"OUTDATED!? WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS OUTDATED!? THEY CAN'T JUST DO THAT! AND THEY'RE AREN'T GONNA TELL US UNTIL TRIAL!?"
"...what kind of kangaroo court is this?"
I like how in the (still unreasonable) context of the setting, it's not quite as bad as it seems, since Gumshoe wasn't supposed to have given you the autopsy report in the first place. Now that fact on it's own is kinda bullshit, but the fact that the report you weren't supposed to have isn't up to date at least makes a bit of sense lmao.
@@constantanxietyattacks6878 True, also its in the context that the Defense and Prosecution would have to submit a report for the evidence to be admissible in court and confirm the evidence itself to be acceptable for them, which is why neither defense nor prosecution could ever suddenly claim that a new witness or evidence suddenly appears during the trial unless the witness testimony leads to the new witness or evidence to be brought up.
So how is it possible that Edgeworth didn't know about the phone recording? Same as to why Phoenix didn't know about the "updated" autopsy report.
Also its BS that the Defense could not prepare for any Witness Testimony before the Trial Date as the Defense not only does not know which Witnesses would be called for during the trial nor what their testimony would be about, unless the Defense has also investigated the witnesses beforehand. And even then, the Prosecution can "coach" the witness into testifying and omitting certain facts.
Blew my mind to learn that the extreme anti-defense bias of Phoenix Wright is not completely cartoon/videogame contrivance, but also satire of Japanese courts.
You know they call him Miles Edgeworth because to prepare for every trial he runs 20 mock trials that he never finishes
you could say he's trial edging.
@@pachychon yes that's the joke
Welcome to Ace Attorney, where every single time you whip out the first piece of evidence the prosecutor is like "um no actually that just makes the client look MORE guilty, owned loser" and this repeats at least 3 more times per trial
*Present: Bloodied Murder Weapon with unknown third set of finger prints* "These prints clearly belong to the true killer"
Prosecutor: "And here's where I prove those finger prints, mean without a shadow of a doubt, only your client held that weapon."
Judge: "Damn, your client sounds pretty Guilty, Mr. Wright."
Every. Single. Time.
Your Honor, I submit "Nuh-uh!"
I'd say Edgeworth is notably better at doing that than most of the series' prosecutors.
And then in the second game, every time you whip out evidence, you then get whipped in return.
Defense, fuck you mean “Nuh-uh”?!
One thing I do like is that if you call Detective Gumshoe a fraud, Miles will join you in shitting on him, he doesn't even try to defend him💀
This is the only time this happens in the entire series and yet its so prevalent in the fandom because of how bullshit it is
It's so prevalent it cames up again on the edgeworth games.
The updated autopsy report happens once, but the salary cutting noises continue on...
Wait, you serious? Only once??
@@makroza-9380 It is hilarious how hard it hits the psyche and just _buries_ itself there.
I hate to be this guy but nope it doesn’t happen once in the whole series.
*Salary Cutting Noises*
Whip cracks of the sequel intensify
I'm glad they picked up on how catty Phoenix is in his internal monologue
Witness commits perjury like 30 times in a single court session and her word still carries any kind of weight, legal system in wrightland is so cooked
At this point it's shocking the couple times they do actually bring up perjury in the series, considering how pretty much every witness in the series gets away with it as if it's not even a thing.
There are a good number of times where the need to prove who the real killer is, that's beyond absurd. Like 'the judge is knowingly declaring someone guilty when they're innocent if you run out of life bar at this moment of the case'.
beneath all the fun writing and fandom injokes of the series, there's a nodule of VENOMOUS satire of the Japanese legal system. which, since approximately fifteen seconds after the Americans set up shop post-WW2 was run according to the principle "if you have been brought to court, you will be found guilty, and the job of the defense attorney is to tick the box labeled 'did we at least pretend there was a trial.'" to this day they've got over a 99% conviction rate.
the gag of Phoenix Wright, as originally imagined, was "man. imagine a world where a defense attorney was ever allowed to win."
