I have mother suffering from cancer, and I never went to hospital to see her. Fortunately she recovered for now, but she left me alone. She had enough of my gaming. I broke 2 fingers while playing 24/7. I just fainted from exhaustion. I still cannot move on, I have to go to rehab in February, as a severe addict.

It just sucked so much of my time away. Ive been off games now for nearly a year, and finally used the time to job hunt and begin my new career as a web developer (which itself took 9 years for me to achieve). I definitely could have achieved my new career earlier if I didn't game as much.

This video helps to reinforce what I feel about gaming in my life. I still enjoy games, but recently I feel that I'm outgrowing them at the age of 26. As nice as gaming is, it drags too much on my time, money, and relationships that the negatives are too significant to ignore. It has also impeded my progress in my other hobbies too. I want to do so much more in my life, so thank you for keeping me on the path, Cam!

I can definitely attest to this. Gaming can definitely promote inflexibility. It can feel highly rewarding as it taps into multiple human drives, such as accomplishment, competition, exploration, success etc.

Yes, my games were so important because I had live players on there who were depending on me everyday to suit up and show up, so it gave me a sense of identity, purpose, all that. When one of my (Vikings game)Chief's grandkids died in a car accident I literally cried every day for weeks. When another one of my Chiefs (@ GOG) left the clan with no notice and no reason.... I suddenly realized these are one sided relationships. I think I spent $3,000 just in the first 3 months of playing Vikings, causing huge fights with my S.O over this. I had to go cold turkey to get away and I still think about it. I miss it, but priority wise, it had taken over my life.

I did give up on gaming March 2021. It did take more and more of my time and I didn’t feel motivated to do anything else besides it. Everyday I had the feeling to play. Also looking back at the time I spend gaming I just realized “I had a lot of fun but what did I achieve? I could have reached all my current goals in that time and even more.” So I sold my gaming pc. Since then I’ve been getting so much done and working towards my actual goals. I don’t really miss it.

This is a great video, thank you ❤️ As someone who grew up young in a very abusive household, with lots of trauma dumped at an age where I couldn’t really fend for myself… I remember turning to Gaming as a form of Escapism and it eventually completely became addictive and consuming. I remember in my early-mid teen years spending 10-11 hours a day at times locked away from my problems in a room gaming away.
I still haven’t fully gotten over this coming into my early adulthood, but I have managed to decrease it to 2.5 hours a day over lots of self-control so far. I’ve noticed the positive changes of having more Time for those close to me, and appreciating the Real Life I’ve been given instead of a Virtual One. We appreciate your work man in making these videos to spread valuable information to others!

I'm glad to have someone like you talk about the disadvantages of video games
Lots of people are covering this up
Indeed, a person does not discover the disadvantages of video games until after a period of time has passed
The problem is, as you said, at the continuous playing, & the inability to stop...
And everything you said is true
And thank you again for the video you made 👍👍

The vast majority of youtubers have nothing bad to say about videogames, I can not speak for offline cases since that would need research.
How is the not playing videogames process going for you?

      Hello ,
Yes, of course, not everyone will complain about video games
Because the effect is discovered after a while
You are a human being and you have limited energy and limited days to live
You have a choice how to use it
And you will bear the consequences in the end
Video games are just one of the many options for how you spend your time
Like I choose to spend my time in sports
      Or learning to cook
And after a while of my time with them
      Get the result
      Better and more active body
      As for cooking new dishes
      Did I like the result?
      for me yes
And the same question if I choose to spend my time in video games... after a while
What did it add to me?
What positive changes are added ?
      For me
      There is none
      It only got worse
In profession, health and social life
      My greetings

This is, more importantly, why you should never play multiplayer games or games that release incomplete (AKA those that use MTX or DLC or early access/roadmap garbage) more than anything.
They're intentionally abusing you. Stick to singleplayer games that are complete at launch if you're going to play anything. Do not let the companies into your head like that.
Though local multi isn't quite as bad because at least you won't consistently have access to the rest of the world of people playing. Local multi inherently puts limitations on how much you can play and your expectations of how much you can play as such.

I also prioritized gaming over my newborn daughter, getting annoyed at her for ripping me away from my games. And I carried her in my body! It's not just fathers that face this. She's 10 months old now and so much time has just flown by... Time I will never get back. Luckily I did most of my gaming when she was sleeping, but still. 86 days ago I quit so I could spend more time on my daughter and more time making art. I also don't use social media anymore and try to only use apps that enhance my real life rather than distract me from it. My visiting UA-cam today is now a rare occurrence, I no longer waste hours bingeing mindless content. Despite all the sunk cost fallacy crap in my brain, the tradeoff has been SO worth it. My daughter is my best friend and the light of my life! I make so much more art, art that reinforces precious memories of these fleeting days! It is so worth it. Do it for you.

    Hey,
I want to share my story. I have been gaming since i was about 10 years old or so and it got out of hand quickly. While luckily i was able to take care of my grades and finish my a level, i just wasted so much time. I have been dealing with shortcomings resulting from less social experience and have been pretty aimless all around.
When i got out of school though i quickly realised there was more important stuff to do.
About 2 years ago i already tried stopping to game but it didnt work. Now that i have responsebilitys, live is my new game. I am now working towards a goal. I do sometimes game, but it feels natural to only do it in moderation, since i have to do so much else.
If u want to improve your life, just do it. Dont focus on the gaming focus on the goal. That was the biggest mistake i made when i first tried quitting.
Its also a kind of energetic rule, the more u focus on something the more it comes to live. Focus on solutions not problems.
I wish you all the best from Germany.

