Thanks to your video I was able to replace the belt on my civic in ~20 minutes. It was the first time I've ever done maintenance on my car outside of fluids, and I was a bit worried, but it went fine. It felt really good to do it myself and save $200.
thanks, did mine yesterday after watching several videos. One thing I did, since I was by myself, was loop an elastic through the belt and over the pointy post one the top motor mount? This held tension on the belt so it would not come off the lower wheels I put it on, but it also gave me some slack when needed to get it around other ones. Then it was still held tight at the top ready to go when I did the last pully on top. I started at the bottom in the wheel well. Took about 20 min, most of which was constantly checking my routing diagram. Go slow on the tensioner, I saw someone snap one off.
Out of all the videos I’ve posted about working on vehicles, my 2012 Honda Civic stumped me on finding out how to access the tensioner and once you pointed it out, it took no time at all! Appreciate the video and keep on keepin on! 🤙🏼
Could not have done it without you, especially with your diagram. Thank you very much! I was black from the elbows down to my finger tips on both arms with smudges on my face as well.
If the car has over 100k on the alternator , it is a good idea to change the alternator since the belt is off. I neglected changing it on my wife's BMW while doing basically the same serpentine belt procedure and it went bad and stranded my wife 100 miles from home. And it set me back a pretty penny since one is pretty much at the mercy of a shop and their labor and part fees.
The alternator is a part that is only replaced if it is faulty or not charging to its full potential. The Alternator going bad on your BMW I can say from experience is just bad luck and or coincidence since you had just replaced the serpentine belt. You can spin the alternator pulley and check if it is binding and consider replacement. You can have the alternator tested to see how it is performing to get a better idea on its health. But as a professional in the field I would not recommend an alternator due to mileage. I would only be able to present the state of health of the alternator explain the readings and the client would need to make the ultimate decision on replacement if it is currently charging as designed.
I changed the belt and the new belt makes a skeaky noise when I accelerate does that mean I need a certain brand of serpine belt ? U bought a good year brand
I got the OEM belt from BMW. The noise could be coming from the belt tensioner. Or the new belt could a little too tight. I would first check the tensioner and see if the noise is coming from there. You can either spray some WD-40 at the pulley and see if it will quiet down. Just don’t spray too much because the new belt can slip off. Try and keep it close to the pulley only. A second option would be to grab a long screw driver, extension or a thin metal rod and use it as a stethoscope to listen for the noise. You really need to be careful doing this because the belt is moving fast and you don’t want that rod getting caught and pulled away from you.
What about the timing chain? Does it ever need to be replaced? My 2012 is at 92,000 and has had oil changes every 5,000 miles. What happens if the serpentine belt breaks? Will it cause interference? Are any of those pulleys using timing knotches?
I am not an expert for Honda Vehicles but here are my thoughts. As far as timing chains there shouldn’t be a maintenance interval. You replace it if it breaks, stretches or if some timing chain guides break. Then you can replace it once it has been proven through diagnosis that it is defective. Since you have been keeping up with your oil changes I wouldn’t have any worry about damage to your timing chain at this point. The serpentine belt if it breaks will not damage any valves as the timing is kept with the timing chain. The only pulley that has a timing mark is the crank pulley. But it is only needed if the timing chain is adjusted. If you are just replacing the serpentine belt you can remove it and install it without worry of causing interference or damage to valves.
Hey so I’m thinking it might be time to replace my belt. Did you notice anything that notified you that it was time to replace your belt ? I’m having a squealing sound when I accelerate and a puttering when I come to a stop or idle. Do these sound similar or familiar to your diagnostics ?
A squealing sound usually indicates a worn out pulley. It can be a belt tensioner or an idler pulley. Sometimes you can have a faulty alternator pulley, AC compressor pulley or power steering pulley. Also to note. Just because the pulley of one of these components is making noise doesn’t necessarily mean that component is broken. It can still work but just make noise. You can inspect the ribbed side of the belt and check for cracks or fraying on the sides of the belt. This is a good indicator that the belt should be replaced. The owner of this car just wanted the belt replaced because the car was coming up on 100K miles if I remember correctly. They didn’t want to wait for it to snap on them.
it was actually harder than I thought, specially it was already dark out and I was on the sidewalk with a flashlight. Needed wifey to help hold the belt in place at the crank and compressor while I was working to get the belt on top. definitely won't be doing it at night again..lol
The pushpins shouldn’t break you have to pop the middle clip out once you pop that out the other bottom clip just slides right out they shouldn’t break
That pulley rententioner by your self is a b!@ch I’m waiting for my friend now to hold that thing open for me. I don’t have the large end wrench to do the duo method.

