  • This episode, I compare a Tamdhu 12 to the travel-exclusive Glenmorangie 12 The Accord. This Tamdhu 12 year old Speyside Scotch that has been aged in first fill and refill Oloroso Sherry casks. I bought this in Paphos, Cyprus at the Crossroads Cava, a whisky shop that I highly recommend you visit if you’re visiting Paphos.

    Thanks for the shout out! I hope the Tamdhu 12 opens up a bit more, still, clearly a better dram than the Glenmorangie Accord. I just picked up Tamdhu Batch 6! It is not open yet, but admittedly, I am looking forward to it. Cheers to finding better drams along the way and my your journey continue to bring joy!

      You deserve the shout outs for always publishing great advice! I'm finding more notes in the Tamdhu 12 as I sip it in the evenings. Enjoying whisky more often lately is also helping. My 6-8 week vacation from the aqua vitae has required me to retrain my palate somewhat. Slàinte mhath!

    Absolutely love the Tamdhu 12... It's a stunning whisky and as you said the batch strength is sherry heaven! Did you get round to booking a tour at Glengoyne?

    • @WhiskyRiffs
      @WhiskyRiffs  Рік тому

      I have not booked a Glengoyne tour yet. We've been working on a lot of trip planning beyond Broughty Ferry and Nice, which has left us with very little specific planning for either of those locations. It is becoming more of a priority though. ;)

    Always found the non-sherry Glenmoragie expressions to be uniformly more floral than I like. I'm wondering whether blending the base notes with the sherry is causing the souring, which from your expression appears to be prevalent on first tasting rather than on the finish. Enjoy Paphos, and cheers.

    • @WhiskyRiffs
      @WhiskyRiffs  Рік тому

      I would agree that Glenmorangie expressions lean towards floral/sweet notes. That helps for expressions like Quinta Ruban, where certain types of port are sweeter and others more dry. It could also be their choice of sherry casks - there are so many varieties to choose from and each distiller has their favorites. Thanks, Paphos has been very relaxing so far. Cheers!

    I just compared a Tamdhu 12 against a Royal Brackla 12 & the Tamdhu wins hands down. Like you I love the Batch strength. The Tamdhu 12 is a poor cousin against the 15yo however. Its a must try !!

      It could have been your environment. I almost always give whisky a second or third tasting at different times to make sure. I hope you have a better experience next time. Cheers!

    If u dont like sherry from Glenmo , it means you CAN distinguish between various casks or types of sherry (oloroso, amoroso, amontillado, matusalem, PX, etc) . . . BRAVO ! ----------- I stop buying Glenmo some 8 years ago when marketing was too cheesy and prices start to exceed quality , BUT, I buy the cheap Glenmo X to blend other cheaper blends (Famous Grouse, Cutty Sark ...) to bring up the malt percentage.

    • @WhiskyRiffs
      @WhiskyRiffs  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the compliment, Timothy! I'm not sure I know the kind of sherry from a tasting, but I do know what I like. And I will agree with you about the direction of Glenmorangie. When marketing drives the distillation decisions, I see red flags. Highland Park has released a few expressions that didn't seem to have a cask or aging basis to their creation. Cheers!

    I thought the lasanta was overrated. The nose on the accord was good but the palate was underwhelming. The tamdhu 12 was good and makes me want to try more in the lineup

    On the Whiskybase Thamdu rates 83.29 and Glenmorangie Accord 83.78 which means do not follow 1 opinion because whisky rating depends so much on a person preference.

      I'd agree that $250 is on the high side and the price I see in my former home of San Francisco. I can buy it in Paphos for €219, but still not a price I'd pay today for it while I'm traveling.
