I'm 20 years old, recently sold my entire physical came collection from ps2 up until current gen stuff, that really helped just not seeing games on the shelf, just started the process of deleting all my game accounts. I am about 3 months into quitting games, I started learning Spanish and playing the piano, been going to the gym every day in last month, I could not think of anything I would rather be doing, life is the most amazing deep and complex game of all, give life a chance! I'm sure you will get addicted and spend thousands of hours experiencing the magic of reality. I now look bad in sadness, most of my gaming was not even for enjoyment, but out of a desire to escape from my real world problems.. It can be scary to face life, take it one day at a time, start to reduce your gaming bit by bit, slowly add in new hobby's and I'm sure you will not regret it.

I personally think the key to partying is to learn how to do it without any kind of drugs and actually have fun on it. For example, I somehow enjoy going to the disco fully sober and just go to dance. Of couse, I party way less than back when I drank, but every single time I go partying nowadays feels amazing.

Two years ago I decided I should look for help (due to Dr Peterson advices), and I found out i am bipolar. That was not due to the game, since I was a kid I would manifest manic and sociopathic behaviors.

OK to everyone saying once they gave up gaming their life improved - it's not the gaming that was stopping your growth, it was you procrastinating. Even reading a book as a form of procrastination is bad if it means you're letting more important achievements in life go past.
As for 2:16 - spending 50 hours per week doing ANYTHING will destroy your life. Except sleeping.
Overall, work first then play. And in your play time do whatever makes you happy. And try to have more than one hobby. What I try to do is spend the first 4 days of the week working hard and doing what I need to do in life. Even if it means over a couple of days I get absolutely no down time. Then the last couple days of the week my time off gaming or whatever, feels like a well earned reward.

The most dangerous situation is when you equate games with childhood, like I do, because leaving them feels like leaving the memories, friends, and experiences for an adult life which makes you feel as though the best part of your life is over, and you just have duty and at best 'lesser play' from here on out.

8 out the ten friends I grew up with playing games never stopped playing. They are all living in poverty now, missing teeth, smoke copious amounts of marijuana and cigarettes. The other two went on to become very productive members of society. Personally I have struggled with it over the years, but have gotten a handle on things. As a husband and father we are living the good life. Together we make 4x what the average American makes, and we travel, eat well, pray together, and find joy in accomplishing goals. I think you simply should not stop gaming, just change what you get form it. Play less time and use it as a relaxing activity, try to find some constructive games. For example, don´t play FPS games and play City Skylines: on this example you go from a game which gives nothing to one which develops your creativity and enriches you in something, actually encouraging you to do some research and learning things which apply to real life.
      That is just an example.

I think one of the biggest things you can do is to refrain from gaming for a day and then make that 2 days. The addiction trap with gaming is that it occupies your mind every day of the week. Your conquest will only make progress when you have cleared whole days of the habit. The mindset is that you have to game every day and that you need this daily devotion to survive. By cracking this fallacy you demonstrate to yourself that taking a break from gaming every week for a few days is totally possible and great for your well being.

I started playing league around the end of S4 and the beginning of S5, and that was the best time I had playing this game. I quit because I realized it will never go back to what it was anymore, it's just not the same game I used to love...
I almost got kicked out of university because I couldn't stop playing during my first and second year. My grades, friendship, and social life suffered to the point where I cannot even recognize myself anymore. Moreover, my life was completely filled by playing league everyday for countless hours, and I was too embarrassed to tell anyone about my gaming addictions. I tried to quit by uninstalling the game quite a few times before, but it was only since June of 2020 when I managed to quit completely. On the day that I quit, I was so angry and frustrated that I lost countless ranked games in a row, to the point where I almost raged after I lost a couple of meaningless ARAM games just trying to win for once. I was no longer having fun but rather playing just because couple of friends who introduced me to the game were still playing. What really hit me was the sudden realization that I've put my blood and sweat over all these years, yet I was still hard stuck in Gold and couldn't win a single game that day no matter how hard I tried. I had never lost my mind like that before and I knew that I just couldn't take it anymore, so I deleted the game one last time for good. Since then, I haven't touched the game and I absolutely don't have any desire to play it again.
I regretted wasting six years of precious time, life, and money on this game, and it's something that I can never get back. Looking back at it, I don't miss this game at all. It was simply one of the best decisions I've made as it changed my life completely. I became a much happier person, as I found my purpose and calling in life through my church. In terms of my career, I made the decision to pursue a career in education after I quit. More importantly, just a few months after I quit I met my girlfriend, and we have been dating for over two years now. Honestly, I don't think I would have gotten a girlfriend if I continued playing. Your life will be in a much better state when you stop wasting your money and time on something that's literally a virtual reward and data. Seriously guys life is just too valuable to continue to waste it on something like this... it's never too late to quit and turn your life around.

