Personally I think the first step should have been to disconnect the negative battery cable and honestly I think taking them out from underneath is much easier than pulling it up through the top like you do here. Nice detail though.
The 'magical position' for pulling the alternator out after all bolts were removed worked great for me! I wasted about hours time trying to pull the alternator out before I watched your video. Thanks for posting!
before you remove the top bolt on the alternator, mark it's location so you can put it back in the same place, this makes sure you have the same tension on the belt as before.
On my 1995 with power steering, it proved impossible to get the alternator out the bottom, as there are some rigid lines that connect to the rack that are dead in the way. The only way to go out the bottom on this car would have been to take off the header-to-cat exhaust pipe, or take out the left axle. After moving/removing a lot of hoses, wires, and especially brackets (including the upper power steering hose from the pump) I was able to get the alternator out as described here. So thank you for some great hints! Of course, the new alternator turned out to be defective. So I am going to get to do it all over again. But at least now I know how.
I did this last week and my advise from first hand is a combination of this and Eric the Car Guys advise. 1)Remove negative battery terminal 2)Raise front left of car 3)Remove wheel 4)If required remove wheel well splash shield 5)Remove bottom alternator bolt 6)Remove alternator harness connection 7)Remove alternator top bolt 8)Move alternator to loosen belt and remove the belt. 9)Remove alternator from engine and twist to gain access to harness clip/retainer and remove 10)Remove hose on fire wall to give space 11)Remove alternator from top Installation is reverse. 40 min -60 min without rushing. Need a small crow bar to slide the alternator from bracker (still a tight fit/seized) even without the bolt and needed to tension the belt when refitting.
I took it out from underneath. after removing the bracket that holds the alternator. it is held by two 14mm bolts, after that I was able to pull it out. it was still a tight fit but it came out after a little patience.
Thank you, I've been dying trying to remove things and wiggle that little baatard out. I hope the two bracket bolts aren't as much of a nightmare as the bottom alternator bolt though..
Civics can be a real big pain when getting the alternator out the best advice I can give when changing one out is remove the master cylinder off the fire wall (LEAVE THE BRAKE LINES CONNECTED) and move it over to the left of the firewall then you have a good amount of space to get the alternator out no dropping motor mounts and all that silly crap
The easy way to replace on a civic 96 thru 2000 is on bottom and don't have to remove cv axle, here is how, remove wires and upper bolts from alternator, then use your jack to lift your car on passenger side just enough that you can reach button on alternator, use a 14 mm socket and removed bottom bolt, then remove belt, once alternator is free from wires and bolts use same 14 mm socket and remove bottom alternator bracket it has two then move it away and you are ready to take alternator
Dude! I totally appreciate your vids and I understand why, bud dang you're making me motion sick! I don't know if it's possible, but if it is, PLEASE have someone record while you're doing the work! Now I've gotta go throw up before removing my alternator.
thank you, this helped alot, I found to remove the green plug it was easier to totally remove the alternator turning the pulling down, then grabbing the green plug (squeezing the tab) and pull up. the weight of the alternotor popped it right off instead of trying to get pliers and a screwdriver in there.
Thanks buddy inspirational. Great video had fun taking a few bolts, just one to be accurate. Got a professional mechanic to take it out and he complained about the amount of time he spent on it.
Thanks very informative. I just replaced my 98 Civic DX alternator. Here is what I would add since it worked for me: 1. Disconnect battery negative. 2. Bite the bullet and remove the driver side wheel. Use a screw driver/ hammer to punch the lower bolt out. 3. Remove the alternator bracket (2 14mm screws, easy), and wiggle the alternator down. Loosen the mud shield just enough to wiggle it out laterally instead of dropping it all the way down ... the axle gets in the way. Here is what did not work for me: I tried wiggling the alternator out from the top, It is always about 1/8 inch shy. I did not remove the brake cylinder though.
Hi, I have a 1998 Civic LX. Did you have any issues getting the alternator bolts removed? I'm going to apply some PB Blaster to the bolts tonight and let it settle in for a few days. Thanks!
Mines been in since brand new in the 90s and I am having trouble with the lower square pin locked up in it. Been smashing it with a hammer like hell for an hour, I just came here to see how you got that pin out, but... Moving on.
For me it is easier to acces to the alternator fom the front left wheel. I mean if you jack the car and take out the front left wheel, yu'll be able to remove the anti-splash plastic protection and the alternator right front of you
Some maybe will say that need to remove axle but is not, just need to be patiently and maybe in first try your done, is like a puzzle if you know how it will be very easy
I was able to take it out without messing with the master cylinder. I did have to take off every bracket I could see though. This thing is killing me. it better be the alternator after all this!
Worked to get my 95 honda civic XL alternater out...had trouble getting the bottom bracket to let go after the bolt was out...alftermarket alt it seems...
thats my issue now ... 97 accura integra alternator cant come pass this lil motor bracket piece. .. im pissed soni was thinking take off the motor bracket
hey, do you know what size the shim on the top bolt should be? I installed mine but but the band gets stuck because the alternator is off by a couple of centimeters
Great video, ignore the dick heads that have complained. Of course you gotta undo the battery first, any decent mechanic knows the basics and doesn't need to be told.
Oh buddy, you're hearing it 😂 you got it out, I'll give ya that, but wedging a finger? I hurt myself thinking about that. The better move would be putting a soft piece of, idk, cardboard, between the pliers, and don't force, I use hose pliers
I wanted to just see the access points, but I can't watch this mess. The shaky camera is enough to make someone barf. Instead of jerking the camera around showing things like the direction of travel for hoses etc, point with your hands and fingers, or better yet break down and buy a laser pointer.
es la mejor forma de cambiar el alternador por arriba sale milimetricamente como si fuera un juego de tetris yo tengo civic 1996 y cuando el alternador pide mantenimiento lo hago por alli arriba
Half Ass I know it’s too late for you but for future people you loosen the top alternator bolt then slide the alternator towards the engine to remove tension on the belt and remove it
turn front tire to the driver side start with alternator upside down and backwards shove it in and rotate the top to the passenger side you have about a 1/8inch gap to play with but once you find it it's simple about one hour gets it out and it was in in only seven min. good luck and don't watch this video its bad ps it was a 1997 honda civic dx I worked on
Im gonna tell you how to do it while filming on my phone a d terribly tell you where shit is after ive done it, oh and ill also flip back to steps i missed. Dude get a camra man and start showing shit