Local shop wants 140 to do mine !! No way!!!
Dude, thank you so much for making this video. It's exactly what I was looking for & now you saved me a few bob from the mechanic!
That’s great! Glad it helped you save some money!
Great video. Will save me $100 of mechanic charge. Thumbs up to Friendly Mechanic.
That's great! That right there is what the channel is for! Happy to see people saving money!!!👍🏼

Great to hear!
Thank you. Ive been looking around how to put a torque wrench in there. Seems to much of tight spot to access.
Do you always need to replace that idler pulley when you change the belt?
No you don’t need to always replace it. Only if it fails.
I did not replace mine when i did it. If it squeals in the future, I will know exactly how to fix from this video.
Is same engine setup to honda crossroad
Could not have done it without you, especially with your diagram. Thank you very much! I was black from the elbows down to my finger tips on both arms with smudges on my face as well.
Sounds like you got in there haha. Nice job 👍🏼
What’s the part number for the idler pulley?
Do I HAVE to change that pulley when I change the belt?
No you don’t have to replace it. Only if it’s defective.
Thanks fpr sharing, is it necessary to change idler pully?
No it’s not necessary. You can go without replacing the idler.
It’s a good idea to change it out though.
Ok thanks😊

Yeah because alternators are so cheap...right 🙄
Belts not that hard to remove so I would highly recommend not changing the alternator. Most alternators will last over 200k

Is that Motor belt and alternator belt 2in1?? And every time when you change it why not Change water pump?
There is also a 31110-R1A-A02 number, what is the difference?
Good video. Thanks for being real about some of the issues along the way.
SO good! Thank you for going through all of the details too. Really helpful and I really appreciate it!! 🙏🤙
👍🏼
Do these instructions work on a 2010 Honda Civic as well?
Yes they are very similar
gooden tight, i like that spec
👍🏼
Very nice video. Helps prep for my swap. Thanks!
What kind of pulley did you replace? I rewinded the video but kept hearing "Islander Pulley." What are you saying there?
@2:35
It is called an idler pulley.

I found it easier to place the bolt in the pully while i replaced it, took less space

Change your PCV valve. That fixed my puttering issue, very cheap and easy to fix.
Hey, quick question guy. How long will it take to change serpentine belt with basic mechanical knowledge. I have all the tools tho. Thanks in advance
Should be about an hour or 2.
it was actually harder than I thought, specially it was already dark out and I was on the sidewalk with a flashlight. Needed wifey to help hold the belt in place at the crank and compressor while I was working to get the belt on top. definitely won't be doing it at night again..lol
Good 👍🏼 But I want drive belt size. So please tell me the belt number 🙌🏼
The belt part number is linked in the description.
Here it is and also an Amazon affiliate link Serpentine belt OEM 31110-R1A-A01: amzn.to/3Mull3a
very detial love it
very helpful - thanks!
Very detailed, thanks 👍
Glad I could help 👍🏼
The pushpins shouldn’t break you have to pop the middle clip out once you pop that out the other bottom clip just slides right out they shouldn’t break
One came out nice, the other I broke the entire top off and the pin stayed in. I just left it that way since it still held tight.
Thanks for sharing--great video!
I appreciate the video man, thanks a lot!
Glad to be of service!
Great video. Danke

wht if you snap a bit of your tensioner when trying to lift?
