  • Do saxophone necks make a difference? Hopefully by the end of this video you can decide! I've never tried a saxophone neck that didn't come with my horn, so I was super excited to unbox the Boston Sax Shop Heritage neck. Huge thanks to ‪@bostonsaxshop‬ for sending me this gorgeous neck to try out!

    I thought the BSS neck definitely sounded brighter than both necks, but you make all 3 sound so good. I also really love the way it looks on your saxophone!

    The difference between the BSS and the 52ST was fairly small. Definitely there, but much smaller than the difference to the JP neck. I think it does indicate that though a skilled musician can sound great on any horn, a good horn (or neck, or mouthpiece) does sound better and makes a musician's life easier.

      Definitely! Never good to use gear as an excuse, but it absolutely can make your life easier/harder

    I bought the Heritage Tenor unlaquered neck. It may be only a subtle difference to the listener, but to the player, wow! I feel the air rushing through the neck easier and faster. This improves everything for me. Dynamic range, intonation, and altissimo!

    Nice review 💯
    Quick trick for neck cork... Boil hot water. Dip the neck cork in the boiling water for about 5 sec. Pat it dry with a dry towel..The cork will thickin back to org size... (Do not put it in the water for more than 10 sec..u want to protect the adhesive.)

    They all sound very good (good mouthpiece, reed, and player (great playing)) The BSS neck really stuck out as definitely brighter. I think it's really a choice decision and the kind of music you want to play. I prefer a richer sound, but I'm also a Dave Koz fan, and if I were to play any of his pieces, then I would definitely go with the BSS neck. Great vdieo. You should do an overslung and underslung alto sax neck comparison. Thanks for your video!

    I’m sure the heritage neck doesn’t make too big of a difference for modern horns, but you gotta try it on a vintage horn if you get the chance. It’s a pretty awesome experience.

      Yes, and when you get yourself a vintage horn you’ll already have a great BSS neck to match with it. Having said that I think this improves your overall sound and projection hugely on the Eastman sax. I’ve bought the tenor version of the Heritage neck a while ago for my SA80 and it’s a total transformation for the better. Have just ordered one for my SA80 alto and hoping for similar results! Nice video!

    Over my iPhone speakers, and not being able to feel what you feel, JP sounds stuffy, BSS a little brighter and louder, so I assume free blowing, and 52ST sounds like you’re more comfortable. There we run into the real challenge: how to test quality vs familiarity?
    Great video. Hope I get to try a heritage out on my MK VI tenor one day.

    At 6:14, you mentioned the angle is different. According to the BSS website, this is one the most important features of their neck. Opening the angle equals opening up the sound, or words to that effect. As an ambassador, I thought you would already know this?

    • @FoolishFrankie
      @FoolishFrankie  Рік тому +2

      Yes I knew it mentioned that on the website, but physically feeling it is an entirely different thing

    It's hard to tell the difference between the BSS neck and your Eastman neck on my el cheapo 8 watt computer speakers. I could hear a difference when you put on the Jean Paul neck, though. In my most humble opinion, if the difference is only marginal from what came with your sax, the outlay of that kind of money is not justified. Perhaps an upgrade of the mouthpiece would be the first place to start but, even the price of some mouthpieces can run neck and neck with a neck upgrade.

    Listening on high quality headphones, IMHO - Save your money, nobody's gonna notice the difference. Most of the sound difference came from your lower jaw at a new position on your mouthpiece due to the different angle of the BS Shop neck.

    Sans problème je préfère le Eastman 52st 😃😃😃. Avec les deux autres ça ne respire pas, c'est comme si les notes étaient coupées alors qu'avec le Eastman on sent le souffle qui se déroule et résonne, qui roule jusqu'au bout.