Thanks for the video and thanks for introducing Gleb. I had played over a thousand hours in CS GO and I was like "wow that's a ton and I'm not even particularly good" and then I talked to other people and I found out people are spending 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 and more THOUSANDS of hours to "get good" at these games. I'm like, "bro, you could become a world expert at something practical with that much time". It made me reflect on how games can really just eat in to your time. I'm glad I woke up after "only" playing 1k hours.

The more poor my friends are, the more they play video games; the more they also do drugs. I think being born behind the 8 ball can be overwhelmingly depressing. Video games can help escape that hell when there feels like there is no escape. I think video games should be fun and engaging but extremely educational, so that they can cope with their hard lives, and potentially learn something that they never been taught.

A lot of what has been said is true. There's so much FOMO in online games. It's been an good time to take a pause or try to cleanse/quit again with everything I wanted done for season 3. Been sober 4.5 days without WoW. Hard because I have irl issues that could spike again, zero control as a sense over the stalking, npd abuse that I've been subjected to over the past 8-9 years. A lot of old friendships also turned out to be with narcissists and fake ones irl that I've not much interest in rekindling. I've seen one of them, reached out to the other, finding those to be hollow, shallow, superficial, vacuous, and with likely non-malignant narcissists.

Those "experts" are incredibly clueless. That is because they make one big, basic mistake, they generalize and they also argue on the absolute wrong question.
Remember that not everyone is the same.
I owe gaming a LOT of my actual real life success right after my mother´s efforts of course. But everything my mother wasn´t able to help me with, I got from gaming: contacts which landed me a job, actually learning English and being the one in the room, any room, who masters. It helped me to develop great management and social skills through strategic thinking, planning and (most important and something that you cannot do in real life without consequences), simulation.
You see, games are to real life what BIM is to construction... you get to simulate something with no worries about death, damage or cost. Consequences are just virtual, for fun and simulation and you get to learn a great deal out of them. Someone smart enough can use this on their very own advantage in real life. There will be many scenarios, not necessary live or death, although that can easily happen too, where you can take on your HUGE actual real experience from certain games and apply it to real life. I have done it in the professional environment many times with great success... So I am certain that many others have done so too.
"When can gaming be a waste of time?" That would be the real question instead of "is gaming a waste of time?" At certain point you might no longer benefit from its priceless experience and it is then when you might need to consider your time investment into it. You don´t have to stop.. you can simply go fancy: for example, get yourselves a great set up, something you could have never afforded when you where younger and a great monitor and then... retire from gaming. No longer will you put 4/10 hours a day like a teenager... you are not getting anything out of that anymore. Instead, play an hour or two a day maybe, but play in luxury. It will still beat burning your brain cells watching some reality show on tv or even the news (another big reality show, really). It now gives you yet another benefit... you can disconnect and relax your mind. So it is in fact not a waste of time anymore, you are simply replacing any other braindead activity with something which actually keeps you mentally engaged, but in a more relaxed fashion.
Then someone else might just stop entirely if, let´s say, you want to open a business, write a book... have some project lying around.. It is only when you are postponing all those wishes and projects to game when it can become a waste of time.

Jordan Peterson has the best answer. As a psychologist too, i agree, video Games are very complex. Various factors need to be considered, like the kind of game u are playing, the Kind of personality u have, how much ur playing and many more. Research on playing video games are controversial. Allthough clear is high volume of playing video games is linked with pathological symptoms like depression and more. Moderate use is therefore key. If someone cant controll the time spending on video games games, then its probably best to avoid them. However if u manage to find a healthy relationship with video games research showed that there can be value in it. For example positive effects on cognition, social interaction and stress relief was found in various studies examining the effects of playing video games on mental health. However u should not play that much (best probably 1 or max. 2 hours per day), because with more time playing, the worse ur mental health will probably get.

Video games are addictive. I do believe that what Mr. Peterson is saying is correct. Video games can be a time warp if you are not careful. Most people gravitate towards games because it's an escape from the reality of the life of that individual. Most of which are not content where they are in life. I was there I know. Lots of time can be wasted playing video games. Before you know it, you look in the mirror and you're a full grown man with grays in your beard. I commend this channel because I believe every man at some point has to grow up and reach their full potential. Other things in life should have the chance to be experienced. Some addictions could be just as bad as drugs. And video games are one of them.

