a big factor (along with all the other changes, such as improvements in dental care and sunscreen protecting the skin from aging) is merely our biases on how we view older fashions. As we associate old fashions with being old - think of your dad's refusal to stop wearing that same shirt he's worn since 1972 - we retroactively associate those fashions with being old, even when looking at photos of objectively young people from 1972 wearing that same shirt.
I think the reason we looked older is due to several reasons. The number one reason is we baked in the sun, not feeling the need for sunscreen. We also didn't have the same makeup that is available now. Also, the styles were different.
Young people also matured faster. Most had jobs by 23 and supported themselves because it was possible to do that with or without a degree. They also worked in industries with older adults and had to follow a formal dress code that was usually written by older adults.
@@cowel8734 Yes. The way people looked and dressed was dictated by formal work dress codes which for women meant pantyhose, dresses, jackets and collared shirts when wearing pants and no visible tattoos. Mature hairstyles were also encouraged. Ponytails were considered too casual and unprofessional for the corporate environment in the eighties and early nineties. Today’s corporate environment is much more casual. It’s not uncommon to see people in jeans, boots and a casual t shirt or sweater. Tattoos are extremely common as are face piercings and unconventional hair colors which are generally associated with youth.