Belts get a little loose with age so I would disagree with you brother.

Good vid. decided to pull it out rather than drop it, and in my rhd found it easier to remove the battery tray.

Hi, how do you take the bottom 14mm bolt at the bottom. Thanks
Worked to get my 95 honda civic XL alternater out...had trouble getting the bottom bracket to let go after the bolt was out...alftermarket alt it seems...
I have a stock 97 civic DX with 280k. I've replaced the alternator twice now. Both times we pulled it from the bottom. It was not a fun job.
thats my issue now ... 97 accura integra alternator cant come pass this lil motor bracket piece. .. im pissed soni was thinking take off the motor bracket

👍👍👍 Vid.. Helped me to get mine out.. Thanks.
Thank you for this video; it was very helpful. Thumbs up from me.

I cannot for the life of me install the mounting bolt on my new alternator.
Any tips or suggestions??

I laughed too hard at this comment. LoL I couldn't watch either this could trigger a seizure.
Real men don't mind getting electrocuted 😎
What size is the top bolt
You can’t drop alternator out of a 92 civic without removing the sway bar, lower control arm & axle. I HAVE to do it the hard way
over all how old you think it took to do it
Tried this but on my 93 I had to take the fuel rail off to get it out
es la mejor forma de cambiar el alternador por arriba sale milimetricamente como si fuera un juego de tetris yo tengo civic 1996 y cuando el alternador pide mantenimiento lo hago por alli arriba
How much time
The bottom bracket is a bitch, any tips?
Anyone knwo what the green clip is for?!?!?
Title says 92-00, but the intro says 96-00. Make up your mind
One guy does it in 55 min
He does it in less than 9
Nothing left out right ?
How am I supposed to know how to remove the belt this is my first time trying to do this
Half Ass I know it’s too late for you but for future people you loosen the top alternator bolt then slide the alternator towards the engine to remove tension on the belt and remove it
think you need to show it actually being pulled out and being put in ????
great vid lil shaky but i understand rec n doin the job is sorta hard im actuallly changin mines now due i havent n 6 yrs it finalllly gave up lol
