Just listening to Neville leaves me in doubt as to why we've not won anything in 60 years. 'He'll have to upset a few lads' - he's the bloody manager!!
This is the problem! Ian Wright was the same on ITV. We need to get over this idea that there are certain players who are automatic picks because of their club form. Neville knows it doesn't work - he even mentions Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham. So stop talking about anyone being too good to leave out and focus on the best system. It's the only way!
@mikepotter2561 Howson made a very good point yesterday. Camavinga has had one of the best seasons at Madrid But you don't see him starting for France because he doesn't directly fit the system. If this was Southgate he would be trying shoehorn him in somewhere just because of how well his season went at the club
what he's saying is exactly why we wont ever win a tournament. too bothered about keeping names in. Didnt an "inexperienced" Pele win Brazil the world cup? or an "inexperienced" Maradona light up tournaments? the list goes on but because its England oh no we cant play inexperienced players.
@@rubenTR309 Ironically Camavinga probably could come in and play anywhere, but I take the point! Imagine if we were talking about the Portugal squad - you've got to find a way to get João Felix in there, no way you can leave Diogo Jota out, Palhinha simply has to play, Ruben Neves is too good to warm the bench!
Balance of the team, not right. Really? Well, if you have a starting line-up with: - 3 right backs, 2 out of position, - no left back - no left-sided player on the pitch - one left back in the squad who is unfit and hasn’t played since February - 3 no.10s with Bellingham, Foden and Kane (dropping too deep and effectively playing as a no.10) - no player on the pitch with blistering pace on the left (in particular) to run into space behind the defence (eg no Stirling, Rashford or a Gordon, who’s actually in the squad!) Any wonder that the balance of the team isn’t right? It’s a mess all of Southgate’s making.
@@ronnyron4681 Not quite. You’ve also got to deal with Trent in midfield. Would drop him, and start Mainoo. Wouldn’t play Bellingham as false 9. You have three forwards in the squad. If Kane isn’t quite fit and firing (and he isn’t) then play one of the other forwards.
Shaw has not been fit since February - not only should he not play on Tuesday he should not be in the squad. Its not fair on him or his club. Just one example of why Southgate should not be and never should have been England manager.
Why are they not trying Adam Wharton? He is calm on the ball, terrific tackler and can keep possession and allow Rice to push forward. He will make a huge difference! Please play him Gareth!
Get rid of rice not play alongside, he is the biggest problem for England. Can't pass forward, can't dribble pass player, can't turn, can't shoot, only doing that short side pass and back pass. Rubbish.
sorry gary but you're just clueless... yesterday's showing was all on southgate, the players don't just turn up and perform terribly for no reason like that, we've seen them perform at an elite level this season the problem is southgate and his complete misprofiling of players... if you're so deadset on playing trent (experimented for over a year apparently), then you should know that trent's best asset is his range passing over the top/around defensive structures, with that you MUST have runners/outlets to get the best out of him and yet we have gordon rotting on the bench and rashford on holiday... anyone who understands football can see it's southgate at fault here, not the players
I was thinking the same. Get Gordon and Watkins for more direct threat. Let them stretch the defense then that would allow some space for Bellingham to dictate midfield. I think instead of playing players out of position should make them compete for same position. i.e. Foden should start next or early sub if Bellingham drops off. Do that for every position everyone would have to play better
sounds so simple 😂 unfortunately we are the nation that put scholes on the wing and lampard as a holding midfielder so they could get them in with gerrard 😂
@@alansouthall8221 yeah we got ourselves into a pickle by having another Lampard/gerrard dilemma but this time it’s Bellingham/foden, notice other nations don’t have this issue.
If we expect players to be flexible, i.e. playing out of position, then why can't a manager be flexible with his formation and selection? If 4231 does not suit England then 4213 or like Ancelotti did at Milan let players figure out the formation, but I guess it's too late for that now
@@LT212-24Germany kinda does. Wirtz isn't as good or versatile as Musiala so he's struggling atm. Doesn't matter though because the rest of the midfield is 10/10 kroos and gundogan
I agree with you you can have the best players in world in your team but it doesn't matter because if the team can't gel together you can't win anything
he's not gonna solve any of the issues though 🤣 this team desperately lacks runners/outlets for our creative players to feed, the last thing we need is another creator in the middle
@@benfuller2890 Agreed. If Southgate wants the main attacking play coming through the middle by the likes of Foden and Bellingham then he needs to drop Kane for Watkins because he doesn't make runs. If his priority is playing Kane then he desperately needs Gordon on the pitch and the team focusing more on wing play
It’s just amazing how Gary cannot see why we have regressed. We have been awful against Brazil, Belgium, Bosnia, Iceland…. And the many many teams we played before them. We have never looked ‘positive’ in matches since that first half vs Spain in the nationals league back in 2019. Southgate initially went with a progressive approach when he took the job because he knew it was a quick win with the fans and players and then after the World Cup 2018 he reverted to this negative, stale outdated approach that the players could only get on board with because they probably agreed with the work hard, physical identity of the team (e.g., maguire, Phillips, rice, shaw, walker sterling ect) but in the last two years we have brought through much better technical players and no longer have much physicality or need to rely on this in the team to win games, yet he can’t adapt the identity to befit the creative, fluid players we have now. And simply the players are not willing to play that style anymore, this is why they are not committing to the press and we looks so void of ideas. He’s lost the dressing room and for good reason, there is no reason that with a team like that, you should be so worried about our defence and try to prioritise ‘physical’ players like Gallagher over creative talent like mainoo or Wharton. It’s honestly terrible management. We have put in the two worst performances of the tournament!!
