  • Short Video, My Hobie Outback On A Thule Hullavator.
    With the fear of denting and deforming the hull, Outbacks are recommended to be stored and transported upside-down. With the Hullavator, you can very easily carry the Outback the way it is meant to be and can even leave it in the rack without damage.
    Thule Hullavator mounted to Yakima 58" Round bars with Yakima Lowrider Towers and C2 Claws, in turn mounted onto Kargo Master Congo Cage.
    I hope this helps anyone interested, and please excuse any mistakes, this is my first attempt at filming.
    Thanks for watching!

    Two comments - 1) I can't believe this is your first video! It was well thought out, shot, and edited - great job! 2) Thank you for providing this - I have a Wrangler and am planning to purchase a Hobie, but also couldn't find much info on how the heck I was going to travel anywhere with it -- you provided all the details I need to replicate - this is awesome. Thanks!

    You never showed how you lift the kayak from floor to cradle also the outback is heavier than the recommended weight.I back load mine and use Lock Racks which I find very easy to load and unload thanks for video.

    Hey Eugene, Great video! What model Hullavators are you using are those Hullavator 897 or Pro 898's? I just bought the Pro 898's which are supposed to fit up to a 36" wide kayak but they wouldn't fit my Hobie Outback 2018 version (33" width) unless I did exactly what you did to give the cradles more width.

      Troy DesBiens Thank you, I am glad the video helped. It is the 897 model.

    Hey man, great video demonstrating the Hobie Outback with the Hullavator. Thanks! Do you have any more info on using the Skybox for a fishing rod locker? I am currently planning on doing the same thing. I'm not sure if I should try to install rod mounts inside or some foam in the corners to protect the rod tips. I can't find any info out there on using a Skybox for fishing rods and it would be great to see your setup. Thanks!

      @Trooper347  6 років тому

      Thanks for watching. I did not mount any rod holders into the Skybox to preserve the integrity and waterproofing of the box. I did however purchase a set of Rod Condoms to help protect my rods (they have foam to protect tips), and I place rods in the bottom first before other items. I can highly recommend them, I've never lost an eyelet, don't have tangled lines, and never hooked myself in 2 years of loading/unloading gear. You may have luck mounting holders, I was too afraid to try. Hope this helps!

    Nice video. I'm impressed with how well it helps lift your outback on top of your Wrangler. Really well done demonstration. I've got the pro angler 14 which is heavier and wider. Assuming I can get it on the hullavator in it's down position (which I'm sure is going to be a fun lift), do you think it will lift it on my Wrangler too?

    • @Trooper347
      @Trooper347  5 років тому +1

      Hi, thanks for watching! From what I can gather, the Pro Angler 14 has a width of 38 inches, which would be too wide for the Hullavator (my Outback is at 33). It just will not adjust that far out to fit the kayak on it upside down. It would also be pushing the limits of the weight rating for the Hullavator itself. If i may suggest, there is a better solution for your kayak if you have the Congo Cage already... the Rhino Rack Nautic Kayak Lifter is meant for larger single kayaks or small boats, and would work VERY well on wranglers in my opinion.

    Hi Did you have to buy longer screws for arms to adjust the width?

    • @Trooper347
      @Trooper347  3 місяці тому

      No, for the rack width itself I did not have to use anything other than the hardware that came with it.

    I installed a Congo Cage for the same thing got a 14ft Pro Angler that I trailer and a ocean kayak Big Game Prowler for roof top were parking lot is not setup for trailers with Thule 65" loadbars for ease of loading as well as a Rhino Rack ski/4rod holder on the other side a perfect fit for a 34" kayak

    Just curious are you still using the Hullavator for your Outback, have you had any problems with it?
    It's only rated to lift 75 lbs but the dry weight of the Outback is 81 pounds.
    I'm about to have one installed on my car and I have an Outback as well.

    • @Trooper347
      @Trooper347  7 років тому

      Scott Smith Yes, I still use it regularly. It is showing it's age now, but still functions and lifts the weight of the Outback easily.

    Thank you for making this video it's honestly a life saver. I have a 1992 jeep wrangler yj with a Kongo Cage as well and I am totally going to do this too. I was just wondering where can I find/what are C2 claws?

    • @Trooper347
      @Trooper347  7 років тому

      I am glad the video helped out... Yakima had made an interchangeable claw that could customize LowRider Max towers to fit factory side-rails. Of the three claws they made, the c2 fit the Kingo Cage size tube. Apparently these parts are outdated and discontinued, but a quick search for Yakima C2 Claw can be found a couple of places online like ReRack or Ebay. Good luck with your build!

    Nice video and answered a lot of questions. I have the Rugged Ridge rack for Jeep which is similar to your Kongo Master and your video will make me grab a Thule Hullavator for my Outback. Question tho.... you did not show how you managed to get the Outback on the Hullavator for upside-down transportation with your strapping trick. I also would like to transport using this method. Next time you go out please shoot a quick video on that. Again...thanks for taking the time. Tight Lines!!

      Thank you for watching and commenting, I will add another video of loading the next time I go out. Basically while on the ground I just turn the kayak on it's side with the top facing away from me, and use my upper thighs as the contact point while picking up on the kayak using the straps.
      Thanks again for watching.

    Question due to I was born with CP which effects the right side of my body. I can’t use my hand but I’m able to use my arm. So my question is this: will those handles remain unlocked once you press down on them or do you have to keep your hands on them to raise and lower the kayak?

    • @Trooper347
      @Trooper347  6 років тому

      Each side has a "latch" that must be held down to disengage the mechanism that lock the carrier in the up or down position, so both hands must be used. However, I have read on some forums of people bypassing one side for whatever reason by placing a tennis ball or other object inside the handle/latch to keep it from moving, thus allowing only one side to lock in the up or down position. There is a problem doing this though. When removing the kayak from the carrier, if the latch has not locked properly down and with no weight to keep the tension in the down position, it will fly back to the top of the vehicle from to the travel position quite strongly, possibly damaging the carrier. I personally would not use this method.

    I gotta figure out how to transport 2 outbacks on my Subaru forester. Would a roof rack be wide enough to attach another thule/outback on the other side of your vehicle? The outback is such a wide kayak, just wondering if the space is there. Thx

    • @Trooper347
      @Trooper347  9 років тому

      m klinge On my Jeep the 58 inch wide Yakima bars would allow for a Hullavator on the other side as well, with about an inch to spare between the two racks when in travel position, and if needed a set of 66 inch bars would widen that space.
      While I know my Jeep would be able to handle the weight, I would suggest to find out the rated weight capacity of any factory car/suv roof rack or mounting options that Yakima offers (base plates) before mounting two Hullavators on a vehicle that differs from my own set up to ensure safe road travel. Most factory auto racks I have researched are only rated for 100 lbs or so. Thanks for watching, I hope this helps you in your decision.

    • @Trooper347
      @Trooper347  7 років тому

      Locks are sold separately, and you can buy sets in the amount needed for all items (such as a set of four; 2 for Hullavator, 2 for skybox, all keyed the same)
