So smart to cut the slats and beams at an angle....I wouldn't have thought of that....likewise I've never heard of twofold mattresses so thanks very much for sharing!
love it. I really struggled with how I wanted to build our bed. I had this kind of in mind but didn't really know how to execute. Going to make some modifications to yours. On the sides, I will mount rails attached with unistrut that the frame will bold to. The interior piece ( slide out ) will be on long drawer slides so that it slides a little smoother, yet it will still rest on benches like yours when it comes out. Instead of felt, I will put plexiglass type material or an acrylic plastic on the bench rail, and on the bottom of the bed slide so that it slides smoothly. You did felt, I think the acrylic plastic may slide a little better. We shall see. Thanks for sharing, you guys did an amazing job.
Thanks for the excellent video and bed design. It's the best sliding bed I've seen yet. Do you have any detail about how you attached the sliding slats to the faceplate? Does the faceplate sit "on' the verticle plywood wall when closed? Thanks!
My wife and I just bought a low roof promaster and have been talking about building a “garage” in the back with a pull out bed like yours. We are tall and can’t sleep sideways! You mentioned that if the slats are too wide the mattress sinks in…, you could always have 2 pieces of 1/4” plywood that just lay in place that you could side out to cover the slats and make it a solid surface. We want to use a queen inflatable mattress so it can be stowed away in a tub and our other camping equipment just left in the “garage” in tubs, bungee’d in place! Right now I designed and built a couch/bed that is 3 pieces of 3/4” plywood that shoves back in and folds up like your mattress! But I like your designs! Especially the dining area benches!!! Thanks for the ideas!
HELLO 1ST TIME SEEING UR CHANNEL, EXCELLENT WORK ON THE BED BUILD AND THE VIDEO WORK. IM A TRUCK DRIVER OF 30 YRS AND ONLY NO THAT. WISH I HAD UR SKILLS AND TALENTS.
well done, as a thought, a thin sheet of aluminum, or colourbond metal, 0.5mm under the slats would ensure no sticking or jamming when sliding in or out, a great concept for space saving
I still have to save up a lot of money to be able to get a van of my own and start building, but i've been thinking of things i'd want in mine and this was something i had thought of too! I'm glad i was able to find your video, this saves me a lot of thinking on how to make it work. The matras is genius! Does it fold the way it does automatically? Cos that's just amazing!
Love this type of bed and your implementation, well done 👍 I’m about to start a build and can’t decide, only con for this design I can think of is loosing the ability to fit a bike in the garage 🤔
Awesome build! Thanks so much for sharing, it's really helped inspire my own build. How long were your slat lengths? (sorry if I missed it in the video)
Hi Ben, I really like your video. I think you've perfected the slide-out bed with the back that seems to just pop up into place. I'm curious as to what makes that happen? Also, I used the 4" version of that tri-fold mattress (with full plywood below) on another build and just ordered it for my new build. From what you know, do you think we'll feel the 2" slats thru the 4" vs. 6" thick mattress?
Omg I had to hunt y’all down! After a reshared reshare on IG, digging on your page and finally… the bed! 😍 after 2 years of full timing it my husband and I are building the next one. This…. Might be the answer
This is perfect for what I will be doing, thanks. The only question I have is that in the video when you push the bed into sofa made. The mattress automatically slides up against the doors. With the wood board by the doors to help hold the mattress in place. How does it slide up?
LOVE your design. When the bed is folded up, can you sit there with your back against it like a couch, or does that put too much pressure on the mattress seams? Can it really be used as a couch?
With that style mattress are you able to slide the bed half way out and use it as a chaise sofa to watch movies on a projector screen in the front of the van? I'm picturing 1/3 of the mattress behind you to lean on, and 2/3 out for your legs.
honestly, that's a great idea but I don't think it would work with how it folds. We pretty much do just that, but we just pull it all the out and then use the back doors (with pillows) to lean up on.
@@Ben_Land Just watched again and am realizing with the couch position being 46" front to back, I could sit with my legs straight out just in couch mode. I'm only 57" tall. 🙄😄
Any reason why you couldn't have done the bed lower to floor for an extra seat when not in bed mode? Was it just because you wanted the extra garage space?
Have you found yourself falling into the cracks/seams of the mattress? I was thinking of a similar design but marking the seams at different spots because of this.
Another question please? If the front to back dimension is only 46"+, how can the 2 sections of the mattress that are inside it fit when they are 26" each (78" long divided by 3). Two sections would equal 52" + the last mattress section which goes upright at an angle. All this must exist within that front to back dimension when the bed is retracted. Maybe I'm missing something?
Ragingriver check out the video again or look at these trifold beds online. There’s a few ways to fold them up, but the “shortest” configuration would be two vertical slices (which would equal approximately 12” or 6”x2) plus one horizontal cushion as a seat (which would be ~26”) so minimum of 38” and would easily fit in their layout. ^all of that likely makes little sense but hopefully looking at the pictures online will lol
Thanks for the video. I am building a bed very similar. I like the idea of making it a couch when not extended but what do you do with the mattress when back doors are open? i was looking at doing a double fold rather than trifold so can stay on bed.
Hey just wondering how thick these bed slats are? Currently doing a similar design for our van and trying to decide how thick the wood should be to provide enough structural support!
Why doesn't anyone try a camp cot type bed . pole either side . And some material joining both poles . Bring one pole over when needed. During day time both poles stay down one side .
Are you speaking about the bed being loud? Because that would be no. The van (and all vans) will have some type of creaking and noise while you are on the road.
Nice clarification on the inner workings of your mattress, along with the comments about mistakes and dimensions.
Glad you enjoyed it

