Did the same adjustment on my new hullavator with out making cuts, and just measured 1 1/2 inches on both sides and sliding it over the hard plastic , super fast and easy, used the same screw except on top of the plastic, used 1 1/2 inch screw, which already came in the box of 4 that i assume was just extras that i never used, now ready to order my Old Town pdl 120 which is 34 wide, with a little sliding back i could easily fit Old Town 106 which is 36 wide, Thanks for your post, now I'm worry free!!😅
Have you done this? I am in the same situation with an Old Town Sportsman 106. Trying to decide what to do but I have the same issue described in this video? Why size screws did you use?
Based on watching how two people couldn't easily lift the kayak on the roof, I recommend checking your gas spring. Your gas spring may be failing escpecially if you bought this used.
I widened mine but didn't need to cut the plastic. I have the 2015 outback which is narrower. It's still a bitch to get on top of the car even with the Hullavator but damn easier than it would be without.
Just want to say, let the hullavator do the work.(with a bit of help from you) Do not pull outwards when lifting up. That’s the main wrong thing I saw from this vid. Lift up like you are going up from a squat(straight up/not outwards) I’ve loaded up my 2018 Hobie AI which is 17ft and 90+lbs with no problem.(old hullavator but I replaced the struts with 100lbs force in each one)
@JR C - Can you please tell me how to identify compatible struts which can be used as 1:1 replacement for the Thule default ones? Then I could easier search some in a online shop. Many thanks in advance 🙏
I run locally with a trailer and I love it because I can transport my OT 132 fully loaded. But for long hauls a "cheap trailer" is just one more thing to navigate and the fine print says most aren't rated for over 60 mph. They're also more likely to fail than a vehicle. It's a pain to load them, but nice to be contained in one unit for travel.

No Need to cut the Hullavator, just use longer screws and place the cradle over the plastic ends.

Isnt the hullivators max width 36” ? I thought the 2019 outback was 34” wide
So technically it should fit without any modifications

I have Thule Hullavator and Hobie Outback. I can easily load my kayak on top of my truck with the help of gas spring.
My cousin has this hullavator on his suv. He has 4 hobies. Carries two on both sides of his suv. This sure will work.
so how has it been so far? still going good? any damage/warpage to the outback or hullavator? or roof racks? how is it at high speeds/long trips?
Very nice. I have a Frontier 10 and the width is 38 inches. I will be doing this.
2 in from top, 1 inch from bottom (handle) side for those need a measurement reference
also, even with the hullavator gas struts helping you, its still hard to lift?
I load on the cradle upside down and strap it in real tight before roof topping. I don't get the wobble you are experiencing.

Yes would also like to know where to get new struts plz
Me three!! I would also wanna know 😅
Yeah me too
Moral of the story, skip the hullivator if you have an outback and spend the money on a cheap trailer.
