair routine is going to look very different from somebody who has a 3a. A person with 3a hair doing the routine for a 2a hair would make their hair brittle and dry while the reverse for the 2a doing the 3a hair routine would feel like a grease pit.
I’m a redhead with REALLY thick, but short hair. I have the worst dry scalp but my hair gets super oily (and heavy) super quickly. I tend to prefer methods that are more drying because the heavy oily-ness really irritates me and I’d rather deal with the constant itchiness of a dry scalp. I’ve had the best experience with 2 in 1 products, but it’s far from perfect and I’m still at a loss for what to do. If you guys do make a video about specific hair types, please include general care advice for each one because I’m suffering over here 😢
I'll still watch the video, but I've been conducting this experiment myself and the answer is NO! At least for me. Hair masks to recover from things like coloring, and a few spritzes of natural moisturizers after drying my hair and it's healthier than in my entire life. And yes, cold water is definitely better, but i also have self respect so I only do it after coloring as a repair thing.
I have been on the hot and cold method since I was a teen. My aunt is a hairdresser and taught me. It is great for keeping my hair soft and also helps preserve my color/curl if I have it done.
Haven't scientist proved it red? I think Hank Green talked about it. Something like red makes you look more hot but aggressive, and blue makes you look less attractive but wiser. I think. Doesn't hurt to have a theory about it.
You should make a video of testing what type of shampoo and conditioner you should use, basing on the price, and how it makes you feel after. and please make the video of diagnosing your hair 🫶💖💖💖
Oh, and question, if use the hot and cold method, after using cold water, and rinsed out the conditioner, if you turn on the warm water to get warm, would that ruin the process?
As someone with straight hair that gets horribly tangled cause it sticks to itself conditioner is a necessity. I tried going without it NEVER AGAIN!!!!!
Me at the beginning of the video: The answer’s gonna be different for different hair types.
Amy at the end of the video: The answer is different for different hair types.
Ya I figured that too
Same thought, but was hoping for more depth in regards to that element. Along with the scalp will adapt based on the product or lack of product, which takes multiple weeks and washes. with the 4 different approaches, it'd probably need to be at least a 4 month long experiment

soft water is my fav for washing hair. It makes such a difference.
ye my area has super hard water, it even blocks my shower sometimes.
I've had to start using leave-in conditioner after each hairwash
What helps me is every month or so using a very dilute apple cider vinegar like 1:10. It can be overdone which is why I do it so rarely but it strips all the nasty from the hard water.
As someone with thick curly hair that only just started actually taking care of it, I can't wait for the video where they talk about hair types. I never knew until about a year ago that I even actually had curly hair because of the type of shampoo I was using and only just recently heard about deep conditioning, leave-in conditioner, and double shampooing.
Yeah I need leave-in conditioners a lot.
I didn't know mine was curly because I brushed it. I just thought my hair was dry and frizzy for no reason.
Yeaaah, curly haired person who looked at the title and thought ...yes? absolutely? but i haven't watched the video yet tbf
same, i had wavy/ curly hair and i didn’t even know
I have wavy hair and use 2-in-1 shampoo every other day, except on weekends, when I just let it be. I've noticed that waiting longer between washes leads to wavier waves, especially if I brush with a wave comb and gently hand twist my hair while still wet and allow to air dry.
It depends on an absolute ton of factors including, but not limited to: hair type, water hardness, pollution levels, stress ect. ect.
We have WATER HARDNESS to worry about too now?! Man just when I started to feel like I was understanding the idea of hair care..
@@sarahcooper3751 yeah... It's weird
Id figure local climate humidity would affect hair too.
@SmokeandSpirit DEFINITELY!! If it's even slightly wet like foggy or something then my hair goes completely flat! If its warm it poofs up!
I have to stop using conditioner because of my greasy hair. For at least 2 decades. But, in the last year or so I have to return to use it again.
Definitely. When I was a teenager with chin length hair working at a summer camp, 2in1 was fine. Now that I have long hair that's curly and I understand how to take care of it, I need all the steps.
So true
I’m mid twenties and still don’t use conditioner. Shampoo twice and sometimes hair masks. I wasn’t aware that sometimes greasy hair doesn’t go away as you age but I guess it makes sense if you’re on the finer hair side too 😕
Edit: I don’t overshower either, my hair/skin would be dry and awful if I did
Theory request: chapstick and other lip moisturizers.
My wife says that products like chapstick and Burts Bees dries her lips out more than not using it. Meanwhile, I swear by Burts bees. Could you please do a theory on this subject? And include the Chanel lip moisturizer that is growing in popularity please?
i agree with ur wife, personally chapstick makes my lips dryer and therefore needing to use it more and more
but if i wait out the dry lips, eventually it will go back to producing the right amount of oils
and i think the chapstick replaces those oils, tricking the body into thinking its producing enough
and thereby continuing to underproduce the oils
i also swear by burts bees! i go nuts if i don't have a chapstick in my pocket...but didn't have this problem in high school, when i didn't carry it with me. i wonder what happened.
Another aspect I wish you addressed is the affect of hair type has. A few more black testers of different hair types. For example Type 3B 3C 4A 4B 4C
oh nooo, they didn't have anyone with any of the type 4 hairs?? D:
They did have one person with type 4 hair but yes I would be happier if there were more