WE'RE DETECTIVES, OF COURSE WE INVESTIGATE THE SCENE OF THE CRIME
I FUCKING LOVE JAPANIFORNIA!!! I LOVE BEING ABLE TO BRING OUT EVIDENCE LAST MINUTE AND CHANGE THE TRAJECTORY OF PEOPLE'S LIVES WITH MY BULLSHIT!!! 🎊
yeah that's just straight up Japan, unfortunately
prosecutorial discretion over there allows pretty much everything short of railing the defense's spouse in front of them while taking the witness' statement.
@@xalrath Of course. You don't get to a 99% conviction rate without a really wack court system.
Let's all remember. Phoenix Wright is a social commentary on the Japanese legal system.
It just hasn't localised as fluidly as Capcom may have hoped.
I'm glad Woolie has caught onto Wright's subtle characterization as the biggest hater there's ever been. A man so bullied that he latches onto any place to bully others too in spite of himself
phoenix wright is a bastion of love optimism, perseverance, and faith. he is a man others should strive to emulate the spirit of. he is also the pettiest bitch to ever live and all of this combined is why he is one of the best characters ever made.
@@beebs4283 I wish my internal monoluge was half as sassy as Phoenix's
"turns out you're the dead body actually!"
“This autopsy report actually says I’m the judge. I’ve heard enough. Guilty.”
Edgeworth is in a BDSM relationship with Gumshoe's salary.
The safeword is ‘competence’.
Yeah let’s go! It’s the UPDATED AUTOPSY REPORT WOO
DID GUMFUCK NOT TELL YOU?
The world would certainly have been in a different place if attorneys are allowed to combo the witness with lie exposing juggles until they drop.
A second autopsy report has hit the trial
Remember everyone:
If there's a woman in a Ace Attorney game that acts all cutesy at first, there's a 95% chance that she's actually a *stab you in your sleep* type of woman underneath that.
Does Wendy Oldbag count?
@@jaideay3003 she's the 5% for MULTIPLE reasons.
@@jaideay3003 Wendy doesn't count because she doesn't even try to hide her contempt for Phoenix, she's very up front with it the whole time. She's two faced but in a different way.
@@jaideay3003 Wendy makes it clear from moment one that the only reason she has not stabbed you in the face already is that she was not issued a knife
If Edgeworth was in a fighting game, he’d probably fight with the power of “Logic.” Cue chess pieces flying through the air.
>Umineko Energy Intensifies
His ultimate move is him shouting objection and updating his health bar back to half health.
@@Seth1915 That or cutting the opponent's salary.
@@GoldLight73 So removing the opponent's meter while throwing Chess Pieces at them.
Summoned swords vs summoned chess would go hard NGL.
Say the thing Edgeworth!!
Fun facts: Miles, comes from the Latin word for "soldier" and "Edgeworth" is likely intended to reference the sword theme in the character's original Japanese surname. His full name in japanese is Reiji Mitsurugi, Reije is a combination of reiri ("clever") and samurai, while Mitsurugi contains the kanji for "sword" because he is very sharp.
April May jp name is Umeyo Shōchiku (what a mouthful), shōchikubai means "high, middle, and low ranking", is a pun related to another character. The first three kanji of her name means "pine", "bamboo" and "ume". All this is related to seasons and thats why her english name are those 2 months.
Marvin Grossberg, "Grossberg" originates from the German words "groß" (large) and "berg" (mountain) oof. His japanese name is Soranosuke Hoshikage (bite the hambur!) His full name is both astrology-themed and a reference to two Japanese mystery novels. Hoshikage" ,("starlight" or "star shadow") comes from the name of a detective in a Tetsuya Ayukawa novel.
Gatewater Hotel Bellboy (GHB), doesnt have a name! but returns in a different form in a complete different console game, good for him?
"Where's the evidence of your client's innocence?"
And that kids is why you don't let 20-year-olds be prosecutors
But then the judge will be like “nah, nah, let’s hear him out. What evidence IS there that you’re innocent? If you can’t show me something I think we can just end this here.”
just japan things
Woolie's thinking much smarter about the evidence than the game does. Dangerous in this game.
That moment when you're fixating on an obvious discrepancy in the day one trial that the game doesn't want you to bring up until day 3. I hate that.
This is the best fucking Cornered Theme I swear to god man. It gets me so pumped.
It's the only one people know, when I started the second game I was really bummed out
@@wumbojet nahh I don’t think it’s the ONLY one people know but the other games definitely have a different tone but couldn’t compare IMO.
