Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is an Metroidvania video game developed by Surgent Studios and published by Electronic Arts, under its EA Originals label. The game was released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on 23 April 2024. Upon release, it received positive reviews from critics.
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU follows the story of a young shaman named Zau, who must capture the spirits of three monsters as offerings to Kalunga, the God of Death, who promises to revive his father. Zau is very athletic, being able to double jump, wall jump and dash through air. Zau is equipped with two weapons: the sun mask and the moon mask. The sun mask allows Zau to deal melee damage up close, while the moon mask enables him to damage enemies from afar. Both masks have their own distinct upgrade paths. As players defeat enemies, they will collect "Ulogi", a form of soul energy that can be used to purchase new skills for Zau. Tales of Kenzera is a 2.5D Metroidvania game. Players will gradually gain new skills, enabling them unlock new paths to progress.

Abubakar Salim is so clearly an honest and quality person, I'm happy he could create this game to help process his grief. As I understand, it's a fairly straightforward metroidvania, but just his involvement earns a play at some point. It seems there's a lot to like despite the simplicity.
Which makes it even sadder that Sweet Baby Stink and Denuvo is part of this game!

I beat both. I like each one for different reasons. Prince of Persia is the better, more polished game, although Zau is not a bad game. Zau wins in the story and visuals department.

If you want that with a big budget you have to convince a company it will make them a profit because besides that a lot of triple AAA creatives seem to have no interest in Africa as a setting and I don't count egypt because that's the safe option
There are hardly any African anything. American and European companies refuse to touch the setting, partly because of cancellation worries, and mostly because they don't think it will make money with their majority white and Asian audiences.

You can't really do anything with Africa as a setting even though it would be very interesting. The few times it's been tried people jump in and start calling developers racist or some shit. Japanese devs have often tried to use the setting and create interesting stories, alas, it's been called out racist too for some stupid reason. If you are going to limit the setting to only be tackled by African devs, not only is that truly racist, but you are simply stifling creativity and potential too. Simple as that.

I can assure you that it ain't coming out this year and besides the game looks too good to be true, like the graphics, the gamplay, it all looks too perfect especially from developers not very well known. I'm too excited for that game hence the scepticism.
@Tropax1 yeah watch it have some prescripted combat moves that look flashy but is done by just tapping certain buttons. Also everything we saw could be like finishers or short cutscenes. It really does look too good to be true
Why did you skip on the deeper character conversations?
OMG I thought I had to dodge under the spikes in the first platforming challenge. Doing so generally causes your character to hit the spikes, unless you are pixel perfect. To be clear, I didn't think it was supposed to be really hard, I just thought it was buggy or poorly made haha. I made it through only once after like 30 attempts. I just learned you can just float under them without pressing anything :(

Legend of Vox Machina? First time I've heard about it. The cover art looks interesting. The game in the video looks good, but they might have gone too heavy on all the flash effects.

How intense are the Black Panther / Wakanda influence, to me it's ridiculously apparent, which I think is epic.
Its a very simple and straight forward story. So much that I find it boring. I appicate the effort tho. Theres one game I always compare when it comes to themes of grief and loss and that s a game called Rime. Its absolutely stunning.
This looks fun. Like a less expensive prince of persia
But if you had respectable morals and standards you wouldn't support it. No matter how sad the story behind it.

Seriously...try AURION: LEGACY OF THE KORI-ODAN. It's more like what was advertised with Zau. It also has a lot of RPG elements and a 2D fighting engine style of play like Jade Empire.
I played it through PS+ and I liked it enough to Platinum it (took ~13 hours). I hope the best for the team. For a new studio, they delivered a solid game with a contemplative story.

TBH this game doesn’t look bad graphic and gameplay wise, if it has a truly good writing regardless of the character’s identity (race, gender, sex, etc) AND, they strongly denied SBI involvement or declare they cut ties with SBI, I believe sales will catch up presuming the hype still high. The only thing dooming this game is SBI’s involvement and alleged DEI inclusion.
The irony here is there zero DEI in the game eventhough SBI is in it

Anyway, the problem is they being connected to SBI and the main person of the developer team allegedly connected to organization/s that enforces DEI. It's enough to spark backlash. I'm for judging product by the product itself but even I'll second guess on buying games connected to them right away, lest I bought it and disappointed from political and DEI infusion into the said game.

It looks fun and the story seems pretty good at first glance. But I'll probably wait until it's the next free game on EPIC. As far as the SBI involvement, it looks like that in a game with a setting and direction like this - on the surface - whatever "consulting" they might have done for it isn't really affecting things. It's an original story. It's got creators from a different background. As long as it's not driving some different flavor of the content that has become typical of the stuff that SBI is known for pushing, then eh, whatever.

The game takes inspiration from games like Hollow Knight and Ori. Seems perfectly fine to me, pretty good even, if you like metroidvania, and I don't like woke stuff either.
I like this character more than the one from Price of Persia because he doesn't have the stupid haircut, I'm not a huge fan of neither tribal nor wild west themes, but that's personal preference. I think the problem of this game is that I didn't know it was even coming out, I bet sales will slowly grow, it's cheap too.
I'm not a fan of personal drama/grief right at the beginning, because I don't know the characters yet, and it's not Ori level introduction.

I've been excited about this game since I saw the trailer at the Game Awards. I dunno if anything is ever gonna compare to Hollow Knight for me, but I'm ecstatic to see a new face and game on the scene, even if it ends up being a pretty average experience by the end. We all gotta start somewhere.