They have to use the same product for everyone thats how experiments work. They just proved that everyones needs are different.
Please, do an episode about Hair Types, please!
Style theory is literally the most practical channel it's the only one that's made me actually change my habbits
THANK YOU for finally having a diverse test group, ESPECIALLY important for a hair episode.
Okay but I’ve got a ton of follow up questions! What about co-washing? Leave in conditioners? I just started my curly hair journey 2 months ago and am still a little clueless. Obsessed with Amy’s hair, I need to see more hair care theories! ❤
shampoo - conditioner - leave-in cream. let it air dry or use a *cold* hairdryer with the diffuser attachment. but never use a towel
this is my recommendation for curly hair and it does wonders to me
Also using natural bristle brushes for straight hair types
conditioner only for most washings, shampoo at most twice a month unless hair is literally filled with dirth, no heat ever. keeps my hairs curly texture soft and managable.
Swavy curly Courtney and manes by Mell are two fantastic channels for guidance. They both go into the hair science more. But being on the more wavy/curly side, I've found Courtney to be more helpful for my hair type.
If your hair is really dry always use Moisturizer don't wash Curly hair everyday that dries it out but brush it everyday
Theory idea: can perfume/cologne make you more attractive?
Oi oi oi😏
To those of us with allergies... no. Not at all.
Definitely
I feel that as allergies and just sensibility have become more prevalent cologne and perfume have lost their attraction. Also, historically we have used perfume and cologne to hide health problems and poor cleaning habits that are not as common as they were.
Just watch regular show and you'll find out
You should also do a theory on how to dry your hair after washing it!
Yes a hair type episode would be so great
I can't wait to see the "hair type" video when it comes out. I have extremely oily hair and an extremely dry scalp. It makes no sense, and would love to hopefully find something that would explain this. I'm sure I can't be the only person with this phenomenon
That's my child too.
That's actually really cool
Personal experience has always been that it depends on length.
I only cut my hair once every 3-4 months when it gets long enough to be a bother and I do find that conditioner makes it feel more manageable when the hair is decently long.
This has honestly become one of the most helpful channels on UA-cam.
Dan has a shocking amount of charisma for a non-host.
It's always kind of a treat when we get Dan in a video.
Also, get a new static headshot for Dan. Cause hair down Dan is a look.
I desperately want him to get his own channel!
@@CharmedPop He does have his own channel, but doesn't post on it anymore, That Cybert Channel
I miss times when he host some episodes.
YES this is exactly it. I also wash about once a week. Your hair will over compensate. Just find what works for you and your hair type/length.
yes, you can train your hair’s sebum production!
@@Pauavi Derms disagree. Hair dressers agree. I’m going to agree with the derms.
Yep grab your hair like you are gonna put it up in a ponytail with conditioner in your hands and work down from there
I found no noticeable difference with a hot a cold method however if I absolutely need conditioner if I was to brush my hair I prefer two separate products over two in one
please, Please PLEASE, do an episode on hair care types. I NEED to figure out what mine is and I have no idea where to start!!
if the cold is uncomfortable, you can try gradually cooling down the shower, so your body can get used to the change instead of just jumping in.
As a black person ill just say yes
Leave in conditioner on top of regular conditioner is the best for my hair
As a black person I'll say it depends on the brand, because some just suck
As a black person who hates the feeling of conditioner, ill just say no
@@DrCocofruit That's so interesting to me. I know there are various types of hair, so I'm looking forward to seeing her cover it in another video, but my hair personally is mixed-race and different strands are fine, others are coarse, but as a whole it wants leave-in conditioner at least in certain areas of it. (my hair is so weird)
Weird flex but ok
loved watching this as an apprentice hairdresser - everyone who works at my salon washes their hair with cooler/cold water because it not only keeps moisture from conditioner: it keeps your vivid colours in order.
Heat makes the dryness way worse for me, and adding product doesn't help because my hair is very fine and just gets weighed down / greasy looking.
the hot and cold method is amazing my hair was so so soft and smooth
OMG early!! Thank you for making this. As a curly girl, conditioner is my life.

