    The Burma Rarity

    Writer: N.B. Stone Jr.
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 21 October 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Everyone seems to think he should marry widow Hawkins - except Ben! When he is asked to assist some land buyers to Virginia City, he must put up with all the talk. Then he finds out that the buyers want to sell a rare gem known as the Burma Rarity to finance the land deal. Now Ben must work quickly to find the buyers who left town with widow Hawkins $25K she paid for the gem. Written by DrDOS on IMDb.com
    Reviews:
"Quite an interesting array of familiar players from the big screen are in this Bonanza story about among other things Beatrice Kay's yen to become the fourth Mrs. Ben Cartwright. That is not something that Lorne Greene wants but he might have to.
In fact other than the Cartwrights and sheriff Ray Teal everyone else in this cast has larceny in their hearts. Banker Charles Watts and 'reform' mayoral candidate James Griffith think they're selling worthless swamp land to two rubes. The 'rubes' Wally Brown and Dave Willock are looking to palm off a worthless piece of glass as a rare emerald. Saloon girl Joan Staley has the latest of con games going, the shell game. Indian Nestor Paiva is not above a little larceny at his souvenir stand.
But Lorne Greene might have to actually marry Beatrice Kay lest she prefer charges against Hoss and Little Joe who committed a robbery with the best of intentions. But she won't do it against stepchildren.
Beatrice Kay who came out of the British music hall tradition in real life as well has a few tricks of her own. She wasn't born yesterday.
Very funny Bonanza story." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"This is another one of the lighter episodes. Ben Cartwright does well in playing the Cartwright Patriarch. He doesn't need any help in solving his problems and can still put every one of his sons in their place with just a look.
In fact, the episode opens with all three boys having fun with their father who finds himself subject of rumor with an rather strange widow. But then when his sons try to "help" him out, they get him into a lot of trouble.
It's fun watching everyone trying to track down the real jewel.
Thankfully, nobody died in this episode." Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

What I really enjoy most about Banaza is the fact that it emulates humanity all the good and bad applicable in anytime period or place. And the morals and values human can or cannot embody to either live in harmony or demise. People like the Cartwrights only exist in TV movies and fairy tales but at least it gives humanity a sense of a better world we all can live in if we were more like the Cartwrights -- their honor humility and openmindedness.

I'm expecting that she just switched them when she sneezed because her circus background allowed her to smell the scam, but she still had to trust that there was one real gem. Let's see... When they talked about the river property, I wondered about flooding but didn't expect 6 feet deep! :D I should have foreseen Hoss picking up the 500 lb weight, but I didn't until he stood beside it. Perfect! :D I don't get the "trying to stop the appraiser" by stealing it. If she didn't know it was fake (or who stole it), she would send the law after them. They wasted an opportunity for a good scene of her explaining how she knew that it was a scam. Well, that quickly turned silly! I like how Ben won the shell game! A "two for one" punch. :D Someone had fun writing and choreographing this one! Ah, they saved her explanation for the end, but by then it was anti-climactic.

The lady doing the game with Chief Crazy Fox wears the same blouse than the widow last episode. Fun fact😂

They had a limited customs, the red blouse worn by the lady has been worn by different actresses in at list ten episodes that I recall. Guys also had two sets of cloths, one for formal parties, one for work.. they must have save a bundle on cost.

Yup, they did that on purpose to save on their budget. Though the guest actors/actresses were paid well.
As viewers we just have to put up with the repeat customs, props, and film clips. (Actually, it's fun to try to remember which episode these things make repeat performances.)
It's nice though to see the Cartwrights in a change of costume.

I watched the episode of the little blind girl that was on a quest to find h grandfather. WHAT PERSISTENCE! I was amazed that she could mend a hole in his shirt! I have GOOD eyesight and l have trouble getting the thread in the needle! I don't know if that's based on truth but it's possible.

In the history of American television no other western ever topped Bonanza. I also feel, that remakes of old movies never live up to the original movies. For this reason when they tried to revive Bonanza with Michael Landon's son, as Little Joe, the show never had a chance.

Hmmm... Reno was founded in 1868. The land outside the dining room window of the Ponderosa house keeps changing. In previous episodes it was semi-desert. Actually, a lot of scenes are in semi-desert land not the Pine tree place. A lot of the dialog uses 20th century colloquialism, words or phrases not used in the 19th century, even less so in the Old West. Also, the men's haircuts are 60ish style, like with Little Joe and Adam; very common for Hollywood. Oh well... This episode was Ok, a little funny, I guess. Joan Staley in the role as a saloon hustler was great. A fascinating character. This could be an episode centering on her. Really fascinating character. Parts of the episode had a comedy silent movie feel. A lot of sight gags, like Hoss going under the horse tie instead of around it. Actress Beatrice Kay looking at the camera, Oliver Hardy style. That was interesting.
