DIY Slide Out Room - Expedition Truck Build #6

  • Our DIY slide out room needs some adjustments. In this video, I build some brackets with nylon rollers to keep the slide out room frame parallel and square as it extends.
    Incorporating a slide out room into our expedition truck build has taken a lot of thought and consideration. Although this method may not be the most obvious solution. I think the slide out will perform well in the long run.
    Thanks for watching!

    At 6:10 - I would haved suggested a rail with skateboard wheels on each side of the rail. This way you maintain alignment on both axis - perpendicular to the chassis frame and the smooth sliding on wheels. This would be 4 set of wheels for the slide-out's further distance from the chassis and 2 set of 2 wheels for the frame closest to the chassis. The rail would use C- Channel where the open side of the C channel is facing towards the ground. The slide out needs to be insulated on the floor. Which means the slide out bottom would have to accommodate the added materials for the insulation. Saying this, the slide out would be better supported from the bottom not the top. Thumbs up.

    You may say crude. But many parts on new trucks are crude as well. So, it' excellent engineering and the art of building things from scratch in front of us. Looks great. Looks like it works great too.

      This is a good observation. If it works it works.

    Excellent! That is so cool and a very well explained clip. Will be interesting to see how it performs with the added weight.

      Thank you! Yes I'm interested to see how it goes with the extra weight. I may end up adding removable support legs which can be installed once its extended. Thanks for watching

    Excellent - I am envious of your up coming adventure!
    If you have not thought of it already. I would also use some lithium grease. Also make sure your Teflon holding screws are recessed 2 or 3 mil. Round out your lower steel lip where all the weight is going to press the Teflon into the steel so it wont dig in. See if attach the upper portion in such a way you can leave it in a remove the slide portion for service if necessary.
    Yes , this will be very interesting to see with weight on it. My rule of thumb with electric motors, which I to apply to an actuator(never) is to use on that is rated twice or the power needed for the job.
    Wishing you all the best and now watching your progress.
    Cheers

    Can I ask where you found a linear actuator with that much stroke
    If possible can you share a link as I am wanting to convert my pop up camper lifting arms with linear actuators

    Why not use 2 actuators with encoders? That way you will now the position and keep it square?

    I dont get it, how are you going to build anything on a frame that retracts underneath the Floor???

    • @kameshwb4270
      @kameshwb4270 27 днів тому

      May be he will remove the top frame which is blocking the bottom one then also he will loose few inches on either side but I think it’s nothing with all the extra space it creates

    Such a awesome build! WHat will you do if the cylinder breaks and you are on a narrow path in a remote area :)

    • @dancampion
      @dancampion  4 роки тому +4

      Good question! If it breaks while the room is extended I can use a ratchet straps or hand winch to pull it back in, if it breaks while it's in the closed position I can just remove the actuator and get it fixed or replaced

    Curious what the cantilever length is relative to the total length of the frame? Also what are you using as the room's floor?

    • @dancampion
      @dancampion  3 роки тому +2

      Total length is 2.5m, cantiliver length is 1.5m. It will need a support leg