Honestly that's what I'm thinking. I'm a scotland fan and I feel we played better against Germany than England did against Serbia, that's how bad England's football is under southgate. This England side should not be lucking it's way through the group stages
it's very quintessential british... bringing on "energy" i.e. gallagher instead of someone who can keep it ticking and bring us up the field i.e. mainoo/wharton and then when you bring on runners/outlets in watkins and bowen, he takes off his creators in kane/saka/foden... how on earth are watkins and bowen going to be found if their providers have been taken off??? we're talking about literal basics here 😂😂😂
Gary Neville gives accolades to Southgate for having the deep conviction to take three players off the field after 70 minutes play, as though this is an indication of managerial ability rather than an acknowledgement that Southgate got the original team completely wrong.
These lads have been outstanding for a number of years and the way in which Southgate molded them into a team, mr brown tongue, no wonder the players and management team at England cant be arsed, with kiss arses like Neville they think they have won everything already and after the two previous horrendous failings the FA thought Southgate was doing a fantastic job, listening to all the ex England players who may just be waiting for job offers with the FA
Considering what Southgate has available, he should play a 4-1-4-1 with Rice as the sole CDM, Foden & Bellingham as the 2 8s/10s, Saka & Gordon providing the width on both sides, with Kane up top. This way you've got every single player besides Trippier playing in his natural position, giving the best chance of performing to their best levels. So Gordon coming in for Trent, & getting Foden back in his favored central position is the two obvious solutions. Southgate kind of needs to wrap a few of his best XI in cotton wool, as he can't lose players like Pickford, Walker, Stones, Trippier, & Rice in particular because there is no quality alternative.
This is the team we must play: Watkins(ST) Kane(ST) Foden(CAM) Rice(CM) Bellingham(CM) Trippier(LWB) Guehi(CB) Stones(CB) Walker(CB) Trent(RWB) Pickford(GK) We need to play to our strengths which is having many highly technical players on the ball (like man city), we are not blessed with having elite players with blistering pace. Trips can play as a more conventional left back and stones move forward into midfield. Trent can bomb forward and have a free role. In posession, back 3 of Trips, Guehi, Walker can handle it (rice can drop back if needed). Use trent, stones, rice to get the ball up the pitch to the likes of foden, kane into shooting positions. Allow bellingham to maraud forward to crash into the box late, tell watkins to just stay up high and make runs to stretch defence. In this system the likes of saka, gordon would miss out but I think this system gives us the best chance of winning as opposed to relying on moments on individual brilliance from saka and gordan cos when teams double up on them then theres nothing they can do. Plus, imagine bringing on saka and gordon in the 70th minute when teams are knackered...
Klopp or Tuchel. I don’t care that they’re German it’s irrelevant. Germans don’t seem to mind that Jamal Musiala was raised and trained, went through the academy and played for the English national youth team
People don’t like to hear this but there’s a lot of conflicting statements from the analysts. According to everyone on TV and radio there are 8 midfielders and forwards who “have to play”
Could we go to a 4-3-3 system as most players play in this system for their clubs🤔 Gordon needs to have a go on the left for a start, we need more width.
Kobbie Mainoo played against City in the FA Cup final. Now, City had Rodri, De Bruyne… he’s played consistently in the EPL against big teams and did well. Surely he would have done better than Trent against Denmark. 😊
The most frustrating thing is, most of us can see the changes needed that will instantly make us 20% better. Get Trent out of that midfield for Wharton, a player that can help control a game and plays positive forward passes. Bench Kane, who is clearly nowhere near 100% fit, for Watkins or Toney, depending on what you want from your striker. Play Foden as a 10, and bring in Gordon on the left so we have pace on both flanks. He's also superb at pressing, as is Watkins. Bellingham is absolutely shattered, probably as much mentally as physically, and needs to be rested. If Foden also isn't producing in the 10 role for England then you have Cole Palmer to bring on. It's ridiculous that talents such as Palmer, Gordon and Wharton haven't kicked a ball yet and Mainoo has had 5 minutes.
Complete falshehood that Rice and Phillips worked well. Wasn't successful against big teams, or even great against mediocre teams, evidenced throughout tournaments. Absolutley false to say we kept up possession in attack because of that pairing. That pairing seen us not be able to hold on to the ball, progress and get out just the same. It was one of the main reasons for how it ended up against Italy. Its been even worse the past couple games now because we've got a RB playing there, absurd! And NO, we DON'T need a way to accomodate Trent, we need a proper working system and the players slot into that, we certainly the players to do so! What is the obsession with him?! He really isn't key to us in the first 11. Other countries also have decent players on the bench. Deal with it! The TEAM comes first! If that means sacrificing one or two then thats how it goes!!