@@zabludokiarts975 I meant the only one people who haven't played the games know
@@wumbojet ahhhhh my bad my bad
Tight race between this and the one from Apollo Justice for me.
Even the worst lawyer in the world would have immediately filed for a mistrial the moment that autopsy bullshit happened.
canon to IRL, unfortunately; welcome to the japanese legal system, the powers of the defense attorney are functionally limited to looking plaintively at the judge and saying "c'mon."
I never get tired of ace attorney lets plays. Such a compelling game.
One of the bigger oversights in Ace Attorney is still that April says all this happened at 9 and Phoenix doesn't show on the scene until 9:08, which is when she decides to place the call. And at no point is it brought up that that's pretty damn suspicious.
That drove me insane the first time I played this game
as far as i remember, they usually dont split hairs over time differentials shorter than about 15 minutes or so, so i dont think its _that_ big of an inconsistency, at least by the standards of the much easier (and admittedly a bit sloppier) first game
@DrStuff142 This is true. The biggest reason I bring it up is caus they also mention Gumshoe arriving on the scene within 3 minutes in this one for whatever reason, meaning if she'd called when it happened, he might have beat Maya there.
April May: *exists*
Phoenix: Only fans detected testimony rejected
Reggie reading for April and doing the *wink* for camera instead of reading it out instead is the definition of commitment to the role lol 33:22
Even if you don’t die instantly, dying in 4 minutes from head trauma doesn’t sound like you would have had motor functions or even consciousness for those few minutes.
Forensic science never makes good drama
Early Phoenix is such a weird character. Like he studied under Mia for a long time, yet never seemed to pick up on any of the techniques she used to win, yet also is able to employ them perfectly as soon as he's told about them.
I chalk it up to the nebulous concept of Phoenix's 'experience' as a lawyer. He's a video game character, he levels up.
I know Edgeworth matures a lot through the course of this game, but man if his first case doesn't make him look like a fraud. I'm glad he only gets better from here on out.
Same. Edgeworth is my favorite character, but I started to respect him completely only after the second game
THE TRUE ATTORNEY SOULS STARTS HERE
Welcome to the world of Ace Attorney, where you can be completely, inarguably proven innocent beyond the shadow of a doubt and still receive a guilty verdict and death sentence because your defense attorney didn't also single-handedly solve the case and capture the real culprit at the same time.
I don't believe there's a single prosecutor in this series that shouldn't be immediately disbarred and arrested, it rules.
Now hold on, Klavier did nothing wrong!!
Woolie, don't wear something distinct if you're going to commit crimes, that makes it very easy to find you!
Wear it afterwards, so you have it when they arrest/try you and you get to look rad for the cameras in court.
A Jury? In this game? HA, good one!
Imagine you are playing the EVO finals and they instal a patch mid match and you can't pause to read it.
"Why is Phoenix such a hater"
I mean... April is OBVIOUSLY manipulative and possibly bad given she's testifying against Maya who doesn't at all fit the description of the actual killer.
"You're not getting the code!" Is my new favourite Reggie joke
4:06 WE'RE COSTCO COPS!
Man that was so outta no where.
I thought Woolie's brain broke from overthinking all the time, but I'm assuming it's a meme.
it's the costco guys meme!
@@kymme123 Of course we investigated the double chocolate chunk murder!
April May would 100% sell her bath water.
"According to this note I paid for on Etsy and had notarized earlier today, the defense is in fact, a doo doo head"
one of my fave videos on UA-cam is one called "when you update the autopsy report" (silly 5 year old meme)... because I guess we can't stop talking about how out of pocket that was for Edgeworth to do lol
Edgeworth: Looks like Phoenix Wright is Phoenix Stupid.
I am really enjoying these! Keep up the good work, this is a lot of fun!
Someone please tell me they clipped Woolie's Uwu
Dude, Reggie's face at 18:44 is so cute.
I ain't gay.
But I ain't picky.
Hope they don't get tired of streaming this game.
They're actually hilarious
lmao it's so stupid though "here's this evidence I found; no I didn't submit it beforehand". It's hilarious
Hard Evidence is my favorite Steven Segal movie.
26:32 FREUDIAN SLIP, REGGIE
Bless whoever in chat, or a guide is on the screen Woolie glances at, or else this LP would take months and months.
