2023 GWM Tank 300 review: Punchy new turbo-petrol engine expands Jeep Wrangler 4WD rival's appeal

- The 2023 GWM Tank 300 is now entering Australian showrooms. We already tested the new 4WD's 'self-charging' hybrid powertrain earlier this year, but now the time's come to see what its entry-level turbo-petrol engine has to offer.
The Jeep Wrangler rival's 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit has plenty of punch, producing 162kW of power and 380Nm of torque. That said, it doesn't reach the hybrid's 258kW/615Nm highs.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis tests the new petrol-powered Tank 300 on public roads to see if it has what it takes to handle family duties - it's a segment-straddling mid-size SUV, after all.

Well priced! Nice interior, middle of the road fuel consumption, as to be expected. If GWM has good after sales support, this could be a sales champion for them!
In Tibet, China, the tank 300 is very numerous, and it performs very well at high altitudes and in bad road conditions. It has also passed the test of reliability for many years.

The steering has 3 weight levels to choose from and there is quick shortcut menu if you swipe down from the top edge of the screen

i don't get the reference "if you need to overtake. you have to wait for the engine to rev to the point where maximum power comes in"?? you do realized turbo petrol max torque is available as early as 1500rpm right? it's not the same as the naturally aspirated ones that has their max torque at 4500rpm. it does not make sense at all. you might be referencing your review of the tank from a sports car rather than a heavy suv when overtaking. that is not fair to the tank 300.
It could have been a winner but it seems it needs a few issues sorted. Looks good though.

In this price range, the fair comparison should not be with Merc interior and Toyota exterior. It should be with Kia or Hyundai. But then how will we downplay our Chinese vehicles???
He didn’t even talk mention the atrocious payload that this vehicle has. If you use this as a proper family car you will not be insured because you will be illegally overloaded.
Agreed, I went and had a look at them, they look good, tick all the boxes then the payload put me off. You can get into a Paj sport for the same money.

It would have been real helpful if you took that tape measure and measured the boot because 400L doesnt tell anyone anything useful unless they plan to start an aquarium in there.
I liked the comparison of the competitors, you left off one though, the 5 door Jimny which is coming, but still is much smaller than this but may end up just as pricey.
Finally I dont expect the fuel consumption to be great on this or any offroad focused vehicle, even the Jimny gets crap fuel economy when compared to other Suzukis. Judging by this review and others ive watched when run in you should be getting around 9-10km/100km in town and 11-13km/100km on the highway, which for something this big and heavy, im not mad at. If that really means that much to you then buy the hybrid but that is just wasting money, unless you want that pulling power, which for a car like this is another level of insanity.
...seen some reviews on the Jimnys - some have reported as good as 5/ litres per 100 Kms - that's pretty good isn't it ??

Exactly, how dare they copied Bronco before Bronco design was even revealed. GWM must have build a Time Machine to travel to the future and copied ford design from the future. We must demand GWM turn over that Time Machine immediately!