@HarryKanee The whole team was. But if you cant differentiate between medicraty and an actual working midfield pair able to control a game, then you're watching something else. Did you even watch, not just the final either. Phillips isnt great on the half turn and cant carry the ball forward. SG wanted to mirror him playing long balls with Trent. It isnt what the priority should be. Anyone and their mother seem it. Not you though
@@Allegro_Giusto Different story if Watkins is the striker then Trent can be played as midfielder because at least Trent long ball will be chased by Watkins with speedy run.
I would play a 3 4 2 1. Walker, stones and guehi at the back. Rice and Bellingham in the middle. Gordon and saka playing winger/wingback. I know it's not their natural positions, but they're young, fit and have the ability to do the job. Then palmer and foden playing behind kane.
I’ve commented this on a few things but…. The issue is the midfield. We’re letting teams come onto us and pin us back because there’s no one in midfield who is comfortable enough on the half turn receiving it from the backline. (Jude is playing further forward) It’s just constantly getting recycled out wide, then back to Pickford, then kicked long. Having to rely on individual quality from out wide as opposed to building from the back as a team. That’s why Wharton needs to be starting. You NEED that Spanish type midfielder who pieces it all together and is comfortable receiving the ball to feet with their back to goal, instantly on the half turn looking for forward passes. That’s clearly what he’s tried to do with Trent because of his phenomenal passing range but he’s not comfortable receiving it with his back to goal, same with Declan rice and we’ve nearly conceded stupid goals because of it. It’s an absolute waste if Wharton doesn’t start the Slovenia game. It would drastically change the tempo of our game and control we have in possession as other players would bounce off of him. You saw it in his brief cameo vs Bosnia, he was the player that everything went through. This ‘lack of caps’ or him being so young is irrelevant. He’s slotted right into that palace midfield coming from the championship and I can only imagine how good he’d play with so much talent around him.
We have a manager who is incapable of finding footballing solutions. You can see him on the touch line crossing his toes that someone will have an individual moment of brilliance to get us over the line, as he has absolutely no idea how to adapt his team either before or during the game
He's essentially Steve Bruce when he was at Newcastle hope for the best defensively and send the ball up to saint Maximin and hope and pray he doesn't something wild.
which means drop Foden and Trent not because they are bad but Bellingham is better than Foden in that 10/8 position Trent doesnt play as a midfielder over Gallagher, Wharton or Mainoo Plus Trippier and Walker while not as talent on the ball as Trent are overall better fullbacks for a knockout 1 leg game
@@imo098765Jude is a 8 not no damn 10 and he should be alongside rice and Foden at 10 he’s the one that can receive the ball in tight spaces and create
I think Gary is right. Since you do not have width nor def midfielders the way to go is to move Walker to 3rd CB, move Trent to wingback and Jude to 8.
Shut up Gary about Southgate have broken that mole about the team sitting back after scoring a goal. That statement was blasphemous at best. This is part of why England suffer in tournaments because you are in cahoots with the FA man.
SINCE THE WORLD CUP 1986 I’VE NEVER SEEN A MANAGER THAT PLAY 3 RIGHTS BACKS IN THEIR STARTING 11 HE DIDNT EVEN TAKE 1 FULLY FIT LEFT BACK HOW ???? LUKE SHAW SHOULD NOT BE NOWHERE NEAR THE SQUAD HE’S NOT FIT SIMPLE PLAY YOUR BEST PLAYERS IN THEIR BEST POSITIONS CHANGE IT IF IS NOT WORKING TILL YOU GET THE BALANCE RIGHT
In view of left side crisis, should review the formation in this competition. Perhaps can start with a back three of Walker, Stones, Guerhi. Trent or Trippier can play right wing back to support Saka at right wing. On the left side, just have either Gordon or Bowen as left winger. Midfield three of Rice, Bellingham or Gallagher (as deeper duo), with either Foden or Palmer to be central playmaker 10. As for centre forward, depending on opposition or rotation within games, either Kane, Watkins or Toney plays.
The problem is simple, it's not the players. It's about the way England play football. This has been a problem for years that's gone unresolved. England can't play nice silky high-tempo football like these players are use to at Premier League level. We need a manager who plays football the way Klopp and Guardiola does to get the best out of them. In other words, the issue is Gareth Southgate and needs to be shown the South gate on his way out.
I think he's got to change the formation a bit 3-3-2-2 Pickford Walker-Guehi-Stones Trent-Rice-Gordon Bellingham-Foden Kane-Watkins Back-3 will be strong. Rice as the DM. Trent and Gordon as wing backs who can drop back to midfield if needed to defend. Bellingham and Foden just behind the 2 penalty-box strikers. Kane and Watkins up front. Watkins' pace up front will be a huge bonus because Kane does not stretch defenses. Trent and Gordon can beat players and fire in crosses to 2 target men.
