The lack of comparing different brands of the same shape makes me doubt whether it's the shape of the packaging or the brand being more honest about their products.
maybe they could do a follow up episode where they compare different brands, but they kept the brand the same bc changing 2 variables in an experiment makes the results less accurate.
Yeah, there was a lot misleading here. like using the original price to turn into an amount "saved" or "lost". When that price could vary widely by brands, and as you mentioned, whether they err upwards or downwards on grams is also variable. Plus, the exact same product from the same brand might vary in grams based on the standard deviation they allow.
@@KM-nu7vj that and it also relies in the price point being reasonable for the quality of the formula not just the quantity. I'd far rather get a tenth the product of something that works for my skin than something cheap but cakey.

Problem with this math: something can be way overpriced, understate the grams but still have deceptive packaging, and it looks like it has this huge increase in "money saved". A better version would be taking the total price divided by the usable grams, to get the price per gram to compare. This truly shows how losing product (or gaining) can affect the price by weight, without having the overpriced items just look better because they cost more per gram to begin with.
I fully agree since in general most liquid eyeshadow are more pigmented than the powders. So you'd get more use from them but it would show as "less product" if you were just weighing it.
The problem with this whole experiment is that it didn't do a control before any of these rediculous "let's dump everything into a container to see what happens" scenarios.
24:57 that plastic ring isn't trying to scam us guys 😭 its there to secure the product, without the liquid lipstick comes out, if u take it out and close it like that the content leaks :/
Same goes for Milani blush. Thicker packaging is caused by the different manufacturing process of baked cosmetic items, it's not to fool us there is more product.
Fun fact: I’ve been taking these things out of my lipstick for years bc of how much more product I get. I wait till it’s nearly empty. Saved me lots of money.
I know this is kinda a fun theory, but the methodology is all wrong. Some of the products have their packaging a certain way because of their consistency, or to avoid it drying out. Product of a different consistency in the same packaging would give a different result, so testing only one is a fun experiment, but introducing the results like they were conclusive is misleading.
yea it's pretty obvious that those felt tip stuff are not meant to be drained from full to empty in one go. clearly, all that vigorous action would accelerate product loss too. the idea is there, but the methodology is far from rigorous enough.

I feel the felt-tip eyeliner was done very wrong. The force put upon the tip in testing was WAY more than we use when applying the product to our eyes. The destruction of the tip, and subsequent inability to get any more of the product out, is not a 1:1 comparison to the actual use of the product. I'm not saying there's no waste...waste is automatic with all make-up products...but this test was not a fair one, in my opinion.
I had the exact same thought about the felt tip eyeliner experiment. Of course the tip will be ruined when you scrub it around on a piece of paper, that's not how it's meant to be used.
@EmpressCirce huh. Didnt know that. I dont use makeup often but i have a few laying around (mainly family who uses them) that were just complaining about it drying out. Ill have to check if they can be flipped
Plastic stoppers are meant to 1) dispense the right amount of product on the applicator and 2) prevent the product from spilling out accidentally. I disagree that they’re a cheat or trick. You can take them off once you reach the bottom of the bottle to get some last product.
I wonder, it would be easier if you used this strategy: get two of the same product, empty one, clear it well and make sure no product is left inside, and measure the weight of both, and finally, basic math, full product - empty container = final weight of the product, and then measure again with almost empty containers to see the weight of wasted makeup.
Can be done with just one of the product, rather than two- to eliminate fill discrepancies across batches. 1-weigh when new to get total package weight. 2-remove all product into a new container…. 3-weigh the container containing what’s not accessible… 4-then thoroughly clean out old container.. 5- finally reweigh packaging to get base package weight. That’s how the beauty breakdown does it.

Why would you use the listed weight as opposed to measuring it yourself? Shouldn’t you measure it yourself so that you can get a more precise number, also accounting for any inaccuracy in your methods by standardizing them more?
Because you don't weigh the packaging before buying the product. When you're comparing prices per unit of product, you compare them by the listed weight.
@@deirennebecause some brands might list the weight/volume of their product alone and others try to be tricky and list the product and bottle together. That might be able to explain why some products gave you twice as much while others barely gave you half of the product.