I would very much appreciate an episode on dandruff because it used to be a big problem for me now not that much but I've been feeling very itchy for days on because of dandruff. Nowadays it's not really that much of a problem
I am so jealous of Dan's luscious locks with no conditioner 😭 why was I born this way?!
I tried rinsing the conditioner with cold water and I love the results! This will probably become my new hair wash routine
Having had to take a lot of cold showers in my life (siblings), I have to admit that I laughed hard when the last method worked out the best for most of the participants. I'm also really glad that I don't have to worry about that sort of thing anymore.
as a someone with thick wavy hair (that sometimes poops out a nice curl or 2)and a dry and itchy scalp, i shampoo every 2-3 days and use conditioner on my ends
once every 2 weeks i use rosemary coconut oil on my scalp to promote growth & help with dry scalp/ flaking, as well as a leave in hair mask on my ends, i double shampoo after that
As someone with a super oily scalp, conditioner is death. I have to wash my hair every 2-3 days or it tints darker and gets all stuck into strands, no nice flow or anything. The only thing I use is head and shoulders shampoo twice during the shower (I've tried other brands and this one works best). For context my hair is straight, shoulder lenght.
i second this
Yea cause your hair is short conditioner isn’t necessary, but I’d recommend trying to find a different brand 😭
@@oreoslush it's not that short, think Matt Mercer cut.
Which brands would you recommend?
If your hair is naturally super oily, Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner will help immensely.
Washing with shampoo twice(once or twice a week) will help clean your hair better and then using conditioner will help make your hair softer.
Personally I have a really oily scalp, conditioner is fine on my hair. I have wavy medium length hair though
Plus knowing your hair Porosity means you can learn what oils work best for your hair,
Hint: Coconut oil is low porosity's enemy 😤
Now this doesn't mean the hot and cold method doesn't work, it just works better for someone with high Porosity hair because their "scales" are wide open and struggle to close. This matters because if they're always open then the moisture will just wash away. I encourage everyone to find out what their hair type and Porosity is to create the best hair care routine that best suits your needs. Happy learning ❤️
*The cup test is a method used to identify hair Porosity.
Tea tree mint or peppermint, or some kind of mint shampoo and or conditioner will help immensely.
It sounds like you might actually be making your scalp too dry & it's overproducing oil to compensate
I LOVE cold showers! It reminds me of more of a natural stream and seems fresher and cleaner
My parents always told me that you really only need conditioner if you have long hair, and want it to stay straight. Never used it myself since my genes give me a natural perm, like it or not.
My hair gets oily more so that's why I don't use it, so it gets back really quick
Also, the natural sun-based highlights just went crazy.
that's kind of crazy to me since curly hair usually needs more moisture lol (not just conditioner but leave in creams as well)
im pretty sure conditioner makes it more curly

Please try the curly method! It includes taking out the sulfates from shampoo and silicones from conditioner and using different methods than a typical routine.