South Gate is conservation and plays dull defensive football. It’s not new. You guys support him because he is likable and well spoken. He has a wealth of attacking options but the team plays the way it does because of south gate. This is the way the team has played throughout his tenure.
Formation: 443 attacking with attacking wing backs. Assuming that the formation allow England a lot more time on the ball, playing higher up the pitch pinning our opponents back I would play.. Pickford TTA Guehi Stones Walker rice Bellingham Foden Saka kane Bowen Points of discussion, tripper on the left is dead, Completely kills his passing game and for me makes him a dormant player just sort of there not offering much to the team at all. Walkers main attribute is his pace, from an attacking and defensive stand point this is what causes and also gets him out of trouble. No matter what side of the pitch his plays his spirit speed is not affected and his passing game is not elite so you don’t lose out on as much having him there. Trent has to play at RB offers far to much in this formation not to start, passing range and out put when runs are made is to much to leave on the bench (again higher defensive line, more possession and far more attacking style before the haters flock in) and before some talk about playing stronger teams, them games will of course be more open and back and forth which is how most elite teams play against each other, end to end high tempo football. Some will say more chance of us getting countered, but this means they is a lot of space on the pitch and more room to counter. We have lots of talent on the pitch and should not be afraid of this. Midfield 3: putting a end to the whole debate of how can we get them all playing where there effective. this formation allows them all to play where there know Rice 6 Bellingham 8(box to box) Yes he’s been 10 for Madrid but plays 8 just as well and allows foden to be central 10 (Such a strong midfield 3 by the way) Finally front three: Saka and kane pick there self but a harry kane who don’t just sit and wait at the top of the pitch, let’s take advantage of his link up with wingers and foden This leave the LW position open for actually winger who can hold more of the width like Saka stretching the defence and linking up with the attacking wing backs. I would personally play Bowen. But honestly I think they is 4 names you could argue could start here so each to there own.
@@richardellis4636Trent is playing out of position. And blaming him is definitely going to be the go-to for the English when the inevitable happens. Never self reflect eh?!
PICK FIT TEAM on FRIDAY at 13.30pm. Unfit front 4 deprived Trent of passing options as forwards sank deeper. He can't pass to corner flags can he?. Trents a UCL winner & will be fine at righ wing back as per Gary Neville. He needs Salah & Darwin & Jota like runs to stretch rivals back 3. Trent was let down by Kane's unfitness/hurt back. Trent created most chances & long passes ( in only 54 mins, more than Rice did in 90+ minutes ) Are we gonna waste another world class talent like Hoddle or make it work like Italy did with Pirlo. It's time to go 3-4-3 with Kyle-Dunk-Guehi at the back & Trent on the right & Shaw on the left with Palmer-Watkins-Gordon up front. Gareth should pick the team on Friday at 13.30pm (at Munich time) so that boys can get ready for battle by visualising victory over next 4 sunsets before 4 nice sleeps. Then, after about 9 good nights of sleep, England will have Jude-Saka-Kane & Foden & Stones back to full fitness. With Palmer & Watkins & Gordon ready to come off the bench if energy levels drop again in the KO stages. Don Capello & Didi Hamman are spot on. Watch at 21 mins when Pickford passed the ball to Denmark, leading to 3 mins of pressure in our half. Schmiecal wuda wasted time & calmed his defence down & given them a breather in very humid heavy air. JP did the same in last 3 tournaments & after taking the lead, he becomes too aggressive & he starts giving the ball away. Watch Don Capello's chat on Sky TV after defeat to France in Qatar. Our Italian ex-boss was very frustration at Pickford. 5 - GS made fast good subs but needed to take tired unfit Stones off & go 3-4-3 with Trent out wide & Kyle in a back 3 with Guehi & Dunk (to handle the big Danes). 6 - Harry's bad pass to give goal away was due to a tired brain & body. GS may have to limit him to 30-60 mins a game as he is giving GS the same problem that unfit Jimmy Greaves gave Sir Alf in 1966. Greaves was Englands most clinical finisher & has a better goal per game ratio than Kane, Owen, Shearer & Lineker. Subs were not allowed in 1966 so Sir Alf had to drop Greaves. GS does not need to do that. 7 - Gordon & Palmer have been on 🔥, just like Sir Geoff Hurst was in 1966. As per top pundits Souness & Carra & Shearer. 8 - Messi & Argentina started slowly & lost to low ranked Saudi. Then the old GOAT Messi & thier aging winger & CB all got fit after 3 x OK games. 9 - Carra is spot on, ManC #10 is KDB not nice Foden. Plan B of dropping Jude to 8 may not be as good as Plan A with fully fit Jude Palmer Gordon Watkins giving Trent passing options. Foden & Kane & Saka may have to become impact super subs coming on for the last 30 mins until they get fully fit & catch 🔥 (when they can start) 10 - Don't bash Gareth & the boys. In Qatar the top pundits (possibly Carra & Souness & Pougatch & Sir Kenny D) said Messi will be unstoppable when he gets fully fit & catches fire 🔥. Leo got fit & Did what he Does Best. Get Harry Foden Saka Jude fit by taking the pressure off them in game 3 (as 4 points mean we are in it to win it now. We are in the KO stages). Either rest em in game 3 or use than as super subs in 2nd half. Priority is to peak in the final. Grow game by game. 11 - Calm down. Do yo daily prayers, sleep well, get fully focussed & be brave. As brave Kyle said, tournaments are like the UCL, when the reds ( LFC ) lost 0-3 to Messi Xavi Ineista of Barcelona. 99.9% of pundits wrote off Klopps boys but they still won the cup via that brave corner by Trent. The reds were also losing 0-3 at half time to Don Carlo's AC Milan & still won the trophy via that brave headed goal by Stevie G 🏆. Man U were losing in the 90th minute & still defeated Bayern via that injury time clinical finish by Teddy & Ole. CALM DOWN - PRAY/Meditate WELL - SLEEP WELL - FULLY FOCUSSED - BE BRAVE. @@ArjunGhag-ix7te so you saying drop a midfielder to play Trent but then you also need an extra defender to cover for his lack of ability Also UCL winner against Spurs with a cheap penalty AND needs baby sitting from 2 DMs and a 3rd midfielder playing as a DM. With Firmino playing a defensive striker
He's the captain, and the best goal scorer we have. It's the system and lack of service. Why not play someone up there with him before you decide to drop him?