All cared about was my Playstation. And I have a lot of regret about it, definitely wasted time. 😔

Welp, I better not act like this video isn't a god-send .. I gotta quit gaming. I sell my console, get another one, trade that one in for the best one, trade that one in, waste so much freaking time. The man who spoke about how much time he wasted and the regret he had to live with after losing his mom was such a punch to my stomach. I get more pleasure from being with people. It is more fulfilling. But the dopamine that video games give me has been like no other all of my life.

I tried playing a video game by downloading it for 30 minutes 2 months after the 90 days and for one thing I noticed is that Video games suck you into the world. Like you said in that video it you can see everything but all your mind wants to do is beat the video game and on top of that it gives so much dopamine and "fake happiness" like an Amphetamine. Just because of that, I deleted that game 10 minutes earlier than I planned. Gaming is one of those industries where it only benefits you when you create the game not play it as its the only market where you can sell a half released game for full price and then never fix the bugs and issues or take very long to fix them due to the addictive nature of their customers.

So here is my addition, which can be seen as a addition to 11: low motivation or the 13th way gaming harms your life.
Too little boredom due to overstimulation:
Temporary overstimulation is not unique of this form of media but it is very common since videogames stimulate multiple senses near constanly while playing mainly: Hearing and sight
Why is boredom good? periods of Boredom before bedtime can help you take more time to think of tasks you still need to do instead of a thoughtstream about it happening only while you are in the process of trying to sleep delaying the process.
Secondly for anywhan who tries to be creative, it can help you be more aware of your local inverioment of thinking of what it is lacking, giving a starting trigger to work on your favorite creative skill.
    A example:
was about 2 months ago, where I get a sort of urge to either go play videogames or watch videos on YT, at that moment I sayed "No, shut down your PC and Phone and grab a pencil and paper and go lay on your bed"
While laying on bed I had questions like "IF money was not a problem what would my ideal house look like?" and "If landlord restrictions where not so strict what would you change about the aparment with a approx budget of about $2000?
This resulted in my making 10 mini sketches over 2 days, the most fun I had that week.

I know that will not play games anymore, but I would like to not even want this anymore. I can't see any new games and consoles anymore because I think I will just give up and start playing again

I've played all the Big TItles - WoW for 5-6 years in and after high school, then LoL in university for 5-6 years again. They were fun, but I got lost interest in games in general. Only game I like is Valorant, where I can go 1-2 fast rounds, instead of constant grinding in MMORPG-s, or something.
To be honest I got bored with games, and there was 1 years I didnt even play anything. But nothing changed sadly. So I returned to games. Ive never had success in social life, and making connections, so it's like I play, because I cant fit in communities. Having no friends is not because I game all the time, it's the other way around.
I try to break out of this circle, but no success so far... :D
Im also learning to code and guitar - Im programmer as a job too - but they are also much more fun with community. I didnt pick up my guitar last years (maybe 3-4 times), because I try to learn everything about web development after work. But I realised if I dont use a skill/technology it's almost a waste of time to spend all those money and time on tutorials, because I wont use them in my work.
So the more I try to learn on evenings, the less they are beneficial in every day, when I work in totally different technology.
It had one effect tho: I spend time only on learning, and I burnt out fast.
This year I want to find my balance and peace, even if Im not developing at my workplace (which is bad I think), it's not worth giving all my time trying to learn everything. You could say that I should change job, but I dont have the skills, web development requires insane skills for interviews. So it's a vicious cycle, I dont really know what to do :D

Cam, I've been indulged into your videos lately, thinking that I was heavily addicted to games, but it seems that I am only partially addicted. I find your videos very interesting, and they've been helping me get my life back together again, slowly, but surely. One question I ask when I analyze everything is, WHY!, Why do games exist if its only to disrupt one's life? It has done more harm than good, and it shouldn't be so attractive when one's life feels like its going in the gutter. I hate the thought of using gaming as an escape but life situations sometimes make it difficult for one to find another passion outside of one's own home, as much as one wants to get out.

We’re quite similar Omar. I’m 40 years old and have been gaming for the last 30 years. I feel like I’ve wasted years on something that doesn’t really give you anything back like learning a new language or sport. All it’s done is hold me back. Need to make that first move and delete your accounts and sell those consoles off. It’s the only way.

I'm not a gamer, I used to be when I was in my teens but played games on and off for 10/15 years since usually got bored after an hour or so gaming. But had some time off work spent 2 solid days about 30 hours over 2 and a half days playing red dead redemption 2 to complete it. Had a huge anxiety attack that felt like a heart attack a day or 2 after wtf. Gaming isn't good for me. Short periods an hour or 2 here and there.

there is no gaming in moderation in my experience. as an recent quitter I can't phathom playing just one hour a day or so, first of all you could never complete the average game in a timely fashion so gaming in moderation is essentially pointless you either have to play more than that or not at all.

15k hours an adicction? XD Aamateurs, thats what i got in 1 game. I call bullshit. What you are describing is a depresion, apathy, lack of will, low self care, mood swings, poor relationships, but the method of coping is gaming, thats it. Yes gaming gives you doses of what makes you feel good, and ofc is far easier than, achieving independence or some other, delusional socialy imposed "goal" like having childrens a house yara yara, socioeconomical satisfaction boomer shit, also gaming its cheaper and healthier than simply doing drugs to get your dopamine. Ive got out of a depression and kept gaming and boy i spent the same amount of hours playing, but now im not depressed so the lack of will, low self care, poor relationship is gone. (not completely ofc but im working on it)
Dont quit gaming, go see a therapist. Seek profesional help

I just shared my view on this very subject to a thread of (obvious) gamers, wow was that a mistake. Usually adicts defend their standpoint with bias ignorance and opinions ... and that's exactly what happened.
