I go out for walks everyday here in China where I live, course through different and new streets, meet new shopkeepers, eat at different restaurants, discover new parks, trees, sunsets, whereas a few months back I was gaming, wasting my life like a zombie living in a 2-D flat screen world. I think of myself now and then and I find my past self unrecognizable. Guess my motherboard dying was the best thing that happened to me.

I’ve given up gaming recently as I realized that gaming was a means of numbing and blurring how I truly felt about life. In that moment my real life problems didn’t have and effect on me. All that mattered was what’s happening in that game... I did that back and forth thing for years. It’s been 2 months since I’ve given up gaming (I’ve gone much longer before...but I always planned to go back into it I don’t plan on going back) . I’ve been depressed recently as I’ve taken away a source that blocked me from truly feeling a lot of needed emotions.
This was the best choice I ever made, I’m now trying to find myself for who I am and working to my goals.
I want to read more and work on my writing career and academic career.

Worth noting some people never get into gaming in the first place. My relative touched their first PC at age 30 and always told me "what's the point?". They tried games, nothing appealed to them. They preferred reading, cooking and the outdoors a lot more.

Anything in excess is not good. Period.
It applies to everything in life not just video games.
    I run a company.
I play some games. But in moderation.
I watch anime, movies and shows in moderation.
    I read books 30 minutes a day.
    I meditate 10-15 minutes a day.
    I workout 1 hour a day.
I eat one pizza once in 3-4 months.
I don't use any devices in the first hour and the last hour of the day.
I take break from digital devices once a month.
    I travel and have fun.

I found this interesting as I subbed to Andrew a few months ago, he's definately a "newbie" in the self help sector, and a lot of his content is recycled stuff I've read or seen a million times. He is using video editting techniques and royalty clips to change scenes to grab attention and make his videos more entertaining, which is why they get more views then just a talking head. Advice to all people into self development, pick a life purpose and just do it, don't get trapped in the self development trap it's a huge way of further procrastination. Everything in life is BS, because no matter what you do in it, you will die in a short amount of time and then it's a complete reset. The only objective in life is to be highly conscious, be so conscious that you enjoy every step of the journey before you hit the last step. Unfortunately most video games make you unconscious, and oblivious to everything else whilst you invest 100% of your time into some shitty limited 3D virtual world that you will eventually stop playing.

    • @GameQuitters
      @GameQuitters  3 роки тому +25

I agree that spending too much time on personal development content can be detrimental and not lead to actual improvement. There's a fine balance between learning new things and applying them to your life... and just continuing to watch more and more content without taking action. Personally I have taken a big step back from personal development content (books, videos, etc) over the last 2 years, after spending a decade engrossed in it. Something everyone has to determine for themselves.

After my friend left for the army I lost the motivation because he was the only one I worked out with and worked with at work on the same days. I started again gaming after I quit for 2 years, I am 37 yrs old so not that young like most of the gamers. I quit gaming because at my age it causes me headaches and tremors. The problem is that I am good at FPS still have good time reaction and a good k/d ratio in games like Rainbow or Apex. Although since I played again after almost 2 years, I forgot about my life problems, whilst I worsened my mental conditions; sleep deprivation, headache every morning like you wake up from a night of heavy drinking, and also huge tremors in bed with legs shaking and palpitations. I've been playing on weekends for 12 hours per day and I couldn't stop and I lost the cognition of time. So I am selling again everything, but this time I am done, my mind at my age is not able to play competitive games anymore, I am not young and I felt too much stress and pain. There is a huge difference between Game Campaign and Multiplayer, when In my 20's at the beginning of the 2000's we used to play games but once you finished one, you went hanging out with friends. Multiplayer games instead are pure dope, is like drugs or alcohol once you try and you win either you're good you can't stop it. Please make a difference Multiplayers Gaming and Solo Play Gaming are not the same are totally different, I have never got addicted to Solo Play games, but this is the very gaming.

I hear what he's saying about the outputs and inputs, but these are relative to the specific person your dealing with. It's like when you hear people say something like "don't give that homeless guy money, he'll just go spend it on alcohol," but if you were that homeless guy, you'd also go spend the money on alcohol, because what else are you going to spend it on?
People need stress-coping mechanisms. It's very easy for a guy who has lots of money, a beautiful woman and friends to spend time with to say that games aren't worth the time, because that guy has a whole lot of other pleasurable things he could be spending his time on. Some people don't live very nice lives. A lot of people in fact.
Playing games may not have been worth it for Andrew, but here's the thing - everyone is not Andrew Kirby. Everyone does not have the life circumstances of Andrew Kirby. For someone else, the outputs of spending between 1-4 hours a day playing games may absolutely be worth it. No one's forcing you as a gamer to spend all your time playing games. And even if a specific person did quit gaming and invest more time into work, whose to say that person's life would actually improve? It might stay the same minus the games. And then that person might just be totally stressed out and miserable because now he's got little to no joy in life whatsoever.
There's no inherent meaning to life. Who gets to decide whether a life where a lot of time was spent playing games was a wasted or bad life? Who gave that person the authority?
    Criticism welcome.

Games like league have brought nothing but addictivness and problems to me that I am trying to leave, but games like hollow knight Celeste and more are beautiful works of art that don’t aim to keep you hooked and instead strive to be the best piece of art they can be. Tldr I like this channels tips but I feel like it’s a bit too extreme and should be focused on helping games be put back on the right track as fun artistic expressions that are pauseable and not addictive (I’m looking at you every online multiplayer game ever)

Thanks for the video. Im up to the part where i have worn holes into my keys on each game i have played. I have clocked 1500 hours on Apex Legends recently after all the Battlefield series.
I did once give up for 1.5 years but some buddys talked me back into it so now i have given up again. 6 days into no gaming, this time i have my son doing the same thing. I am doing it for both of us now. He was falling into the trap just like me and I can't let that happen. This is serious. I am still watching too much youtube and streamers so I need to break that. @@acid2213 well, I will say that shitty talk about "maybe it did but you don't realise". Urgh, I hate that. Anyway. This works with lot of things. For example, we will never know how bad or good your life would be without gaming, or without your mother, or without being born where you were born etc etc. But we still can talk about the good and bad effects games, mothers and places to born have. And for some things there are more good effects than bad ones. Games are like that. Gamers are at least more logical, they have to be, because they deal with logical relations all the time. Anyway.
You have to be determined. If you are getting addicted to everything you touch, there is something about your psychology that you have to deal, that makes you try to compensate through addiction. Overcome that, my friend. It is possible. In the last years I experimented alcohol, weed and cocaine. Didn't get addicted to those, didn't even need to put effort to do that.