@@Ajs_1988 you would drop Bellingham? Or either of the other wingers? He congests the field of play. He’s not even winning 50/50 balls. I’m not saying drop him immediately but Kane has to be looked at as well.
Drop Kane, False 9 in Bellingham with Foden Saka and Palmer around him, Stones and Rice in midfield (why is no one mentioning Stones for this position is ridiculous) back 4 of Shaw if fit, walker, guehi and Gomez
Southgate is lost out here. You have two exceptional strikers sitting on the bench - Watkins and Toney - that you can rotate putting alongside Harry Kane. This guy however would rather shoehorn Trent into midfield. It's actually criminal.
Solution is not difficult: Pickford Trent Walker Stones Gomez Rice Mainoo/Wharton Saka Bellingham Gordon Kane When attacking turns into 3 at the back like City/Liverpool play. Trent moves forward to make use of his forward thinking passes and crossing. When Kane drops deep Bellingham can moves forward like he has for Madrid. Could even still play Foden on left and Jude and Phil swap with fluidity like they do for their clubs (but I think a natural winger in Gordon offers more defensively and attacking). The only way we will do well with this manager is to play a rigid formation with two dm's and only one of either Foden or Jude. He doesn't have the capacity or nouse to play the above.
"Some coaches stay around with the same team far too long,to the point where the team take on the 'character 'of the coach to the teams detriment"..This was taken from a Tutor at Loughborough college many years ago.. I have a feeling that England, as knowledgable as their coach/manager is, are proving this point. Good but without flair and adventure...
If we have the ball we control the tempo cause they don't know what we're gonna do. But Southgate keeps on telling Pickford to boot the ball to Kane but Kane can't run coz he's not fast so we lose the ball and let Denmark play
We need to stop putting our best players out and for them not performing...we've tried this for years and years....put out a team that plays well but not necessarily the best player. They are not best players if they can't play their best in these unfamiliar positions in an unbalanced team.
It's G S's job for fs to make changes and have a semblance of tactics.Playing players out of position is madness and his squad picked with a paucity of mid-fielders terrified me,madison and grealish should be there
I can't understand why this is so difficult. Pick people who actually know their positions to solve obvious deficiencies. We're not stretching play, so get Gordon on the left and if Kane can't make it work with him and Saka, then use Watkins instead or play Kane and Watkins together and change formation. At 10 play a 10 - Foden (in the right position...) or Palmer. At the base of midfield Rice and Bellingham and if you need to change that if one or other is terrible ( like yesterday) use Wharton or Mainoo or Gallagher. It's been awful but it seems obvious why. The only fix that seems difficult is at left back where we don't have a fit natural left back.
It’s always the same thing trying to play the biggest names instead of selecting the best team. Bring Foden in the centre as a no 10 and play Gordon on the left drop Bellingham to a no 8 where he can go forward and help Rice out. I also think you have to drop Kane and start Watkins and if we need a goal bring on Kane It’s crazy in my opinion to be experimenting with Trent in midfield it doesn’t work. If he has to miss out so be it it’s about playing the best team.
Might get abit of stick for this “oh cos you’re a united fan!” Maguire ran out with the ball 5/10 times a game. The back four (maybe other than Walker) barely leave the halfway line in possession. It’s like we’re missing a centre mid in possession cos of maguire not playing. John stones has been unbelievable for city playing that new pep position really. Mainoo for Trent or Bellingham deeper foden 10, Gordon on left. Rashford grealish left out now looks horrific! Atleast bring one of them!!! 🤦♂️good watching England isn’t it?! 🤣
There's a number of issues this tournament. Firstly, experiments in a major tournament? Bizarre! Secondly, our attackers (Kane, Bellingham, Foden, Palmer, Saka) at club level are the highest chance creators in the league. Bringing them into a tournament and as a team struggling to register 5 shots on target per game? It's not that we've been playing a defensively tight France or Spain! Tactically somewhere along the way, we're being held back with slow and sloppy build up play. We can argue starting line ups all day long but without the correct team structure and tactics we may as well pack up.
