  • Welcome to the battle(Mini) of the Speyside!
    Today We have a semi-blind Scotch Whisky blind showdown featuring four bottles from two distilleries, all of which are Sherry influenced Speyside Single Malt. In the lineup we have GlenAllachie 12 year old, GlenAllachie 15 year old, Tamdhu 12 year old, and finally Tamdhu 15 year old. Each of these are wonderful whiskies with very similar profiles, which really made this into an interesting and difficult challenge. Which whisky will come out on top in this Battle of the Speyside?
    The contenders are:
    GlenAllachie 12 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 46% ABV, NCF(Non Chill-Filtered), NCA(No Colour Added)
    GlenAllachie 15 Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 46% ABV, NCF, NCA
    Tamdhu 12 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 43% ABV, CF, NCA
    Tamdhu 15 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 46% ABV, NCF, NCA

    I've tried all these and are all very good but Edradour Caledonia beats them all. Great cap 9/10

      I am only just starting to enjoy my Dougie Mclean Caledonia bottle :) Do you also prefer it to the Signatory Vintage unchill-filtered Edradour 10 Single Sherry Cask? I've enjoyed each of them I've had. Excited to discover more Edradour. Cheers 🥃

      @@whiskyonthewestcoast I don't have the Signatory yet but it is on my long list I hide from my wife.

    4 great drams and appreciate the honest results. blind tastings are not easy but 100% the best way to do it! I've been pretty hard on the GlenAllachie hype train the last couple years but I think it's well deserved. Billy Walker certainly knows his barrels. Really hope their price stays realistic but availability and price is about to get worse here in Canada. I've been able to pick up a 10yr Batch 3, Batch 6, 8 yr, 12yr, 15yr (x2), 11 Moscatel and 11 Port wood. So I'm happy to have a little stash to weather the storm. Personal favourite is the 15, but I think the 12 is the best overall buy. Cheers from the East Coast.

      Thanks, Coach! They really aren't easy haha. I have been suspicious of the GA 8 year release, it seemed to coincide with a $20 increase on the 12 year. Still, looking forward to cracking open my 8 year to see what it's like. Long live our GA stash! Also, what part of the East Coast? I may have grown up on the West Coast but was born on the East Coast. Most of my family is back in Cape Breton. Cheers 🥃

      @@whiskyonthewestcoast I was really impressed with the 8 year old. Haven't had it in a blind tasting yet, but it's solid value bottle for sure. I'm in NB but I used to recruit for a university and my main area was Nova Scotia so I've been to Cape Breton multiple times. Absolutely one of the nicest places in Canada. If you're ever in NB - check out the Lunar Rogue - one of the best whisky bars in Canada - 1000 bottles on site. NB also has a great whisky festival - NB Spirits Festival every November. Awesome way to sample a huge selection whisky and other spirits. Pretty amazing festival for little old NB. Cheers.

      I'd love to check out the NB Spirits festival, I've heard lots about it and it sounds like a great time. On top of that, if I ever did get a chance to go I could check out my first childhood home in Miramichi! Whenever we go back east it's always been back to Cape Breton instead of N.B. I'll have to change that :)

    You have a great straight forward, down to earth style! Love it! Quite nice head to head and as a never buy 43% I’m so glad it was last place. Most single malts have something good to be said about them but the “adulterated “ low ABV 😊chillfiltered ones will always lose out to Craft Presentation scotches…..as you proved again! As the owner of 4bottles of Glenallachie 12 and only 1 of 15, you reinforced my palate Big Time! Keep doing what you’re doing! Enjoy

      Thanks for the great feedback Cecil! Sounds like you are stocked up for the longhaul on GA 12! I was also really happy to see that my suspicions surround the 43%, Chill-filtered status of Tamdhu 12 were confirmed in the blind. Cheers 🥃

    Great blind showdown of excellent sherried Speysiders Matt. The GlenAllachie 12 is a great value dram and I have gone through a couple of bottles. I am enjoying the GA 15 at the moment and is a great bottle as well. Let's hope GlenAllachie stays consistent in quality in coming years and yes of course we want the prices of GA to remain in the affordable bracket.

    Great Video. Love your blind showdowns not an easy task. I have never had the Tamdhu, but but some now. I love the GlenAllachie 12 which is also a fair price, so great it came out on top

      Yeah, that 12 Year is still just a banger! My bottle is getting low. I should probably get a back up at that price while I can. Cheers 🥃

    Not surprised that the 43% Tamdhu finished last. GlenAllachie 15 has had less Time with Billy Walker than the 12. Looking forward to the 12 next year or later after more time with Billy.

    Love these comparison videos and hope to see more covering the available OB range for brands. I’m not really a fan sweet sherry or raisin flavors so curious how u’d compare and recommend the GA range for me?

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Рік тому

      Thank Marc! Unfortunately, my experience with GA so far is sweet, sherry flavours. They have experimented with oak types(French, Spanish, Chinkapin Oak) which seemed less sherry dominant. There's a Koval Rye cask too. I have an unopened bottle of GA 8 Year that could be a more all around balanced approach(hopefully). The GA 4 Year Peated might be too, though incredibly difficult to get. Wish I had a more helpful answer.

    TOmorrow, the Tamdhu's will rank ahead of G'Allachie . . . so ..................

    • @whiskyonthewestcoast
      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Рік тому

      I mean, It's entirely possible! :) I guess the good thing is that The Tamdhu 12 was consistently 4th, and the GlenAllachie 12 was consistently 1st. Those 15's switched so they proved tricky. Either way, a fun experiment!