Great video! I have never been a makeup or style person but I am always intrigued by the science and experiment involved in the theory ( and motivated to better my image to gain confidence) If there would be a part two, to weigh ml, a pycnometer would have been useful as it is used often to get a density for the product used. Weighing the product before use, after use, and after being washed clean and dry would show the weight of the bottle which in turn would tell the true weight of the product before and after use more accurately. The analytical balance is usually closed while weighing because the air and container used ( if not tare off ) adds unnecessary variables to the weight.
Thats why a great tip from makeup artists is to make a beauty blender slightly damp so the liquid foundation doesnt soak in as much (i just use clean fingertips as an application method which also works)

The difference between clothes that are expensive because of high quality and clothes that are expensive because of the branding is the sewing, since cheap fabrics can be made into decent clothes if the sewing itself well made
Pt 2 pls! It's great to learn more about makeup, since I had little knowledge of it, and it's one of the reasons I followed the channel
11:32 Instant age eraser? More like instant money eraser am I right? No? Nobody? Okay I'll stop
I'd love to see a follow up video with more data points. Maybe including ways to get some of the last of the product out of a nearly empty container, such as using a lipstick brush to truly finish off the last of a lipstick.
Amy you should invest in one of those teeny tiny makeup spatulas, it’ll make getting the man up out of bottles when they’re almost out way easier!
3:03 face powder is supposed to be use on a greasy face for his full capacity. Using a mannequin can’t absorb the powder
Thank you for this I get so mad when I have to buy new foundation earlier than I should because my foundation will not come out when it’s towards the bottom
The little plastic stopper that causes the vacuum on the liquid products is there to make sure it doesn’t leak and the wand it’s self gets really mess with out it so it’s there for a reason and you can usually get the out with some pliers once it’s at the end of the
Love this video! One thing I want to note about some lipstick tubes that twist is that some designs will not let you twist them back down once you extend them up (so waste occurs when you try to put the make up away after applying it).
The shimmer eyeshadow probably would be a better choice it tends to be softer then the matte shades.
PLEASE GO THROUGH ALL THE BRANDS!!! I love watching you judge productssssssss
28:23 YESSS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this episode! I would DEFINITELY love to see another episode comparing what companies are being the most honest.
Yo, im so sorry, but I literally couldn't focus on the content. Your hair is literally a magnet for eyes. All I'm tryna say is w hair
My god! This was the most eye opening video from theory so far! Thanks Amy ❤ and sorry for all the frustrating bottles 😂
I don't wear makeup, but I love the math. Looking forward to more insights on how to avoid being scammed by big corporations. 😅
Not me gonna be using this as a guide when I finally throw out my 5 year old expired makeup XD
I purposefully haven't watched the "How dirty is your makeup" Style Theory vid because I'd rather live in denial than throw away the pallets I've had for 9 years that are now discontinued. 😅
I know there's a budget to this. But a larger sample size for each item would make for some more accurate results. Multiple of each individual item
Now I'd like to see the number of uses for each product compared to the price you calculated for the amount of product you actually get.
I know this isn't about hair buuut your hair looks incredible!!!
I'm going to save this for when I get a girlfriend so that way I can get her the best make-up with scientific evidence instead of popularity. Thanks for telling me how much of a sham L'Oreal is, I've seen so many ads for it.
23:45 , fun fact: your only suposed to do 2 clicks to get the product and too many clicks will make it fall of the stick and stick to your lips.
I'm still saying with the theory channels it'd be nice to see Matpat do one theory per year or even a couple here and there. It's up to him completely of course and hey he deserves a break. He's such an integral part of the theory channels. Up to him though.
YESSS do a part two Amy🙏🙏🙏I’m always struggling with getting all my lip product out and constantly rebuying!!
It would have been interesting if they used cosmetic silicone or metal spatulas. This would have made getting most of the product out so much easier to get a true base amount reading. It would have been interesting to see how much the applicator not just the packaging causes product wastage.
Could we get a series of "how to" episodes focused on dressing and styling like character archetypes?
-How to dress like a pirate
-How to dress like an anime protagonist (inspired by Erika Ishii in Smartypants (and other things))
-How to dress like a superhero
-How to dress like a ninja
-How to dress like my D&D characters
-How to dress like a K-Pop Star
Stuff that focuses on capturing the essence of the styles that these things embody even if you're not literally wearing the clothes for them (to invoke Seinfeld, what if you wanna be a pirate but don't want a puffy shirt and just want to wear what you buy off the rack)
There's a Style Theory episode discussing witches modernizing their sense of fashion.
I don’t wear makeup but I’m here to see the deceptive packaging.
I am buying Maybelline concealer with that sponge applicator and I just throw that sponge bit away 😅