Gary saying that Southgate didn’t pick players just because they played for big clubs. Anyone remember when Harry Maguire would be playing full 90s despite not touching the pitch for Man United?
It's a disgrace you all call Trent out and southgates a disgrace. Trent was our most productive midfielder, Rice was way to far back and hiding, Bellingham was useless. Trent was the one making the best passes and looking the most comfortable on the ball.
England teams always look stressed and pressured.. When they all came out on to the field yesterday I said to myself "this aint going to go well" The england squad need to be enjoying themselves, if it feels like work and too much effort it aint coming home! dissapointing!
He said Southgate picks on form. Yet he picked maguire for last few years playing like crap. He's playing a rb in cm. A 10 on the wing. A rb at lb. How about playing people where they play for club.
Not only imbalance, another issue is that too many attacking players want the freedom of the park. Kane, Jude, Foden essentially want to occupy the same positions.
"Other nations wouldn't do that" in regards to leaving Foden ot TAA out... No other country play's as many players as us out of position. Let's no kid ourselves, it's not like we're the only country with a crop of fantastic players. Italy, Spain, Germany have a lot of world class players but none of them are playing 3 RB's, 2 others out of position, no left back, forcing a player like Foden to play in a position he is not comfortable or the best in. It's mind blowing. Southgate's already lost us. We already criticise everything he does. It's his last tournament, why not just pick a group of completely random players and see where it takes us. Put on Palmer, Gordon, Watkins, Gomez, Wharton, Mainoo and just have a go! we've already lost hope in you Southgate, just do something different!
(my opinion) > 3-1-4-2 formation just like 2018. 3 CBs Stones, Guehi, Walker, Gallagher (Henderson type, energy, maintains posession), wing backs Alex Arnold and Tripper (Arnold awful in double pivot, play to his strengths, attacking and wipping in crosses), 2 CAMS Jude and Foden/Palmer, 2 attackers Kane and Saka, Saka keeps the opposing CBs further back due to his speed (similar to what Sterling did), Kane can peel off to receive ball which plays to his strengths. Southgate unfortunately will not change system - he will just change the players and results will stay the same. Still predict Quarter Finals and maybe a cheeky Semi, but not well received.
People seem to ignore the fact that Bellingham played well surrounded by Kroos, Vini, Rodrygo. Foden plays well woth KDB, Rodri, Haaland. Kane scored goals with Sane, Musiala. Bellingham didnt win the champions league on his own, to the amazement of some people. We don't have a balanced squad. We've thrown lego bricks at a dart board and wondered why we didn't hit a 180
No point Southgate taking the squad he has and then not trusting the majority of the squad and sticking with “tried and tested”. The performance against Denmark was embarrassing
Tactical problem: England have lost the midfield battle in the first 2 games. The tactical solution: Move Bellingham back into centre mid (who started his career with Birmingham there) with Rice - then start Bowden, Eze, or Palmer further up.
We can debate all we want about who should be playing where and blah blah blah , and would it make any difference who plays where and why , when we play with fear scared of conceding as opposed to taking risks and playing with aggression Spain showed exactly how to play last night against Italy
The only actual LW is Gordon and possibly Eze but doesn't start either of them....not even Palmer gets game time but brings on Bowen and wonders why it's going wrong
Why will Bellingham "obviously stay in the team" he had a bad game against Denmark, he has made dumb choices to get glory instead of making an easy pass, and he can do defensive work if he puts his ego aside. He has to play deeper and move Foden in, but this rhetoric of Bellingham's a must is destroying the England balance.
Playing a true left winger (Gordon) is essential when we have a right sided left back that offers no width. Play the world-class misfiring Foden where he wants to be as a 10. Play the "best player in the world" (Bellingham) in his favourite position as an 8. If Foden doesn't work, replace with Palmer at 60 mins.
Pickford TAA Walker Stones Guehi Shaw/Gordon Bellingham Wharton Rice Foden Kane Experimental but would be nice to see Gordon up and down the flank with his natural pressing and work rate. Wharton would sit, allowing Rice more freedom. Kane should finally receive crosses from TAA, so would stay up and not need to drop deep.
This tournament has at last shown Gareth Southgate for who he is. He's been fortunate with draws in other cup competitions but his ineptitude is there for all to see now.
When it is Erik Ten Hag, you guys never remember or talk about imbalance referring to Luke Shaw, when it’s Southgate, you make excuses of imbalance caused by only Luke Shaws absence. ETH complained about injuries and imbalance but the whole media wanted him out.
It would be ok to play a low block if we had the players to counter attack. Only player in the fron 3 that fits that system is Saka and Foden if he plays trough the middle.
Just listening to Neville leaves me in doubt as to why we've not won anything in 60 years.
'He'll have to upset a few lads' - he's the bloody manager!!
"Pick a team that works, not on reputation", two minutes later "i'd feel bad about leaving Foden or Trent out"
This is the problem!