Miles Regworth is the Prosecutor we all deserve
Your honor, you have no choice but to find the defendant guilty! For I have double dog dared the defense attorney!
Hope someone tells Woolie that if the music stops when you present evidence, you chose the correct item, and it keeps playing if you messed up. It helps you fast forward through the repeating “mistaken” dialogue.
Holy shazbots were already caught up with the manga. I wonder what the gecko will look like.
I watched the phoenix wright anime, which goes through all of these cases, but im super invested in this lp. Some of this dialogue actually slaps. Im watching til this one wraps up, for sure
So yeah, now begins an entire franchise of legal shenanigans. Don't worry however, Edgeworth gets his later on........
*AHEM*
EXTRATERRITORIAL RIGHTS!
Maybe it could be something in an Ace Attorney-type game to let you have a 'partial success' ending to a case, where it ends with you merely proving a reasonable doubt that your client did it. Make it somewhat less cheery, have a couple lines suggesting that people find them suspicious because no murderer has been found yet, something like that.
A second autopsy report has hit the defense!
i kind of hope they catch on to the oddity in cases going forward where
they have "a trap" because every time its like "if you pursue this line of
questioning, it will turn out bad. Well? Mr. Wright?"
which is really silly even IN universe because it "you COULD have your client found guilty
or you could risk wasting time and still having them guilty."
but the latter is always emphasized as being a bigger risk, like they could be found SUPER Guilty?😆
Watching people lose their absolute shit in Ace Attorney when you start exposing their contradictions is actually the hypest shit ever!
Ah, the first of many,,, many,,,, MANY instances of the prosecution going "erm, aktually 🤓👆"
maaaaaaaaaaan, I know they did this all ready ad this is just the video. But i was sitting there the whole time staring at the answer. Took ages to find it.
It's lovely seeing them go through this without knowing what hits. Yeah, updated autopsy report. Ace Attorney world is such wild nonsense.
Does anyone know where exactly the trope of “victim writing their killer’s name in blood” came from? It seems to be a very specifically Japanese thing, because I’ve literally only ever seen it in anime.
I wonder if they'll add new characters to the stand for the following cases.
19:43 Certified Updated Autopsy Report moment!!!
Salary cutting noises :)
Cromartie High face
Damn. Watched a bit more after my comment.
Klassje looks a little different here. Guess she felt an ostentatious Pink would fit her new identity better.
I'm new to this series, but god this game rules
Hope we get some Harvey birdman in here
Great episode
Woolie that’s a harpsichord, not an organ.
23:14
What the two don't know yet is that this isn't because Phoenix is an incel or anything, he says these things because he is a Girlie!!
This guy looooves to make catty backtalk and sassy side-comments, he even mentions looking forward to gossipping with Maya about new dirty laundry he found out!
He's not an incel, he is just one of the girls!!
Nick is such a hater lol
@@MiloKuroshiro he just can't help himself making sassy comments in his mind to EVERYONE
It's so good, he is such a catty bitch
*spoilers*
the "Nick distrusts women" angle theyre taking is v funny when you take into account what happens in the 3rd game
34:47
I love how Woolie and Reggie read the title and sub-title of the testimony and cross-examination respectively.
It reminds me of how in Slay the Princess they read the "Everything goes dark, and you die" line without even confirming that that's what they wanted to do. These two make every visual novel type game that much more exciting
They even take turns reading dialogue options in games like that!
47:03 there is functionally zero difference these days
33:20
Woolie, is Reggie's Oscar still in the mail?
50:10 Congratulations Woolie, you got the joke. That is the entire reason the Gatewater Hotel is named as such.
20:16 people meme the hell out of edge updating the autospy report but thats not his go two move , so believe a lot people got stuck on that first part for so long. but also that stupid she could easily multi task
April calling Nick a LAWYER in all caps has the same amount of enthusiasm as Zeus calling you a lawyer when you beat him in World Heroes 2 Jet
I know this is a game and all but this court process is messed up and really concerning to me 🫠
It's pretty well known at this point, but a lot of it is because it's based on the Japanese court system, where defendants are considered guilty until proven innocent and there's like a 99% conviction rate. Not quite as bullshit as in these games, but still, a bad situation.