As an Ulta employee, the About Face foundation is my absolute FAVORITE! It provides a natural, dewy finish that's buildable if u know hoe to layer it with powder. I like this one more than Fenty!
AAAMMYYYY, i love your wavy hair!!! i wonder if it will get even curlier as you continue to leave the straightener alone? it looks amazing, and thank you for this helpful episode
We been lied to nooooo.
Poor Amy, it must have felt like a chore to empty all of the makeup products. 💄
Miss ma'am, please make part 2
Your efforts weren't wasted and I'm so glad you did this video because it was needed
Style Theory maybe be my favorite out of the 4, i dont really mind my appearance that much but i really like watching (maybe i like the way the information is presented?)
Amy always asks the kind of questions that I have NEVER thought of and then after watching Style Theory I always wonder why I never thought of them. Thank you Style Theory!! ❤❤
Omg , they way you looked so tired by the end! I hope this video goes viral. You deserve it!
When my round pressed powder gets to the point of being a nearly unusable circle around the edge i smash it up with the back of a makeup brush and finish the rest as a loose powder 😅😂
The mortar and pestle method
New tools for the makeup table pliers and a scraper knife
if yall got the budget for it you should do a high-end version and compare them. or a skincare version.
Idk how any of the stuff is lying when it tells you how much product it has. I see your equation, but idk how they can lie about 1.6oz if that's how much product they put it. However, I do think it's interesting to see how feasible it is to actually be able to use all of it. Totally agree with other comments I've seen about the piece in many liquid lip products; it's just too messy and unusable without it so you have to sacrifice space for the product. Pricing is usually adjusted to compensate for this. Would love to see you do another video and see a wider range of brands. The Subtle Makeup stack would be neat to test.
30:08 Mat Pat we respect you 👏 You are awesome 🎉Although we will miss, now that you will be leaving UA-cam 😢 But at least with a lasting impact, that will help many children's dreams & wishes to come true 😌 Truely, Matthew Patrick, MatPat is just So , Honourable, Remarkable & Awesome!😊🎉♥
31:09 Thank you for everything MatPat ♥ And for the one final video for us . We appreciate & honor you ♥💫😊😉🎉
Se Ya on the GTLive 😊😉♥💫🎉
Honestly, may this man be blessed for all eternity ♥💫🌟
7:18 I work in a quality assurance lab (where we test and calculate the density (or specific gravity) for a ton of these kinds of things. We use a pycnometer rather than a graduated cylinder
My heart hurts when I see her hit the containers next to the analytical scale. Rip scale.
Thats why a great tip from makeup artists is to make a beauty blender slightly damp so the liquid foundation doesnt soak in as much (i just use clean fingertips as an application method which also works)
Okay so i use the maybelline eraser concealer BUT i always take out the applicator sponge and use my own sponge so there is not as much product waste , but the pruduct left INSIDE the container.... yikes
I have theory for y'all idk you'll even see it, but can licking a cut help it heal? I know there's white blood cells in spit that can help you heal but would it make your cut heal faster?
There's so much bacteria and viruses in our mouths, i feel like it's more likely you'll get an infection rather than prevent one
I love using the elf lip stain in the square bottle and I will 100000% remove that stopper and get sooo much more product
Yes Amy, please do it by brand. Thank you!
What these companies should look into for containers is the possibility that like CGPgrey says "hexagons are the bestagons."
I love how you are airing out big makeup’s stained laundry. Can we test the stacked makeup? I know that those are normally a round tray that is a combination of powder and puddy. I thought it would be great travel option. So a travel makeup episode. Also I would love to test all the brands to see who’s worth their salt.
Nooooooo, why have the felt tip eyeliners betrayed me! They were my fave, but this is unconscionable! Need a part 2!
My name is Josie look mom I’m in a video 2:29
🤣🤣🤣
Lovely
pen eyeliner is my best friend and worst enemy. I love how easy to apply it is, and now I know I'm not crazy and that thing dries out SO FAST
The little ring is called the stopper in liquid bottles (like lip glosses), those are there to prevent it from leaking everywhere
Never expected Amy to go crazy bc of makeup math and Matt auctioning his stuff
Squeeze tube is the way to go except when it comes to lotion. For some dumb reason they don't use the same science for toothpaste tubes when it comes to lotion
I just started watching this and I have to say this is already the type of videos you should be making! We actually want to know stuff like this when it comes to makeup and stuff! Please keep making educational your videos like this!!! But like someone already said, can you go more in depth? Like multiples of each size and shape so there's more collective data to make a thesis!
As an avid makeup user (and thus buyer) this is a game changing episode and would love a part 2.
Frankly I lose more makeup to it being expired than to the packaging. Even when I was wearing makeup every day I use a pretty light hand with my makeup so it would expire/get clumpy or gross before I would run out.
Also would like the numbers you used/measured and the exact procedure used for measuring. Like I noticed you didn’t close the sides of the balance which produces error, how did you clean the balance between uses, did you calibrate it and how often, etc. As someone who regularly used those types of balances in labs they are a bit finicky.