Camavinga has had one of the best seasons at Madrid
But you don't see him starting for France because he doesn't directly fit the system. If this was Southgate he would be trying shoehorn him in somewhere just because of how well his season went at the club

Balance of the team, not right. Really?
Well, if you have a starting line-up with:
- 3 right backs, 2 out of position,
- no left back
- no left-sided player on the pitch
- one left back in the squad who is unfit and hasn’t played since February
- 3 no.10s with Bellingham, Foden and Kane (dropping too deep and effectively playing as a no.10)
- no player on the pitch with blistering pace on the left (in particular) to run into space behind the defence (eg no Stirling, Rashford or a Gordon, who’s actually in the squad!)
Any wonder that the balance of the team isn’t right? It’s a mess all of Southgate’s making.
Actually England have 2 very fit left-footed left back (Mitchell and Doughty) but Southgate rate injured player higher than not injured player.
Bench Kane, play Bellingham as 9 and move Foden to 10 then play Gordon as 11.
Voila.. it is end of story but Southgate think otherwise

@@ronnyron4681 Not quite. You’ve also got to deal with Trent in midfield. Would drop him, and start Mainoo. Wouldn’t play Bellingham as false 9. You have three forwards in the squad. If Kane isn’t quite fit and firing (and he isn’t) then play one of the other forwards.

sorry gary but you're just clueless... yesterday's showing was all on southgate, the players don't just turn up and perform terribly for no reason like that, we've seen them perform at an elite level this season
the problem is southgate and his complete misprofiling of players... if you're so deadset on playing trent (experimented for over a year apparently), then you should know that trent's best asset is his range passing over the top/around defensive structures, with that you MUST have runners/outlets to get the best out of him and yet we have gordon rotting on the bench and rashford on holiday...
anyone who understands football can see it's southgate at fault here, not the players

And then sack him
@benfuller2890 its an attacker with kane we saw what watkkins did within minutes, put someone up there with kane
@Ben-gd4db even if that happens southgate is literally just a defensive manager
This England side should not be lucking it's way through the group stages
it's very quintessential british... bringing on "energy" i.e. gallagher instead of someone who can keep it ticking and bring us up the field i.e. mainoo/wharton

The moment I saw it was an unchanged 11 I knew it was trouble. Trust the squad. Using them as a last resort is awful management

@@HaroldFordyI’m sure you know far more 😂
Easier said than done. The squad is weak in several areas.
You are bang on the money Rica Bellingham foden midfield a blind man can see same with gordan we've zero width down the left
This is the team we must play:
Watkins(ST) Kane(ST)
Foden(CAM)
Rice(CM) Bellingham(CM)
Trippier(LWB) Guehi(CB) Stones(CB) Walker(CB) Trent(RWB)
Pickford(GK)
We need to play to our strengths which is having many highly technical players on the ball (like man city), we are not blessed with having elite players with blistering pace.

According to everyone on TV and radio there are 8 midfielders and forwards who “have to play”
Could we go to a 4-3-3 system as most players play in this system for their clubs🤔
Gordon needs to have a go on the left for a start, we need more width.
We play 4-3-3 you plonker
What are you on about 💀 Phillips and rice were key to us getting to the final
@HarryKanee The whole team was. But if you cant differentiate between medicraty and an actual working midfield pair able to control a game, then you're watching something else. Did you even watch, not just the final either. Phillips isnt great on the half turn and cant carry the ball forward. SG wanted to mirror him playing long balls with Trent. It isnt what the priority should be. Anyone and their mother seem it. Not you though
Bench Foden, Trent, and Kane.

@@Allegro_Giusto
Different story if Watkins is the striker then Trent can be played as midfielder because at least Trent long ball will be chased by Watkins with speedy run.
Just passing through.

I think he's got to change the formation a bit
3-3-2-2
Pickford
Walker-Guehi-Stones
Trent-Rice-Gordon
Bellingham-Foden
Kane-Watkins
Back-3 will be strong.
Gary Neville such a successful manager himself! 🤦🏼♀️

Assuming that the formation allow England a lot more time on the ball, playing higher up the pitch pinning our opponents back I would play..
Pickford
TTA Guehi Stones Walker
rice
Bellingham Foden
Saka kane Bowen
Points of discussion, tripper on the left is dead, Completely kills his passing game and for me makes him a dormant player just sort of there not offering much to the team at all.
Midfield 3: putting a end to the whole debate of how can we get them all playing where there effective. this formation allows them all to play where there know
Rice 6
Bellingham 8(box to box)
Yes he’s been 10 for Madrid but plays 8 just as well and allows foden to be central 10
(Such a strong midfield 3 by the way)
Finally front three: Saka and kane pick there self but a harry kane who don’t just sit and wait at the top of the pitch, let’s take advantage of his link up with wingers and foden
This leave the LW position open for actually winger who can hold more of the width like Saka stretching the defence and linking up with the attacking wing backs. I would personally play Bowen. But honestly I think they is 4 names you could argue could start here so each to there own.

