Built decades ago as a residential paradise for the affluent in Hong Kong, The Sea Ranch now appears to be only a faded version of its glorious past. The secluded and partially abandoned property was thrust back into the spotlight in early May 2024, when a suspected burglar was found seriously hurt on the estate’s private pier. The man later died from his injuries. Residents have also complained about the use of some buildings on the estate as dormitories for labourers brought into the city to work on a nearby megaproject. The Post visited the enclave on the south coast of Lantau Island to investigate.

For a minute I thought there was a story - but there was not 🤦♂️
I have been to Sea Ranch, there’s literally nothing, not even a store or anything, just some old people living there…
My very wealthy surgeon uncle purchased a vacation home at the sea ranch back in the early 80s. I spent many weekends at the sea ranch back in the early 80s with lots of fond memories. I would catch butterflies with a net in the front yard, played pingpong and ran all over the estate carefree. The estate had the biggest salt water pool in Hong Kong with pristine blue water. The club house had a 5 star restaurant with waiters serving dinner in tuxedos. There was also a library, a small gym, a game room, and a cafe in the club house. Families and British Expats would do BBQ and had costume parties at the sea ranch every weekend. It was paradise.
I had a friend who briefly lived at Sea Ranch in the 2000s. Even when their ferry to Central was operating, it was a pain somewhere to get there, I cannot imagine now you have to transfer...
that place is doomed to failure unless they build a road to it. Amazed it has survived this long. How much is the rent on an apartment there?
In Asia countries especially in China and Hong Kong there is very little a consultation around the local resident versus the companies large corporation .
Sea Ranch looks like an awesome place to live
Hello,Canadian here, so here, they wouldn't do anything to inspect or listen, they would just scream at how the state- being canada is being lawful in letting just anyone into the country, with or without a job or education. Oh and also, they're allowed to collect welfare and use drugs cos it's legal here. So i'm gonna be leaving to hong kong to escape this nightmare that is Canada. Not exaggerating, this is our garbage reality.
What was this video about?
Still doesn't seem as bad as big cities in the US.
The most interesting thing about this story is that Sea Ranch exists in what could be a Caribbean-like vacation setting and not the stereotypical image of urbanized Hong Kong; that's it. Otherwise, it sounds like a resident had a connection at SCMP and called in a favor to send this reporter to report on residents having an issue with their home owner's association.
Wasted my time watching nonsense. Reporter's storyline is not coherent. Residents have no right to treat this island as theirs.
Rules and Regulations is not in the Chinese vocabulary
Wow, I remember going there in the 80s for vacation with my family
nothing to report, a old aged residencial with a short term private rental scheme, period...
no one gonna talk bout on how the shorter second boat trip took 20 mins?
Yeah it must be a horror story for the rich having to live amongst the workers. Poor poor rich people.
This 'story' illustrates why I cancelled my scmp paid subscription.
40 people living in a 200 room complex and they are unwilling to share some room that it doesnt even belong to them? Talk about entitle. Also, what a none story despite the semi dramatic music.
They are not unwilling to share with others but they think these people are spreading trash on their island, not behaving appropriately with them which are fairly valid concerns imo. Obviously if other rich people were living the rest 160 flats this wouldn't be happening (atleast that's how they think) since they would be better behaved and somewhat more careful about littering the property
Come to Melbourne Australia……… we have a similar problem…… more severe problems actually…..
Yup, i was there back in 2023 and i saw many homeless people and many homes were unoccupied due to many australians can't afford to service the mortgages repayment. My australian friend also told me that the jobless rate is quite high and during the past couple of years, many people were lay off and many businesses and retail shops went out of business and have to close shop.
Thanks to Comrade Dan.
This project shouldn't be built there in the first place, I believed there are ppl in the government capped water.
🤣
Hello "Hong Kong Chinese" Kumar 🤣
Kumar from Malaysia or Singapore at it again.. Why the need to give Hong Kong bad name? 😂

He's right, those villas should not be there, it's an eyesore.
Why because it is not a expat enclave any more? Because exclusivity for the rich entitled partying everyday elites has to be shared with hardworking labourers?
what is this? Journalism is not.
Flashing the "white english native speaker card" is not enough to be called journalism in hk anymore.
Reminds me of Forest City, another poorly thought out development although on a smaller scale than Forest City
residents were never "consulted" about Chinese labourers....invading China. the irony. My son just inherited an apartment building.....in downtown Beijing. Pay back time.
Does it mean sea ranch will turn into trash ranch.
Hong Kong's Enhanced Supplementary Labour Scheme sounds much better than Labour Importation Scheme from Development Bureau. lol!
This is an unnecessary video. It is a non-story. There is no issue of importance. The reporter is a busy-body.
My Country Hongkong No.1 🇭🇰 🎉
yeah yeah yeah you from Hong Kong I from Hong Kong you still believe in Hong Kong being a country 💀
seems like the residents would welcome the workers, it's better than leaving the units empty
📱 I imagine it's very difficult to be the people that wrote Sun Tzu, as somebody who held Sun Tzu next to Miyamoto Musashi As Instructed in The Book of Five Rings. Naturally one will assume it was a Service Worker as they just enter the area. Anarchy now exists in the digital space and nothing is really as secure as it seems, and this may bring people together. 🇺🇸 ✏️
Who added the Mexico filter?
As a Mainland Chinese I tell people that I'm from Taiwan so they would not hate me 🤗🤗🤗
If someone hates you just for being Chinese then that’s a red flag… you really don’t have to do that
You can't hide that once you start talking
Hello "Fu", "Wu" here. Say hello to your Sinophobic bot farm for me.
@@grace7961 It is not Chinese. It is a bot from a Sinophobic bot farm.
My wife does the same. Of course she is Taiwanese, but still no excuse for people to be rude to her.
Did they think they could escape China on those islands? In Hong Kong, China finds you.
The Chinese 🇨🇳 regime called it the "Hong Kong Great Replacement" theory, by moving the mainland Chinese to where they want to replace.
It's something they did in Tibet, Mongolia, Xinjiang, and now Hong Hong.
It’s the Sinophobic bot farm “Lastetc", "lastetc", "verylastetc", "nextlastetc" bot.
Hong Kong became a financial ruin.
@@Hkchinese888 Hello "Hong Kong Chinese" Kumar. Hope you enjoyed the light shows at Cheung Chau and in the Harbor. Not back for a "financial ruin" 🤣

Wow. Never heard of this place😂
I have been living here since 1991, I have never heard of this place,,,my first glance of this news I thought it was Hawaii 😂😂😂😂😂
South China Morning Post....Alibaba.....
A story to stir up division or bias!
what a non story 😒
A former luxury resort for the elite fallin on hard times....oh the horror...
This video doesn't really say anything. It sort of alludes that the workers are leaving a trash trail but doesn't really clarify what the major issue is. What are you trying to tell us SCMP?
