The Boston Sax Shop KILLER?? | SYOS reeds review!

  • The new SYOS Arcane reeds just launched a few days ago so I got a box to try! Could they be the next Boston Sax??
One thing I forgot to talk about was how reeds often change after their first introduced to moisture. So a reed that plays great right out of the box might not feel as good the second day due to the exposure to moisture. That's why there's typically a reed break in period. I would have to review each reed over the course of a week or so to document how they changed so I thought I would just keep this video as an "initial impressions" video. Let me know what you think!

When it comes to comparing reeds: it’s different for every person’s set up. Y’all gotta try everything and see what’s best for you. Your setup, horn, and literally your mouth mean that your reeds are going to vibrate differently than other people and you need to take that into account when watching stuff like this. Frank’s content is always fucking fire tho, just thought this might be useful for someone

Yes very true! I try to always talk about that in gear reviews, this is an old video so perhaps I forgot (haven't rewatched this in awhile). But if you check out my most recent gear review (BSS m-series alto mouthpiece) I talk a lot about that!

Rigotti supplies cane for many different manufacturers... Boston Sax, Roberto's Winds, Nexus, Syos, Francois Louis, Woodstone (these are the ones I can remember right now.... I might be wrong about Woodstone, but I believe they use Rigotti cane). Each manufacturer develops a special cut of the reed and Rigotti actually cuts the reed for most of these manufactures (probably all of them). The different ways that reeds are shaped in the vamp and tip (different thickness from the tip to the bark) greatly affects the way a reed sounds. Rigotti cane has been my favorite for a couple of decades. I love all of the different reeds from these different manufacturers for different sounds. I will use a bright sounding Rigotti Gold reed with my warmer sounding neck... I will use a darker sounding Roberto's Winds reed with my brighter sounding neck. The Rigotti Gold reeds can be a little too bright sounding for some mouthpieces in the high notes.. Francois Louis is a great reed for sounding bright, but the high notes don't get too bright on these reeds. Maybe Syos will get a U.S. distributor like you said. All of the other manufacturers I mentioned above have U.S. distributors. I don't mind paying $50 for a box of tenor reeds if the reeds are very consistent. Today I opened up a box of Roberto's Winds alto reeds ($38.50 a box) and 8 of the reeds were perfect and the other 2 were just a little hard. I'm good at adjusting reeds and sometimes the harder reeds turn out to be the best reeds after I adjust them a little. I highly recommend the new Silver Box reeds from Boston Sax Shop. They are similar to the Roberto's Winds reeds but don't have the additional sizes. Luckily the size of the silver box reeds are perfect for me. The alto silver box reeds only cost me $37 a box (for 10 reeds), and Boston Sax Shop now offers free shipping. I love the D'Addario Reserve reeds on soprano sax. They are not as consistent as Rigotti cane, but luckily I can usually use every reed in the box with a little reed adjusting. I love the Reserve reeds on soprano because I love to play with no edge to the sound on soprano. If you like a little edge on your soprano sound, then I recommend the Roberto's Winds soprano reeds.

ALL reeds are made by Rigotti. Not a rumor. Unless you buy reeds made in China. I live in Europe. What reed did you play when SYOS made your Custom Mouthpiece? Good review.

Why would a company that makes plastic/synthetic mouthpieces go for cane reeds is weird to say the least. I came back from the hell of cane reeds and I will not come back unless legere stops making the american cut for tenor. Plug and play, no fuzz, no waste of time, no headaches