@@ArjunGhag-ix7te so you saying drop a midfielder to play Trent but then you also need an extra defender to cover for his lack of ability
Also UCL winner against Spurs with a cheap penalty AND needs baby sitting from 2 DMs and a 3rd midfielder playing as a DM. With Firmino playing a defensive striker
Good international managers know how to pick the best team to win. The bad ones pick the best players and shove them on a pitch and hope they win
Kane is not an automatic starter.
SuperSub for Kane, make Walker cpt.
@jn7891 No I would play a back 3, and play another striker
Drop Kane, False 9 in Bellingham with Foden Saka and Palmer around him, Stones and Rice in midfield (why is no one mentioning Stones for this position is ridiculous) back 4 of Shaw if fit, walker, guehi and Gomez
Southgate is lost out here. You have two exceptional strikers sitting on the bench - Watkins and Toney - that you can rotate putting alongside Harry Kane. This guy however would rather shoehorn Trent into midfield. It's actually criminal.
The problem everyone can see is Southgate doesn’t want to upset any of the players play them in there proper positions
Solution is not difficult:
Pickford
Trent Walker Stones Gomez
Rice Mainoo/Wharton
Saka Bellingham Gordon
Kane
When attacking turns into 3 at the back like City/Liverpool play.
Get Palmer on
We need to stop putting our best players out and for them not performing...we've tried this for years and years....put out a team that plays well but not necessarily the best player. They are not best players if they can't play their best in these unfamiliar positions in an unbalanced team.
It's G S's job for fs to make changes and have a semblance of tactics.Playing players out of position is madness and his squad picked with a paucity of mid-fielders terrified me,madison and grealish should be there
Personally, I'd play 6 Goalkeepers and 5 Defenders. Southgate isn't cautious enough for my liking.
Protecting Trent as much as possible because he's appeared on your show huh Gary?
When he took Luke Shaw that should’ve been warning signs and time for people to take GS to task
It's a squad game: the best players don't need to be on at the same time
It’s always the same thing trying to play the biggest names instead of selecting the best team.
Bring Foden in the centre as a no 10 and play Gordon on the left drop Bellingham to a no 8 where he can go forward and help Rice out.
I also think you have to drop Kane and start Watkins and if we need a goal bring on Kane
It’s crazy in my opinion to be experimenting with Trent in midfield it doesn’t work. If he has to miss out so be it it’s about playing the best team.
You have to play Cole Palmer !!
Some people might remember when the then England manager Kevin Keegan played Southgate in midfield, didn’t go well then either. Why again and why now?
England teams always look stressed and pressured.. When they all came out on to the field yesterday I said to myself "this aint going to go well" The england squad need to be enjoying themselves, if it feels like work and too much effort it aint coming home! dissapointing!
Wharton is the best at taking the ball with back to play and quickly threading balls forward. Have a look at the highlight reels
What would Keir Starmer do? 😂
Vote Reform. 🇬🇧
If there was a free kick, he wouldn't be in the wall. He'd be sitting on the fence
Play Dianne Abbott as a 10 .
Lie?
A fourth placed party? No wonder England can't win.
Bet you Gary won't send his CV when Southgate leaves but apparently he knows better😅
Typical British media not calling for the managers head instead the players🤦🏽♂️
People seem to ignore the fact that Bellingham played well surrounded by Kroos, Vini, Rodrygo. Foden plays well woth KDB, Rodri, Haaland. Kane scored goals with Sane, Musiala. Bellingham didnt win the champions league on his own, to the amazement of some people. We don't have a balanced squad. We've thrown lego bricks at a dart board and wondered why we didn't hit a 180
No point Southgate taking the squad he has and then not trusting the majority of the squad and sticking with “tried and tested”. The performance against Denmark was embarrassing
Southgate needs to change it up otherwise we can forget it. Give Palmer and Gordon a run out and Drop Kane to the bench for Watkins
Need to get Wharton in for control in midfield and Gordon on left to get in behind defence
I wonder if Gary could tell us how many decent teams in Southgate reign we have beaten, I can't think of any, answers on a postcard
England are scared to push forward because the idea of a 0-2 defeat is just too much.
Neville being very diplomatic and nice. Just say it Gary…..it was shocking , and other lesser teams have already sorted this sort of stuff out.
Gary’s capping on the TTA take, he just couldn’t say Walker’s the number one lol
Trent won't be getting into the world cup squad under a new manager. Reese james is no 1 when fit.
He is not a generational talent…he just has a good right foot
If Mainoo and Wharton aren’t experienced at this level then why take them if they’re not up to it?
Pickford
TAA Walker Stones Guehi Shaw/Gordon
Bellingham Wharton Rice
Foden
Kane
Experimental but would be nice to see Gordon up and down the flank with his natural pressing and work rate.
Come on let's give Southgate a break, he's clearly pining for Kalvin Phillips, bless him.
It would be ok to play a low block if we had the players to counter attack. Only player in the fron 3 that fits that system is Saka and Foden if he plays trough the middle.
Give Gareth a life time contract i think he is doing a great job
How are your lot getting on ? I couldn't find your lot in the groups
