    Amazing that Hobie can invent something like 'Mirage Drive' but leave us all out in the cold when to comes to solo launching. Great workaround in this vid...!!

      Thing is Hobart Alter created the mirage drive and he retired a long time ago (he also passed away in 2014). His family / company has just been milking the patents for every cent they can before they expire (Whole reason they put out passport line was to compete with all the clones after the original patent expired). bonafide and Boone Dox make far better solutions then Hobies extremely overpriced scupper carts (also seen plenty of PA hulls fail because of carts cracking the scuppers).

    This is the best solution I've seen. However, now I just leave the wheels on most of the time. Unless you have to pedal a long way to the fishing grounds, just leaving the wheels on is best.

    Just did this for my Compass and just want to point out some things:
    1. The clearance on the sides is very tight. I butane torched a post on the cart to soften it and bent it a little out to give me a little more clearance. Be careful not bend it too much the tolerances are actually quite tight to be able to fit in the scupper hole.
    2. It will be easier if you glue the t-handle so that its oriented 90 degrees to the wheels.
    3. When putting the cart back into scupper hole when its time to go home, sometimes the post will get stuck against the plastic lip inside, simply grab the metal post of the cart itself and pull up.
    Thanks John for sharing, say good bye to cart flipping!

      They would probably sell it for $99 or more. It's also limited to the narrower range of their kayaks. Compass and smaller. The current generation outback and PAs are too wide for this, which I assume is where most of their sales are. Good luck with the build.

    Just a thought, but, couldn't you have cut just the pvc pipe and used the whole coupling instead of cutting the it? I just made mine from your excellent mod directions but didnt cut the coupler, instead opting to cut the pipe and cement them into the coupling. I forgot the foam for flotation, so Ill try the expanding foam i used in the Watersnake trolling motor mod. Thanks for the great mod and also on the excellent instructions on the Watersnake mod! Cant wait to hit the lakes here in E Tenn soon as my boat registration papers are processed. I also used your KMart mod for the battery carry case. You Da Man.

    • @JohnNguyen4

      You definitely could cut the pipe and use the entire coupler. I did that on my 1st version and had no issues. Only reason why I showed this way was because it was just one less connection.

    I got most of it done weirdly I can only do your technique from the left side of the kayak. The right side scupper is off center or something and the cart goes in at an improper angle. Cart goes in fine normally though.

    • @JohnNguyen4
      @JohnNguyen4  6 років тому

      Try it again while you're on the water. The buoyancy of the tires may help in aiming the post to that scupper. Dry testing will only go so far because the weight of the tires changes the straightness of the PVC+post. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

    Will this work on the 2019 or 2020 compass?

      I don't see why it shouldn't fit. The hull design hasn't changed at all.

    Did this work with hobie big tires cart ?

    • @JohnNguyen4
      @JohnNguyen4  5 років тому

      It may not work because the big sand tires are too buoyant and would bend the PVC to a point where you can't align to tubes to the scuppers.

    For all of the "innovation" that Hobie boasts about, they cant do a better job with the damn cart? That is literally the only glaring flaw with it. Great job with this modification. Terrible job by Hobie.
