I just wanna thank you for posting your UA-cam video. I hadn't seen makers pipe in 3 years of my research into vanlife. Thank you for introducing it to me, I had given up on my build after 3 years of challenge after challenge and numerous very different builds and layout changes. I saw your video and was like we're back in business! and to design 2 like I envisioned all along. I was so excited I mocked up the bed in a night and had everything shipped by the end of the day. THANKS again for sharing your design, I couldn't spend another weekend on the floor with a 3-inch mattress pad. It helped my 3 part bed design come together and all parts be level.
Wow, thanks so much for the comment! That means a lot to us. We are glad that you found this build helpful! Let us know if we can be of any help throughout your build and of course we’d love to see it when you get it all finished!
@@erikaamac2727 I’m in the same position as you where? i just needed the end of my memory foam mattress supported, about 1/3. so i have 2 pvc fittings duct taped on top of 5 gallon paint buckets, and the paint buckets are odor and ant proof, and can be lined with kitchen trash bags, for trash and food storage. foam mattresses can be cut to allow shortening length while angling up for couch or angled head support. the buckets can be moved outside to free up the space they use.
Practicing tiny life for now with a small room on other side of garage (can't hear anyone else!). I prefer a twin, except for weekly overnight with grandchild who likes to cuddle. So this bed useful for more than van life!
Great video. I must have channeled your design. I am doing something similar so I can use in conjunction with the rear seats of my 1999 Sienna. I am also making a shelving system in the trunk area.
Thin wall pvc seems pretty brittle when I use it. I can't see it lasting. Once the metal is pulled out, to extent the bed, all you're resting on is the thin wall. I guess if it breaks, you could redo in thick wall or pex.
Such a cool design! I am actually incorporating this into a client's van, I spoke with an upholsterer who was worried that the pipes might leave indents in the cushions over time. Have you noticed anything along these lines or do you "feel" the pipes when you sleep, or is this a princess and the pea situation? I have the structure all built, was just second guessing after speaking with the upholsterer. Thank again!
@@MakerPipe Thanks! For anyone else that is interested, we ended up doing a 5mm plywood backed cushion, to reduce weight but alleviate any possible damage to the cushion over time!
I'm definitely going to use this idea. I wonder if it could hold a 400lb man. I'd like to figure out a way to use this idea and have a transition compatible desk/bed situation.
I think it all depends on how long you want the slider to be. If it is over 4 foot I would say add some extra bracing and it should be more than fine. We also have T Connectors for 1" EMT that could go in place of the 3/4" ones in this design. Thanks for the comment!
Looks great! How is it built? The white are PVC pipes, the black metal bars? How did you find some that just snuggly fit? What keeps the black bars from moving or falling out if pulled? (is there a stopper of some kind, how?) Thanks for a great idea!
Hi Sebastian, thanks for the comment and questions. The white PVC pipes are 1" and the black pipes are 3/4" EMT Conduit wrapped in a black shrink wrap that we sell. There is a little bit of a gap between the two pipes but it slides just fine as you can see when Tim pulls the slider out. I don't think there is a stopper for the slider but you could easily make one with some cord or rope. Once you slide it in the slack in the rope will fall down and then tense up and keep it from sliding all the way out when you pull it. Hope this help! Let me know if you have any other questions.
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Will be contacting Maker Pipe but I also noticed there is no reference to Tim’s video name or link to the video. I would like to see his video as well.
I wonder if you could loosen the T connectors at the top of the legs so they could swing 270 degrees - from say 6:00 where they support the bed, to 3:00 where they would fit in between the PVC pipe when the pipe was pushed in... Just swing them back to 6:00 and your ready to sleep.
Brilliant job but does the white pvc not distort sag when your weight goes onto it or is it a very rigid product. What about a sheet of 5mm ply over it ot do you think that would be unnecessary?
I wonder if there is a somewhat standard sized linear bearing that fits 3/4” emt. Maybe a linear bearing on a gland that can attach to schedule 40 or 1” emt would be pretty cool. There are some cool projects that us 6 608 bearings on a truck to make a linear bearing assembly but for something like this, you’d just need it to sort of center the sliding member in the ‘piston’
Hey Matthew that is a cool idea! We will have to do some research and see if we can find any bearings that would fit in the PVC like you described. That would be a nice touch on the design!
This is a brilliant idea! The instructions are scanty, however. If anyone has done this could you share your experience and details? Even experience of doing a mock up would be helpful. Can you think of anything to use for PVC that's in proportion to coffee stirrers for the pipe? Also, I second the suggestion of using a mic. i also recommend close up views! with the camera.
Hi Alexa, thanks for the comment and questions. Do you have a wood bed frame that you're looking to extend from like Tim did or are you looking to make the whole bed frame and extension with pipe? A community member named Randy found some smaller straws that would fit inside of the stirrers. Here is his post from the community. connect.makerpipe.com/post/i-have-been-using-the-maker-pipe-minis-to-help-with-design-ideas-visualizat--6008c46b537b79337375ecd0
The standard metal frame beds at Walmart use rectangular aluminum supports. Much stronger and just as light as PVC. They are equivalent to a Junior I beam only 1-1/2 in x 1/2 in x as long as you want for the bed.
Can you make that as a slide out pad sliding out the back and half of it or all of it coming out the back and landing on some legs so I handicap person can’t get in the bed from there is a light and then it would slide back yet. That’s what I needed and then the rest will be history because I want to be out there with all of you, but I can’t. Until somebody figures out how to make my slide out bed out of the back of the van and then stand on legs so I can go back out and come back out.
We have had customers build a bunk bed using our system in the past. If you want to see some photos, email me at jake@makerpipe.com! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Nice use of materials! It's great that the buckets can be used in a lot of different ways.
Really cool slide out bed! Now I just need an RV to execute this :)
Haha I feel you there! Thanks for watching!
The two hole clamps come in heavy wall and thin wall versions. They are used to mount EMT (thin wall) and Ridgid (heavy wall) conduit to whatever.
Thanks for the info Duane!

I'm thinking that coating the conduit with silicone might make it slide even easier. Beautiful design

Thanks for the comment Stephen. I’m pretty sure the builder just missed that one before the photo 🤙
I was going to add stops in this location and one other on the other side. I just didn’t tighten that one enough after working on it.
@@timbusch1219 would be great if you could make a step by step how to video of the bed build for those of us non builders.
Whats the slide stop
I don't believe the builder put one in, but you could add one to the builds pretty easily.
How much cost for slide out bed ?
Surprised steel is lighter than wood!
The thin wall of conduit really helps keep the weight down!