So uhhh, what if you don't use Shampoo at all? It dries my hair out regardless of how much conditioner I use afterwards. But for a while now I've actually only use Conditioner 😬
It works! Maybe I have super dry hair, but using Conditioner only helps my hair not go very frizzy, and still cleans and washes away any dirt from the day!
I think you should try using a leave in conditioner or hair mask after washing your hair with a shampoo
It would be great if there was actually more hair types because in the 3 & 4 type because it does help
Did you miss the black man
Nice to know that cold showers help, cuz I don't have access to hot showers. Like when I say "shower" that means cold shower.
I've been shampoo only guy, short hair and it's fine. So maybe I'll try conditioner
Really great episode Style team. Unfortunately I will NOT be doing the Cold shower method 😭😭
15:45 exactly! cold shower suck so bad that its actually unreal. also it triggers migraine for me sometimes :I
I love the shower videos!!
Maybe I'll actually give the reverse a try now
Honestly I'm like Amy, my hair is like silk when not tangled but even after drying its just tangled and after 2 days its a bird's nest.

I'm a black person with 4c hair and I have to use conditioner otherwise my hair will be so dry I can actually snap parts of it off :)
Anyway, tried the hot/cold method after this video and unfortunately got some mixed results.

This is also because sweat contains melanin. So the more melanin in the skin, the more melanin in your sweat.
It's also the reason why the darker your skin, the shinier it is. The shine has nothing to do with the color itself.
Theory Idea: What is the right way to dry your hair?
Have been doing the hot and cold for as long as I can remember. Really does work wonders
I believe there is another factor which is where your body has adjusted to your routine. I suspect it has a bigger impact than anyone realizes.

Same. Tea tree is my best friend. I love it so much.
@kingzach74 Yep, though it is sooooo expensive that I can only use it occasionally for special occasions:(
Oooh I should use more tea tree ones! I remember my hair looking a little better when I used them
would love to see some tests on no-shampoo, though it would also mean a longer testing period to allow your hair to acclimate. i've been no-shampoo for about 10 months now, and my hair has never been better!
What about cowashing? Using conditioner instead of shampoo
i feel like the main thing that i have to take into consideration when doing this on myself is the fact that I don't just use one shampoo, I use 2 because of my dandruff and I don't clean my hair as often due to one it not exactly being healthy for your hair to clean it every day (especially in lava hot water like how i typically like it) and 2 it makes the color in my hair fade quicker because of it being dyed vivids and not natural hair colors. But as for the results it turned out pretty silky smooth but not as soft and poofy as I like it. I should also mention that I did not use the same products as used in the video so my data may be void but I thought I'd pitch in anyway.
I'm sorry. I need that SpiderGwen one-piece. I NEED IT.
20:22 this does make sense when you got ot eh barbour( asian at least) the last stage is always cold)
I take a fifty/fifty shower. Half hot to start, and cold to finish. But I have to shower basically every day bc I have super oily, super short hair.
I was wondering this yesterday in the shower so happy you guys made a video on it!
1:00 If anyone other than the theorists lists "shower experiment videos" as an employment requirement, run!
*Theory Idea: What color combinations make you look the most attractive?*
This!👆And what products help it last longer with less fading?
Haven't scientist proved it red? I think Hank Green talked about it. Something like red makes you look more hot but aggressive, and blue makes you look less attractive but wiser. I think. Doesn't hurt to have a theory about it.
They did a color theory episode back with matpat.
depends entirely on your own colors as in nuances in skin color, hair color etc
@@catherinebaldwin6580But what about blue AND red?!?
You should make a video of testing what type of shampoo and conditioner you should use, basing on the price, and how it makes you feel after. and please make the video of diagnosing your hair 🫶💖💖💖
Oh, and question, if use the hot and cold method, after using cold water, and rinsed out the conditioner, if you turn on the warm water to get warm, would that ruin the process?
@@ramills01no. You can also just rinsed your hair in warm water.
as a black person with mostly 3c hair NOT using conditioner and detangling means going bald (haven't finished the video yet)
I would love a hair type episode. I learn so much from these episodes.
So excited for the hair type episode
As someone with straight hair that gets horribly tangled cause it sticks to itself conditioner is a necessity. I tried going without it NEVER AGAIN!!!!!
SAME!!! I SWEAR my hair will tangle itself 5 minutes after brushing it D':