Great idea!!
Excellent design and build.
If I ever build another one I will use this bed design.
Definitely a thumbs up 👍
Thank you so much! Yep, we would use the same design if we built another. We still feel like it's the best way to utilize all the space.
Hi Ben,
Never mind. I figured it out with the tri-fold mattress image. Must have been your inspiration. Thanks again!
Fantastic!
As they say in liverpool Thats sound that lad You have done a v good job
Thank you muchly
Excellent Job I like the layout where you have put bed in the rear Thank you so Much I can now Commence with my Build !!!
Thanks so much! Glad to help :)
i've been trying to figure out a solution like this for months... thank you dude! thank you lol.
I got you.

Nice job!
Great idea and explanation. Thanks!

I've been wondering how to build my slide out bed and that's very helpful, thank you.
No problem! Glad it was helpful.
By for the most clever bed and best use of space.
Thanks MK :) We appreciate the love.

That take this design to the next level FOR SURE. I like it.
Great idea to use the vertical space for a sofa and bed. Using the trifold mattress is very smart. You improved this bed system a lot.
Thank you for the compliments. Means a lot.

Thank you! Great question on the slats. I don't think you will feel it. The mattress is pretty firm.
Ragingriver can you feel it with the 4” I’m planning to do something similar this weekend and just ordered a 4” mattress 🤞
Awsome creation!
Thank you! Cheers!
I love this idea!
Thanks, Devin!

YES! love it. Shoot us any questions you may have via our instagram.
If I ever get a van I'm totally copying your bed! And in the meantime I've ordered that mattress fir my car camper, so thanks!
Good call. The mattress is amazing.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. It slides up because it has a back to lean against (the wooden back plate by the doors)
WOW..great idea🎉
Thanks!
LOVE your design. When the bed is folded up, can you sit there with your back against it like a couch, or does that put too much pressure on the mattress seams? Can it really be used as a couch?
You totally can! We did not use it as much as we thought we would though because your feet hang down which feels kinda funny.
Genius! How comfortable is it to sit on when in couch-mode?
6.5/10
great vid
Nice van 🤙
Thank you!
Where did you get your mattress from?
Great job
Thanks so much!

You would lose storage and the backs of the benches would be an awkwardly low height, but other than that, no you could totally do that.
😊
Have you found yourself falling into the cracks/seams of the mattress? I was thinking of a similar design but marking the seams at different spots because of this.
nope. The cracks run horizontal - so you can't fall in.

I'm so sorry, I'm not fully understanding your Q

Is there a latching mechanism for the dreaded sudden stop?
nope. haven't ran into any problems with that yet.
I’m building this bed thx to you 👐 FYI, such a bummer, Amazon reviewers say this mattress has fiberglass in it… Beware!
Hmm.. It's the most comfortable fiberglass I've ever slept on.
Hello from Turkey bro,
We will try to do same design in Our caravan. I hope I can send you my final work too 🙃
Please do!
Thanks for the video. I am building a bed very similar. I like the idea of making it a couch when not extended but what do you do with the mattress when back doors are open? i was looking at doing a double fold rather than trifold so can stay on bed.
Hey Jennifer! When the doors are open the bed stays in place. I built it with a lip so the mattress stays put :)
@@Ben_Landis it supportive enough by itself without a backer?? That’s surprising I figured it would flex a lot
Hey just wondering how thick these bed slats are? Currently doing a similar design for our van and trying to decide how thick the wood should be to provide enough structural support!
They were 3/4 of an inch. I simply took a piece of plywood and cut these slats
@@Ben_Landwait are they hardwood or plywood? In the video you say they were old pieces of hardwood?
How do you support the front of the frame? What hardware did you use?
Just used screws. It's held up just fine so far. It would not hurt to use a few L brackets though.
At what angle(s) did you cut the slats?
I believe it was just a simple 45
how comfortable is the mattress? Can u share which brand you purchased.
Honestly - we LOVE IT. so comfy. Tri Folding Mattress: amzn.to/3vlry65
We LOVE it. So comfy (assuming you like memory foam). amzn.to/3vlry65
How did you do the sides? Is it more 2x4? I’m wanting to do exactly this in my build but I’m struggling to understand
Hey Aisling. Did you watch both of the bed design videos? You get a little better look with my "Benches and Beds" video
Do you have the plans for sale?
not at this point
very nice
Thanks!

Is it loud going down the road?
Are you speaking about the bed being loud? Because that would be no. The van (and all vans) will have some type of creaking and noise while you are on the road.
dang oak... im surprised you didnt tongue and groove it too
nah!