People say that life is short, and it is. So people justify being lazy because there isn't much time for them and we are all going to end up in the same place at the end. Dead. So we spend our lives playing video games, doing drugs and drinking alcohol or only being productive when it is absolutely necessary, it may be fine for some people but for most, it isn't. Many of us will never see our full potential because we just aren't ready to give up comfort. Now you might feel like being lazy but your future self will hate you for it. Time is so valuable because it cannot be bought back and no matter how many times you wish you could go back in time and make changes, it won't happen.
I would say once being a videogame addict myself, I would stop and focus on other things. Of course you can do it in moderation but it can be easily addicting and you might just want to play all day long again.

A lifetime gamer here (+-35years of gaming) who decided to hang up gaming for a few years and decided to learn how to play the guitar. After 6-7 years of not playing games I've recently came back. Not worth it. Real life is overrated. Especially when you are a hardcore introvert. Really not much to do... Couldn't be happier when I have started gaming a few days ago/maybe a week or so.
Now the problem is... I am torn in-between games and the guitar... I love music but playing the guitar (learning was a straightforward torture. Both physical and mental). I have... oh for just the sake of it, say wasted, thousands of hours, sh1tload of money and time. WASTED is a wrong word here but people often use it with the idea of gaming. They WASTE so much time playing games. Well it transfers to everything else as well. Do I regret it? Not really... Would I do it again? HELL fcking no/ Not sure if I will ever stop my guitar torture as I love music and still have so many songs I would love to play but... It's just different. More of a lateral move for me as it wasn't/isn't a career path. I would rather sing but... well the idea of learning the guitar was less intimidating and easier to get into I guess. There were and probably still will be some beautiful moments for me and the guitar. There are times when I play and cry at the same time because it's so beautiful. I would have never imagined I would be playing one of my favourite songs one day.
So how it compares to gaming? Not much. You fcking grind every single day to learn, practice, hone your skills. With fraction of a reward to what you get in gaming. If you want to make a career out of it... well it might be easier, etc., as you have some vivid goal where you want to be. As a hobby/entertainment? If you ever played MAPLE STORY during its prime the grind is at least a few times harder with so much more frustration and so much less reward. A really bad game in real life lol.
As with everything in life... BALANCE is the key... If you are good with it. Get your life straight and spend what's left for gaming if there's nothing else really that you enjoy doing. I do not think they are bad. They are very time consuming though... So is the guitar but it is so much easier to stop playing the guitar as it is not as much fun. Just as healthy food, reading books, etc/
This is why there's 0 rubbish in my diet... It's just easier for me to ban it completely than fight with the changes so much; bouncing from healthy to unhealthy eating habits all the time. I might delete steam again soon as I fight with those thoughts that I am wasting my life but... To be honest... I've been out there... in real life. I've done new things, etc. They are not really that great. No even better than good games and the experience you get from them.
When I flew in a helicopter for the first time (it will be in one of my vlogs) it wasn't anything more thrilling than a good flight simulation I have experienced in games. I mean it was real more intense and much better but... It felt more of like a better game and that's it. Hard to explain. Hopefully I will work this internal conflict out and find terms with my lifestyle but... I was and still am kind of disappointed with real life. Of course I could try and be someone I am not. But for me personally... the real life was just okay. Nothing to write a review about I guess. It's much more dangerous, expensive, restricted, limited, boring, exhausting and I don't know what else.
Ideally I want to continue playing the guitar as it is fix for my I WANT TO DO SOMETHING AMBITIOUS WITH MY LIFE (and of course because I love music and want to be a part of it) and I WANT GAMES IN MY LIFE as they are my safe place, a place where I can relax most of the time (unless they piss me off xD), have a lot of fun, and exercise my mind in a pleasant and safe way.
I have done some urban exploration (abandoned compounds) and I have been in some really dodgy places. Great adventures but I had just as amazing if not better in games. Yes, they were not real and real life is better but at least you don't have to worry about being shot, stepping on a 8cm rusty nail, fall to your death through a whole, etc. Kind of extreme example but just to give you some perspective I guess.
Sure, I recommend you to try and explore the real life and find out the truth for you yourself. Maybe you will find it much better than gaming. That would be amazing too.
For me personally... I would love to have time for both. Real life and my lovely games. But if I see that they are taking over my life I will delete them again and be miserable again I guess. For some reason... I never pick the easy way in life... No idea why... I guess I like the challenge... but I don't lol. The ambitious and creative part of me just not letting me game in peace I guess...
I will probably cover this and more in my vlogs./ Which I love. That's basically my real life. Funnily enough, they bring me even more joy than gaming... Imagine that... but being rather hardcore introvert. I do them once a month/a few weeks/a few months. Depends on the weather mostly and my mood. wtf.... fcking wall of text... = I've not vlogged for a while and it's coming out of me I guess... lmao/
One more thing. It's best to treat games like junk food. They're definitely not that bad but... they are just super amazing... and really hard to top with anything else in life. The only price you pay is... that you could be doing something else. But again... I have been playing the guitar a few hours a day hating it most of the time and for what? Why? So I could butcher some of the cool songs out there? I don't feel like I will ever be able to write something of my own. Not on the guitar at least. Maybe it was just a part of a path I had to walk through.
Go out check the real life by all means. But if you find what I have found... Hopefully you will be able to play games guilt free and enjoy the rest of your life like that. Just exercise a little and eat healthily so you can play more :)

Own a game studio and I'm very concerned with how much time a player would spend on a game I design. I was in the Army, went to war, have many, many hobbies, a family and I can say, a game will never be as fulfilling as any of those could be...could be. I say could be because anything you invest your time in is potentially a waste of time if you stop progressing through it and suddenly realize, you want to seek self-improvement doing something else. I think as long as someone is spending their time looking for purpose in life, then it's not a waste of time and if that so happens to be a game, or a book, or drawing, or exercise then so be it. You could quit gaming to do something else and discovery later on that thing was also a waste of time. Time must be lost to dissatisfaction in order to truly be a waste of time; to be able to claim one has never wasted their time is to say they have no regrets in how they found purpose in life and most purpose is achieved through failure. One of my favorite sayings is, "different is not always better, but better is always different." If you realize that improvement is merely another word for different, then suddenly it's not a great leap to realize that improvement is not necessarily always better...it's simply different and that is what you could be doing with your time, something that is simply different that has no relevance to being better.

People can't and shouldn't feel like they need to be working and productive 24/7 all the time either. Becoming a workaholic is also not healthy. Balance really is key.

    • @streiya
      @streiya Місяць тому

@ZombieLincoln666 Well, there are e-learning and serious games that can be utilized as teaching tools. Then there are those who do it as their jobs like online streamers or game testers, etc, but they are actually getting paid for it. Those would be instances of non-recreactional use.
In most other instances, the average person should only play video games in such a way that it's for your free time only, and it doesn't start to overlap into not allowing you to become a productive person. Basically, don't allow yourself to become an obsessed, lazy couch potato who does nothing else in their life.

As long as you're self sufficient, taking care of your health, and have a good job, there's nothing wrong with enjoying video games. The flip side of playing too much video games is committing yourself to the never-ending grind for approval or self-improvement, both are a recipe for unhappiness.

I have been thinking about this a lot. What did our ancestors do after gathering berries and after hunting? They would gather around a campfire, eat, tell stories, play with eachother, dance and then go to bed. How often are we together with others nowadays? For most of us that's not every night. That's because we have so many more things to do then just gather food all day. Gaming and other hobbies fill a gap that's left in our individualistic world. People are social animals, so probably the way our ancestors lived is superior for most of us, but not realistic in the modern world. So we need other things to fill in the gaps. And that's fine as long as it doesn't take away from other important things in live. The Chinese gouvernment limits gaming for kids to a maximum of three hours a week. I think that is a realistic amount of hours to be able to live a healthy and balanced life. It could have been 4 or 2 hours a week, but gaming much more is probably going to compromise other parts of your life to much. Just my thoughts.

I agree, most video games are a waste of time, but what about RPGs? I see them comparable to reading long books or movies. I left video gaming for around 20 years and recently started playing again, mainly my old ps1 & ps2 games I had such as final fantasy 7 & 10. It is true, I started to gain weight, loose social skills, stopped going out, and after work I just want to turn on my ps2. I only started playing after a long relationship ended, which had absorbed most of my life and destroyed most of my friendships... Incredibly I find it much more satisfying than all my last relationships & friendships. I think the only solution is to find a balance, to avoid meaningless- addictive games that involve other players or score keeping and play only on the weekends and only after going to the gym on weekdays.... nearly impossible.

Maybe I am a strange type of gamer. I love video games but I was never a fan of online multi-player. I want to be engaged in a video game, like I am engaged in a good movie or a good book. I want interesting worlds, fascinating stories and characters and also maybe a thing or two to learn from it. I think game are a great medium for this. But I think the majority of people who become addicted are seeking dopamine hits by setting new high scores and don't care about the storytelling of the campaign all too much.

I see absolutely no reason to quit video games when they are fun and even increase intelligence. Now they can be addictive and I can see why a person would need to moderate how much they play, but that's it, but there are many good things we enjoy in life that we can spend too much time doing and need to moderate. This idea that people play video games and achieve nothing in real life is objectively and factually a big fat lie. There are gamers who might do nothing else and not really do anything, but the same could be said for any activity. I'm sure there are people who play sports and achieve nothing in life; has nothing to do with sports.

I don't think games are inherently bad. It's bad to abuse them, and it's bad if you don't have self control. So work on your self control. If you have a gaming addiction and can't stop yourself from playing, then by all means find ways to stop it as it's causing you harm right now. But games have their place, just like any kind of entertainment and are not bad outside of an addictive personality or underdeveloped brain. Also, be mindful of echo chambers. Chances are if you're here for a gaming addiction, so are most other people, but that doesn't mean there aren't people who enjoy playing games and have no problems whatsoever. I would even argue that the social media websites that Jordan Peterson frequents are way worse than gaming, which might explain how polarized he is. I quit Facebook a few years ago and never looked back. Twitter I have never used fortunately.

As a gamer, I respectfully disagree. I have a gaming channel & I earn from gaming. it isn't bad by any means. I also take long breaks from gaming if i ever feel i am overdoing it. For example, i am on a 3 weeks break from gaming while i am writing this comment. I will resume soon enough & it never really affects my work or social/personal life at all.
The problem is people who overdo it, not the games themselves.

Moderation. I game and I love it, I always have and I always will. However I am MUCH better than I was before. I game in moderation and I make sure I look after my body before I do it. I game yes but I also run, I eat healthy I meditate, work full time, walk alot, work out and I just generally get outside. I even like the idea now that I have vr that when I'm playing I can actually move around making the whole gaming experience less sedentary.
Sure though, don't spend the majority of the day doing it. A lil bit is fine, alot is bad. Like anything. No one is saying broccoli is bad for you right but if that's all you eat you're gonna get ill pretty quick.

That Dr.Warren dude sounds like he's only familiar with phone games, for which i would agree wholeheartedly with him that they are designed to make you addicted to that dopamine hit.
"Real" video games, on the other hand, are an entirely different story, and especially social/competitive games where you play against and with other players, are just as healthy as playing sports, or chess with and against other people, because you are learning to work with other people, as well as how to anticipate what other people will do in various situations.
Anyone who claims that video games are a waste of time should therefore simply stop doing anything other than working, sleeping, or eating, since literally anything else is a waste of time. Thank you for coming to my TED-talk.

_(A Note To The Readers : The contents of this comment are in any sense not meant to be perceived as assertions predicated upon subtle criticism of this channel. They're purely suggestive in their connotations)_
After going through this channel I've come to the conclusion that's its sole directive is to glorify and propagate convictions that support the denunciation of gaming as a comprehensively afflictious activity. In the course of accomplishing it, it fails to outline the merits of the same, which are but many. Thus, I have gone through the pain of writing this comment, for addressing what it doesn't.
Gaming per se like any other activity is quasineutral in terms of its consequences. The motive of its performer destroys that particular attribute of it. You can leverage gaming for inspiring people with your creativity, you can take care of your financial insufficiencies with the aid of gaming, or you can devolve yourself in all domains of your life by participating in it.
In conclusion, gaming ought to be viewed as a double edged sword.
    Thank you for your patience.

You are absolutely wrong About video games!!
I am a 40 year old man work 8 hrs. a day and love playing my ps5.
Not many people when your old with disabilities have the time or energy to do anything physical...especially when you get out of work and its physically tires you out at the end of the day.
Not to mention what's the difference between watching T.V or movies for 4-6 hrs. when they get home ....which a lot of other people do and that's considered normal ...then playing video games 4-6 hrs. when you get home after a long hard days of work??
I honestly don't see the difference.
I'd rather play a video game then watch a movie because not only does it feel like your watching something but doing something.
Also many professors say when your playing video games as opposed to anything else ...your attention span and problem solving skills increase ....not to mention reaction time which is a good thing.

"Pursue what is meaningful"...Yeah well I game for the same reasons that I listen to music or watch movies at the theater. To get away from the stress of life and have fun, and I think that's meaningful. As we age we won't be able to engage in or enjoy more physical fun like sports outdoors, and so gaming is an easier option and it keeps the mind active and sharp. Is not that why senior/elderly people be hitting the slot machines? To have easy fun gaming aside from winning money?...
